    I made a mistake in the Sirilic section. I should have gone in to the ‘properties’ section of the Flats tab, and checked the box to subtract bias. I thought this was on by default, but it’s not. Thanks to Alan on Patreon for pointing this out.
    And another mistake. I thought pip was installed by default on MacOS but I was wrong. I think I installed it when I installed Anaconda (scientific python package) on my Mac. Anaconda is a large download, but they make a smaller version called miniconda. You can install the m1 miniconda package from here: docs.anaconda.com/miniconda/ and that should install python/pip on your Mac, and then the installation instructions for Sirilic should work. Sorry for the confusion!

      BINGO!! That miniconda install did the trick; I am now fully Sirilic. I will note, however, that I can't open Sirilic from Spotlight but need to run it from the Terminal window; it must be something specific to Miniconda vs. Anaconda, or maybe Intel 'conda vs. Silicon 'conda (I'm running Catalina on an Intel Mac), but realistically that's a minor inconvenience. Thanks, Nico! I'm looking forward to your opinion of the Askar 71F.

      I like that the process diagram indicates exactly this. There are no arrows from your bias frames indicating it creates the bias master but does nothing with it.
      What a great bit of software, the developer didn't need to do that, but they did and that's a lovely quality of life bit of work.

    For the first time I tried downloading and processing your data. And HOLY CRAP! Within half an hour from downloading the data from the second night I had a great looking image (at least in my opinion). It's so much easier and faster than stacking the 1000 2s exposures and fighting the noise at every step processing that I have to do with my own data.

    Excellent video Nico! I'll be rewatching it a few times because there are some little details I was never aware of in Siril!
    Good explanation and easy to follow!
    I would make a couple of suggestions:
    When stacking with Sirilic, you need to tell it to subtract the bias master. If you look at the flow diagram, the master flat and master dark are applied to the image, but the master bias is not. You have a checkbox in the project parameters to subtract bias and that needs to be enabled.
    When doing GHS, I would also try it in Human Weighted as slit sometimes improves the colour and I find the logarithmic scale to be better in showing if any of your RGB channels are over or under stretched.

    I recommend you use an ssd when processing. I made the mistake of, by default, leaving it on my hdd instead of ssd and it went from taking about 1-2minutes calibrating 2-300 images to 30ish minutes.
    The hdd will be botleneck #1.
    If storage is a concern, delete process data once finished. Will use about 50-75GB on average for me, but you can clear the process data. I keep all my images for later use but this is not necessary if you plan to retake them again with other equipment later.

    One other note: Not only do you have to have the Siril app installed, you have to point Sirilic toward your Siril app (or executable) in the Python Preferences, otherwise Sirilic doesn't know where to find the Siril scripts. That had me scratching my head for a few minutes, wondering why it wouldn't run. Open Python Prefs, and click the "Default" button opposite the "Siril Executable" window (top of the prefs pane, under Work Directory), and you're good to go - Python may or may not select your Siril installation by default.

    Couple things, I started using Sirilic a couple months ago and it really made my processing a lot more enjoyable. It is a lot easier than preprocessing each night individually and then stacking everything together.
    I have also found that Siril works faster on Linux (not sure about Mac) than Windows because Windows doesn't support symbolic links. That also means that in Linux it doesn't take up quite as much intermediate space.
    I did also enjoy the processing... process? Anyway, there were a couple moment where I was like "Hmmm don't know about that" but I just waited and was rather pleased at the end. Though, just personal preference, I usually only increase the saturation in my images until I'm happy with the saturation of the star field and I leave the main DSO alone

    • @lmaoroflcopter
      @lmaoroflcopter 24 дня назад +1

      Windows supports both symbolic and hard links, or rather NTFS does.
      It's a limitation of the program, Siril, rather than a failing of the OS in this case.

