Hope you're a lot younger than me, I fell under the everlasting spell of the Stones back in 68 when Honky Tonk Women Cameron out. In real time, as the 'kids' would say nowadays.
And guess which was the first Stones song I tried to play guitar on and failed as miserably as any other guitar player except Keef

Tremendous video, very revealing of how the stones collaborated and how Keith's Mastery of the guitar-shaped so many songs. I know many people who think you was only a rhythm guitar player, but that's among the most ludicrous Concepts in history

Totally agree, Keith Richards totally killed it on the guitar, shaping tons of iconic Rolling Stones songs. His one-of-a-kind style and badass approach to both rhythm and lead guitar have left a massive mark on rock history. It's seriously crazy to think of him as just a rhythm player when he's been such a huge part of the band's vibe and success. Richards' talent and imagination have definitely cemented his spot as one of the all-time guitar greats in rock 'n' roll.

Anyway, the reason I remember the summer of 1972 was EXILE ON MAIN STREET. I was far too young to even begin to understand it. Nevertheless, I was thunderstruck by Rocks Off, Torn and Frayed, Tumbling Dice, Shine A Light, Sweet Virginia.....
Since it's release, I've been magically in touch with the Exile, non-stop to this day.

There's only this one time Keef let me down, back in 2000.
The Stones were to do a gig in my hometown of Zagreb, Croatia. Should've been their fifth or sixth over the years
Anyway, a Stones gig costs a serious fortune, I've seen the numbers. Only a portion goes as artists' fees. Most of it is the huge costs of the huge, extremely complex organisation.
Very much as is the case with any other major stadium playing band, in principle.
Anyway, the local promoters did not have money for the advance payment. They talked to commercial banks in Zagreb, all of which turned them down (effing peasants).
Then thry came to this bank where at the time I worked as the general counsel. The CEO was not a Stones fan. But he was a good friend of mine and he knew I was a Stones fanatic.
So he gave me 24 hours to come up with a risk-free financing of the forthcoming gig.
So I did. I did not reinvent the wheel. I only copy pasted the deal structure we had with international transport companies in respect of their ticket sales.
It worked. The bank's board ok'd the proposal. The promoters could hardly believe.
We negotiated the legal documents (you'd be surprised at the number, the scope and the length). I still keep execution (ready for signing but not signed) docs.
The promoters asked about my legal fees. I said a couple of backstage Jacks with Keef and/or other Stones would be just fine. If I got to shake hands with Keef, I don't think I would have washed that hand for a long time.
For days, I could hardly work, sleep, eat or even drink in expectation...
Keef, while climbing a ladder at his library, looking for a book (yeah, right) fell and broke his arm.
A lot of concerts, including the one in Zagreb were cancelled. As were at least a couple of years of my expected lifetime.
Anyway, it wasn't Keef"s fault. The guy doesn't even know I exist, let alone that I'm such a huge fan.
And, together with the rest of the Stones, he gave me so much joy over the decades, I couldn"t hold it against Keef if he nuked my home😂
So, thank you Keef, thank you each of the Stones.
My heart goes out to those, alive or deceased who worked closely with, and contributed a lot to, the Stones: Ian Stewart, Bobby Keys, Marry (Merry) Clayton, Ry Cooder and countless others.
Great story; a real illustration of what hard work a Stones fan will do, to see the Stones. They owe you, and everybody who backed you, a concert.
There's Keef and there's the rest of the guitar playing world.

Great job! Thanks for uploading. Not a huge fan of theirs, but they do know how to work a crowd. Using local well known talent for the women singing. If they can't "sang", they gone. These dudes have ALL the tricks , probably made some up themselves . Just thinking out load.... OK, I won't go out of my way to listen or watch them, yet if I do happen to watch 4-5 minutes of a live show, I'm probably gonna watch the whole thing..... I feel better getting that of my chest.
Keef is proof that you don't need, or have to shred on a guitar to be great, his riffs are among the best in the business and he's never even thought about shredding, Keef is an icon, a living legend, he's not the greatest guitarist, but, he's one of the best, his riffs prove it !!

