    Tips for disguising as spy...
    1. Do NOT panic when you get shot at, when you get randomly shot at, and you think its for no reason, act like nothing happened. Enemies cannot see if you took damage as a spy from their attacks, or even what your real health is, they might assume you are real. The only exceptions are a medics crossbow bolt, and a pyros flame.
    2. Walk backwards to the enemy lines instead of walked forwards towards them, its so much less obvious.
    3. Dont just act like the enemy team, act like the CLASS you are disguised as, a sniper on the front lines with an unusual hat with an smg out, not shooting, backtracking towards the enemy lines is obviously a spy.
    4. Dont even think about moving your crosshair onto a player until you have a guarenteed backstab, and stay slightly away from them so they dont turn around suddenly and bump in to you.
    5. Most players dont notice VERY SLIGHTLY bumping into a teamate, especially with how tf2's ground hitbox works with lag, and will sometimes make the player bump into the ground, it doesnt work all the time, but the only players that will notice this wont be gotten by a trickstab unless you are a very good spy, and dont need these tips. If they notice it doesnt matter what you do, you're as good as dead, if they dont, panic trying to kill them or look at them while running away, will get you noticed by other players and killed. Remaining calm as a spy is #1 priority above all else.
    Edit:
Additional notes - what to do if theres a pyro spraying litterally everyone? Swap classes or get good at kunai trickstabs fast.
Really only those two weapon exceptions? No i just felt lazy and didnt wanna write more, just use common sense for weapons that will show youre a spy, like weapons that reward kills such as bazaar bargain.
WhY dO tHeY oNlY sHoOt Me!?!? Your actings bad lol, work on it.
I left out voicelines and specific class acting because it was just that, very specific. Im not gonna write a paragraph on how you should look at the chokepoint as sniper or not hold your medigun and not heal as a disguised medic, if you cant figure that out yourself, you need more than a comment to help your gameplay.

Something else to note if you're specifically using the YER is to be more careful as to who you backstab and when. Always choose targets in places where the enemy team is less likely to see or suspect someone getting backstabbed, or go for one when nobody on the enemy team is looking at your target. Other than that, if you've got a prime opportunity to chainstab half of the enemy team, go for it, as it's no longer about keeping up a disguise at that point, it's just about providing support to YOUR team by wiping out a lot of enemy players so your team can achieve the objective more easily.

I think random crits are . . . let's just say it's not fun to get killed by heavy lasers, keep random crits on all melees (that don't grant crits/mini-crits) on some secondaries, and on no primaries (and maybe change the crit multiplier for scout that faster swing speed means more crit chances faster)
I feel you shouldn't kill friendlies, but if they're directly hindering the "game state" tell them to use a meme loadout
if you charge a body shot to take care of someone that you understanding you aren't going to hit the shot and you took the skillful decision of dropping the medic with a clean 150 body shot, that arguably took more skill then hitting a headshot
and the Phlog . . . well it's the best worst weapon, the ability to get free fire damage from the scorch shot (the actual problem) combined with some maps being really choke heavy carries that weapon. If it's an open map, it's mediocre, if it's a tight map, it's a bit annoying if not slightly busted
and uh, flame thrower crits in general are just annoying kritzkrieg, random, or earned through weapon perks, continuous fire crits are annoying, but at least heavy lasers have short breaks between each shot along with bullet spread, but flame thrower crits . . . oh boy, no gap of time, honestly can't even call it triple damage with how much damage it feels like it does in one second, flame thrower crits could chew through a heavy as if it were nothing.

How to make your disguises more effective, in addition to walking backwards, acting more like the specific class you're disguised as, holding out an appropriate weapon (such as a melee to pretend you're out of ammo which would help explain why you're retreating), not panicking when shot/damaged, etc. is to use *voicelines.* Plenty o' times I've seen players who didn't seem fooled or convinced until I hit a few key voicelines to sell my disguise. For example, a medic running backwards toward their team with a bonesaw out would seem like a retreating medic sure, but what really sells it is using the "incoming!" voiceline or "help!" to show you're distressed. Or you're disguised as a sniper behind the frontline? Hold out your melee and use "spy 'round here!" so they think you're not sniping because you're spychecking. You'd be surprised how much more effective your disguises are just with this one little detail.

