”The Kalevala (Finnish: Kalevala, IPA: [ˈkɑle̞ʋɑlɑ]) is a 19th-century work of epic poetry compiled by Elias Lönnrot from Karelian and Finnish oral folklore and mythology.”
This might be one explanation to the way we Finns use our language. I don’t know about Tuomas but many songwriters (and poets) in Finland create something new but not forgetting their roots. Tuomas isn’t just a great composer. He is a great poet, too!

Kalevala still has some influence on how us Finns speak and write. For example, alliteration - which was, I think, kind of a mnemonic device in the oral tradition - remains quite popular in sayings and slogans. As a copywriter, I certainly (ab)use it a lot.
As an aside re: Nightwish, Marko with his long hair and shamanistic beard looks somewhat like Väinämöinen, the wise old man and the central character in Kalevala.

About your beautiful statement from the beginning - let me tell you a secret: most of us are in the same situation. We discovered in Floor Jansen, many of us after a lifetime, those qualities that we thought were possible only in our dreams. I have learned that truly loving someone means wanting the best for them. We are all glad that Floor exists, that she is not just a dream, an ideal without a correspondent in reality. We rejoice in her joys and we grieve over her sorrows. The fact that Floor exists gives color to life, for us, the other ordinary mortals. I can't hear her playing "Shallow" without a pressure on my chest and tears in my eyes. I said that so you don't think you're the only one in this situation.

@@GuylainPrince I am glad that she exists on the same planet as me. She is beautiful - inside as well as outside. I am glad she's sharing a little more with with us here on RUclips. I appreciate her obvious need to separate her work and home life, but it is gratifying to realise that she is genuine when so many "stars" are all show and little substance. And it is clear that her and her husband were meant to be together. His vlog contributions when he was on tour with Sabaton were funny, but hinted at a kind and gentle man behind the drummer. He reminds me physically of my younger brother when he was in his twenties, with sleeves of tattoos and long hair.

Here is an ex-drummer, not a professional one, of course. I can tell you something: many of them are "big bears", we say in French. He might be scary, at first sight, but all fluffy and kind in the inside. I, for example, was quite romantic. That is why I learned to play the guitar, to express this part of me (to girls, at the time). The need for protection (the wall of drums in front of you) might indicate a sensitive heart that need to be protected.

In a way this is a "sequel" to another Nightwish song - "Élan". In its lyrics there is passage _"Meet me where the cliff greets the sea..."_ while "How's the Heart?" concludes it as _"We met where the cliff greets the sea. Shared a story, took the leap"-_

But thank you for adding that little mildly tongue-in-cheek interpretation of "you know where, you've been there". I almost laughed (it middle of the night here...), so creative! :D I am refusing to believe there is anything haphazard at all with Tuomas' writings! :)))

    • @Pitchblackbones
      @Pitchblackbones 4 года назад +7

Bingo! This is what I referenced in my comment for Pan, talking about how Tuomas does an excellent job of connecting ideas, themes, melodies, and even specific lyrics, such as "where the cliff meets the sea" which appears identically in this song and Elan. If you're going through the back catalog, you'll be fascinated to see where intentional connections arise.
I think he began this practice in either Imaginaerum or Dark Passion Play, (I think it was Dark Passion Play, c.2007), where Meadows of Heaven is referenced in Poet and the Pendulum, and Imaginaerum (c.2011) has SEVERAL in-album references. With the last two albums, he seems to be taking greater initiative to tie verses between albums, much like literary foreshadowing and references back to the original source of the idea (perhaps before Tuomas had fully developed the concept with his recent works, which are typically far more broad in scope).
We could probably have a full-length college level course on just the literary and scientific connections and references within Nightwish's music 😂.

