- This is a simple explanation of how a refrigerator can stop cooling, even if there is nothing wrong with the fridge.

My daughter was being a little ham in the video, I hope I got the point across. lol
I used to run into this on a daily basis doing service on the road. If your refrigerator is a victim of the door being left open, just use a hair dryer on the damper in the freezer to thaw out the frost. You'll know when you have cleared the vent from the freezer to the fridge when you can feel the air blowing into the refrigerator compartment.

Awesome Bill! I tackled my side by side, no fridge cool Whirlpool and found exactly what you described. (of course no one confessed in advance that they left the door open overnight) and it is now a very happy and very cold fridge again. Kudos to you and your little one.

My wife thought she may have not closed the freezer door completely this morning......so I'm hoping that things may have gotten "iced up" and that it will work now. I also know to listen for that evaporator fan thanks to your video. I am grateful for you sharing the expertise!
Unplug the refrigerator, remove the food from the freezer. Grab your hairdryer and run it in the vents inside the freezer for about 20 minutes. This will clear the frost that has built up in the damper area and allow the air to flow into the refrigerator compartment.

I can’t unplug my rv fridge but I can flip the break to cut the power. Is this this same thing as the “24 hour reset” with the doors open but a sped up process?

I got the problem when I left open my Ref for 4 hrs and then its stopped freezing water at lower thermostate setting.I called the Engg to see the issue.As you shown hopefully everything will be fine.
I sure appericate your reply.I will replace the relay and capacitor and then check it as you said to.Sure hope it will fire up the coils on back are not dirty it has no fan to cool it its just a long wide condenser on back.I like your videos.

multijrwilliams is right on, when i'm doing service, in a case like this I would replace the relay and capacitor on the compressor and check for amperage. Most of the time the compressor will fire up with no click and you are good to go. If a new relay doesn't stop the click then your compressor is bad.

My door was left open for two hours and the cooling slowly stopped. The refrigerator was a little louder than normal. I had a technician check it out and he said the compressor and evaporator fan needed to be replaced for $950! Its a newer refrigerator and I find it hard to believe two hours killed the compressor.

Bill, I don't have kids but we are all used to children becz we were all once younguns, so I assure you she was no distraction. You yourself were in the spotlight and your daughter was just background music. Really, no big deal. In fact, the dynamics were rather sweet and a great lesson to parents about how to be so kind and generous with a child. Congrats to the perfect daddy.
I know this was like years ago. But It still applies. I was trying to open my freezer and fit things in and I guess I didn’t realize it was maybe like 10-15 minutes rearranging. I feel like everything shut off. It kicked on maybe like 10 minutes later. Would everything start working again since it was such a short time or would I still need to clear my fridge and use the dryer?!

Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I left the door open.... and I noticed that 24 hours later the freezer wasn't cooled down. Later I realized the fridge was warm too.
The fan was still running on my side x side. I emptied the freezer, took out he shelves, and unscrewed the interior back panel. The evaporator was a block of ice. I unplugged the fridge, laid towel in bottom of the freezer to collect water and used a hairdryer to thaw ice. When I went to push back fridge I found water sloshing from underneath. I had to open the lower back panel and soak up the water from the pan... (it was NASTY). Freezer is now below freezing but the fridge is at 50 degrees. Its been less than 12 hours since I turned it back on.
I'm hoping that given some more time the fridge will catch up... but in case it doesn't Do you have a recommendation? There wasn't any issue before the freezer door was left open.

That kid of yours really adorable , well below my tolerance threshold , meaning I can tolerate a ton more . So i really enjoyed her tantrums. Really made the video very interesting . Missed the CAT though . Now coming to the refrigerator. My 70 year old Dad left the freezer compartment slightly ajar now both the freezer and the refrigerator wont cool as before. I am going to unplug everything and let it defrost for a couple of hours , hope everything will be ok by then. If you can share any additional info that would be wonderful. Will update how it went later.
Take the back panel off the inside of the freezer after unplugging it and blow dry the coils until the ice is gone. Make sure to put a bowl on the top shelf to catch the thawed water. It will take about 20-30 minutes but afterward you are good to go.

Great video, loved your sidekick! I have the opposite problem. The freezer door was left open about an hour and a half. Now food in the refrigerator is freezing and the food in the freezer is frozen harder than normal (ie ice cream). I can't seem to find an answer on how to fix that.

I have left the fridge lower door (fresh food) open many times. Yes, I am a moron. Today, after a mere two hours, the compressor wouldn't come on--no sounds whatsoever. I tripped the breaker for about 20 minutes (nothing to lose; already took food to another fridge) and when I reset the breaker, the fridge seems to be working normally. But the previous time this happened, I could hear what I think was a compressor running, but I also heard an unusual sound, like running your finger across a comb, rising in pitch, but muted. It would happen about once or twice a minute. Eventually, this stopped and fridge seemed to be working fine. Until today. Will the compressor shut itself down under any conditions and just need to cool off or be reset itself? Or should I shop for new fridge? (I did not install the fridge. It needs to have level adjusted so this quits happening, but is it too late?)
I have a 15 year old GE top side Freezer, Refridge on the bottom, and it's my spare located in my garage. It is not cooling very well, barely keeping the food frozen. As a matter of fact, some of my food I had to throw out because it unthawed. When I unplugged it, the condensor made 2 or 3 knocks, then I plugged it back in and it actually got colder.

