I saved my bell pepper plants over the winter, and I just picked my last one from last year in April! They are already blooming and ready to start a new crop!
@sherrymckee130 I put the pots under my covered patio. The temps got into the low teens for about a week. Our patio is U shaped and covered, so my husband draped a tarp over the opening and put a heater in there. They were planted Spring of 23, and they look rough, but are starting to sprout new growth and are already blooming!
I'm in Houston and use grow bags for almost everything right now. I have had horrible luck with the black bags becoming mini ovens, but tan bags are available in most sizes. They cost a few cents more each but it isn't a large amount. The tan ones are much, much better in terms of not drawing in so much heat and my water needs have been very reasonable.
Good tip! I'm in Houston also. Someone gave me a couple of grow bags and I've been wondering what to plant in them since I grow most things in the ground. We just got a green house for our ornamental plants. I might spray paint the exterior of my grow bags and try peppers in them.
Im from New Mexico. Im starting around 10 different pepper plants tomorrow in the 5 gallon buckets. Wish me luck by giving this comment a like please🫡🙏
These are great tips. The only thing I didn't know about was the fertilizer. My most high yielding pepper plants are in 3 gallon pots but some are smaller but still grow fruit. As a first time gardener I am most proud of these guys.
We have a mushroom farm about 20 minute from where we live, they dispose of a lot of mushroom compost and twice a year i will fill the bed of my truck with their compost they give away for free, Tomatoes and Peppers grow like mad in this compost and best part, its free
I'm in Ottawa too and have had amazing luck with my container peppers and tomatoes this summer! After years of unsuccessful attempts to grow them straight from the ground, it's such a great feeling to see our plants flourishing on the porch in their pots. Should have done this yesrs ago lmao 🤣
I learned the hard way that topping puts your peppers back a month or two. I do remove the bottom leaves, they tend to grow upwards after I do. Btw, there's videos on RUclips of fireworks for dogs to get them adjusted to it and there's Thunderstorm videos. I did that with my dog and she would sleep through thunderstorms and fireworks. I did the same thing with babies crying and she had no reactions to loud baby crying either.

The Millennial Gardener I just found you and LOVE you! I was a young child in elementary school Garden Club and now retired and getting back to it! I've watched a lot of videos but you have been the one I am able to understand the best. You are very thorough and have been SO very helpful. Just watched your pepper & tomatoes vids. Learned a lot and ran right outside to prune the tomatoe. ALMOST was going to prune the pepper plant but decided not to after listening to your reasons no need to. I also made a list of fertilizer products I def need. Again - thank you! SO glad I found you! And I told my daughter in law to check you out as she is just getting into gardening. Bye for now from Northern Michigan
I found myself using about 8 gallons of water for all my pepper and other vegetable plants, so I switched to a hose-end sprayer to apply the solution. Its much easier. Here in west central Florida, with the extra heat, I water 3 times a week on an automated water system and then once a week, I apply the fertilizer solution over the bone meal and granular fertilizer, but I have to be careful with too much fertilizer due to the heat, so I usually prep the plants in good soil with bone meal added, then just use the liquid application every two weeks. My over-wintered peppers usually produce in Spring, then the newer plants come on, so it's like succession sowing.
You can get dale something called a "thunder vest or lighting vest" I forget which one it's called but you put it on your pup when it's gonna storm and it's comforting to the dog. My daughter had to dog sit a friend's dog for a couple weeks that got really scared during storms, she would tear up her crate and bust out. The dog was a pittie that was terrified of storms. I told her to get this vest for the dog and it worked. She would sleep right through the storm or just lay down . The owner was so happy I figured out what to do about the nervous energy the dog got during storms because she had once had to replace a bathroom door the dog chewed through while she was out running errands. Also I think it has something to do with the electricity in the air or the barometric pressure dropping.
I wouldn't fertilize them quite as much. Last year, I followed your tips and found that I got lots of leaves but fewer fruit on my peppers in grow bags. This year, I'm adding granular fert about once in _6 weeks,_ and liquid fert about monthly. Stockier plants, greater yield.
