Love it too! Way back in the late 90s I had a hand me down blouse. It had two buttonholes since it was supposed to close in a trendy, just at the bust, belly button out style. I had the bright idea to turn it around and close it up, take off the short sleeves completely and take off the collar and make it into a pronounced boat neck type. Thankfully my mom had the sewing skills to bring my ideas to fruition. Loved it and used that top for a loooong time.
The reason those colours look so good on you is that the soft green is similar to your eyes and the cool pinky-purple is similar to your lips. So the top picks up and highlights two features that are small in size but highly significant to human psychology and attention. A related tip for all you subtle colour seasonists out there: For similar reasons, choosing a nail polish colour that matches your eyes is very captivating. People often don't realise why they like it so much, but it's because it's echoing a part of the body that is of great significance to onlookers.

I have only recently come back to sewing after...30 years. So I am kind of where you are at. Loving the process of learning how to meet my own clothing needs. If you like the back seam, I recently made a Bronze Age shirt design for myself. Made from a single piece of fabric and it has a T seam in the back, It looks and feels like a design choice. I need to tweek the basic design for my body shape, but the shirt I made looks lovely. Has a similar fit to what you designed.

I strongly suggest checking out The Closet Historian’s videos on creating a block/slope for your body and your patterns in a simple, intuitive way. She doesn’t approach it with Maths, but in a super practical way. I used to dread the idea of self drafting and now I will never NOT self draft again. Also, her video on darts is by far the best video on understanding construction I’ve ever seen.
Not to be dramatic or anything, but while you were talking about creative fulfillment at the end of the video I was struck with such a feeling of gratitude that I get to live at a time when this type of entertainment is available. Watching someone else pursue their creative endeavors is so inspiring and though I don’t have a lot of time for my own projects right now (mom of very young children), this helps fill my tank. You’re giving me ideas for the thrifted garments I have sitting in my stash. I’ll get to them eventually!

I liked everything about this video, especially the part where you had to figure out how to make the pattern fit better. I like you try to draft things myself and often stumble upon unexpected issues. I am currently making a summer top for my daughter using a shirt that my husband couldn’t wear anymore (collar all worn). It is taking me a long time since I am not a professional; but one by one every problem gets solved. I decided to add a bit of interest to the plain blue silky top by using one of the stitches on my machine as embroidery along the edges and over the seams to secure them. I bought variegated embroidery thread to match the fabric and it looks very nice. Your videos are inspirational; I look forward to the next ones!
I really appreciate your creation process because it's somewhat like mine. I especially benefit from your struggles and troubleshooting for patterns. I work a 9 to 5 Monday through Friday Job and time to spend on pattern, drafting and experimenting with what shapes result in what problems for sleeves especially is a premium. Not only that but because I work a desk job, time toiling away at a sewing table has its limits for me in a given week. So every minute I can gain experience, knowledge and secondhand lessons learned is very valuable. Thank you for sharing your process!

Rit sell colour remover. Removing all the colour allows you to start or dye from scratch. I love your ideas. I love linen too, and I thrift it. Silk and wool too.
I love wearing any color even if it doesn’t “suit” me it’s all about confidence! I think leaving the sleeves as is if you had the main body within your color palette would be a good option in the future

I loved this video! Seeing your design process was fascinating and inspiring. I’ve sewn all my clothes for several years and I’ve spent most of my time on fit and drafting, but I’d love to add simple embroidery and get more creative. You may have learned this by now, but I’m pretty sure the front of a bodice pattern is always wider than the back, at least for women. The parts of the pattern that need to match in length are the parts that sew together, so the shoulder seam and side seam. Then you can check that the neckline works by butting up the shoulder lines to each other and seeing if there is a nice curve from front to back. I hope that makes sense. I would love to see more of your dying process. I have some yarn that needs a dye bath, and over dying fabric is fascinating. It would be great to watch a regular person like me use Rit dye.😊 Thanks for all the work you are putting in on these videos. I’m sure it’s not easy, but I’m learning a lot from you. Good luck👍

omg amazing video, i loved watching your problem solving process. im slowly realizing how much i prefer natural fabrics to any amount of blended/polyestery stuff. im slowly going thru my wardrobe and thrift flipping to have those pieces that just fit perfectly and work exactly how u want. its the besttt.
my favorite part of these projects is definitely the making-of process. I'd also like to see a start to finish thrift flip, where you include footage of the thrift process. idk if that'd be too long for most people though.

