Wemby has nearly 100 more blocks, and 88 steals to Gobert's 52, plus his individual impact is much higher considering Minnesota can beat the defending champs with Reid on Jokic and the Spurs go from near last to top 10 with Wemby. It's the same argument that won Embiid MvP last year. They look at the other guy and say "We can't really give it to him right?"
Last year it was Jokic with MVP, this year it's Wemby with DPOY. He's better as an individual defender by far and finding marginal differences in cherry picked stats is hilarious. Minnesota is fine without Rudy. The Spurs are absolute garbage without Wemby and his individual defensive impact straight up won multiple games for them. First triple double with blocks since Capela in 2021, and only the fourth rookie ever to do it.
Gobert got his, this is his laurels picking up this season's slack for him.

Gobert has the best def rating on his team and in the NBA. 2nd in rebounds, 6th in blocks, first in rim points saved etc... All the advanced stats are for Gobert. And there are people here crying because Wemby deserves more than Gobert. He's the block leader and he has steals, that's it. At least 3 career-highs (including 2 players in his position) on him and his team, 14th in conference, 26th defensively. If he starts to get his team into the top 10 defensively it won't be bad. Gobert is in the playoffs now, stay focused.
Gobert also has high shooting percentage. A good defense is also having good offence.

All the advanced stats led by Gobert are not true individual stats and are very much influenced by the fact that the whole team defends very well. The Wolves played their best defensive game of the playoffs without Gobert on the floor 😂. Look at these stats for Wemby when he's on vs off the floor. Watch also the games and see how much deterrence is created by Wemby's mere presence on the floor. Gobert is the defensive leader of the best defensive team, not the best defensive player. That award should be renamed.

I know that blocks and steals are the sexy defensive plays, but they didn't show a single play without one. Most of Gobert's value does not come from just blocking shots -- it also comes from affecting shots to make opponents miss and deterring them from even attempting a shot in the paint. It would've been nice to see some plays that showed that.

To give Victor Wembanyama DPOY would be stupidity. Here are some facts: DPOY award was nominated 40+ times since 1982-83 NBA season. DPOY never missed play-offs. DPOY had losing record only once (35 - 47) in 1985-86 season. San Antonio Spurs 22 - 60 record was historically second-worst in long 50 team's history. Funny, record was same as last year - meaning Victor Wembanyama's "Best rookie season ever" made no difference. It would be least deserving award in NBA history.

@35lighters91 Maybe… I think part of many of the more important awards is how good the team is, whether we like it or not. With Wemby he is so dang talented that you really can’t deny him the ROY, but DPOY is different. I think Gobert adds a lot in terms of defensive energy and leadership as well as physical defense.