Hey... long time lurker first time commenting... I live in a side by side duplex with very little yard, and what yard I have is very shaded by big trees. We've been growing in grow bags and containers for a couple years now, placing them in the areas that get the most sun, like our driveway. This is the first year we've tried peppers and they are doing AMAZING! We live in Nova Scotia, Canada and have been having torrential rain followed by scortching sun, so those in ground gardens of my neighbours are not faring as well as our container/grow bag garden. Thanks so much for all your information, I've learned so much that I've put into practice from watching your channel. I appreciate your knowledge. :)
One of my Yorkies is so afraid of storms! Up all night sometimes! Going to try over winter some pepper plants this year! We plant 200 plants out side for selling! Thanks for the good videos! Happy Planting !
I had a friend whose dog was terribly afraid of the sounds from 4th of July. His vet gave him doggy valium. Two days preceding, the day of, and the day after. It helped him a lot.
1:07, I definitely had fun watering my bell peppers twice a day during the summer last year. Even watering them a lot in the morning just wasn't enough to keep their leaves from drooping later on in the afternoon. I just heard you mentioning the pepper plants are perennials; I realized that when my three peppers were still producing into January until I had a light freeze that destroyed them. They would otherwise still be alive right now.
I'm a new subscriber and have found your tips and tricks to be very helpful. I am growing just a tomato plant in a pot(3 Gal) and basically was just watering it with an initial fertilizer. It was definitely riding the struggle bus. Watched your video on tomatoes, trimmed them up, tapped the flowers, added more fertilizer and wha la. It shot up and is now producing fruit and more fruit starting to show. Thank you! Think I want to do peppers and cucumbers now as well 😀
My dog is afraid of thunder and fireworks as well I live in south Florida so thunder a lot😂 we triedcbd gummies it just put her to sleep. I got a Thunder Shirt for my Aussie for storms and fireworks. When she got stressed, she would pace around with a toy in her mouth. That was a clue to get the vest. The vest helped her a lot. She was anxious but I could still take her out for a walk.
It does make a significant difference. Dale now wants it during storms. If it starts thundering and I get it out, he walks over to get it put on, so it clearly helps him.
You and James Prigioni are my favs. Peppers, Tomatoes and green beans are my major crops. Then salad garden and herbs. I use Greenstalks for all except my tomatoes.
I love watching your videos. I had a pepper plant growing for 3 years in my hydroponics bay. I finally replaced it with lettuce but dried and kept the seeds and now they are all growing outside. I will be bringing a few of them in for winter.
Bell peppers are one of the more difficult peppers to grow. They have some of the longest ripening times and lowest yields because of their large size. I don't grow them anymore, because I find the bell peppers in the store acceptable quality and I grow more prolific varieties that I can't get anywhere else. Giant Marconi is a pretty good substitute for stuffing, and I love the sweet banana peppers in salads.
I have my first bell pepper plant this year and it is super slow. I will try bringing inside to get the peppers to ripen when it cools down in a few months.
@@TheMillennialGardenerOh geez….. I didn’t realize that; with the cost of peppers I was hoping to grow a bunch of big peppers but now I think I’ll go buy a banana pepper and plant the seeds;
I have a Owari Satsuma Dwarf Mandarin Tree on the way thanks to your great advice. I'm going to plant it in a grow bag. I live in the Pacific Northwest and am looking forward to enjoying some sweet mandarins.
This is a top top video for pepper tips 👍🏻 no wonder my peppers don’t grow as fast as I want them to. Thankyou again, you are the king of container gardening ❤
Thank you for that information because I thought my pepper plants stop growing doing the winter. Now I know. Right now I'm just waiting for my new seeds to come in. Thanks again again
Awesome information. Love your style of delivery! Just started to garden this year. I put 3 chili pepper plants in 2G containers. They haven't been growing as much as I'd hope. I think I made the container mix TOO DENSE. The water gets logged in even though the drainage is OKAY but I think they'd prefer something airy. I also cut off two lower branches to propagate and they're not doing so hot. I think I should have left them on the main plant! My tomatoes are doing fair however! I will learn for next year. Thank you for the videos!
It's been a strange year, for western PA and much of the north east, thanks to the wildfires in Canada. We spent much of June and early July with air quality warnings and a persistent haze. On the down side, many of my "hot weather plants" have been slow growing, but on the plus side, my "cold weather crops" are still going strong. I'd been giving my containered peppers the water soluble fertilizer, but hadn't thought about the solids. I'll start doing that more frequently.