The message of this song is very powerful, the power of human empathy to literally save people (burn the rope/dull the blade) and bring us together (the fire is warm, come on in). Nice reaction, I can see that you are in awe of Floors vocals and Tuomas’ lyrics. Now, answering to you about the finnish poetry as you wished in a comment on the last analyse. I am not so familiar with poems as I am with music lyrics but I’ll tell you my opinion. Finnish as a language is very comblex and has a tonns of synonyms, thats why google translate has so much difficulties in translating it. You can tell one thing in maybe eight different ways or like a word ’run’ has at least 14 different words you can use. Also finnish grammar gives an oportunity to write a sentence multiple ways to get the same result. Old finnish poetry had a structure where two different kind of sentences with totally different words made one joined meaning. If you are more interested you could look from wikipedia finnish national epic Kalevala there you can find examples of it. Modern Finnish poetry is very versatile and wide spread. There are poets in every age group and in every genre of poetry. Many people also write poems for themselves and make self published books. Diversity of finnish language can be seen in song lyrics too. I would say that finnish people are quite a poetic folk. Maybe Tuomas feels more at home using ’old style’ words because often their meaning is more flexible and gives him more room to give different meanings to his lyrics. I’ll link one poem to you from Eino Leino who is considered one of the pioneers of finnish poetry. His poem has been made into a song and in this vid it has been translated to english too, it is sang by Vesa-Matti Loiri, a finnish actor/musician. Enjoy. ruclips.net/video/3KdDCT56NgQ/видео.html

I don't know about Finnish poetry, but for me Tuomas does with words what Floor does with the voice. I don't know if you know what I mean. Yes, the music is fantastic and we all love Floor, but the NW lyrics are overlooked by 99% of RUclips reactors. And it's a pity because they are phenomenal, as you say, you don't hear that kind of words in other songs. Tuomas puts a lot of effort in the music but also on the lyrics. And just a final thing: after you have done reactions to all the songs, I hope you'll get comfortable, put your headphones on and listen to the whole album a few times. Your reactions and analysis made me realize the connection between different songs and change the meaning of certain words, even if it's not a "concept album" there's a common theme that creates a story from the first song to the last one. So maybe a final reaction/analysis of the whole album may be interesting.Merci!

The sad thing is, that itself is really really Dutch. Floor and Nightwish are not well known in the Netherlands, althought that may have changed considerably since Beste Zangers.
And to make matters worse: I didn't even care much for Beste Zangers. My brother pointed me to Henk Poort with the Sound of Silence, after which I heard The phantom of the opera by Henk and Floor. It resulted in me buying the Human:II:Nature CD, and you helping me to understand the lyrics :-)

Very nice to see that you can enjoy it as well ..
And as for Floor, I have have the same problem as you, for over 18 years, I have been following her since 2002, and for me she even has only gotten better for over the years, so that she really rises above everyone not only musically but also as a person .. really my undisputed number 1.
It is widely said that Tuomas has only the second verse have been written about Floor, but the way i see it, the entire song can be about Nightwish and Floor ..
Floor the woman without a child, who was asked during her recovery from a burnout to help the band get out of the problems caused by the loss of Anette during the world tour in 1012.
Both have their problems, but agree to make something of the tour together, and keep the band alive.
So they decide to solve their problems together and to forget them further.
I personally think the lyric "burn the rope and dance some more" translates that fantastic!
"Here is one from me" is probably a lyric that Floor added about how Floor got to know her husband (Hannes, the drummer for Sabaton, maybe the luckiest man on the planet) on the Nightwish world tour in 2012.
Together they had a child (Freya, is 1 day older than my youngest) ..
but of course this is only how i see it, and I am actually very curious about your analysis ..Thats the beauty of Music... everyone can interpret it in their own way.

I do think there's something about Northern Europe generally and Finland in particular being predisposed to the more evocative lyrical style you note, mixing new and old, metal and folklore, the city and the sea, sadness and joy, modern life and timeless things.
Others do the same, I just think those cold Northern lands tend to do it better.
    Well done!

Another wonderful reaction. I enjoyed your tale of falling in love with Floor and I think most of us here can relate to that in some way or another. As for the song, it's a very beautiful song with a lovely message. I also love the small but simple details in the music, like how both the drums and the guitars mimic a beating heart at different points of the song, without drawing too much attention to it and changing the flow of the song. I look forward to hearing your deeper thoughts in the analysis!

"Floor" derives from "Flora". I'm sure I don't need to tell you what that is Latin for. 🙂 "Rose uprooted" refers to Floor uprooting herself from her life in the Netherlands. It's nice how "to uproot" is actually used in reference to plants as well as people, so it works well as a lyric.

