I feel like he was careless agaisnt the cage, he made sharp exits with his chin high and nearly got chinned multiple times before the ko, then in the ko sequence he tried to sit and counter which is the worst thing to do against a powerhouse. Maybe I'm being too harsh but I thought this was a cocky and arrogant performance from volk. Didn't try to slow the fight down in round 1 and 2 at all, no clinching or shooting
@@pstratos7 Volk didn't make any attempt to body lock either.. Volk is the best cage presser in FW history, didn't use that skill at all. Those entries into the pocket by Illia were prime for a body lock by Volk. Arrogant performance and he got punished hard.

I need someone to explain Volks defense. I noticed in the Yair fight too. he raises his lead shoulder, but his right hand is reaching across as if trying to pick off a jab, when someone is throwing big hooks at him. It seems like although his shoulder is raised, he is looking over it so his chin is not protected and his rear hand going across is a response to not trusting his lead shoulder. It seems odd.

Appreciate the analysis of Nakamura-Vera. I think people were too harsh on Vera’s performance, thought that fight was a fun grappling bout, lots of scrambles and strategy there, with Nakamura showing some real guts diving into and consistently passing Vera’s guard.
Scrambles were good but not much strategy there. Vera was throwing things at the wall and hoping something stuck, especially after he done his shoulder.
Kinda wonder how the fighters being similar in height affected things. Volk could more comfortably throw higher kicks, but I imagine his ducking overhands wouldn't be as safe?
Not just that, but it's much easier to get into range to actually setup your control and whatever gameplan you've got going on. Against taller fighters high kicks are absolutely much harder, but you also have to account for the fact that midsection kicks are sometimes your best counter for a longer punch if you can land them (body kick after baiting a straight for example so you can lean out of reach), meanwhile your opponents kicks can hit you outside your range so entering it is usually the only option to actually progress the fight. It radically changes how you have to fight, like, if you watch that first Islam fight Volkanovski has to constantly close range while dealing strikes he can't really counter unless he closes the opponent down, meanwhile he never has that issue against someone his own size. The second fight went the way it did because Islam worked out he just had to outrange with kicks while Volkanovski was trying to gain distance, which Volkanovski clearly hadn't had time time to work out a solution (because 11 days really isn't enough for that lol). Volkanovski probably can head kick at that height, but you have to put the position of both fighters in your mind. You have to be very, very close to headkick a taller fighter, and this leaves you open to a variety of counters to what is a relatively slow technique (takes time to bring your leg up and over).