Thank you for including Ventilator Blues. Agree with all riffs except one Start Me Up to me was a throw away song. Star Star , Parachute Woman or Live with Me maybe instead ?
So, what do Ventilator Blues have to do with each other?
And yes, Start Me Up was a throwaway, first made a few years after Exile [Ventilator Blues). It was first meant to be a reggae thing.
Luckily, at their nadir, the Stones were scraping through their discards in order to put together the Tattoo You. They bumped across diamonds like Start Me Up and Waiting On A Friend.
It took a lot of booze & dope before they came up with the Start Me Up as we know it. Keef's riff went on to make history....like so many others.
The Waiting On A Friend video clip stars Ronnie. But the truth is, the song was recorded in 1969, with Mick T. At a time Ronnie was no more than a Stones fan, just like you or me.
The reason for the delayed release: trying to save whatever they could from the manager who fucked them over. And tax reasons: remember the Exile to the south of France, Keef's Ville Nelcotte [now owned by some Russian big time crime lord) and, of course the EXILE ON MAIN STREET.
Great complimation clearly Rolling Stones highlights. One idea left out, Bill Wyman in his first book Stone Alone claimed that the riff for Jumpin' Jack Flash was created by Brian Jones & him (reccieving no writing credits) when Jagger & Richard walked in & heard them playing the riff, they simply said,'Keep playing that' Stones lost a few musicians by not sharing writing credits & the royalty money the writing credits generated. I thought the Doors handled those conflicts best by saying lyric & music credits went to the Doors as a band. If you read Wyman's first book he is very concerned with money as well as women.

I probably did not choose the same list but yours is really interesting. Personnaly I miss Beast of burden, great riff and one of my favorire all periods. I add probably All down the line, Bitch ... But there are many others which could pretend to be in the 2O best riffs. Congrats again for your excellent work.

I thought this was a fantastic list. As a guitar player - and Stones lover - I think that Can’t You Hear Me Knocking is their greatest riff, and possibly one of the top 3 greatest riffs of all time. It’s so easy to just put Satisfaction as the top lick and that, to me, is just sort of lazy. Tumblin’ Dice and Gimme Shelter are far superior. It’s arguable that Keith has never been the best guitarist in his own group. However, it’s inarguable that he’s one of, if not the greatest, riff master in R&R history. It’s hard for me to imagine someone who has come up with so many instantly recognizable and iconic riffs.
I saw them in 1965 in the Greensboro Coliseum. Wow I was lucky but I’ve seen quite a few good bands. I saw Jimmy Hendrix at Atlanta Pop Festival so the Allman Brothers basically grow up anyways the loose goes on and on but thank God for blues music and southern rock andold alternative music you alternative is I have no idea what the fuck they’re doing. God bless everybody and hope you get what you need.

I hate ro be a nerdy curmudgeon about the English language, but this is an excellent piece about the ROLLING STONES' MUSIC, for God's sake, and they've got the narrator pronouncing "lead guitar" (phoenetically) "LED guitar!" Every time he says it, it stands out like puke on a tuxedo. Also, the narrator is the VOICE of a documentary, and he himself hasn't got the cultural chops to be aware of lead- and rhythm-guitar playing. It's rhe little rhings. Especially when they distract so cacaphonically from the high quality of the writing, shooting and editing of this video.

How about some of Mick Taylor’s riffs. Or Brian’s riffs. His slide in little red rooster still blows my mind 60 years on. Or his sitar in Paint it Black. I do love Keith’s riffs Chuck Berry meets Jimmy Reed and Bo Diddly. Always a groove and a swagger. Partly due too to Charlie’s swing sound.

When you contemplate the fact that the Stones are credited for writing more than one hundred and sixty songs you can be sure that some of them are going to be considered good. Unfortunately way to many of their compositions are not worth the tape that they are recorded on. These hacks have lasted due to the quantity rather than the quality of their work. Their suck factor totally out ways their successes by a long shot.

You lost me and I turned the video off when you said led and rhythm guitar. Your lack of music knowledge shows. Lead when pertaining to a guitar is pronounced leed not led. It means the guitar player is playing melodies and most likely will perform the solo.

I have watched and listened to many Stones songs , I think wood should return to Rod Stewart, there is one video where Mick Jagger has Mick Taylor playing with the band doing “ can’t yo hear me knocking “ , Wood keeps trying to be spotlighted, and his guitar work is nowhere as good as mick Taylor, the look of distain on Mick Taylor’s face says it all , I feel wood is done, washed up , so Waddy Wachell from the X-pensive Winos is a far better fit !!! it always appears wood is trying to undermine Keith!!!!

1] You talk too much. The music is more important. You must have been vaccinated by a phonograph needle. 2] You are wrong about Brown Sugar. On the record it was done with an acoustic guitar over driven through a cheap cassette recorder. I don't think they even used a DI box.
