- From Jack Lee's Greatest Hits Vol. 1 (Maiden America). As witnessed on RUclips, Lee performed it with his band The Nerves as early as June 1977. Lee also wrote Hanging On The Telephone, famously covered by Blondie.
Come Back And Stay became a big European smash for Paul Young in 1983.

Jack passed away in May of colon cancer. He lived off the royalties from this and Telephone, for the rest of his life.
Two brilliant songs.
Can't believe I'd never heard of this guy until a few days ago. I'm glad he lived off his royalties ... he deserved them. I prefer this version than Paul Young's. No harm to Young.
Jack Lee wrote two other tracks on the No Parlez album so will have done nicely from those too.
No way I'm embarrassed to admit I didn't know Jack Lee wrote this great song . Love this original version.
I'll do you one better: who is Jack Lee? Never heard of him
You’re not the only one… my mind is now blown! Also “Hanging on the Telephone”. He’s officially my new deep dive.
Hall and oats the original
Either did I. Helluva writer.
@@XmanSully Jack was in a trio called The Nerves that lasted for all of one EP. The other two guys were more successful. Drummer Paul Collins formed The Beat (the reason that the other The Beat are known as the The English Beat), and bassist Peter Case formed The Plimsouls, the band that did "A Million Miles Away".
Honestly just found out paul Young's version was a cover
Im really shocked right now
Me too , just now , i was trying to find out of Pino Palladino played bass for Young's version , and then this shit happened
Me too, and this really kicks arse! Excellent!
love of the common people is also a cover
Hanging On The Telephone by Blondie is also a cover of The Nerves (Jack Lee’s Band that played Come Back And Stay)
3 of Jack's songs ended up on No Parlez. Paul really liked Jack.
If you guys prefer Paul Young's version, go listen and get outta here 😂
Love Paul young's version. But this one is raw real and better
My thoughts too. Paul Young's vocal is amazing, but I was never a fan of that eighties backing, even then. This version could have been recorded well after his and still sounds fresh.
The best version, you can't beat a Nerve performing a Nerves-eque song
Been listening to Paul Young's cover for 40 years and this is the first time I've listened to the original. Love it!
Same here
Rest In Peace Jack Lee.
This version....that'll be the original.....has big balls. Love the way Jack Lee says 'This time' here...amongst other things of course - it's great...
He also sang any earlier version of this song when with The Nerves, a bit rougher and not complete but worth a listen
The airy sound and female vocalists bring a lot to Paul's version.
yes i was actually just trying to find out who that female was there's not much info on the wikapedia page
Nah, Paul's is too squeaky clean and subdued.
This actually has grit and energy, rock soul if you will.
Way better than Paul Young’s
this fella certainly knows how to write a tune with a sense of urgency!
I love more the original, the cover is nice aswell, but this still my favourite
Paul was a master of covering a song and making it a bigger hit than the original version.
Oh man, you had me for a second, thought you meant Westerberg.
I agree, his biggest hit Everytime you go away was also a cover from Hall and Oates
@@juliusnepos6013 I think 'Everything must change' is one of his best. and he wrote it.
@@thebassbat7882 You're right! Did you write a good song, did you record it but it wasn't successful? Ask Paul Young to cover it and it will be a guaranteed success. And with the royalties you get rich too
Jack Lee was also in The Nerves, they made a song called Haning on the Telephone which was later covered by Blondie. Sorry Jack that's two strikes.
I was today years old when I found out Paul Young's version was a cover. I've always loved that song, and now knowing it's a cover, surprises me.
Sorry Jack but Paul young made a classic of your song I prefer his cover.
Wow! I really like this song
The things i learn at 1:30 AM...
Never knew this was not an original song by Paul Young.
I like this version!
This is the first time I have heard Jack Lee's version. It has a rawness that I like. I still like Paul Young's better but this is really good also.
Both are good. Very different styles for sure and they conjure VERY DIFFERENT feelings. I too prefer Paul Young's version, however, because it's the one I grew up with and it's seared in my memory.
I prefer Jack Lee's version, but Paul Young's live Version (Live Aid, 1985) is very cool! I just found out JL's version some months ago, I knew PY's cover since I was a lil' boy, but I kinda forgot it. ;) My brain was reactivated, when I saw Live Aid in full length.
MUCH better than Paul Youngs cover. Listen to the guitar riff!
this version is very nervelike
Wow,..I dd not know this was the original. It's faster and more raw,but I really do like it.
I'm a huge Paul Young fan and I thought this was his song.
The things we learnm,huh?
hey this is the real tobacco!
No kidding, no adult contemporary vibes here!
Better than Paul Young!
I definitely like the guitar riffs and overall "rawness" of this version. However Paul's version surpasses it in terms of lyrical intensity in my opinion.
