At the one con I went to there was a group of little girls and parents that were there for a dance competition. They were wearing bright neon tutus and they were getting glitter everywhere, yet they were looking at us like we were weird and didn't belong there.

I have one and it happened at Anime Crossroads. Before they moved the con to hotel on the west side of Indianapolis.
This one Christian extreme group was making fun out cosplayers calling the girls sluts, whores, and saying we were all going to burn in hell. We did our best to ignore them til finally, one of my friends snapped and said that she was a Christian and what they were doing was complete bullshit. One dude threw a tomato at her and well...Lets just say the police were called.

I've been to Anime Milwaukee since the beginning and I will say, every year we been the same weekend at the gymnastics group, I've either heard rude comments or been told by friends they heard rude comments from them. It sucks but I don't see it going away any time soon. The worst thing I think I heard about was like 2-3 years ago at AMKE, where a security guard from the convention center freaked out on Hetalia cosplayers (yeah I know, I know, but these ones did not have anything offensive and were not doing anything offensive). The guard kicked them out of the con's photoshoot area and pestered them as long as he could, claiming he was a World War II history expert and they were offensive just by being there. What makes this even weirder to me is I have a friend who does historical enactments and at those conventions there have been people much more offensive uniforms.

AnimeGeek87 Wait, you said "I know"... What's wrong with Hetalia cosplayers in USA? Did France cosplayers went naked and pulled down people's pants? Or did Germany cosplayers tugged on people's hair? Or did Romano cosplayers were just being plain rude at people? Or what exactly gave them a bad rep there?

My friends and I were going to eat at Burger King before we went in Ohayocon, there were 4 of us in total and I was cosplaying Teto Kasane from Utalaloid and my other friend was cosplaying Kurapika from HunterxHunter. So we were the only ones ready before we went to the Con, anyway right when we walked in we all heard this lady scream at her child and say "You will never go out of the house dressed like that"! All of us were shocked, but she honestly was just a rude lady, that didn't understand what we were doing. Still it was rude for her to say that.

yes very well put about how anime is just another form of media and how these rude people are just xenophobes who are afraid of other cultures. you should get that quote printed on a shirt and then just wear it to conventions and if there's anyone rude just rip open your jacket and let them stand there and read it. also, move to toronto. all the experiences I've had while cosplaying were good ones. whether they were interested in anime, inquiring about the convention, or admiring our costumes, most people here are really nice. So many strangers, who weren't part of the convention or event, have asked for pictures of me and with them and honestly that's always the highlight of my day. and yes, please do tell the story of how you were backstage at the rave. :)

I just remember wanting to hit them, like go to bed Susie geez.... although on a more positive note, I met a very friendly but confused guy in the mall during then who politely asked me about the con and anime and such and told me about his nerdy roomate and generally, I've noticed that much older people, workers, or children are the problem. maybe try explaining to people like the check in clerk next time that its not crap and such.

As it turns out, they were complete strangers, but since i'm an awkward nerd i stuck with them for the rest of the rave. The next day i saw one of the persons and we were like best buds talking about the rave and stuff. Dancing like that when you know no one has been the most ballsy thing i have done to date.

At one 'con I attended, I went across the street to a supermarket called Wegmans to get some lunch. The restaurants in the hotel were jam packed.
Please note that I was not in any kind of cosplay, or carrying any cosplay accessories (hat, ears, etc). I was just in a plain t-shirt, shorts, and sneakers.
I get in line to get some pizza, and the lady behind the counter looks at me and says: "What is this? Spring Break for nerds?!"

Also, on Saturday at Naka-Kon, I got into a huge fight with my friend who was going with me because she kept talking over me, for me and I was sick of it because she always does this and I was being so kind to miss panels that I really wanted to go to like Japanese Manners and Mannerisms 2.0, Constuck and a Q&A panel they had for Patrick that day so we could eat at the same time and have free time. I missed Anime Price is Right Cattle Call and the gameshow pannel, the Pokemon Quiz Gameshow which I was going to try and participate in. I even missed most of Matsuri to eat and didn't even go back to it because she wanted to take the time to eat. So, while I was at the Cosplay Runway she came to get the room key to get her stuff then accusses me of stealing her money, then saying it's suspicious I all of a sudden loose all my money besides 8 dollars which I then used to buy McDonnalds. I can honestly answer where majority of my money went. I bought us drinks, I bought us food since I paid my mom back the money she used for McDonnald's Friday, I bought us candy, I used the mini-shrine during the Ball, and bought her something from the Dealer's Room since I was trying to make sure she was having a good time at her first anime con.
She says she did so much for me, yes she got granola bars, but I got the hotel room which cost a bit over a hundred dollars by the way. She then says I never really do much for her but I've been buying 7-11 for us for over a month, spending so much on her, and she throws a fit and leaves the con because I got upset with her, because I actually for once, opened my mouth to tell her what's what. But after I got back from McDonnald's I pretty much cried in a corner outside in the lawn having a few people come over to ask if there was something was and if they could help, one person almost called staff. But I guess I'm happy she left the con because a few hours later when I was giving out free hugs I met my new friend Nick cx

