Upcoming citrus preserving vids will be on marmalade, Moroccan preserved (my favorite!), zest, dehydrating, etc. But for now the larder is full with jars to be enjoyed until the next harvest kicks in.
Same here. Our lemons did incredibly well. and the Satsumas. For some reason we got only 5 oranges, though, as opposed to hundreds we had the past few years. The canned ones are good. My favorite though are the Moroccan preserved lemons. The flavor is SO good. I have a few jars in the making - it will be one of the next vids. What other citrus do you grow besides lemons? We're kinda limited here. In fact, the last freezes did a number on the lemon trees. Sigh.
I canned my oranges in water that I had added a few tablespoons of frozen orange juice concentrate to. they tasted pretty good. I really don't like to add sugar to my canning if I don't have to. I am going to do some lemons soon so this video is helpful.
Emily, they held up fine. We ate the last jar a month ago. Jars with fruit that had some overlooked seed in it had a little bit of a 'bitter-ish' taste, so it's important to get them all out. I found out since that there is an enzyme product on the market that will 'eat off' the skins entirely if the fruit segments are submerged. Forgot the name of it - that would be a game changer, as the prep is so very time consuming.
I have tried crushing eggshells to feed to the chickens and they just look at them like they don’t know what to do with them. What might I be doing wrong?
That's odd. Ours gather and pick at them. They don't eat them at once, but over time. Perhaps your feed has enough calcium in it to where they are not interested? How finely do you crush the shells?
@@homesteadinginnorthflorida well...pretty small but not so small they can’t pick them up. I’ve always let them loose but I got a new flock in September and decided not to let them roam because I get attached and it breaks my heart when my favorite inevitably gets picked off by a hawk or something. Maybe the new ones will be willing to eat shells. We also doubled the size of their coop, which wasn’t small to begin with. I hate keeping them cooped up but hopefully they’ll be happy in their big home.
@@MariVictorius - I feel you. It's ALWAYS the favorite ones that get snatched, and it's so heart braking. So far we never lost one to a hawk. Coons are the bigger threat around here. And foxes. Sigh.
@@homesteadinginnorthflorida I tried it today/ Thank you for the great video. It was very easy to do. Thank you. Now I feel confident I can make a video for others to learn in my community
@@TriniSimpleLiving - that's awesome! If you have lemons, check into preserved lemons. I have a video on it, but there are many others on youtube as well. Preserved lemons taste so good and only require salt, not canning!
I see I'm not alone! :) I don't like sugar. Sweet is not appealing to me, so the rest of the family 'suffers', as I cut it down in everything.. LOL Sugar is so overused, even in savory dishes, it's sad.

Awesome video, thanks for sharing with us 🥰 looking forward to seeing more.
Thank you! :)
Thanks for the video! I have more lemons this year than last and I like how you preserved them.

That's a great idea!
Awesome
Thanks!
thank you for this canning recipe.I have alot of Portugals can this be done with Portugals too.
Yes. It can be done with all varieties of citrus. Just make sure to remove seeds and pith.
That is so smart to use the microwave to sterilize the jars. Am going to do that from now
It's not intended to sterilize them, just to warm them up to avoid cracked jars when adding hot contents. :)
Very good 💕 💕
Thank you!
Merry Christmas ❤️ 🎄 🎄 💕
Thank you - same to you. stay happy & healthy.
Would the processing time change with altitude or is the time the same across the board?
It does change with altitude.
@@homesteadinginnorthflorida Thank you.
@@happycows any time. 🙂
I'm new to canning . Am planning to waterbath before pressure canning
Go for it!
Great video! What's the shelf life?
At least 11 month, as we just ate the last jar from the batch in the video.
@@homesteadinginnorthflorida Thank you so much.
It's now a year later, just wondering how the quality of the oranges are and how they held up and if they taste great. Thanks!

How long will the fruit last?
If done correctly, it will last indefinitely. BUT - the quality will start to suffer after a year.
@@homesteadinginnorthflorida thank you! This helps.
Where the hiump that accent coming from.😂 I like it.
Germany. :)
