    I absolutely dig this setup. I picked mine up in July and couldn't be happier with it. I love the grunting sounds that the 3.0 makes when it's under a little load. It's music to my ears and could listen to it all day, but I also got to spend time with my dad when I was much younger traveling with him in his Kenworth with a 3406 Caterpillar and loved the sound that it made. There's just something special about the sound of an inline 6 diesel.

    I love my 3.0. I pull a lot of trailers and she pulls like my 2500 with the 6.6. Just not as much weight. My camper is 7500 lbs and I can hardly feel it back there. GM did good on this one.

    I have this engine in my truck. I absolutely love it. I have a crew cab with a 6.5 foot box. I got a tip for you. If you have a truck stop with DEF at the pump it will save you a bit of money. I paid $2.09/gal at the pump. The best thing i find getting it at the truck stop is the DEF is always fresh and the looks you get when you drive a pick up to a DEF pump. You will get some sweet looks from the truckers haha. You will get asked about your truck.

    • @BanditDavesToyChest
      @BanditDavesToyChest  2 года назад +1

      It’s so wild but I cannot for for the life of me find a DEF pump available at any local truck stops that aren’t over 30 minutes away. That said there is a Flying J on my way to and from work in Maryland that’s bound to have pump DEF. I’ll check it out.

    I picked up a 20' 2.7T double cab in December of 2021. Diesel is expensive here (roughly 60cents more than 87). As you mentioned the truck has everything it needs and not anything more. I looked at the denali variant, but couldn't justify the price tag over what more or less you get. I don't tow as much as some do, so the 2.7T has been great for my needs. (8spd) What sold me was the ride quality, interior that isn't too overwhelming, Drive selection on teh wheel, and how comfortable it is for a 6'2" gentlemen. I came from a Subaru Outback, so it was a nice step up. I'm excited for remodel of the Sierras later this year.

    I bought a new 2021 seirra 3.0 duramax 3 weeks ago. I have had no issues yet. The dealer filled it when we picked it up. Just had to put fuel in it. 400 miles and it was just under half. All of the miles were city.

      @Dark farts being new doesn't always mean good. I bought a new 18' challenger the dealer had to repaint the door before i could have it, cause it was messed up and no one was smart enough to see it till then. I also bought a new cavalier many years ago and once again the dealer had to replace the whole dash it was warped or something, and they didn't see it till i got it.

    Hi Dave! Thank you so much for your videos. The information that I have received from you, General Motors Jeff, Truck and SUV talk, TFL truck among others have led me to ordering (about 1 month ago) a refreshed 2022 Carbon Pro AT4 3.0 Duramax in Dynamic Blue Metallic here in Colorado Springs, Colorado! I can't wait to take delivery of her!

      I did the exact same thing. Watched the hell out of all of those guys and some people about this engine. I'm moving from a black 2018 LTZ with a 6.2L and put the order in on a refreshed white RST with the 3.0 on the weekend. (I have had so many black vehicles, god I love them but I HATE how they look dirty 10 min after you clean them). My 6.2 does about 12-14 MPG in the city if I absolutely baby it.
      That new interior looks so damn awesome. I plan on keeping this truck for as long as it wants me. The only draw back is that my commute isn't super long but I do enough driving around the city in the evenings and weekends that the regen issue shouldnt be all that bad I'm hoping.
      I also know my dad is big time against the oil pump drive belt. Meh big deal. 241,000 km before they say to inspect the belt. Not even to replace it.

    I have an AT4 with the baby duramax. This thing is awesome. Even with aggressive treads we still average 8.5 L/100 in the summer. Up around 10 in the winter. My only gripe is that ours is plagued with the random no start issue. Back in august-Oct it was doing it at least once every two weeks. Dealership won’t touch it because it doesn’t happen to them. Touch wood it hasn’t happened in a few months.

I recently had my first problem at 5,000 miles took it to the dealer and they had to remove my DEF tank due to a connector that wasn't snapped together properly.