Actually, Jack's VERY original version, live with the Nerves, was the one that really rocked! Of course, rock was assassinated in the early '70s, when Britain's rockers, genuine beneath the glam and glitter, were forbidden entry, at least to the airwaves, and "new wave" rockers were stifled on their home soil as the '80s neared. Didja ever wonder why so many records were pressed, released, and tossed in the cutout dumpsters? Of course, if I were to voice my suspicions, I'd be a "conspiracy theorist," wouldn't I?
i like both versions
Thought the original was HALL & OATS
Does anyone else hear Arctic Monkeys from the early days?
Yes, I thought I was crazy lol. I'm glad you hear it too. Even the album cover looks like something I could easily see Alex Turner posing for lol
Unfortunately yes.
way better than the other one, which is just random synthetic trash simply for the sake of sounding synthetic
I heard Paul Young's cover first and I still like it, but it sure sounds better raw.
Indeed, two brilliant songs. Really brilliant. And enough to be classified as a genius.
RIP Jack.
Wow. Why didn’t this version make its mark? So much better.
First time hearing this version, I love Paul Young's one too but have taken an instant shine to this original. They first iterations of songs always sound truer to me even if they're usually rawer too.
The chorus is such an amazing hook, this guy is one hell of a songwriter.
Interesting how you can see that this and Hanging On The Telephone have the same style.
Masterpiece.
Though I like Paul’s version better, this guy is a really talented songwriter. He wrote Blondie’s Hanging OnThe Telephone as well.
Nope....Hanging on the telephone is a song from his first band The Nerves...then, Debbie covered...
@@belenginebra4467 But is was written by Lee,
Timeless
Just discovered today that this was the original version. Though it was a song written by Paul Young
Clearly Jack didn't have as much passion for the song as Paul young did. This sounded rushed.
Paul Young has lived off nothing but covers
Je découvre l'original qui a inspiré Paul Young :)
The nerves did it first live, much faster and nearly as good as this
Jack Lee was a member of The Nerves
This has some Farcry 5 energy that I can't explain. Like it syncs with your "badguy when i need to be" vibe
Je préfère la version de Jack ! Elle est plus vivante et ne sent pas le fric....
C'est plus une version Rock heureusement
Paul était un produit marketing à l'époque. Son look,le son, les apparitions a la TV appartenaient au Gafa
du disque.
Musicalement
Only just learned he wrote this, and Blondies Hanging on the Telephone
Bro's kinda goated tbh
Esta es mil veces mejor que ninguna
Great!
Sounds like a smiths/ Morrisey track
No comentar escucha o resucita the greatesh hit
JACK LEE
Prefer Paul Young's version as well!
Great, since Jack Lee wrote song
Amazing
Paul Young's version is the best with his extended remix
Jack wrote the song; jus thought you might want to know that.
sounds like rockabilly
Estela Plateada
holy cow..
maybe, it is the original, but Paul Young´s version is much better
The Nerves did a GODLIKE version of this when I saw them in 77!
I would of loved to see the nerves and i knew i heard this on some live recordings of the nerves i heard somewhere
lucky, I've heard one live recording of them doing it, I wish they did a proper studio recording
Yep! The Pagans opened, you guys had the suits, and you kicked massive amounts of ass. True rock and roll!
Heard this on the radio abd thought it was a new song. Searched it up and got Paul Young and really didn't like it...then found this and was like, YES! This is the one :)
best version ever..
interesting and different from Paul Young for sure it does not make me feel as much as P.Y. version, but who knows maybe if I had heard it first.
It sounds too punk for the lyrics.
I would never say, I like this song, if Poul's version didn't exist. Without that magic synth sound of 80' it's just boring.
I only came to see what hick would say "Best Version Ever" ..... lmao not surprised
Your whole channel screams hick 😂 The Punisher logo but.....
The goof that bought this song off Jack Lee
@@Philly253 it's not a Punisher logo dumbass... just a regular skull .
I like this. There is something haunting about Paul Young's version though. Check out the song "Torn" in the 90's for a comparison. (in reverse) one is peppy one is haunting.
James Morrisons version was more like this that Paul Youngs, very good cover
Add the bells and the girls and this one is my new favourite.
First time hearing this version, though I've heard the other many times. Both are great, though this isn't the one I prefer. It's probably not too good to compare the two though since both are performed at different paces with completely different styles. They both work well on their own though.
Young has perfected this song
Paul Young's cover is better...
No. Never. Jack Lee's original is far better
I PREFER PAUL YOUNG BUT IT IS VERY VERY GOOD
Whoa! This rocks my socks. As I'm an indie rock enthusiast, I actually prefer this original version to Paul Young's cheesy one with 23487 layers of synth(pad)s underneath and his whiny lamenting.
pianoman74 Piss off. He doesn’t sound whiny.
The Paul Young version is much more interesting to listen to. I got a little bored with this version toward the end but still a great song. Paul made it one of the great songs of the eighties.
His version sucks. I like Paul Young's better.
Michael Tracy, it's not Jack Lee's "version", his is the original! :)
Jack actually wrote the song before Paul Young made a version. That happens a lot in the business.
Don’t let awareness get in your way
both versions are good ...i seek pole shift survival group
