  • This week on DAFT (Dumb Apple Farmer Talk): Paul discusses how to spot a ripe apple. When choosing which apples are ready to pick, you want to consider three things: Background Color, Seed Color, and Taste. A ripe apple will have a yellow-creamy background color, dark seeds, and a juicy flavor that isn't starchy or overly sour.

Then there's the other side of that debate. I have too much room and planted more apple trees than I seem to have time to manage ( about 30). When they are all doing well it's a glorious thing to be out there enjoying the harvest. But even picking them can be stressful when you don't have enough space to store them. I had two consecutive years when my two peach trees conspired against me and cranked out 400 pounds of peaches. It was nuts.