Another thing to note, as you may already know, (having fallen in love and all, *wink wink*) whether intentional or not, "now there's one who came from me" and the child references in the video correlate to Floor's own family, she has a young daughter, maybe 3-4 years old now (named Freya) with her husband, who plays the drums in the band Sabaton. As it turns out, Freya is the child that Floor is playing with in the "Noise" music video. Perhaps there is some level of reflection on the topic of new parenthood, and growing to "become" an elder, or one who offers guidance, at least to this child. Floor is also the youngest member of the band (I believe trailing Kai, the drummer by one or two years), so this chapter of her life may be something that Tuomas took inspiration from, watching her grow from her previous band, and seeing how she's developed as a member of their own band. Just a thought! :)

    Regarding the part about Floor.
I was only five years old when I first listened to Nightwish. It was their musical video for song "Nemo" which was played on some musical channel (I don't remember much about circumstances for obvious reason). It was the first time I listened to metal, even though I didn't know what metal was or about different genres. I think, this might be the reason why I love metal so much, because it impressed little me so much.
But I learned further about metal later in life when I stumbled across After Forever, first band of Floor. I consider Floor as my metal mama :D All kinds of metal bands came into my life after, but these two bands will forever hold a special place in my heart. Oh, how overjoyed I was when I learnt about her joining Nightwish! It's like two of my parents coming together, but without having any relationship before (this sounds strange, I know).
Btw, I highly recommend listening to After Forever's album "Invisible Circles". It may have less intricate lyrics, compared to Tuomas' pieces of art, bit it's a conceptual album about dysfunctional family and how it affects a child. She sings there with much more raw power and almost theatrical emotions. The only downside in this album for me is voice actors, but everything else is just absolutely wonderful.
P.S. I wanted to write about what Floor means to me, but I can't describe my feelings toward her even in my native language.

Thank you friar for navigating yourself in the realms of music! Like many people here I love your analyses and enjoy your take and perspective on the songs. Your focus and patience bring your personal meaning to the songs brought by Tuomas. Like he said, he wants us to feel and listen to the songs in our own way. I think Edgar Poe is not very far in is thought and song process. Like many people commented the words of Poe feel like a reaching mosaic that Tuomas can always go back for inspiration. I realy like that dynamic. He also has many others like Nightwish fans already pointed out.
Beste Zangers brought Floor Jansen to a wide range audience! I was familiar with her before the show. I have seen her and the band live in 2018 in...
Salut Gulain! I'm working my way through your REACTION/ANALYSE videos, and I'm enjoying them immensely. Your comments about falling in love with Floor and your comments about her being a cultural ambassador are bang on. From what I've gathered, Beste Zangers allowed Floor to be a cultural ambassador for the metal scene to her home country of the Netherlands. In the COVID shutdown, Floor has been getting more active on social media, including doing an interview with Pedro from A&P Reacts. I don't think she's done many other interview with reactors, but I can just imagine what an interview between you and Floor would be like. However given your focus on the lyrics it may be even more interesting to see an interview between you an Tuomas.

I have a same kind of history than you. Of course I knew the Nightwish's history and Floor superficially, but the Bestezangers 2019 waked me up. First the "Phantom" with Henk Poort and then then "Shallow". Who is this gorgeous lady? Before I've seen her singing "O Holy Night" in Finnish" when heavily pregnant. It was also great. Then I dig deeper and now I'm so much wiser (as you are also). For me as a simply man this track is a relief. No hidden meanings and no references of the things I don't know. The message is kindness, caring and love in general (in the first verse). The "rope" here is a hanging rope (depression and suicide?) and the "blade" is hate. Burn and dull them and join us for the dance of Life. Tuomas wrote the second verse about Floor (we met where the cliff greets sea...and so on). It's about her connection of her husband and a child. Very beautiful song and a very beautiful reaction from you! And the acoustic version is just phenomenal.

This song made me cry several times because with each time listeing, I discovered something new about it. Many things were already pointed out by some of the most popular comments here, like the call back to Elan and the references to Floor's child and burn-out, so I'm not going to repeat those.
A part of the lyrics that reaches right for my heart and grips it tight is "burn the rope and dance some more" and "dull the blade and dance some more" respectively. To me this is a direct reference back to the poet and the pendulum. Tuomas said that that song was a way for him to kill himself through his music, so that he did not do it in real life. With these lines now in "how is the heart" it is like he is finally concluding that chapter of his life for good. And he is doing so joyfully. As you said, the whole song is a celebration. A celebration of being alive, of living with and for oneself and others. It asks and simultaniously answers wh it is wll worth it, too. The answer is in the heart.