I learned quite by accident that peppers grow so profusely in a 3 gallon bucket was so glad to discover this had more but present ever and I overwinter them. Thank you for all your work.
Peppers do fantastically well in containers. I'm guessing the stress of the container forces fruiting. I'm growing a cherry pepper in a pot that's 4 years old. It fruits for me all winter long.
You can also grow them under grow lights in the winter, indoors. I lower the Nitrogen fertilizer once they start flowering and increase the Phosphorus. I've had mine for over 3 years and every two years, in the spring, I change out the soil and trim the roots. They seem to love it.
Thank you Anthony, very helpful advice as l am currently growing indoor Cayenne and Carolina Reapers for the first time. I wanted to let them grow the way they like and you have helped to confirm my instincts. I will add that l intend to powder the Reapers into empty supplementary capsules because l am a little concerned about eating them. Thank you for sharing and best wishes. Jason from Melbourne Australia. PS. I hope l have your name correct. My apologies if l don't.
Very informative. Thank you. I’m growing a variety of peppers in 3 gal cloth pots and they are doing just fine. I will definitely take your tips and apply them throughout the growing season.
I agree with you that peppers are perennial ,I planted my peppers in containers they are still alive and they gave me fruits every year. Thank you , I love the way you do your video very informative and very detailed.
Very timely video. I am having really good production from my pepper plants this year but your video has reminded me that I need to feed them. Thanks. 😎
I want to be inspired, I really do. Our heat index has been 115° the past two weeks and I... just...can't. My pepper plants can't take it. Eggplant, thriving and still fruiting. Even keeping the indeterminate tomatoes alive just for the heck of it. But everything else can't take it either. I'm really happy for you, though!
I made the decision to grow all my peppers for next year in 5 gallon buckets. I have already drilled holes in them (as per your instructions) THANK YOU🎉
There are big advantages to growing peppers in containers - no nematodes, easy over-wintering, easier to space and manage. However, please be aware they dry out quickly in summer. I strongly urge setting up drip irrigation. I have a tutorial on how to do so in containers here: ruclips.net/video/rDgNAJur2mM/видео.htmlsi=mvQnB9Aw_2n5Cwr4
Wonderful information! Poor Dale; Fourth of July is sooooo difficult for so many pets, not to mention nature's rumblings. Nature's rumblings scare me, toooo!
My dog is absolutely petrified of thunderstorms, and last night was a pretty rough night here in MA. For whatever reason it's been really warm and humid with a chance of storms pretty much every day!
I found that using the grow bag if you put a 16 in plastic container tray you can catch the water that seeps through and acts as a monitoring device to when you need to water again.also helps u with not wasting water.. I also found using grow bags u will possibly have to add more soil throughout the year due to diluting the soil and having it leach out over time..
Thanks for all the information on peppers. 5 gallon buckets really have to be fed thaw miracle grow. Dale is adorable, hopefully he’s okay after July 4 fireworks. Greetings from New York City.👍🏼🇵🇷🗽🐶
I use 2- 3 gal containers in a wicking method. My peppers are my best crop here in OKC I over wintered a habanero plant that is doing fantastic. I have nearly 50 peppers ripening already.
Just watched this video and all the tips to growing peppers you pointed out are spot on. I grow Datil peppers and Habanero peppers down here in St.Augustine Florida. Just now starting to get loads of peppers!! Thank you for the good info!! Subscribed!!
Peppers love the dry hot conditions! I grew Cayenne peppers in the greenhouse in late summer early fall and they were almost 8 foot tall and had 2 foot long fruit. They all ripened at the same time and we ended up dehydrating 90% of them for future use and sale at the co-op markets during the winter.
I just love these videos. Always a ton of useful information and professionally presented. This video was great as most of my gardening is in containers. Can't wait to get planting , but here in PA we're still about 6/8 weeks away. Thanks Millennial Gardener for helping take my garden to the next level.