Just did a 24 hr open-door defrost on our 5 year old Frigidaire french door machine. Couldn't believe how much water drained out into the pan which I had to get out by using a sponge and ringing out several times. Thing now runs like new with perfect temps. We replaced nothing at all!. Think we will do this every few years to get all the ice out of the system that has built up and is not being handled by the normal defrost. Found poor freezer door seal along the bottom and I know we were overpacking the freezer.

My problems is slightly different, I found my refrigerator & freezer door open door open and neither the fridge or freezer section is working. There is no frost in the freezer. Everything was working fine before this happened. I am trying what you recommended in the video, unplugged it and now will wait 24 hours and plug back in and hope it works. What do you think, worth a shot?

In my case, I left the freezer cracked open overnight, and within a day or two, everything in the freezer started thawing, ice cream melted, etc. The refrigerator part also was not cooling even though the control was set high. In your video, you said the freezer-door-open would probably not affect the freezer itself, just the refrigerator part. ... We almost went out today and bought a new refrigerator! Then someone told me to try turning it off and unplugging it and letting it manually defrost, then plug it back in and set the cooling to about 5 (out of 9). So we'll see. But it would be interesting to hear what you think about leaving the freezer door open and the freezer itself quits cooling. Thank you for your video.
Alice K Was the fan in the freezer running? Frost may have stopped it, then you have no freezer either. Most of the time the ice will just block the air from getting to the fridge compartment when the door was left open. OR You may have a defrost issue.

Bill Newberry I am having the same issue with Alice. My freezer door was cracked open and now both the fridge and freezer sides are not cooling. Everything in my freezer has defrosted and there is melted water everywhere. The fan is still running though... In this case, would unplugging make any difference at all?
Update: The next morning, after leaving the refrigerator unplugged for about 4 hours, there was no water on the floor. I plugged it back in to the outlet and set the freezer and refrigerator on 5 (out of 9). In the morning, everything was running just fine! We put some water in an ice cube tray in the freezer, and within about 1 1/2 hours, we had ice cubes! So glad I didn't run out and immediately replace this 10 year-old refrigerator!
Bill: If you have a video on easy troubleshooting for a refrigerator that isn't running (not cooling) when the door was NOT left open, can you please tell me the name of the video? We got this working with your instructions a couple weeks ago. Today it quit again, and the circumstances seem different. Thanks!
Not sure if this is my problem, but it might be. I emptied the frig and I am thinning out the freezer of stuff. My icemaker is not hooked up, so I never use the filter so I never changed it. I did remove the icemaker tray and overfilled the freezer. (I will put it back inside. It has been horribly hot here for weeks, and I often leave the frig door open too long. and there is a little frost in the freezer. I hope it reboots the frig... Maytag.... By the way, Your daughter just may be the next Vanna White! :-)
+Candy Eve ... I took most everything out of the fridge and freezer, turned it off, left the doors open in 85 degree temps in here, and have been washing the whole thing out, shelf by shelf. After Six hours I turned it back on and fe air blowing from the fridge vent! Yay! After I get done cleaning it, I will turn it back on and see what happens!!!

@Bane It has been working, but it does this on and off.... Today it shut down again, no visible ice in the freezer,but I had both doors open about 8 minutes working with them. Bad me! Hope it comes back on! I shut it all.down a for a bit. Hope it recycles itself when I turn it back on.

Hello! Thanks for your video. My fridge door was left ajar, probably about an inch, for three days while I was gone. To my surprise, when I opened my freezer the morning after having shut my fridge door, everything was defrosted, or at least partly defrosted. Do you know why this would have happened? Was the fridge relying so much on the freezer to keep cold that it couldn't stay cold? Even if that was the case, I would think it would have refrozen overnight after I closed the fridge door.

Then, after a few days, it is doing the same thing and doesn't turn off, or at least the fan is continually running. I took your advice and cleaned out the dust from the coils under the rear panel (it was very dirty) in hopes to fix the problem, but to no avail. What are you thoughts??
Very good. I am going through your videos about this type of refrigerator. Mine wont cool the bottom properly but will get to proper temps in the freezer.
We had a vacation renter in our condo, and when they checked out yesterday, the refrigerator would not get cold. New renters said the freezer was cold, so it was obviously still able to generate cold air, but even though the refrigerator was turned to it's coldest setting, the refrigerator was not cold enough. The renters who were there when the refrigerator died left some extreme messes inside the condo that we don't normally see, so I suspect they did something to the refrigerator. The new renters turned the thermostat down to zero and left the refrigerator door open for several hours, but it did not work when they turned it back on. Can you tell me what could possibly be causing this problem, and whether or not it was likely caused by leaving the door open?