If you are interested and want to know more, just let me know and I can give you some more information. One little piece of information I give you already now: he invites many guest musicians and singers for his projects. I really appreciate your effort in subtitling your videos, as my French is not nearly good enough to be able to follow the way you analyse the lyrics here. So, keep up the great work, I think it is a valuable addition to the many, many very shallow reactions you can find flooding the internet from people joining the Nightwish/Floor Jansen bandwagon.

    • @GuylainPrince

I will say something very technical. I would say that is is the actual Mozar of "prosody". This word means : tha ability to bring together words and music (prose + melody=prosody). I think his ability reaches more than the metal subgenre. He brought metal to the level of classical music. Nothing less.

Thank you once again, it was a great pleasure watch this one.
Second verse in this song, that is what Tuomas wrote to Floor and her family. (I saw already comments to this here)
Yes, we all love Floor. If I see her interview, I guess I start happy smile when she has got second word out... :D
BTW, reactor from Canada (A&P Reacts) made an interview with Floor, really nice. If you have time pls check it out. She spoke also what kind of difficulties she had with this album. And, cos we have heard from Kai Hahto maybe first time, that there is 3 songs what NW will not perform in live. And later have heard that Shoemaker is one of those. And now Floor said they MIGHT think it again, cos so many have asked that song!!! So, maybe there is small hope, that they will do it in concert!!! And that Floor´s comment to "Tribal" :D .
About Finnish poetry or songwriting. Someone already took Kalevala as a sample. And we must remember how Kalevala has strong roots in Karelia, while some poems are collected also from Estonia. But Tuomas comes from Finnish side Karelia (bigger part is in Russian side). So, who knows, might his ancestors have had poem makers in their family lines. In that area those things went often in family lines. I mean they might have gone several hundreds of years inside same family...

Tuomas is a big Edgar Allen Poe fan. The word "paean", used a lot in this song, comes from the works of Poe. One connotation of paean is tribute. Makes that sentence easier to understand.

Yay, a new video! Thanks for the shout out to the Netherlands. We have some amazing music. You already discovered Within Temptation, but Delain is also worth listening to! Delain toured with Nightwish (as opening act) but is a magnificent band in it's own right. Marco of Nightwish did some songs with Delain too by the way. And I still love After Forever, the first (Dutch) band with Floor.
Also I would like to thank you for all the work that goes into these [REACTION] and [ANALYSE] video's. Well, I found many 'tricks of the trade' to cut the production vids. The reaction takes not time at all. For 20 minutes, it takes 40. The analysis takes a bit more time of preparation, but now, everything is live. Even the mistakes. The tedious part are the subtitles. But, hey! they worth every minute I put into them. The joy of sharing with passionate people is invaluable.

Along with the great Dutch bands you mentioned, I would add EX LIBRIS - they are crazy talented with plenty of great original ideas (as witnessed by their newest trilogy "Anne"), to say nothing of having, to my opinion, the second best operatic voice in Metal... If EX LIBRIS keep going, there is a new sun on the horizon.
While speaking of rock legends of your land, I can't go without mentioning AYREON almost instantly. Now THIS would be a universe of Prog music dear Brother Guylain could explore for years (provided he does not already know Arjen Lucassen's oeuvre). And to only think the tall Dutch wizard gets all those wonderful vocalists to sing his parts! The "creme de la creme" of living voices.

Guylain Prince, thank you so much for your wonderful reaction videos, it’s a pleasure to watch them and listen your thoughts. I love the way you are doing them, that you first read the lyrics and then enjoy the musical implementation. It’s unbelievable how much work and love you put in them.
Please don’t laugh at me, everyone has different passions. I’m a Brony, a (43 year old guy from Germany) adult fan of a (Canadian) cartoon series for kids about friendship, My Little Pony - Friendship Is Magic. I just love the characters, the writing for them goes very deep for a kids cartoon, you can identify with them. The stories alway contain a little lesson you can relate to in real life. There is a lot of fanmade art, animations and music. Unfortunately people laugh at us, because they can’t understand how adult people could like a cartoon for little girls. You seem to be an open minded person, so please forgive me for asking you.
It would be an honor if you could listen to 2 fanmade songs. They are a bit in the style of Nightwish, but please don’t expect the same quality, they are made by fans without budget just for fun. You don’t need to do a video, but it would be awesome if you could write your thoughts.
The first one is a lyric video, the second one is instrumental.