I'm in zone 4b & other than some pest pressure early in the season (managed by introducing live ladybugs to the plants), I have found peppers to be surprisingly resilient & easy/hands off to grow. Even the hot pepper plants that got badly sunburned when I wasn't patient enough with the hardening off process & were left in 1gal nursery pots, written off as a loss have completely bounc d back & are absolutely pumping out pods!! I've also got 4 heirloom bell pepper plants in a 10gal fabric pot and they are Thriving with little to no intervention beyond occasional feeding and daily watering. At least a dozen peppers on each plant & putting out new flowers daily--and I didn't get them outside until mid June because of a cool, late spring. To be fair, since things warmed up, this is our consistently hottest summer in recorded history, so they're loving all the sun & humidity--but this is by far my most successful year for peppers & I cannot wait for them to start ripening up! I'll be growing several more varieties next year!
In New Mexico and I ended up having to out up a shade for my babies during the summer. They looked rough and the summer sun gets intense. Just got some grow bags and cant wait to see how they do. Will definitely fertilize more too. Thanks!
Thanks for the video. Went out and fertilized my pepper plants after watching this. I started growing them in pots last year, protected from the cold and they are now some of my favorite plants and started a few more from seeds this year. Could you do a video about transplanting older potted pepper plants and do you do root trimming? Thanks again! I've been able to keep my fig trees alive with your help too (lots of water and mulch) Tucson, AZ
I like your videos, I grow my bell peppers in 6gal containers and fertilize with fish emulsion once a week. They do great every year, I have 8 plants total and I picked over 20 this past Saturday.
My dog isn't phased by storms but I have friends that have used the comfort vest for dogs and they swear by them. It's supposed to make them feel like they are constantly being hugged and cuddled. Worth a try!
I am a pretty new subscriber. Of all the videos I’ve seen on you tube , you are the best . You are very detailed and very knowledgeable, thank you , I m a senior living here in Southern California, I love gardening even if I have a lot of medical problems, I don’t want to stop gardening.
My wife and I love your videos! QUESTION: We live in winter frigid Wyoming. However, we grow micro greens year round under grow lights. Can we use really good grow lights to "winter over" our pepper plants? Thank you for all of your amazing videos! We have page after page after page of notes just from you videos! ***We also enjoy your clever sense of humor!!! THANKS AGAIN!!!!
I’m in northern Illinois and start my peppers indoors and do a lot of pruning before I plant them outside late May, early June and they always look so much better and much bushier when I prune vs not. I have one store bought plant that was not pruned and it sticks out like a sore thumb right now 🤣
My Lab/Husky mix dog hated thunderstorms and fireworks. He would never be at ease until I found by putting him in a bathroom with no windows in the middle of the house, turn on the exhaust fan, put in a radio then turn the light off and close the door and all was fine when the storms were gone or the fireworks were over. Afterwards he would come out, wag his tail, follow me around the house and outside to go to the bathroom and every now and then he would get a treat if he wanted one. The storms and fireworks have a high pitched sound most dogs hear and get upset about. Drown out the sound and all is good.
Oh man, I've been fertilizing like two or three times a year in grow bags and wondering why the plants are so sick. Sounds like I need to massively step up my game.
Thank you for thos awesome Information. I've been struggling with container planting and this is so helpful.your so through and I formative 😊 ..I will have happier plants this year

@@MichaelRei99 I get lots of rain too. In general, we apply way too much fertilizer.
I only fertilize when the very top of the plant (new growth) is turning a lighter shade of green. Then I know it's time to hit more nutes.
Probably to much nitrogen is the cause of the more leaves and less fruits , vegetables nutes for first month of season than use bloom nutrients

Nice reminder about peppers in containers.. thank you!
You’re welcome!
11:30 disease resistance is the big factor for me. Can't grow bell peppers in my garden, but they do well in grow bags.
@@TheMillennialGardenerOh geez….. I didn’t realize that; with the cost of peppers I was hoping to grow a bunch of big peppers but now I think I’ll go buy a banana pepper and plant the seeds;
Sun’s Out… Gun’s Out!
This is great stuff! ❤
Glad it was helpful! I appreciate you watching!
Thank you for that information because I thought my pepper plants stop growing doing the winter. Now I know. Right now I'm just waiting for my new seeds to come in. Thanks again again
You do a great job, keep it up. Spread that knowledge.
When you repot for overwintering mix some perlite into the soil💪
It's been a strange year, for western PA and much of the north east, thanks to the wildfires in Canada. We spent much of June and early July with air quality warnings and a persistent haze. On the down side, many of my "hot weather plants" have been slow growing, but on the plus side, my "cold weather crops" are still going strong.
