@@Cate7451 Unfortunately, the insects in my backyard destroyed my plant once it starting getting tall and forming buds. But I plan to restart another tomato or pepper plant soon.
kshel104 , peppers have many insect enemies. Tomato plants are difficult too. I don't like home grown tomatoes so much but if you do everything takes practice. Herbs and lettuce are easier and anything grown improves your food. 🌻💐💓🌸💗

I have been using big galvanized wash tubs and big 30 gallon cans for about 5 years and I love them! I do my cukes, tomatoes, peppers, green beans and tomatillos, and even pumpkins in them.

Lot of people asked about container size. This is perfect for great growth, less watering and an overall good experience.
I have one of those containers but I planted 3 cabbages in mine. They’re heading up but It sounds like I might have over-planted? They look very big and healthy so far. 🤞 I also planted carrots early in a 5 gallon container and I’m pulling them already! Container gardening is a wonderful way to plant more food if you only have a small garden or none at all! Thanks for all the tips!
3 might be tight but harvest one smaller and use outer leaves. But you are going to get some nice cabbage. Glad to help.

Thanks for a great video, Gary. Clear, simple, so easy, it is inspiring! Good-looking containers, and good point about watering issues. I've been using fabric pots - cheaper, effective, light - love them BUT this past fall, squirrels also loved them. They chewed off large strips to line their nests. Ugh! Steel is more expensive, but perhaps a bargain in the end with these rascals around.
Look around yard sales and thrift stores, even craigs list. You can find them cheaper. Crazy squirrels!

Gary, with the summer sun and heat, at what point does soil temperature become a concern when growing in containers? Had you previously tracked soil temps vs plant production? -Bob...
I live just south of Seattle. Most people say that it's hard to grow peppers around here, however I've had pretty good success with peppers. But then I realized it was because I was growing them in pots and that allowed the roots to be warmer like there used to be able to have a successful harvest. I had about 30 sweet red peppers from one plant last summer. And this was in a number 5 pot which I believe is about 3.25 gallons.
Gary, what do you think about crushing up antacid tablets and using them as a calcium source? I have seen other youtubers recommend this and wonder if you have tried it...
Hi Gary! I'm a beginner (container) gardener and I love your video's! This is my second year of trying to grow vegetables and herbs on my large roofterrace. I have no choice but to grow in containers. Last year I managed to grow so much tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers that I didn't know what to do with them, even though it was my first year of trying! Mainly because of gardening channels like yours and CaliKim's; love you both! I also have a question: in this video you mentioned again that tomatoes need a lot of calcium. Where I live in the Netherlands the tapwater is quite hard (it has a lot of calcium or lime in it. I don't know how to correctly explain that in english). Can that also be helpful for the tomato plants calcium needs?

Hi Gary. Great video and I always enjoy reading your replies to the comments afterwards.
Here is a QUESTION that wasn’t covered and I haven’t ever seen it mentioned or referenced. First, the reason for the question. This year I had my soil tested. I was curious to see how good or bad it was and to see if I could save myself some money on fertilizer if I didn’t need any. So, I tested the soil in my raised beds, the compost pile and the tree pile (it’s a place where I dump my buckets at the end of the year and then in the spring I use that soil with my compost in making up new buckets). In short, all the major and micro nutrients were off the charts except nitrogen. I am a bit deficient in this. I was told not to add anymore fertilizer for a couple of years.
So here is the question, when it comes to adding the nitrogen can I use just the fish and or worm tea as a foliage spray every 10 to 14 days or should I use the urea or blood meal or should I use both the in soil nitrogen and the foliage nitrogen sprays?
dropout0110 thank you for your response. The other question I had was would I use the foliar spray along with the in ground nitrogen, in this case, the feather?

What store do you get your shredded bark from or what brand is it? I saw some in Ace and Home Depot but wasn’t sure if they were safe (chemical free) for vegetable gardens. We’re also in Maryland.

This video was really helpful. I have a container garden (year 1) as my garden space is small. I have similar pot sizes and grow bags. The pots I have sweet corn, raspberries and strawberries. I am struggling with cucumbers in containers, so any advice would be great. Toms in grow bags are growing well. But I was also interested in how you grow peppers, I will try that.

Gary, I finally got all my transplants potted outside. After a few days I see my tomato plants are getting a light beige-silver color on the leaves but not on the veins. What is this? I’m using 50/50 garden soil and peat. Put a little lime in the bottom and I gave them some worm tea the day after planting. Thanks for all your great videos!
Not sure but this is where I give them fish emulsion for the nitrogen and just sit back and watch for a week. They can take time to adjust to the outdoors.

We are going to use the blue food grade barrels for ours!
Only difference between food grade and non, is the mold release agent used in MFG. It will wear off rather fast; just give a good scrubbing. Buying *new* food grade just means its ready for food straight away. (Spent a couple years working in a plastics factory)
Gary, do some research and a video on reusing emptied “cattle mineral lick tubs”. They are just a bit larger than that 17g tub and either Free or very cheap!! I get mine from a local farmer for $4 each.