I just wanted to thank you SO MUCH for the videos. We recently bought a house and it has a nice Kenmore deep side-by-side. It seemed to quit working today and I was "sick" because we are trying to get an oven fixed (ignitor went bad). I found your video about the evaporator fan. After hearing the condenser work, and the fan work behind the fridge, I traced the problem to the evaporator fan (which didn't work earlier today but started kicking on this afternoon). Long story short.......

While trying to figure out why my frig wasn't cooling but my freezer was fine, I noticed the gasket on frig door wasn't sealing. We replaced the gasket and when we put the door back on, the door is listing to the left. It seems like it's not sitting up high enough?? We have a Kenmore side by side, model # 106.56536400. I watched several of your videos while trying to problem solve. thx for any help with the door!
Amy Dell The lower door hinge that the fridge door sets on - Take off fridge door, tighten lower hinge bolts, use hammer and hit the right side of the lower door hinge, this is to make it point straight towards you and not to the right. Re-tighten bolts and put the door back on. Take the door off by removing the upper door hinge and lifting the door off of the lower hinge. I'm only saying because people have done the opposite way. This will stop your fridge door from leaning to the left. Make sure fridge is level on the floor before doing any of this. Use a level on the top of the refrigerator, not on the doors.

Tony H If there is only frost on the back panel, you have a defrost issue and not a door left open problem. If it looks like it snowed on everything inside your freezer then you have a door left open issue.
To fix the door left open issue, unplug fridge, remove back panel inside freezer, remove all frost and ice build up, put back together, plug in, let it get cold again.

My freezer light will not come on after the door was left a little open overnight. Usually it would come back on in a couple days we are thinking because the humidity in it settled back to normal. This has 5 weeks ago now and still no light. We replaced the bulb and that did not make it work either! Any help please.
I have a small office fridge, apparently someone left the door slightly open and now it wont even turn on when i plug it in. It was left like that over night. Anyone have any advice that doesnt entail buying a new one? Im good at fixing stuff but never touched a fridge before.

found that the front part of the refrigerator/freezer was hot - the section between the upper freezer and fridge that you can touch when one of the doors is open. then discovered that nether the freezer or refrigerator was cooling. the fan is still working, just no cold air. ideas? I'd love to be able to repair it rather than put it out to the curb. it's a whirlpool, about 20 years old.
Thanks Bill. I have a small fridge behind my Bar and wondering if it's worth repairing. The door was left open and it appears that the motor stopped running. Now, when I plug it in I hear a click or two, but the motor will not turn on/it is not cooling. Am I SOL or is it something that can be fixed inexpensively? Thanks!
I would throw a 3 n 1 on the compressor and see if it fires up. The relays may be shot on yours. Not SOL just yet. lol Give that a try. Make sure there is enough room for air to move around the fridge. If it's in too tight of a spot this could also cause the over heat and click issue.
I left it for like 10 or 20 minutes is it damaged alot?

Discovered the refrig door open 1/2 inch after 6 hours gerrrrrrr...
Back wall of freezer had a small layer of frost and wiped it off and tried to
clean out the vents at the bottom of back wall.
Wiped the moisture off items and walls of fridge and increased the cold setting
slightly a few hours ago but the fridge temp has dropped by only a few
degrees. Anything else that ca be done?

Bill, my wife and I came home from work to find our cat on top of the fridge with the freezer door wide open. Everything thawed. No frost on the back panel, just puddles of mess everywhere! The freezer is working again, everything is starting to freeze again but now the fridge isn't cooling. What do we do? I watched the video but I'm still confused. Not sure what kind of fridge it is

My problem is , when my Frigidaire thinks the door is open then starts beeping?? We push on it and the beeping stops, for 5 or 10 minutes. Fridge starts getting warmer while the door is closed… something isn’t aligned or a switch or something

Most likely no, it's probably just hot from excessively running. Give it a few hours to run a little cooler. Should quiet up.

found my light was stuck on. everything was warm and that night i saw a little light through the door seal ? the light switch was not being push all the way. so glued on a spacer on it and now it go's all the way in and light is off now...
+John Casor the light on will create so much heat inside the refrigerator. Your door needs adjusting, they tend to sag after some time. In the near future I will be doing a video on this with my refrigerator, very close to having the same issue.

Thanks Bill... thats exactly what happened! Nobody claimed responsibility so once again we blamed the dog...but the fridge works fine we defrosted it for 6 hours and when we turned back on it worked fine! thank you

Bill, I left the bottom freezer door open for 2 to 3 hours. Later I found that it has stopped cooling. The weather is moist and it's raining here . I kept it on for a night but I found that it's still not cooling. Please suggest me what should I do now ?
