Great to see footage of this. I remember as a very young kid seeing "Partick Thistle 4 Celtic 0" coming up on the old scores teleprinter just before half time on Grandstand and shouting to my brother the teleprinter's gone wonky! My brother said 'aye it must be knackered'. Then a report came on a few minutes later, and it was true!!
As a point of note the coverage here although may be originating with STV was actually broadcast in Monochrome. Although it has been many years since I have seen that monochrome coverage, I think it would be a safe bet to say Montford's commentary was not the original version as the commentary follows the cuts that was very difficult to achieve in 1971. Check it out for yourself when comparing this say to MoTD or The Big Match coverage from the same era. Not saying I am 100% right but with nearly 30 years of broadcasting experience under my belt and an in-depth knowledge of archive television., I would take a pretty good bet this was the case. But way to go Partick Thistle. Surely one of the best Scottish League Cup finals ever.
I'm a current Rangers fan,as a kid (born in 1970) I was an Aberdeen fan...nice to see Thistle win a trophy 🏆. Would be great to see the Jaggies back in the SPL.
The Thistle were outstanding that day, got in their faces, put up a magnificent show, i was so pleased for my Jags mates, me being a bluenose, but it was a sensational final, and a huge shock, but Thistle blew them away
I was there ..at 0- 1 we thought aye give them a goal before we score 5..at 0-2 we thought ,well this will wake us up,at 0-3 we thought..wait a minute..and at 4 we thought…oh heck,or words to that effect, well done the jags..my mate was at Ibrox and when the score was announced at half time he thought it was a wind up.
The Jags deserved their victory on the day , but I still believe that Billy McNeill's absence was a major factor in Celtic's poor performance on the day . They were too relaxed and underestimated Thistle . Big Jock was furious with his players after the match and decided that it was time to ring the changes .
yes, and a miscalculation. Surely with Johnstone going off they were down to thirteen - 10 players, the Referee and two linesmen? Yet still lost heavily
Tavy@ celtic didnt play that bad. It was thistle that played great in every bit of the park wich teams need to do when there playing at hampden and it doesnt matter who against becouse if the other team reached the final then it wasnt on luck they got there. When i was aged about 7 to 11 i always thought hampden had bigger goals than any other ground and a huge much bigger park. I would thinck no wonder players are scoring so easy and from 25 yards out becouse there goals are bigger, there huge lol but with those big huge semi arched stantions holiding the back posts and crossbar up made hampden look like the place to be, then when they took those goals down for good it just wasnt hampden anymore to me. It made a difference, and rod stewart bought those famous goals. Theres no way rod would let them go to waste lol but thistle played great that day. A thought celtic looked a bit complacent tbh.
I seen celts lose 4 league cups in a row in the early 70s to rangers thistle hibs and dundee big tommy gemmill was captain for dundee in the 73 74 game it was lashing down kicked off at 1 30 on the sat it during the power cuts and 3 day week only about 26 000 were at the game dundee and big Tommy's day
Partick Thistle had more hunger and energy than Celtic and were worthy winners. I think Celtic were a shambles especially for the 3rd and 4 goals Thistle scored. Celtic should have been given a penalty for the foul on Hay but the game was already over as a contest by then.
I think celts battered thistle in the league after this game ronnie Glavin did a shocking tackle on jinky and he had to go off glavin shud have been sent off
I’m a Celtic fan but enjoyed watching and seeing the players reunion 👍
As a young boy I was at Ibrox that day and no-one believed the half time score when it came over the tannoy.
Marvelous stuff. Was there with my late dad 50 years ago. I had just turned 12. Got Partick team autographs too! Thanks for posting.
I think the whole of Scotland was shocked that day 14,1,to thistle ,sorry 4,1,to thistle one of the biggest shocks in life ❤❤
Even Celtic/Rangers dominated pishy Scottish football is fairer to the ‘smaller teams’ then that corrupt farce they call the World Cup.
Thistle were outstanding that day, they met shortly after that again I seem to remember and Celtic won 5-1 at Firhill! :D

@David Broadley I wasn't born lol.
World of sport, half time read out the score, we'll need to check that, happy days lol.

A classic line in football commentary; "Celtic are down to twelve men".

Arthur was a legend 😀
Classic Arthur.
Well they are usually playing against 14.
Glavin looked immense in this footage . Probably why he got his move to celtic . And this is probably when Stein realised Gemmell was past his best
"Celtic down to 12 men"
Fine Freudian slip there from oor Arthur.😂😂
Almost exactly 50 years ago
@4:09 Ronnie Glavin joined Thistle in 1968 then got in a DeLorean and left in 1964. F.Coulston joined in 1967 and still playing for them in 2001 !
Unbelievable
Can you imagine the half-time team talk by Big Jock?
Jock said “och well done wee laddies, I’ve just wee betting Celtic lost 0-4 before wee half time”
Wee? Are you incontinent?
One Team in Glasgow
One Tic' in Glasgow .

Alan Hansen's big bro taking one in the face for the team there.

Mr Mountford. Missed. Our Mr Wolstenholme.
It looks like 1931 instead of Glam 70s.
5:08 - Did he just say 'Celtic down to 12 men'?
Aye, I'm howling 😂
The ref was quite lenient 😂
Dans quelle ville est cette equipe ?
J sais seulement que c'etait l'equipe d'allan rough.
Glasgow
Paris has PSG and St.Etienne...think of Celtic and Rangers as PSG,Partick Thistle as St.Etienne.
5:05 "Celtic down to 12 men" For once, did not include the ref. 🙂
Knew Bobby Lawrie’s grandkids, he lived in Kilwinning, still does I think?