My container plants are in plastic, mainly for the low cost and the lighter weight of moving them around. I love the look of terra cotta but with my Southern exposure balcony any moisture in the soil gets sucked out by the terra cotta when it's really hot. I'd also be interested, as Wran Ther mentioned below, to see if the metal containers overheat the roots.

For the deeply planted tomato you show... would there be any benefit from using one of your bottomless plantpots, possibly even inverted, right in the centre of the tub to hold up some soil like a collar so the vertical roots have more room below them?

Thanks! You know what that is a really good idea. I never thought of it but for peppers and tomatoes you could do that. Gives you more cushion around watering. That might make it into the next video.
Hi again, I forgot to ask my other QUESTION. I noticed you don’t wet your soil before adding in your plants in the planters whether they are 5 gallon or the larger ones in this video. I’ve noticed that the bottom half of the containers stay dry. Will that bottom half eventually get moist?
I was wondering the same. I thought Gary mentioned that you do need to wet the soil before putting in the fertilizer, but since we didn't see that step in the video, I wasn't sure. Have you found the answer to that, Linda?
k24ld wouldn't you water it a bit as you fill? That's what I do especially if it's dry.

We call it a foot tub in Carolina,we would never intentionally make a hole in a foot tub but I do plant in several old tubs that srang a leak.

Galvanized coated..have yours rusted at all on you? Any concerns about that?
This will be a complete newbie question but...I've put Jalapeno and Habanero plants in. The Jalapeno have gotten yellow leaves but are putting out some peppers (small though they are at this point). I've fertilized with miracle gro organics as well as I've put 511 fish fertilizer as well. What else can I do to stop the yellowing of the leaves? BTW, I love your channel. Been so helpful.
What do you think about using grass clippings as mulch?

I have several videos under refreshing container soil but I keep it in the container and just add organic fert. After 2 or 3 years, I dump it out and refresh it with peat moss, compost (if I have it) and organic fertilizer. Nothing fancy. I use that to refill and end up with more each year.

So how often do you water? Does the soil need to be consistently moist or do I let it dry then water ? I'm planting tomatoes, carrots, chives, and potatoes. All container gardening.
Varies greatly based on plant size and temps. But you want just consistent moisture. You have to increase frequency as they got larger and it gets hotter.

Gary, when purchasing tomato plants, how can you tell if it is 'determinate' or 'indeterminate' plant? I have looked on the little labels that usually accompany the plant, but I have not see anything that specifies which. Any help is appreciated. Thx.
Only if it is labelled or by looking up variety for seeds on internet. The seed shop catalogs usually tell you in the description.

Nice containers, but do they rust and I wonder if the roots would heat up too much due to the metal. Will be interesting to see how they do.
So it reflects away some heat so that wont be an issue. And they just dont rust quickly. Should last quite a long time. Ill have them there over the years. But if you dont like the metal, plastic is fine. That shape for stability and about 17 gallons is what I recommend for larger garden plants.
Is there a benefit of placing the pots on palettes instead of directly on the ground?
Not really. I like the look and wanted to reuse the shipping pallets. It defines the space but I will also being putting the same containers on the other side just on the mulch.
I have an idea for your recording. Invest in a GoPro (or other similar action cam that is compatible with GoPro mounts). Then you can wear one of the forehead and/or chest mounts and you will have 2 hands free to do stuff and make your videos a bit less awkward when doing demonstrations.
When you poke holes in the bottom, do these galvanized tubs rust over time?
They will start to rust. You could spray them.

I have grown some herbs in containers and I have used container mix and so far I did not see any loss of soil. So i will have growing volume of soil when I make next container mix next year with new peet poss and compost?

As many as you want. Then thin it out later. Geez!

So that is hard to answer cause compost varies. If it is really well broken down and top notch stuff no. But 1/3 compost, 1/3 peat 1/3 earth is a really good base. No dont add manure. Typically it is never fully broken down and robs nitrogen from you plants (after it is done breaking down it stops taking nitrogen and gives back). It is fine to put some handfuls on top of the soil. Just dont mix it through the whole mix.

Definitely not
I don’t have much sun where I would like to plant tomatoes. Can I plant 3 or 2 tomatoes if the container is long? or do they need to be all separate for each other?
They need 6-8 hours. Each tomato should have at least 5 gallons of growing space. I would also grow determinate varieties

I am container gardening and may have overdone it. I purchased five 25. Gallon grow bags. I plan on using a couple to grow russet potatoes. Can I use one for squash and one for zucchini? .
Two in 1 container might be much. But definitely 1 works.

Is it too late to start tomato and other veggies from seeds? Do i need to start from grow lights for tomatoes? We do get plenty of sun this time of year.
Start Determinate tomatoes now and you can start just about anything else. Peppers or eggplant might be tough. You can start from seed in the ground. Or outside in cups.