I also think that if you get offended by how much the anime community is made fun of you probably shouldn't be in the anime community because being mocked is one of the draw backs you just have to deal with,
But i do believe that in the future anime will be more mainstream, I remember when I used to be teased for playing video games and now it's completely normal.

Although this wasn't at a convention, after awhile it was a bother. The students at my high school always make fun of the kids that love anime, including me. Our school has an anime club and it's alot of fun! ^^ But alot of the people that aren't into anime just love to judge. I've had one guy come up and find out I like anime and be like," Ohh you're into that weird shit " . And started saying how people that like anime are weird and apparently how if you like anime you're into nude cartoon shit. Like first of all he had no right bashing at me and telling me why it sucks. Second, he obviously doesn't know what anime is! it's a source of entertainment and contains so much more than what he's thinking it is. That's why some people I just cannot get along with at my school. They take us anime lovers as a bunch of weirdos or a waste of time. I've been judged just because I have pictures of my favorite anime characters in my binder (mlp pics too). And then if I like pictures of people that do cosplays, people suddenly think I'm some pervert or judge what I am. It just makes no sense to me. I mean I have loved anime since elementary school so by the time I got to high school I didn't really care. Just sickens me overall though how people are being judged by what they love or their interest. if you have nothing nice to say to the person about their interests, then don't say anything at all. I know friends that don't like anime, but they still have the courtesy to keep it to themselves and not judge. Some people at my school though think they're better. it's just something really sad is what it is

I've heard of many situations like these happening from others on convention forums/fb groups, but the 'normies' that I've run into were legitimately curious and have been supportive for the most part, even asked for pictures with me and my friends and have a friendly interactions. I guess I haven't been unlucky enough to have judging/rude people yet. I have at least seen the 'judgy glares' from normies here and there but it's been very sparse and mostly accepting, so I think it's just different for everyone.

AMKE 2014 was the first year of the convention where it was pheasant fest instead of the gymnastics team. I've been going to it for now 5 years (that first year was when it was still at the UWM campus) so I was personally used to the rude looks from the parents. Actually my friends and I were looking forward to count how many kids in tournaments wanted to come see our anime con and were surprised that some parents actually let there kids take pictures.
Though that isn't saying that I didn't have a few experiences this year just because I was "used" to it. I was dressed up as Kaneki from tokyo ghoul (made my own mask and everything) and I remember a parent grabbing there kid roughly to the point that the kid said ow and hurried them away. Now i'm harmless but even if I looked weird it doesn't mean you can hurt your kid to rush them.
The other story I have was on a friday afternoon. I had college classes so I couldn't get there till 3 which was fine because my hotel room would open up then. This has a little to do with the con staff but I mean it was the first day. So I was heading downstairs from the 11th floor from my room and I was on the elevator. The elevator staff was yelling the whole time which I know there is a new elevator system so people weren't really following the rules but he was screaming about going down on every floor. You don't have to yell all he had to do was talk nicely. The real problem though had to deal with two people in the elevator with about 5 congoers. They had bags and they were heading down to lobby to check out. The older guy did not look happy about the convention being there. So it gets down to the second floor (I was heading down to the first floor as well to pick up someone) and the staff member kicks everyone out of the elevator (which I didn't mind because it's one escalator) but the "normies" who were going to be kicked out were furious yelling "we aren't even for this dumb fucking convention. We are going to check out" The staff member, instead of apologizing for not realizing there obvious bags just shrugged and said "Well this is what I was told to say from my bosses. You can not go down from this floor sir"
The older guy got really angry and refused to get off which makes sense because they were not part of the convention. I don't know what happened afterwards but thats my story.

When I was at Acen one year, I went to the coffee shop in the Hyatt dressed in full cosplay. I waited patiently in line, and offered to buy my friend a drink. She was stuck deciding, so I cut ahead of her. The employee gave me this condescending look, and said I was cutting. At that point I was like “ummm, no we’re friends and I am BUYING HER DRINK.” I don’t get people that are so judgmental.