The mother tongue of Tuomas, Finnish, is not an Indo-European language. That gives an additional layer to his poetry. The fact that you don't speak English as your first language allows for some out-of-the-box thinking in sentence structures and vocabulary. Especially when your own language is so much different from English.

    • @GuylainPrince
      @GuylainPrince  4 года назад +2

Many times I thougt of that. His English words find a French-Canadian open heart to resonate. Of course, I will 'hear them' with my cultural background. Only thing we can do in these corcumstances, is calling to our common human heart. That is the best I can do.

I wonder if you noticed that those NIGHTWISH songs which talk about things in life and death as a natural occurence, tend (especially lately) to assume the form of folk metal, no matter how serious some of the lyrics may be. The before mentioned "Elan" off their previous record is another "easy" example. Both that and the current one deal with compassion and empathy - and joie de vivre which is associated with "life as it was meant to be". Dark and sad songs for Tuomas are usually reserved to depict inner plight, torments and passions of a creative person, loves unrequited and moments lost. This, as you diagnosed already by the second verse, is overwhelmingly more light than darkness, and I remember Tuomas reiterating that the whole "Human. Nature" is intrinsically an optimistic record. He still believes in us humans you know. :))

    • @GuylainPrince
      @GuylainPrince  4 года назад

I would say that 'Noise' and 'Procession" have a darker perspective on humanity. I haven't listen to the two last songs, yet! In general, the whole album i much more positive and optimistic than negative and pessimistic. So, I agree with that.

The most interesting line here to me is "an act of kindness without an amen", which I take to be a rebuttal if the idea spread by certain religious sects that it is difficult, or even impossible, to be a truly moral person without the guidance of religion.
If that is indeed the meaning of the lyric, I have to agree; religion can strengthen ones resolve to always act in a moral fashion, but that desire to be a good person has to be there from the start. Morality comes from within--it cannot be provided by an external source.
My favorite line, however, is "burn the rope and dance some more", just because there's so much analysis to do on just that one line, especially if you're using the rest of the song, and even some of the previous songs on the album, as context. Regardless of how much context you want to use and how in-depth you want to go with your analysis of that line, it starts with realizing that it's meant to be a colloquialism for staying up late into the night. The "rope" is the wick of an oil lamp--the kind of lamp you'd have for everyday use. Such a lamp would use something inexpensive and easily available as a wick, likely a piece of twine or thin rope. So when you "burn the rope" it means you've been using the lamp for so long that the oil has run out, and now you're just burning the wick.

    • @GuylainPrince
      @GuylainPrince  4 года назад

Hello Trevor! As always, the poetry of Tuomas makes place for many interpretations. For "without an amen", I agree. And, as I said, even for the religious person, being attentive and kind, listening to the one in need is the key element, here. As for the "burning the rope", I know the expression - now, but not when I did the video -, and I understand how it makes full sense in that context. But I would not close the discussion... yet! Since you still have, in the following chorus "dull the blade", which is a clear indication toward "death". Unmistakably. Especially with "Harvest" and "Endlessness" in mind. The rope is bound to carry - also but not only - the meaning of "temptation of death".

Another magnifique reaction Guylain! Although coming from Finland I am not very into Finnish poetry. Mainly because I am like you, living with another mother tongue than the majority of the inhabitants. Finland is a biluangal country by law and besides Finnish there is a small Swedish speaking minority, ca 5 % of the population, that has its rights rooted in our constitution. Of course I am familiar with the Finnish culture, but the Swedish speaking Finns have their own culture.
But in other comments the Finnish mythology epos Kalevala has been mentioned and early in Tuomas' musical journey I think also Kalevala has had an impact on the music and lyrics he created. Greetings from the land of Kalevala.