    Great video sir!! I leased a 2021 GMC SLE 1500 CREW with 5'8" bed and it had that fancy tail gate. Here is my take....after 5k miles i sold the lease. Truck had a phenomenal powertrain. Best i ever drove in any pickup except for a 96 ram dually with 5.9 Cummins. Very comfortable truck. It had a 1775 payload. Back seat was enormous. Things i didn't care for: In the shop for six weeks for cooling fluid control valve. After that no issues but dam i lost essentially two months of lease use! Moreover i hated the handling in my gm. It rolled around corners like a big old couch. Way too soft ride for me. Now gm may fix this as you can FINALLY order these trucks with Max Tow. The powertrain is so capable they should offer this in a 7850 GVWR like Ford does worh HDPP. Anyhow since it was a lease i wasn't willing to upgrade suspension to address the body roll. Things that were my fault...i didnt like the tiny bed. Next truck will be a crew but i need a 6'5" bed. Also i realized that i would prefer a center counsel for storage. I never thought i would like that but i didnt have it on this truck and wish i did. The multi pro tailgate is cool! But if you carry mulch and gravel and stuff like me the materials work their way into hinge openings and my tailgate rattled like crazy from small stones getting in there and moving around. I wont get a multi pro again. I didnt care for over the hood visibility compared to 2021 ford f150 or ram 1500. The hood design was not my favorite. The last thing for all you buyers.... my gm averaged only 24.7. I drive very slow like an old fart. Never got better than 28. I think the chevy front end is much more aerodynamic so i would go that route for sure. Guys with chevy 3.0s said they faired much better on highway mpgs. Would i get another 3.0? You bet. But only IF i could order a chevy 1500 with the max tow and lower trim level and thus heavier suspension and a higher numerical axle ratio for powertrain longevity and maybe hit a 2000 pound payload capacity. Having said all that i am driving a phenomenal 2004 Ford Ranger until 2024 to see if prices stabilize. If Ford offers a hybrid 150 with the heavy duty payload package option and thus an honest 2500 or higher payload that will be the next truck i spend money on. Otherwise the big three can watch me drive past their dealerships with this old ranger in perfect condition. It has the BFT package and 4.0 in extended cab. The BFT gives you 4.10 gears front and rear and it pulls like a wild man. But it rides like a dumptruck and only gets 15 to 19 mpgs! But my friends it is paid for! God bless and lets pray for those in the war that our leaders wake up and grow spines. I am ready to go. Our forefathers taught us to love freedom more than cheap gas and to even love freedom more than life itself.

    I have 34,000 miles on mine and at around 25,000 the engine light came on and they checked the code and it was a Def system issue . So they finally worked on it and ever since then my MPG is Terrible . I use to get 21 in the city ,Now I only get 16 mpg. Since there is no codes I cant get it fixed and I have decided to trade it for a 6.6 diesel. But besides that issue the 3.0 was fine before the dealer did what ever they did .

    Considering this truck with either 5.3 V8 or the diesel. What's it like owning a diesel? How often do you fill the DEF? I live in northern MN, often way below zero. Starting?

    • @BanditDavesToyChest
      @BanditDavesToyChest  2 года назад

      I love the diesel…it was my first and frankly not much different than owning the gas engines. Tows extremely well and has a great ride for my insane commute. While I do not get below zero where I’m at I’ve never had a starting issue or diesel gelling issue. As far as def refill - I’m putting over 1000 a week on her and I think I’m refilling the DEF 2.5 gal at a time at about 2.5-3 week intervals so about 2500-3000 miles I’m dumping in 2.5 gallons. So for a more normal driver maybe once every month?? For your case it does come with a block heater but I will never use it since it will never get cold enough.

    Coming from the auto industry as a mechanic and I don’t know why no one is honest about this but just a fyi the true and primary reason for 0-winter and low weight oils ie the 20 being the viscosity but anyways it’s because of how most people start the cars and run their engines straight on the highway without allowing the engine to warm up which cause extra damage over time it’s not tolerances it’s for bad owners for lack of a better term

      Never plugged it in and have yet to have an issue. In NJ where I’m at it rarely gets cold enough to think about plugging in but I believe GM recommends to NOT use the block heater above 0F anyway. On really cold days it sounds a little “diesel-y” starting up but quickly quiets back down and stays there.

    Was seriously thinking about the Diesel but ended up getting the 2022 Elevation X31 Off Road package with the 5.3 V8. Picked it up a few weeks ago and I absolutely love this thing. I don’t do much high mileage driving maybe the occasional road trip so the V8 works for me. I was very surprised of the mileage I am getting so far with a mix of highway and city. Mine has the DFM feature on the engine so this V8 performs amazingly when it comes to mileage. Looks like about 400-450 miles to a tank. Probably pushing 500 miles if only highway miles. And the power is way more than I need. This thing has some serious pull. The newer 2022 elevation comes with the multipro tailgate which is really useful. And with the preferred package you get the premium Bose stereo system and rear electric window. Being the middle trim you get more than enough features plus some. Never been more satisfied with a vehicle purchase in my 20 years of driving.

