It’s kinda weird because my bike dies when I try to be in the friction zone with no gas so I have to give it gas or else it just dies

Wow this is something new to me. I was taught to t release clutch and give gas . Neve3r thought releasing clutch with no gas will make bike move. Going to try to change my way of starting off the bike. Always was afraid when in first gear releasing clutch than giving gas bike would stall or take off too quickly. Bike stalls after moving jerks and I loose balance. Still riding started at 45 years now 77 years old.

    • @Luggruff
      @Luggruff Год назад +8

Same here. Doing my lessons right now and test tomorrow. Although, I suspect that giving gas is repeated so often because.. this particular bike will stall without gas. Have a few tests were I need to take off slowly, and keep creeping, and it's been far from the easiest thing just because I have to give some gas at the start, then let off it immediately and pull in the clutch to get down to the speed I need to be in - all within the space of the first meter /: Once I am moving though, there is no issue going at low speeds with clutch only.
      Edit: Passed without any marks!

How I learned to think of it (as a beginner myself) was to think of it almost like game controls.
The clutch lever is the left stick: The further forward it goes, the more your character (the bike) wants to move, and the further back it is, the less so down to zero.
The throttle is like a sprint control: The more you engage it, the more motivation your character has. (But it's analogue.)
As for stalling, I learned the science behind it, being that the clutch decides how much energy goes to the drive mechanism vs how much the crankshaft holds onto so it can keep rotating. Assuming the bike is in-gear, if you let the clutch all the way out too quickly, then it will need to spin the drive mechanism fast enough that the cylinder(s) can complete another full cycle up to the point of the next combustion in order to keep going. This means either there isn't enough throttle (energy) to do that, meaning the crankshaft loses all it's energy before it can complete 4 full strokes of the cylinder(s), or there is enough throttle, and it leaps forward so fast that you won't go with it and it will attempt a backflip as the rear wheel attempts to overtake the rest of the bike.
If you brake with the clutch out and gears engaged, the brake literally stops the system including the crankshaft turning over, so no more combustions can take place, stopping the chain reaction.
So, add enough energy that the engine can move the bike easily as fast as it likes, then let it do so gradually so both the bike and you remain stable as you accelerate.

Started me off on a push and go automatic which was fine but then went over to a manual and I really struggled with it. Could not get the concept of of applying throttle and finding the bite like he was showing me while maintaining the revs. Came home a little disheartened and looked around on you tube and found this. The way you just showed me just makes sense! Thankyou very much. Fingers now crossed for Frinday.

Those cbt courses are terrible they are more for how to ride a motorbike out on traffic, if you want a scooter a cbt is a doddle but for manual bikes for people with absolutely no experience it should be illegal to even sit them on a manual bike without a few lessons of strict bike training, my cbt instructer actually said to me just do your cbt on a scooter, pass then get a geared bike and go out on the road and learn yourself I was shocked by that and told him he was morally bankrupt unprofessional and all about making a quick £150, I'm a lot older and wiser but saying that to a naive kid who's 17-18 is ridiculous and it should be an instant sacking.

Had a taster with my son. He taught us to never let the clutch out for learning. My son had balance issues. Cancelled CBT for now. I did struggle a bit with clutch. The Honda's i think have been abused and clutch needs adjusting as the biting point was quite far. The accelerator was wild it would flutter. This is absolutely amazing advice. Love your other vids. My first lesson on a bike was yesterday. My instructor told me to hold the revs at 3000 then release the clutch. He would tell me to give it more throttle so I did and Al while leaving the clutch slightly open. This prevented me from stalling (I only stalled once by releasing the clutch without using throttle).

This is extremely helpful. I had my first CBT course yesterday, and I chose a geared bike which was much harder than what i expected! And as you have mentioned, the instructor did say to add a little bit of acceleration whilst slowly releasing the clutch.
I never expected the acceleration to be so sensitive compared to driving a car and so when I had a go, it felt quite fast and therefore a little scary! The instructor never mentioned the bike can move with just the clutch alone (which makes sense as I drive a manual car 🙃) I decided not to go ahead on the road to complete the course and instead to do 1:1 to be safe as I did not feel in full control of the bike yet.
I will definitely request to have a go at this on my 1:1 and hopefully gain confidence 🤞🏼

