5:52 It's called Joust. In volleyball, when the ball falls in the centerline above the net, both players fight for it by pushing it over the opposing team's side. The one who loses control on the ball and let the ball fall on their side, loses. The score went to the opposing team because Daichi touched the net.
I thought it was because the ball hit the antenna. The line judge was waving the flag, showing that the antenna got hit, so since Karasuno was the last to touch the ball over, he "touched" the antenna
@@USful that was an interesting point, but in that idea it bothered me that the joust happened quite far away from the antenna, so I went back and checked it. You can see when going frame by frame that the ball didn't touch the net while during joust, but the antenna started moving when sawamura pushed the ball over, which means his forearms touched the net during the push. An interesting theory nonetheless.
@@USful The line judge who pointed their flag, was indicating where the ball landed and indicating Karasuno scored. The call after was because one of the refs noticed Daichi had touched the net. EDIT: I just rewatched, I was thinking of something else. Line judge definitely pointed to antenna.
The ball 100% touched the net. You can tell by the fact that when Daichi pushed the ball over, the net itself didn't move from being touched, but it was specifically the antenna that moved. That, and also as USful said, the line judge was pointing up towards the antenna while waving the flag.
@@bLuGhOsT_ I watched that part frame by frame and the net did move, even though the ball was above it. Also it's kinda impossible only for the antenna to move since both antenna and net are flexible, they move easily, and are connected so when one moves the other moves as well
I never seen someone hate Aone at the start like that hahaha, the pointing thing they explain when happened, he has this habit to point to the one that is the ace of the other team, so is like he's saying to his team " he is the one we have to stop "

I was really happy to see that Ikejiri made your mvp this episode. He really is a good kid, and I love that he was still willing to support his old friend, even immediately after just getting knocked out of the tournament.
- Other teams/players/coaches tend to already know about some things because they probably do it too. - Contrary to what other people say about this episode, this episode made me cry for the first time watching this show. - That's the great thing about Haikyuu. It doesn't only focus on Karasuno but on the other teams as well. So good! - I think this episode more like shows us the regrets, emotions that athletes have or get when they lose. - I love Noya so much!! Thank you Ange and Carlie!
yes, this episode always gets me misty eyed. it's an important episode to have for a show like this! i think it really helps the viewers feel more empathy for the rival/losing teams, because as expected we all route for the main characters and their team. but this episode really puts into perspective how the opposing team is feeling the entire time too, and how much they want to win, as much as our team, and how hard they've worked too. such a lovely episode, so much more emotional than you'd expect from a sports anime, but just another reason why Haikyu stands apart from all the others of its genre ♥
The tears of regret really starts to sink in when remembering the exam I took that will determine my career and regret that I didn't do my absolute best preparing for that one.
Best episode of the first season I'd argue, it just hit so many motions and shows you that this isn't a show about people waiting it's also about people realizing that not everyone can do what they can do
one of my fave episodes of the season. we're reminded there's only one winner...and many losers. So you gotta put in the work and learn from your mistakes in order to be that One winner. The scene where Karasuno was showing how they take their opponent seriously. Chills. Yes, a great compliment. Literally an insult to your opponent if you don't take them seriously 'cause why you playing this sport in the first place?? I experienced competing with a team who didn't take us seriously and we won. But never felt great. Like we didn't deserve to win. Because we wanted to beat someone who show their full potential, be challenging, not a team who's giving their 20%. This anime is slice of life for a reason. So many real life lessons to relate to 💖 That's why you can't completely hate any of the players or teams because the series just makes you understand them 🥲
14:38 When I was playing competitively in university and amateur leagues, libero captains (team or floor captains) were somewhat of an anomaly. Volleyball governing bodies have different rules regarding this issue. Because of the nature of a libero's position (constantly rotating on and off the court), it can create conflicts with a captain's responsibilities, such as calling timeouts, challenging referee calls, and handling the coin toss. I've never been a captain myself, so feel free to add more if you're familiar with their duties. That's why captain roles are typically given to positions like setters (Kageyama) or wing spikers (Tanaka, Daichi, Asahi) who are mainstays on the court. I'm not well-versed in the rules and have only played in amateur circuits, but this is what I've heard and been told.
From what I understand, liberos are forbidden from being captains under FIVB rules (which is what Japan plays by), but middle blockers are not. We do see the occasional middle blocker as captain in Haikyuu- Kuroo, for instance, as well as (SPOILER ALERT) Yamaguchi, unless they switched him to wing spiker the next year (which I suspect they didn't- my belief is that he's like Kita, an off-court captain, making Kageyama the court captain and the one who makes decisions in the moment), and Shugo Meian, the captain for the MSBY Black Jackals.
The "I understand female writers better and you the male writers" theory is funny, because Furudate's gender is unkown 🤣 Also as many others said, this is one of my fave episodes. It really reminds you that (nearly) everyone plays to win, and that all the characters here are just kids at the end of the day, who love volleyball
I am sure that the mangaka, Mr. Furudate is a real vollyball fan. He loves not only winners, but also losers, viewers, and who try to expand volleyball. That is why Haikyuu is called "shonen manga without villains".
Ange need to chill a little bit...he is judging characters way too early..he is not thinking about other teams that they are here to win too...he is fixed on karasuno.
I don't know if it's my favorite episode but definitely it was the first episode that made me cry the first time I saw Haikyuu, it's a really exciting episode and I could feel the sadness and anger of each team that lost. An episode that represents a lot of what Haikyuu is about but not many people remember it.
He is judging characters without context...he just want karasuno to win everything...he is not thinking about other teams that they are here to win too...he is becoming single minded.

Your hands are allowed to go over the net and you can touch the ball while someone else is touching it (jousting). The only time when blockers are NOT allowed to touch a ball would be when the setter is setting; otherwise blockers can just prevent the set from ever happening. Daichi touched the net during his block, which is a faul and automatic point to the opponent.