      For 99% of the time the truck has everything you need to get the job done. There has been the rare occurrence where surrounding traffic has been extremely aggressive (passing at well over 85) where I’ve acknowledged that this truck (and most trucks in general) just can’t and shouldn’t be.
      Hypothetically if you were cruising along at 85 mph and wanted to get past a long string of cars, you can mash it and get it done but you will notice that it doesn’t blow your socks off. If you had to do it at a lower speed like 50, it’s a totally different experience.
      For me it’s an all around awesome truck and would buy it again if given the opportunity.

I’m concerned about the longevity of these engines (too new to get any stories of life estimates). Also, how are you able to perform your own maintenance without voiding your warranty? Some manufacturers require ASE certified mechanics or the dealership. Thanks!

    • @BanditDavesToyChest
      @BanditDavesToyChest  2 года назад +5

      They cannot force you to use them or void the warranty. I make sure I use GM parts wherever possible but I keep receipts and the burden of proof is on the dealership to show what the issue is and prove it was something you did. Most of the time there isn’t a direct correlation to something like an oil change and why a sensor went bad or that a wire is pinched. I do understand folks reservations to doing maintenance because there are a LOT of crooked dealerships out there. It’s part of the reason I’d rather do my own work honestly

      The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act is a US Federal law, which specifically stipulates that the manufacturer may not require anyone to have maintenance done by the dealer. They can not void your warranty for doing your own maintenance. The cool thing is, if they tried, you'd have the government on your side. Just keep records of everything you do, keep receipts if possible. I often order oil and filters from Amazon, if they have the best price. That makes it a simple to pull up records of past purchases.

    I do appreciate this video; I wanted to listen in, as I'm 12 months away from trading in my 2020 GMC Elevation Crew 2.7 T; And I'm interested in hearing from actual owners of a Duramax 1500; But the spike in Diesel cost has lessened that pursuit? I have managed to capture 34 MPG's in my 2.7 T; And still shows on my dash "Best MPG's 34" I did this from Key Largo, Fla to Big Pine Key, Fla. Avg speed 45-48 mph. I live in a pretty dense city Miami, Fla and I manage 18-19 city but at times I get 21-22 mpg's. I have yet to have an issue with the motor or 8 spd trans at 18K miles. I have now towed 7,000 miles with it. My recent tow in my new upgraded RV travel Trailer was 960 miles; Total weight RV & Payload 6,010 LBS (Imagine XLS 22mle) The truck handled it with no issues and mpg's 10.9 -11.1 at speeds of 62-64 mph. I came across you, me trying to find 1500 Duramax owners and perhaps towing on a regular basis. I'm looking to travel over to the West of the country and want to stay in a half ton as a daily driver. And in Colorado, Utah, etc. ..I'm going to need power for high elevation for a long period of time. But since the major spike in Diesel prices I'm not sure if the trade off is worth it? "Yes I supposedly passed my 80% of tow & Paylod ratio. But in early 2021 GM came back and said that the 2.7L could be declared to handle 9K towing capcaity, So I went with a lower number 80% of 7500 lbs..

      @@j_mm1084 I got mine in the summer and did not smell anything. When the outside temp dropped colder like 30-40, the cold start smell is awful. I did some research and found that the engine control has smart way to heating the engine quickly by redirecting exhaust gas backward and seems like doing that is causing the exhaust gas to leak into the engine compartment, and the fresh air vent under the hood near the windshields is sucking that smell into the cabin. Well my dealer did a smoke test and said they had to replace the leaky def injector and the clamp, that did help a lot with the smell. But The truck still have other leaks somewhere which is still causing some smelly air into the cabin. The recycle air mode does seem to be able to lockout the outside air completely. It’s been a headache since my family can’t endure the smell. As the engine heats up, the smell went away. I got another leak somewhere but the dealer does seem to be able to find it. Is it kinda like a squeaking noise that u hear? If it is it’s probably the leaf springs, they have some spacers those cause the noise. I took my 2019 back when it had 13-14 thousand miles to the dealer they didn’t have a recall but many customers had the same issue and they fixed it for free, a thousand miles after it started squeaking again but it was less noisy and not as loud, i just sprayed wd40 in between all the leaf springs and everything that I thought could cause the noise, had to do that a couple of times.