Okay so there was this one con I went to maybe slightly less than a month back and it was held at a mall like it always is. My con squad and I were in the basement just camping out, chilling and playing games like we usually do at cons. So we were playing truth or dare (not even that loudly, mind you) and this guy in his late 40s to mid 50s literally glares at all of us and he whips his phone out and tries to sneak a pic while pretending to text but he screws up because the flash was on. I don't think he realised that some of us understood what he said because he started saying stuff like "Stupid children and their weird hobbies" in Chinese (mind you, most of us are in our mid-late teens or are already in their 20s so it was kind of funny/awkward) as he was taking the pic. It was honestly really rude uncalled for tbh, we were just trying to have fun and we weren't being loud.

I've only recently started going to fan run cons again after switching over to a particular circuit of signing style American TV cons, and our show features very few costumes that would look too weird to an outsider, so I've rarely gotten more notice of it from hotel staff than asking politely out of potentially, but not necessarily, passive aggressive curiosity. I did get a rant from a normie in the hotel for having the AUDACITY to PAY for photos and panels with some of the top celebrities in the genre, though. 300$ per person for the CFL football game he'd flown in to see? totally normal. 300$ for a full weekend of events including rave/concert/3 days of stage talks? unreasonable, apparently.

During the time Izumicon 2017 was happening there was some sports thing going on at the convention during the last day, the people who were there for the sports event made rude remarks obviosly not caring too much about how they were being rude, dirty looks and such. On the second day there was some volleyball group at the convention center and I was changing my costume to Grell and ya I can't really blame the volleyball people for wondering wtf since they had no idea why the people at the con were in costume and also they were teenagers and they weren't actually rude about it...................but the people from the sports thing were really rude..........why do these things be scheduled at the same time it's really annoying

One time i was in this Anime Convention (I wasnt cosplaying im to young to cosplay and go with only my frinds, plus i dont even think my friends cosplay, considering i havent cosplayed before) and i was wearing my naruto shirt and my pain back pack (as in pain i mean the guy with the mysterious demon transforming thing on his back) and this girl a non-cosplayer was starring at me like i did something wrong or stuff like that i was weirded out for a second but i tend not too notice her,and some hours later i was alone strolling cause my parents and older sister was in a restoraunt really near by ordering pizza any way so while i was strolling i saw the girl again and she decided to like aproach me like i know her saying "Why are you even here you arent even cosplaying and you look like an idiot wearing your CARTOON outfit." Then she left after that i was shocked that she said cartoon and at the same time mocking me why i was there not in a cosplay while she wasnt even wearing anything like a cosplay or even any anime i know.she dressed like a normal every day person too....xP

Hearing about backstage would be pretty cool!
As far as with the lady at the desk, I think she should have at least been... maybe corrected? About using the word crap. She is behind the desk creating a service. She is not a buddy or anything like that, so it's not right of her to use that word while in uniform. Maybe what you should have done was just say that you were at an anime convention, not an anime crap. I wasn't there or anything, but depending on the mood, maybe you could have made a joke about it while at the same time educating her. I shudder to think what would have happened if she said that around an uber fanboy.
Still, it leaves a bad taste in my mouth when people are rude like that. I mean, how do you react to someone's ignorance? If it were me, I would have just marveled over the costumes and maybe asked questions since it's obvious that people put their all into them. Oh, wait, I already do that.

When I went to anime con 2k15 that was my first convention and I saw those gymnastic kids you were talking about and they were incredibly rude! I was Cosplaying as Ciel from black butler and I walked past a group of them to get to the bathroom with a few of my friends who went there with me one of them wasn't COSPLAYing the other was and they were kind of in the way of the entrance so I politely say "excuse me, I need to get through here." And they give me this look of pure hatred and disdain and reluctantly move out of the way, and as I'm walking into the bathroom I hear one of them say, loud enough for me and my friends to hear "ew what freaks" and the person next to her nods in agreement. I was just thinking to myself wtf? That was totally uncalled for.

There are 4 things you can get from non - congoers in Singapore; blatant stares (especially from old people, it's just stares but to me it's just making people uncomfortable and kinda rude), questions (like "what's going on here", "is there some kind of japanese event", "can we take a pic"), praises if you're lucky (one time I was cosplaying leafa and there are 2 women asked to take a pic with me and they told me my cosplay is wonderful X333), or people calling the police on you for indecency. The last one is just the worst and it did happen during AFA SG 2013. There was a Matoi Ryuko cosplayer in Senketsu form and THIS LADY CAME OUT OF NOWHERE JUST STARTED SCOLDING HER AND SHE FUCKING CALLED THE POLICE ON HER BECAUSE OF INDECENCY. I mean okay, her underboobs were revealed but seriously, what is the difference between underboobs, sideboobs, and cleavages? At least it's not the WHOLE boobs! Anyway the police came, fortunately they let her go because it's clearly not a public indecency, but the damage has been done. All because of that one woman who disregarded the fact that there's a con going and this kind of costumes is normal.