Guylain, As always, I had a thoroughly enjoyable time watching and listening to you react to Nightwish. I thought I would send along some of my (lengthy) thoughts on the song. I’ve broken it into two parts, with the second part attached as a comment to this comment.
    /We see a mother with no child/
    /We meet a stranger poor, exiled/
/How's the heart while it still beats?/
    /Asks a no one/
    /Another John Doe/
/Sorrow hides well in your shell/
/A fellow man with hurt to spare/
/Dear one, here I am to share the fear/
    /An act of kindness/
    /Without an amen./
To begin, we are introduced to three characters: we [narrator, later referred to as 'me'], a mother, a stranger
    /We see a mother with no child/
How can a mother not have a child? Is the child dead? The "job" of motherhood is to care for a child (one incapable of caring for himself). Is this 'mother' symbolic of anyone who cares for those who need care?
    /We meet a stranger poor, exiled/
I immediately thought biblically [as a devout atheist myself, and knowing that Tuomas is not religiously inclined, I see nothing wrong with appropriating bible ideals in one's writing; I will be quoting the NIV]. Isaiah 58 has God reprimanding his people for seeking Him out through action-less fasting and prayer-giving mere lip service to their godliness:
'3 ...on the day of your fasting, you do as you please and exploit all your workers. 4 Your fasting ends in quarreling and strife, and in striking each other with wicked fists. You cannot fast as you do today and expect your voice [prayers] to be heard on high. 5 Is this the kind of fast I have chosen, only a day for people to humble themselves [KJV: afflict his soul]? Is it only for bowing one's head [praying] like a reed...'
The people are then instructed in the right way for them to behave if they want God to recognize their efforts:
6'Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? 7 Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer [KJV: poor that are cast out] with shelter-when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?'
I also thought of the parable of the Good Samaritan that was told to illustrate who a person's 'neighbour' is when Jesus said to love your neighbour as yourself: a man who was naked, beaten and nearly dead along the roadside was ignored by two religiously devout men, when eventually along came a (despised by the Jews) Samaritan who actually stopped and then cared for the man.
The perspective now shifts from the we/me narrator:
/How's the heart while it still beats?/
    /Asks a no one/
    /Another John Doe/
I have no idea how familiar you are with Nightwish's song, "Nemo", but these three lines brought that song to my mind. In this song, a 'no one' a 'John Doe', asks someone how the heart is while it still beats.
'Nemo' is Latin for 'nobody' or 'no one'. In the song he is "one of the lost ones/the one without a name"--the very meaning of 'John Doe'.
Why does Nemo consider himself lost and what is he looking for? He says he is 'Without an honest heart as compass/.../To find the missing lifeline/.../All I wish is to dream again/My loving heart/Lost in the dark/For hope I'd give my everything.'
It's interesting that his honest/loving heart is his missing lifeline and what he he desires-the heart is, literally, the lifeline of a person, both physically, emotionally, spiritually (if you will). And that heart allows one to have hope, for which Nemo would 'give my everything'.
Nemo seems to have suffered the same fate as the supposedly-religious in the Bible: they were heartless.
The focus now shifts back to the we/me:
/Sorrow hides well in your shell/
/A fellow man with hurt to spare/
There doesn't seem to be any blame here; there is no thoughts of the person deserving his fate, but rather the narrator recognizes instead the sorrow, even though it's hidden beneath a tough exterior.
More importantly, the narrator recognizes humanity: 'a fellow man'.
From what I know of Tuomas, my guess is that he is a secular humanist, and with that philosophy, he most likely believes that humans can be good without god. Secular humanists care about the wellbeing of others because of the acknowledged and shared humanity. The title of the album, after all, is 'Human Nature'. And Tuomas has mentioned in interviews that he believes the album is about the great things within humanity worth celebrating, so I think all songs need to have that as a touchstone when analyzing them.
/Dear one, here I am to share the fear/
    /An act of kindness/
    /Without an amen./
And this is why I believe that he is focusing on the secular humanist aspect: 'without an amen' -- unlike God's people praying to Him in Isaiah, humans should, when they are able, help carry the burdens of others: 'share the fear' and then actually act, and not just pray. For many of us non-believers, the words, "I'll pray for ___" when not followed by actions, ring hollow. Forget the prayers, show acts of kindness.