Its not so much that "diguising doesn't work anymore". Its more so that, in most cases, players are either :
    A) Paranoid as fuck, and will shoot anyone they find remotely suspicious (Sometimes its warranted, sometimes its clearly just random spychecking because they are just that paranoid).
    B) Experienced enough to notice the spy. The more experience a player has, the less likely they are to pass incognito. Spy mains are especially good at spychecking, and the whole experience thing? That's why Spy isn't really worth it in comp (Where he mostly does a job that isn't about backstabbing people, since communication kills spies. Its more about intel, and getting a rare pick, which Sniper can do just as well).
Then there's the more rare moments which fall in two categories :
    C) Player is clueless, and so cannot distinguish a spy from a teammate. Usually that's the first time players, who will fairly quickly fall into category A out of simply being tired of getting stabbed.
    D) Player is focused on something else, and a course of event made the spy walking by actually believable. In my experience, I have found that the spies that do fool me on disguises are cases where the actual player passed by that area recently, and did not die. Thus I would expect the very same player to come back, so long as the spy isn't being extremely obvious. Other example is, enemy team actually attacking the spy, and the spy having a believable enough reaction to it, which again really depends if the enemy is focused on the enemy threat, or looking at the spy. Good example of this is the clip at 0:17, if the teammate soldier hadn't been here to shoot at you? Most likely result in instant death.
Another example from my experience playing as a spy, for some players, seeing a spy backstab another player with the Eternal Reward is seemless. It clearly isn't to anyone who is paying attention. Lot of players also do not listen for a spy's backstab, or do not pay attention to the kill icons.
Also needs to be reminded that, for every time the disguise worked, there are countless times no amount of acting could save you. Hence why disguises are mostly just here to make it slightly less obvious that you're a spy in a crowd of players, and not getting targetted by sentries, more than actually fooling most players who fall in both categories A and B. Besides, Spy is only effective if the enemy team is actually disorganised (Lack of teamwork and communication is where Spy thrives), and concentrated on something else. You'll have many more kills when both teams are fighting each other, than just trying to go for a stab near the enemy's spawn, just like uncloaking near players is easier in the middle of a firefight than on an empty server. And most players will also die in the process of getting a kill anyway.

    • @ChizuruMinamoto
      @ChizuruMinamoto 2 года назад +7

@@jamnchips I try to do that as well. Results are varying, and you run the off chance that the spy will just take crossfire, but I've seen it work out sometimes, when the spy isn't tripping on himself.
But I still think relying solely on your disguise is a bad life plan. I find it much better to go around in a loop with the stock watch, uncloak behind enemy lines, get a couple stabs, then cloak away and loop around back to your team, or away depending on the area. So I tend to just favor a disguise that, while kinda obvious, just makes it easier to go around, I usually go with Scout, because its smaller (not every snipers know the head of the spy isn't at the scout disguise's head, but right above that), its slightly less obvious behind a wall, and you keep the 107hu speed.
I do use other disguises when applicable, but if I'm just going in for a quick uncloak, stab and leave? Speed is better than being inconspicious usually, given the lack of communication.
Its quite interesting how many people fall for the "I'm cloaking while walking left!" *changes direction to right*. Even in small areas, such as the front of the 3rd area's BLU spawn on pl_hoodoo, people still fall for that. The area is small enough that you shouldn't even be allowed to escape like this.

I would like to point out that Spy's role is not necessarily to go on huge killing sprees so much as to harrass the enemy and cause the paranoia that causes everyone to spy check. A big part of the purpose of spy is to sow chaos in the back line, so running in, getting a crucial pick, and dying is sometimes the correct play for destabilizing the enemy.
Other times if you can survive long enough, you don't even have to get that many kills. Just stabbing one person and escaping, with the enemy team knowing you're still there bc you keep appearing and making a nuisance of yourself, can distract and disorganize them enough to win the match just because team fights happen while some enemies are chasing you far away from the action.