I decided to get on RUclips and watch some videos on this because I got my first bike a few days ago and I've been struggling with getting clean launches. I've yet to stall it but I've been pulling off some small wheelies. I believe it is a result of giving it too much power and letting off the clutch a little too quickly. I did my CBT a few weeks ago and I was taught to give it some throttle and letting off the clutch. In theory it works because I didn't wheelie once during the CBT. We were told to give it some throttle as we release the clutch rather than slowly releasing the clutch and giving it some throttle. When it stops raining and isn't wet I'll go and practice this so I can do better. Just wanted to say that I appreciate the clear explanation and demo because I watched about six other videos before this and while they're not bad by any means they certainly weren't as clear as this video was. Cheers.

if you keep the clutch and some gas on at the same time because you are insecure about finding the balance of when to let go of the clutch and when to give enough gas can you by mistake overheat the engine so that the Coolant Reservoir begins to actually boil, that water boil over and looks like cooking pasta and burn out the engine somehow due to being a beginner keeping the gas and clutch in at the same time to many time during a half hour class for driving either a car or motorcycle?
is that likely to happen then?

If you have lower cc bikes then you have to do a slow clutch release and need to give little throttle rise..for 1st gear

Just took my first part of my MSF class today… unfortunately out of all the bikes there, the one I was on was the only one that couldn’t do what you’re doing in this video. I had to give it throttle and then slowly release the clutch and man it was rough. I probably stalled like 30 times 💀

people keep saying that stalling is embarrassing but I don't think it is. Been driving manual for ages and I still stall occasionally. Im now trying to get my M license and every video I watch, its always shaming people for stalling lol. Makes no sense, its part of learning.

  • @vali69

I find that you can literally get anything with an engine and a manual going without ever touching the throttle. When I first started learning to drive a car, on a manual duh, I already knew how it worked and all that but it was really hard to coordinate both your feet and everyone kept saying you can't get a car going just with the clutch. Well a few months after getting my license I started practicing going without touching the throttle cause I would still stall from time to time. And man, I easily learned how to do it, realized everyone was saying bs, and managed to refine my skill and I've never stalled any car since then. I still don't have a motorcycle license but I hope I'll get around to getting a2 this year. And when I do start going to lessons I'm gonna practice the clutch alone and if the instructor tells me to also use the throttle I'll just tell him a fat no.

i think it depends on the type of motor and if its in good condition or not ... mine was when I tried moving with clutch without gas and release it a few it would stall .....instructor said that I'd need to keep doing gas so it wouldn't stall....

I know it's off the main topic, but ...
I just bought my first motorcycle this past summer. Here in the US, we get the endorsement, and we're unrestricted with what motorcycle we're "allowed" to buy. Thanks to this sort of thing, it's more difficult to find smaller displacement bikes besides "just for fun" bikes like Groms.
So ... On a Ninja 125, not running it at the redline for long periods, about what is the top comfortable cruising speed for it?

Hey Goblin. Good video, great advice. So much so, I wanted to go try this out on my bike. ;) At my tick over/idle speed of 1,100rpm, I could attain a top speed of 43mph before I felt I needed to change up to second gear. ^^ I wish I had a riding instructor as informative as you are, back in the day, I would have learned so much more. ;) Looking forward to seeing your tutorial on (right hand) shoulder checks and (left hand) Life savers.

    I have a question.
Can I buy a bike before taking the CBT test and then take it to the test? Or do I have to use one of the bikes they provide?
Also, can I practice riding before taking the test? Cheers (:

I always have problems launching the bike quickly out of junctions or traffic as i'm still new. I always release the clutch way too quickly. My bike would jerk a lot and sometimes stall (which was very embarrassing lol. Thank you for this!

And to that last point my wife thinks writing those lime scooters downtown. Are the correct way to get your balance? Before. Hopping on? A motorcycle. I'm not sure if that will work for other people but it did for her. I've never seen someone learn to clutch so fast. I've been writing for about 23 years now. I know how to ride safely. Got all my dumb stuff out when I was younger. I am currently on a 2006 VFR 800 interceptor. And I believe Every single time you ride. It is a learning experience no matter what skill level you are.

I trained on a 800cc Benelli and just didn’t get on with the clutch at all. I bought a ninja 600cc and i don’t have any issues with the clutch at all…. It’s an absolute dream starting off on it. Possibly the Benelli needed some work as I’m pretty sure if I tried pulling off just using clutch with no gas…. It’d stall before it could move

I had my CBT today and I couldn’t balance by letting the clutch out fully whatsoever! I always had to use throttle (the bike was quite heavy). So, I had the clutch at biting point and applied throttle, otherwise I couldn’t keep my balance 😞 I was fine once I went up to gear 2 though! Do you have any advice for me?