      /How's the heart/
      /Underneath the silence?/
      /How's the one/
      /Drowning in the mire?/
The chorus is sung with the three part harmony. I think all four of these lines can be asked of both the giver and the receiver of the preceding verse. Givers are often silent and also are drowning in their own mire, and yet reach out to others who are silent and drowning in a mire as well.
      /Let us sound a human paean/
      /Come in, the fire's warm/
'Paean' is such a great choice of words here. It's a song of praise or thanksgiving, but Paean was also a Greek god of healing. And an interesting quote from Wikipedia that by the 4th century a paean was given '...either to implore protection against disease and misfortune, or to offer thanks after such protection had been rendered'
In the song, it's not just paean, but human paean: a praise to humans by humans for their humanity.
The poor and downtrodden are invited in to the circle of humanity, to join by the warming fire.
/Burn the rope and dance some more/
A lot of people seem to think this and the phrase 'dull the blade' hearkens to Tuomas and the song 'The Poet and the Pendulum', but I like to think that the rope line talks more about freeing oneself from the fetters that were binding them down, whether that be Nemo's lost honest heart or the Israelites' need to 'untie the cords of the yoke'. Your burden has been lifted, come in, warm up, dance by our fire.
I won't focus on the following few lines because I believe a lot of people have talked about the nod to Floor and her family.
/We met where the cliff greets the sea/
      /Shared a story, took the leap/
      /Rose up rooted, hid a note/
      /You know where/
      /You've been there/
      /Now there's one who came from me/
/A child of light, another tale/
      /Dear one/
This part really touches me, being a father and all that comes with those feelings for my own children. Of course Floor had a child, but I want to focus on these lines:
/Night will come but not to stay/
      /Oh, why?/
      /The answer's in the/
What night will come? Death? Probably not because it is 'not to stay'. The answer to why the night will not stay is in the thought expressed by the chorus: asking how the heart is and then acting on improving the conditions for the one. So the night most likely is referring to those physical, emotional, spiritual things that get a person down. You can overcome the night by participating in the giving/receiving of that which lifts the heart.

      /Fair winds, my love/
      /Fly towards the calm/
      /Fly utterly lost/
      /Towards a beating heart/
      /A beating heart/
I'm not sure exactly what I think of this last verse. I'll start with the end and the fact that there appears to be two beating hearts (at least it has 'a beating heart' twice). This could represent the mother and child or the two who took a leap?
I like to think of it as the favorable winds of circumstance fly toward the beating hearts of both the giver and receiver of human kindness.
Again, like the song "Harvest", this song celebrates humanity living a life worth living.
      Peace be unto you,
      ~Scott

I see you have become acquainted with Dennis Hoffs. Thank God for Dennis. She translates most of the interviews and other things in the Dutch language. I also loved Floor on this show. What a beautiful concept for a show. No competition! Just 7 great singers honoring each other with a special song each week. So much more personal and emotional than our stupid American Idol type shows. I really was sad to see it come to an end. I agree with your opinion regarding the depth of Tuomas' poetic genius. His poetry is one of the biggest draws for me to Nightwish's music. As you stated, most music lyrics are simplistic and aimed at the masses, focusing on alternate rhyming and common words that flow off the tongue easily. Usually with no more than 3 syllables. Tuomas writes lyrics (poetry) using very sophisticated wording that presents many difficulties for the vocalist to enunciate in a musical format. He also rarely focuses on rhyming. This is a beautifully uplifting song my friend. I think that on the upcoming tour, Nightwish will perform this song in place of "I Want My Tears Back". Both have a very Celtic feeling to them and both allow Troy to play his beautiful pipes. I look forward once again to your in depth analysis of this wonderful song. Be well my wonderful friend. Always a pleasure to spend some time with you and Nightwish. Peace.

Your reactions are always very enjoyable. Very interesting statistic about the Netherlands having the tallest people. I also saw that on more than one chart. I was in the U S Navy for 20 years and made two trips to American Samoa. I’m 6’ tall and most of the men and a few of the women were taller than me. Maybe it was just the area I was in, but these people were very tall ...and wide. 😄🤘

Netherlands have been cultural innovators since the Dutch Masters painted. They have always been a culture unafraid to invent. After all they built the entire country with polders, governed it with an elective monarchy, pioneered much of today's market driven policy, and spread this to the UK after 1688. Where it was largely the basis for the British Empire that took over the world using it's commercial and maritime law.
Geographically Netherlands is between Britain, France, Germany, Scandanavia...so one expects all influences and a kind of filtering of them.
