  • Richard I was King of England for just under a decade, from 1189 to 1199, from when he was 31 to 41 years of age.
    Aside from fighting in the Third Crusade to reconquer Jerusalem and spending over a year in prison - not the first sitting King of England to spend time in jail - he’s perhaps best known as one of England’s greatest monarchs.
    So much so that a statue of him riding on his horse with his sword drawn stands outside the Houses of Parliament in London.
    Richard is also credited with introducing the three lions insignia, still used today as the official emblem of the English football team.
    Given that he’s feted as one of England’s greats, it is perhaps a surprise then to learn that during his reign, he spent no more than around six months actually in England.
    The rest of the time he spent either fighting around Jerusalem, or in the other part of his Kingdom … Normandy.

    Remember, Saladin was dragging his feet. Saladin could delay fulfilling obligations of a peace treaty. Richard could not, and Saladin knew this.

      @@HistoryBoxChannel My mistake, you’re absolutely right. Still he was never a candidate for the throne. Partly because he was the third oldest and Richard outlived him and partly because his father, Henry II, openly hated him. It’s funny how Henry II really really liked Young Henry and John but really really disliked Richard and Geoffrey

    This is an overly romanticised reading of the crusades, typical of European historians.
    Richard lost the crusades and returned without Jerusalem!
    Saladin had used knowledge of the terrain and Richard's own political misfortune to force him into a truce. Richard had no choice but to agree. It was either that or be crushed, as the other crusaders had already abandoned him.
    He may have had a lions heart but he was out smarted by a better warrior.

    • @RVered
      @RVered Год назад +4

      Nothing about his heart was lion-like. On the contrary, he was cruel, interiorly unconcerned for England, and a failure. The only reason he is known as "Lionheart" is his admiration by the church. The video says that his mother came up with the sum to pay his ransom, which is a disgusting twisting of History. In reality, ordinary English men and women slaved to raise the sum required. The boy who mortally wounded him was likely tortured and killed by orders of Richard himself, and the entire story about his generosity was probably a fabrication.

    Henry II and Richard the Lionheart are the worst king in Uk, they engaged in crusade wars and killed many muslims and destroyed economy in uk. They were close homosexuals and a way to demonstrate their mainlines was to act macho and engage in aggressive military campaigns. They didn't care about poor brittish people and focused solely on their own personal interests. They created unequal society and wasted money on unnecessary wars, neglecting the welfare of their citizens. They created class inequality by favoring the nobility and neglecting the needs of the commoners. This led to widespread poverty and discontent among the lower classes, exacerbating social divisions and hindering economic progress. Furthermore, their aggressive military campaigns drained the kingdom's resources, further contributing to economic instability and hardship for the average citizen.

    Jesus of Nazareth, The Messiah, died for the remission of sin, including yours, was buried and rose from the dead on the third day, and whoever believes on him has everlasting life in heaven.