Gary: How many plants one can grow in one of these tubs? 4 tomato plants too many? Does it make difference determine or undetermined tomatto can be grown in this tub? It is not very high, but I like large surface area.
Thats to many. 2 determinate varieties in container. And only 1 indeterminate in a container. You do have to manage watering as roots fill it up. Holes in bottom. Give roots a place to go to if you have them on the ground.

I have 10 gallon fabric pots. How many peppers can I plant in them? And how often should I give the water soluble fertilizer?
At least 2 if not 3, depends on how often you can maintain watering. Feed them 1x a month. They do well with less. If they look yellow or stalled, 2x a month.

I have store bought mix, Miracle grow, and then ordered coconut coir. Can I mix this up to make a good mixture for my tomatoes and peppers, or do I also need peat moss. Also I have been saving egg shells which I pulverized can I use that instead of garden lime to prevent blossom end rot, or should I use both.
You can mix that. Coir replaces peat and vice versa. You can use pulverized shell too.

How long do you think that those specific tubs you bought will hold up? I ask because I'm considering putting a blueberry plant in them and hope that it will live for a decade in there. Also I wonder if having acidic soil for the blueberry would tend to rot that metal faster?

QUESTION: what is the reasoning for removing the flowers?
I just want the plant to focus on leaf and root growth at this point. I want energy to go to a bigger plant before fruit development.

so width is more important than height of pots? Not sure how deep tomato and pepper roots go? They are seasonal so it can't be more than a feet?
Oh the can go really deep but also send out surface roots. Depth helps with moisture management

Fabric pots? They work effectively but I like sitting them on the ground/earth so roots grow into it.
Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) sounds like a plan but I think at my house the problem would be tree roots growing up into them.

Thanks Gary, have a question. Previous videos recommended potting mix to include perlite for drainage. Is it a new thought, through your experience, that water retention is more beneficial to plants , therefore the exclusion of perlite.
Would be grateful for your clarification, as I can only grow in containers. Exclusion of perlite will save me alot of money. Thanks so much.
You can use either and add what you wish. This is just simple mix that works and is cost effective. You can add what every you like to it. Drainage will happen easily with it being 50% peat or coir. Good luck.

Why are we removing the flower to transplant? And would I do that with the snap pea plant I'm about to transplant?
Not for peas. For bigger plants like tomatoes, peppers, I want the plant to grow and not focus of fruit right away.

Is it ok for me to use s mix of peat moss and premiuum topsoil?
QUESTION: would you recommend using a anti-rust solution on the bucket question inside or out only? Both? Or not at all?
I am not going to add it. As the galvanizing helps prevent rust. You can paint the outsides and color though.
I have a couple of galvanized pots too. I painted the drainage holes hoping to reduce the chance of rust.
Plastic containers it is said are only good for a couple years. What about the resin plastic pots that are between 16 gal to 24 gal and advertised as weather resistant?
Its hard to say but you are looking for UV protection. That is what matters.

How about purchased top soil, peat moss, mushroom compost and manure as a base?
I already have these items.
First 3 are great. If your manure is NOT 100% composted down it will take nitrogen for the soil until it is done. I would sprinkle the manure on top and not mix it through.

Pepper tend to do well in heat especially in a rainy zone of the East coast.
These are galvanized, so what about zinc toxicity?
Not worried. That is overblown. Plants just dont suck up the elements like that. They would die before the levels would even be a concern to us.

I notice my plants in galvanized tub grow faster and produced more compared to the ones in grow bags. I dont know why? Everything was done the same.
Sometimes it is more soil or the temperature of the soil in the container.

That garden lime has too much magnesium in it. A better buffer mix is 5 cups calcium carbonate to 1 cup Garden Lime to buffer one bale (3cf) of peat.
I love Gary's channel, but I am so confused. In previous videos, he showed a Black Kow bag of manure, as well as topsoil and peat moss for the potting mix recipe. In this video he doesn't mention the Black Kow and also commented below not to use it. I know everyone uses their own way of making a container mix, but I want to start off right. This is one of the reasons why I use the Dutch Bucket hydroponic setup. Soil based gardening is confusing to me. The questions I have are, should I use Black Kow, and if not what type of compost should I buy to use for container gardening? Also, I don't see any mention of perlite or vermiculite. Are they not beneficial for water retention?
So Black Kow is a brand. They do a good job of fully composting their manures down. But when you buy bags of other stuff that say manure, sometimes they are not broken down. So you have to know the product. The bottom line is to introduce manure that is fully composted into your mixes or they will compete for nitrogen. Any manure or compost you add should be fully composted. SO you can also make 1000 different mixes. I found at least 50% peat and what every you want afterwards is fine. To keep in simple. The peat holds the water. Perlite is not needed. Vermiculite is great for seed starting mixes. Good luck.