I'd been giving my containered peppers the water soluble fertilizer, but hadn't thought about the solids. I'll start doing that more frequently.
Peppers always been a battle with my new york weather. And I love peppers
Best gardening videos available in my opinion! Thanks ❤
Fantastic down to earth video on growing pepper plants in containers. Answered all my questions!
Your knowledge about gardening is very helpful!! Thank you MG😊👍👍
You’re very welcome! Thank you for watching!
Thanks. 😎
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
Great video, I'm going Serrano chili's right now in 3 gallon nursery containers. Thanks man
I've been gardening for years and I have learned so much from you! My favorite you tube channel ever! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
I appreciate that so much! I'm glad the videos are helpful.
Your videos are so encouraging, thank you!
Ha ha me to I've been overwintering my peppers since I saw you doing it a couple years ago. Thanks again
That last pepper looks awesome! 😍👌
Nature's rumblings scare me, toooo!
perfect! i want to grow peppers to make my own hot sauces every year and this seems nice and easy!
It's never this easy.
My dog is absolutely petrified of thunderstorms, and last night was a pretty rough night here in MA. For whatever reason it's been really warm and humid with a chance of storms pretty much every day!
I'm jealous. We have NOT even a drop of rain here in Phx 🙄
El Niño weather system this year
I found that using the grow bag if you put a 16 in plastic container tray you can catch the water that seeps through and acts as a monitoring device to when you need to water again.also helps u with not wasting water..
Thank you! Your videos are the best!
I use 2- 3 gal containers in a wicking method. My peppers are my best crop here in OKC
I over wintered a habanero plant that is doing fantastic.
You seriously just blew my mind with overwintering peppers. I have 9 different pepper plants and want to save the little fellas.
Thanks for the tips, I am doing my first garden at my new house and will definitely use these
I'm in zone 4b & other than some pest pressure early in the season (managed by introducing live ladybugs to the plants), I have found peppers to be surprisingly resilient & easy/hands off to grow.
Great informative video!
Thanks for sharing all your knowledge.
I love watching your videos.
great video sir.. very informative and very helpful.. I learned what Ive been doing wrong and haven't been doing at all.. Thank You.👽👽
I live in a rainforest forest. Thank you for your advice. I'll do 3 gallon fabric bags and add a regime of liquid fertilizer.
I like your videos, I grow my bell peppers in 6gal containers and fertilize with fish emulsion once a week. They do great every year, I have 8 plants total and I picked over 20 this past Saturday.
Love the banana trees
My dog isn't phased by storms but I have friends that have used the comfort vest for dogs and they swear by them. It's supposed to make them feel like they are constantly being hugged and cuddled. Worth a try!
OMG I absolutely LOVE this channel. Highly informative & straight to the point.
I appreciate it! Thanks for watching!
Looks like your about to hit 500k subs really soon just wanted to say congrats on that accomplishment.
This was very helpful to this newbie. Thank you!
I’m in northern Illinois and start my peppers indoors and do a lot of pruning before I plant them outside late May, early June and they always look so much better and much bushier when I prune vs not. I have one store bought plant that was not pruned and it sticks out like a sore thumb right now 🤣
glad to know i should be fertilizing much more often
Yup. Im fertilizing every week
Great video! Wow, so much I didn't know about peppers. I never heard of over wintering them, great concept.
Thank you for thos awesome Information. I've been struggling with container planting and this is so helpful.your so through and I formative 😊 ..I will have happier plants this year
❤❤❤ Thanks for sharing.❤❤❤
That is awsome! Gonna try that with some sweet peppers and pepperocini.
Thanks for this! I'm growing in my balcony and have introduced gardening to my friends too and we are learning! Would be interested to know more about container growing and tips
Really great video. 👍
I'm north of the boarder and you still included advice for me. Cheers
New MG video WooHoo! 👍👍
oh your dog is gorgeous , if you know a storm is coming or when fire works are on they can have a human valium tablet. or gently but firmly massage the top of their nose betwwen the eyes and gently massage her ears while you do that, reassure her and hopefully she will calm ..thunder coats are great too ..good luck..and great info on peppers too thanks