    Great video as usual Nico. A quick question though. Rick at Deep Space Astro did a similar video some time ago, but if I remember correctly, he modified the process diagram so biases were subtracted from flats by going into Properties>Flats and the ticking the bias subtract box. So I've been using that approach without really understanding what I'm doing. Which is the most 'correct' approach do you think? Cheers

    I see Siril 1.4 is on the horizon, a couple of channels have made videos of the upcoming changes. I'm wondering if Sirilc will keep up with the changes since it seems to be developed independently of Siril. Since upgrading to Siril 1.2.5 for MacOS I noticed after a multi session run, Sirilic failed to open Siril with the completed file. I had to open Siril and then the stacked Siriilic file. It would be awesome if Siril incorporated Sirilic since it appears Siril 1.4 will have a way to run Python apps
    What other software whould you recommend for multiple sessions besides Sirilic. If it's Windows only I use Parallels running Windows 11. It seems most of my imaging is now over multiple nights so I need something like Sirilic but I'm concerned about the maintenance of Siril. I notice Sirilic documentation is not very detailed. Thanks

    • @NebulaPhotos
      @NebulaPhotos  Месяц назад

      Free on Windows: Deep Sky Stacker handles multi-session pretty well with the 'groups' option at the bottom of the interface.
      Paid (multi-platform): AstroPixelProcessor and PixInsight both have semi-complex user interfaces, but have the most flexibility for multiple imaging sessions that I've seen. I personally use PixInsight for big multi-night projects because of all the flexibility available.

    • @billmeador215
      @billmeador215 Месяц назад

      @@BM83222 Found a formula on the British website - BBC Sky at Night Magazine. Works for calculating the max altitude an object will reach for planning purposes............I then use Stellarium's measure tool to see where it would be at any given time and date. The way to calculate max altitude is:
      The maximum elevation of the celestial equator for a particular spot is:
      90 - LAT.
      So for an observer at the latitude of London (51.5 N), the maximum elevation will be 90 - 51.5 = 38.5 over the southern horizon.
      Then add (for north declination) or subtract (for south declination) the tabulated declination of the object you want to view.
      Say you want to know the maximum altitude that the Andromeda Galaxy M31 will reach. Look up the declination (more or less 41degrees N) so it will be 41 degrees above the celestial equator i.e. 79.5 degrees altitude at most.
      Clear Skies!

      Ok would be basically any modern computer (past 10 years) if you are willing to wait long enough. Ideal in order of importance:
      1. Working directory should be on a fast SSD with plenty of space. If the SSD has a fast read/write speed like a NVME SSD that will be even better.
      2. Newer processor (CPU), more cores the better

    I have MacOS 14.5 Sonoma running on a 2023 MacBook Pro M3. I had an older version installed.I downloaded the latest Sirilic .whl file and placed it in my folder named Sirilic. In Terminal I navigated to that folder. The command "pip install" is not found. If I try the command "python --version", it is not found. If I try the command "python3 --version" then I get "Python 3.9.6" returned.
    If it use the install command "pip3 install sirilic-1.15.12-py3-none-any.whl" the Sirilc application is installed. It first removed version "sirilic-1.15.11". The install is successful but when I type in Sirilic in Terminal while I'm in the folder I get an error "zsh: command not found: Sirilic". In previous attempts to install and run Sirilic I discovered I needed to enter this command in Terminal first "path=/Users/myusename/Library/Python/3.9/bin". Once I did that and enter "Sirilc" the program starts up. If I quit Sirilic and try to start Sirilic from the Search window like you demonstrated in this video and enter Sirilic all it does is take me to the my Sirilic folder, it never starts the Sirilic python application. If I change the name of the folder so it doesn't have Sirilic in the name then the search only finds the Sirilc website. Search doesn't know that it needs to open Terminal to try to run Sirilc.. The only way I can open Sirilc is to open Terminal, enter the path command, then enter Sirilic.
    Why is your install different and easier? It sounds like your MacOS version has python installed instead of python3 like mine. It is what came with my MacOS. Unix is not my forte so this is as far as I wanted to go.

      The youTube channel AstroAF has a video of installing Sirilc on his M1 Mac. He used a workflow of installing Homebrew, which is used to install Python. He uses the python3 --version command to verify which version of Python gets installed. Then he uses the pip3 install command to install Sirilic.
      I remember trying this procedure and had the same issue with the path not set up. Some research indicated that MacOs came with Python. Also there is a Python website with newer versions of Python3. I don't know if using one of those installers sets up a new path. I haven't tried it because if I get into some sort of trouble my Unix knowledge is limited. When you type in the python --version or python3 --version commands what is returned? Thanks