And in the real world there are going to be people who say nasty things to you, your friends, the way you dress, your interest in anime etc. Not everyone will be your friend. Anime, although popular in Japan, is a niche interest in the West and most people who aren't fans will have negative reservations. You can't force them to think or say otherwise. One of my friends says that most of the anime I watch is crap or shitty, and another one of my friends says that Inuyasha was shitty because of one teeny design flaw in a single episode of the anime and that Kagome is annoying. I personally, get highly offended but let go of it. I understand that not everyone likes anime or loves it, but at least let me talk about it for once. I never get the chance to talk about anime to any of my friends besides one I met this year at Naka-Kon 2015, one actually introduced me to Fairy Tail but then began hating anime again after watching 3 episodes of it. I can litterally qoute some of the most common phrases of my friends.
    "Anime sucks"
"-Bleach/InuYasha/Fairy Tail/Naruto- is stupid" I almost punched Alex in the face for mentioning Naruto and Bleach.
"Why does he look like a girl?"
    "That anime is stupid"
"I'm sick of hearing you talk about anime"
    "I don't get it"
    "I don't like it, it's old"
"Can you just shut up about all that anime crap for once?" I actually got in a huge arguement with my friend Kayla over this because I hardly ever talk about anime with anyone who isn't too interested in it or doesn't like it. I hardly ever get to talk about my own interests at all, and when I talk about my hobbies and other things I do after school, someone allways cuts me off to talk about something else. I once defined what Yaoi, Yuri and Hentai was because I had a couple Yaoi buttons on my lanyard"Eat, sleep, yaoi" and "Please don't tell my parents what yaoi means" from Nani Wear and was called a huge pervert because I knew what they were, and at the time had only read 2 yaoi doujin and seen a few hentai clips. I still don't even invest all that much in Yaoi, Hentai and I'm not even interested in Yuri! Yes, I am bisexual and some people in my grade know this because I dated a girl last year who was a grade above me, but that doesn't mean I have to like Yuri.

I'm A Continent, Not A County! I feel your pain. i literately Have no one to talk to anime or manga about. My friends say the exact same thing and the few people that i find who are interested in anime well we don't exactly get along.
And on the rare occasions I do get to talk about it my friends are completely rude about it.
But then i have to sit and listen to their talk about twilight or the vampire dairies and Breaking bad, and I can't say a single bad word about them even though personally I hate all three. I understand that they like them and we have different interest so I tend not to say anything rude and respect their likes and hobbies, And pretend to listen to their ramble even though I usually just block it out and day dream.
I actually lose a lot of friends over this since anime is my life and their talking shit about it.
And they say I am stupid when I tell them I want to be a manga artist.
So I just start to ignore them. Their not my friends If their not supportive to me and what I want to do even if they don't like it, They should just keep their trap shut like I do and say things like "Anime's not for me" instead of "Anime's shit"
So i am currently a loner but that's okay since I got a pencil and paper and the INTERNET!!!!

Went to mcm one year and it was on at the same time as a college/school event then the next day it was a smoking/vape event and then the next day it was some Christian stuff. The east entrance was close to mcm attendees so we had to walk like 10-20 extra minutes around the side to get inside. So we are walking a back to our room at 7pm which is on the east side and the group ahead of us is a group of girls . This girls were just normal cosplayers nothing special. So we all walk past a group of middle age guys there for the smoking/vape event. So they don't say anything until they walk past my part of the group and say "yeah there is some anime s*** here better leave while we can" " yeah some f*** up s*** here". Like this group was so close minded. Like for once I felt so angry and like there are kids at this event like 8 years old and these guys were just swearing out loud.

First off, I think i may go to Momocon 2015 this year but I see myself going to Anime Blues Con 2015 in Tennesee. If I go to either one, I may either go as Kirito (Sword Art Online) or Archer (Fate/Stay Night). If I do go to Momocon 2015, I hope I get to see you.
Anyways.... At Momocon 2013 there was a few people that said I should be somewhere else (I was cosplaying as Nick Fury from the Marvel Series). I asked why and they said that you're not cosplaying as an anime character. It didn't escalate or anything but I kinda asked should they be there SINCE THEY AREN'T COSPLAYING ANYTHING!!! They got ticked off and decided to call staff security. Fortunately, me and staff security cleared things up. As for the two people who confronted me, I think they got kicked out for supposedly assaulting a cosplayer for I don't know what. I want your insight from not only Convention Reviews but from everyone else. Do you think you should cosplay an anime character to be at an anime convention or not?