Remember: Spy is a "support" class.
And like support classes, they're usually orbiting around the map, performing their functions, while the rest are going at each other.
Medic's the closest to the allied team, heals and buffs as much as he can.
Sniper is the farthest from the enemy team, headshots priority targets in long range.
Spy is the closest to the enemy team without being actively in combat, messing with them as long as they're occupied by the rest of his team.
Many think of Spy as this unstoppable killing machine, rather than him being this wasp or glass cannon that strikes at certain times and I mean not all the time.

1:15 I love this clip with the two medics, just from their reaction you can tell how much experience they have.
The first medic (Eddie) Immediately calls out your bluff, because you were disguising as a Pyro that just came outta nowhere and isn't spy-checking or pushing. They instantly see this behavior as abnormal and begin attacking you.
Whilst the second medic (Andrew) is blissfully unaware of this as they're probably less experienced as a medic, and begin healing you, not realizing that you are a spy. It's not until they Über you that they slowly begin to realize that this whole time you've been a spy, you can even see the exact moment they notice this, when they confusedly stare at you in a way that shows how they have no clue what is going on, at that exact point they realize that you were a spy and they just wasted their Über.

  • @ceddavis7441
    @ceddavis7441 2 года назад +5

While playing spy I've noticed, your disguise kit only works on distracted and oblivious enemies.
Being disguised will allow you to evade passing glances, as most don't look twice at team colors.
Medics are actually one of your worst nightmares, because of the usual play style of stand behind and be vigilant, they are actually the most likely to notice you, and since they are faster, have devastating melee attacks and either a nice one shot or an ok spray and pray, a competent medic will kill you 9 times out of 10.
Pyros of course also being one of your worst nightmares, with two words, aoe dot. Always be aware of corners and fire happy pyros
Invis is usually your best bet, be unpredictable, as soon as you do something twice in a row, it won't work again
Your revolver is stupid good, many will try and say "ambassador" but I would actually suggest stock until you learn how to aim. A full 6 clip revolver can kill all classes except heavy, and with near instant reload, it's nothing to scoff at. I've been more effective with a pistol than a knife, so don't be afraid of gun spying.
Your not smart, your not clever, someone has done that trick before, and someone will be prepared for it. Know your enemy and remember, each trick has a shelf life.

Just because you got the kill doesn’t mean the disguise was very effective. A lot of the time players rely on the other team never seeing you as you creep up from behind, but that’s not your disguise doing the work, it’s their unawareness. When the disguise does work it’s usually only for a moment because they were too distracted with a more pressing issue, not because they were actually fooled. At least, thar’s how I feel.

"Disguises don't work" is not the right way to say it
They do work but they are unreliable because
    1. Most experienced players are used to most of the spies tricks
    2. After getting backstabbed they become paranoid and will attack anyone even remotely suspicious
    3. The Disguise kit has issues clipping with animations like the unusual you're wearing, or your weapon you got is not a shot gun.
Someone else in the comments explained it better than me go check it out.

One thing that makes it work is, if you remember to focus your attention on areas that make sense for the disguise to focus on. I find that looking at the area where my team is, rather than looking at the enemy team, tends to get people to ignore you, since that adds up, if you're a demo you would take a corner wide while looking at that spot. If you're trying to look at the enemy at the same time, even a little, they might see right through it. Ask your self, "What reason would my disguise have to do this thing?" and if it's not an obvious enough of a reason, then maybe avoid doing that. You can get away with it if you turn around when you're at the front, since they might think "Oh he's making sure we're with him, so he doesn't push in alone." but just doing it when it doesn't make sense and/or for too long and it can get the enemy team to go "Why would he do that?" which can end in you getting spy checked. Sure, this does come with the problem of running into enemy players you can't see because you can't look at them, since that can ruin the disguise, but it could also save your life and get you kills you other wise wouldn't have gotten.

Just employing a few simple tricks (like the ones in the top comment of this video) can make you so much less obvious. It's all about picking your disguises, staying calm, acting like you're actually the person you're disguised as and most importantly knowing your limits and when to pull out.
