Just discovered your channel and was immediately drawn to it. Your beautiful sense of space creates an atmosphere that’s perfect for reading. The ambiance is so inviting and calming-I instantly fell in love with it
Your energy is everything✨ my algorithm is doing something good for once🤧 especially after making the conscious decision to consume media/literature made by black women. Honestly so so happy your channel was recommended❤
2:02 reminds me of ‘The Lady with the Dog’ It’s a short story about an affair between two individuals who are both in unhappy marriages. The couple meet while vacationing in Yalta and fall in love. Also, love your energy. You have a beautiful aura!
Hi Anais! I'm so glad YT recommended your channel to me, and at the most coincidental of moments; I was leaving Paris last week and on the RER to the airport I happened to open the app and there your Paris video was on my screen. I watched all your videos as I waited for my plane and then read your substack posts too and I must say, through these two media you've got a way of seeing the world that is interesting and captivating and I implore you to keep writing and dreaming and experiencing as much of life as you can so we can get to read about it through your eyes :) I'm looking forward to your review of Dorian Gray in particular (if you'll do review of the books once you're done) as Wilde's writing in it is rich, vibrant, and pulsates with hedonist desire (and tonnes of homoeroticism) that I personally have not come across in any other book (so far, except maybe Henry and June by Anais Nin). All the best with your semester ahead and I hope you're able to foster your creative pursuits along the way :)
This touched me in a way that I cannot communicate. From the bottom of my heart, thank you so much for your encouragement. I’m so happy that fate brought us together and I’m honored that you took the time out of your day to devote it to me and my work 🥹 you’re amazing and I will definitely review Dorian Gray just for you
I really love the film of Orlando, by Sally Potter & Tilda Swinton, I highly recommend it. Great Autumn list, pretty much adding all of these to my list.
I hope you enjoy The Picture of Dorian Gray (sooo good) and yeah unfortunately that's true about Sylvia Platt but I still enjoyed The Bell Jar. I'm wondering🤔 have you read Kindred by Octavia Butler or The Awakening by Kate Chopin? They were heartbreaking but amazing! Thanks for all the recs and congrats on reaching 2k 🎊 👏🏽
@@AnaisLaure aw thank you, you are gorgeous!! i saw your comment on one of my vids then your channel was suggested and I was like omg! divine book taste, excited to be a new subscriber
you mentioned black feminist novels and queer love stories - if you haven't already, I highly suggest picking up the secret lives of church ladies by deesha philyaw!! (short story collection published in 2020)
I WANNA READ THIS SO BAD!!! It’s been in my tbr forever I need to just buy it but I already have so many books waiting to be read. I will definitely get to it before the year ends
@@AnaisLaure The main character in the story, Eden, is also an American who goes to Paris to pursue her dreams of being a writer... partly inspired by Baldwin's life there. It was an interesting read. I did not care for the hetero relationships (Eden is bi). I did pick up a few tips on how to be a thief----you never know when those skills might come in handy!
Wow I will definitely read this! James Baldwin’s life in France as a Black writer also inspired me greatly. This story was made for girls like me apparently. Thank you for the rec!
Hey Anais! I'm new to your channel but cozy vibes radiates from all your videos! Do you happen to have any advice for a upcoming college freshman who loves writing creatively but doesn't necessary want to major in creative writing (probably minor) and doesn't know what kind of career would fit for a creative like them?
Hi Trinity :) if you plan on majoring in something else other than creative writing, you better love whatever that is a whole lot more. If your reasoning for not majoring in creative writing, even though it’s something you genuinely love, is because you think that there are not many career options out there to sustain a creative writing degree, you’d be very wrong. That’s what a lot of people tell us writers when we want to pursue our art in a career sense, but they’re out there, you just have to look. My advice, as a senior who majors in English and has been unwavering in that decision since my freshman year, is to pursue a degree in whatever subject brings you the most joy. Choose what your soul gravitates towards, and do not listen to outside voices that feign logic. The opportunities will come and trust me that it’s a lot easier to devote your life and career to something that comes naturally to you, something that brings you joy. Also you are very young. Trust me when I say that you do not need to worry about the career shit yet, the time for that will come on its own. I hope this helped even a little bit! If you have any more questions lmk!
Thank you for this nice and cozy video! Also, thanks for the kind words and book recommendations! Despite the difficult situation, I also try to read books. The last one I read is "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" by Milan Kundera. This is a very difficult, complex, however, very intelligent and interesting book. Also, from the last read, the book by the Japanese author Kotaro Isaka "Mantis" is a very clever story disguised as a thriller. In addition, I read books by Ukrainian authors. Now, in contrast, I am reading Moliere's plays :) Thanks again for the nice video!
Feel free to recommend me some good Ukrainian literature! I would love the insight. With that being said, I am consistently praying for the liberation of Ukraine and I hope that your own personal struggles and battles of every day life take a turn for the better 🩷 please be safe
@@AnaisLaure First of all, we should note the book "Clouds" by Ivan Nechui-Levytskyi, which was written in 1874. It describes the difference in worldviews of Ukrainians and Russian-imperialists. For example, there is a dialogue between Ukrainian and Russian students. A Ukrainian student studies European philosophers, thinkers, and artists, and a Russian student tells him that in the Russian Empire, instead of philosophers and intellectuals, there are soldiers who will kill European philosophers, intellectuals, and artists. 150 years have passed, and Russian propagandists say the same thing, word for word, on television and on the Internet! Therefore, Ukraine is now protecting not only itself, but also the entire civilized world from Russian criminals.
@@AnaisLaure Next, we should pay attention to the work of Ivan Bagryany. He wrote many interesting books, for example, "Tiger Catchers", "Garden of Gethsemane", "Man Running over the Abyss", "Circle of Fire". "Tiger Hunters" - describes how Ukrainians, sent by the Soviet authorities to Siberia, survived and how they resisted the Gulag concentration camp system. "Garden of Gethsemane" is about the struggle of an individual who was illegally imprisoned by the prison system. This book was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature, but the premature death of the author prevented it. "A man runs over the abyss" - about the struggle of the Ukrainian people during the Second World War.
@@AnaisLaure Among modern authors, Oksana Zabuzhko's essay "The Longest Journey" should be noted - it is about the beginning of the war on February 24, 2022. As far as I know, this essay has been translated into English.
@@AnaisLaure Also, among modern authors, Vasyl Shklyar and his book "Black Sun" should be noted, it shows the truth about how the war began. Also a relevant book is "Job's Call Sign. Chronicles of the Invasion" by Oleksandr Mykhed. Also translated into English.
A lot of people love Virginia Woolf. I’ve been putting off reading cause she’s white (I do this with all white authors lol) but I think i’ll give her a chance.
LMAOO THATS SO ME. I stray away from white feminist readings because I prioritize Black literature, especially written by women. Like white feminism literally has nothing to say about us Black women, we’re not the target audience at all so why waste my time reading it when it excludes me. But Virginia Woolf is an amazing writer, so I would recommend her. Anyways, Toni and bell are my favorite woman writers.
@@AnaisLaure Like you I really enjoy Toni’s writing especially Sula (she has such a interesting archetype as a black woman character & I lowkey sensed some sapphic vibes 🤔). I’ve only read All About Love by hooks but hopefully i’ll get to a work of hers this fall. I look forward to more of your videos ❤️
good luck with Sylvia Plath. i just finished The Bell Jar and yeah the things i heard were not lies. if it wasn’t for all the crazy racist comments and random lesbiphobic rant i would have really enjoyed her writing 🥲