I see people whipping through projects, and get frustrated that it takes me a long time, but I check each and every step to make sure that it is what I want. Even then , there are still some issues, but I have only thrown out 1 project in 5 years. I think that your approach brings better results. By the way, stitching the grid on the bodice was ingenious! I'm only halfway through the video, but maybe you'll get to this: sleeves are often a bit bigger than the armhole. I went though a phase of making clothes with vintage patterns and this is how the sleeves are usually made to fit--adding stitching that you remove to very slightly ease the sleeves--and below I'm going to try to attach some text I copied from reddit about this, since I can't figure out how to explain it myself: So sleeve pieces are usually slightly bigger than the armscye (arm hole) they attach to, though not massively so. To fit it in you will need to gather it. (Not so it's visibly puffed-you're just easing it). Here's how: Use a straight stitch with a long length and sew two parallel lines of stitching around the curved top of the sleeve piece, within the seam allowance but not so close to the cut edge that the fabric frays - about 5mm and 10mm in from the edge tends to work well. Leave the end of the threads long and don't tie them as you'll be removing the stitch later. Find the middle of the sleeve piece and pin or clip it to the top shoulder seam, bring careful not to get the threads in the pin or clip. Pull gently on the top or bottom threads, (being careful not to pull them out or snap them) to 'bunch up' or gather the fabric until it's the same size as the armscye. Pin/clip as you go to fit it into the armscye, smoothing the gathers evenly. This takes some practice so take your time to avoid lumpy seams. Sew the seam. Remove the two long lines of stitching by pulling them out and then proceed with the rest of the sewing.
Did learn last week that some tape measures change (mine are prob older than you) so compare with a metal ruler. Recall a some people have gap in back of top and a fix in old Vogue book on fitting clothing . Thanks for the showing details as am trying to get self back to fixing front of arms of top made.
Colour analysis is controversial, but everybody seems to agree that what matters is the colour next to your face. I find that I can wear any colour (even the ones I used to fear) if I have a “good” colour that I always gravitate towards next to my face (white is my favourite) and if include other aspects of style that resonate with me (high contrast, structured, balanced, pattern play, etc.) nowadays, there is no colour I will exclude from my closet. I’ve been surprised to find mind blowing colour combinations that I never would have imagined before.
I am similar to you in that I do graphic design and I grew up around sewing, but never had the patience. I also hate shopping because I have specific colors and body shape things I want and nobody makes them. I moved to another state and got rid of my old sewing machine. I kept having tension issues and spent weeks trying to fix it. I just want a sewing machine that works. (Suggestions anyone?) Also I have found that as I've aged, I've gotten wider in the shoulders and have to alter everything now. I look best in a more fitted style, but I like seeing your problem solving and transparency on this front. Have you considered making your patterns using Illustrator or something like that? I'm tempted to try it myself.

When you were werking with the chartreuse fabric I thought: perhaps you can make something out of it for someone who would look awesome in that colour? Try bleaching the fabric samples first. Get rid of as much of the original color as possible, without degrading the fabric. Then, experiment with color!
This is so strange. A person sits by a blouse or football shirt with a perfect cut and doesn’t know how to make a new one with a perfect cut. Tip: take the ideal one from yourself and transfer it to the game. When sewing, the thread can be torn and directly transferred. Did you want to wear the sleeves just long enough?

So sleeve pieces are usually slightly bigger than the armscye (arm hole) they attach to, though not massively so. To fit it in you will need to gather it. (Not so it's visibly puffed-you're just easing it). Here's how:
Use a straight stitch with a long length and sew two parallel lines of stitching around the curved top of the sleeve piece, within the seam allowance but not so close to the cut edge that the fabric frays - about 5mm and 10mm in from the edge tends to work well.
Leave the end of the threads long and don't tie them as you'll be removing the stitch later.
Find the middle of the sleeve piece and pin or clip it to the top shoulder seam, bring careful not to get the threads in the pin or clip.
Pull gently on the top or bottom threads, (being careful not to pull them out or snap them) to 'bunch up' or gather the fabric until it's the same size as the armscye. Pin/clip as you go to fit it into the armscye, smoothing the gathers evenly. This takes some practice so take your time to avoid lumpy seams.
Sew the seam.
Remove the two long lines of stitching by pulling them out and then proceed with the rest of the sewing.
Did learn last week that some tape measures change (mine are prob older than you) so compare with a metal ruler. Recall a some people have gap in back of top and a fix in old Vogue book on fitting clothing . Thanks for the showing details as am trying to get self back to fixing front of arms of top made.

Colour analysis is controversial, but everybody seems to agree that what matters is the colour next to your face. I find that I can wear any colour (even the ones I used to fear) if I have a “good” colour that I always gravitate towards next to my face (white is my favourite) and if include other aspects of style that resonate with me (high contrast, structured, balanced, pattern play, etc.) nowadays, there is no colour I will exclude from my closet. I’ve been surprised to find mind blowing colour combinations that I never would have imagined before.

I am similar to you in that I do graphic design and I grew up around sewing, but never had the patience. I also hate shopping because I have specific colors and body shape things I want and nobody makes them. I moved to another state and got rid of my old sewing machine. I kept having tension issues and spent weeks trying to fix it. I just want a sewing machine that works. (Suggestions anyone?) Also I have found that as I've aged, I've gotten wider in the shoulders and have to alter everything now. I look best in a more fitted style, but I like seeing your problem solving and transparency on this front. Have you considered making your patterns using Illustrator or something like that? I'm tempted to try it myself.
Beautiful! Use a color grabbing sheet when you wash this to avoid sleeve colors bleeding onto the body. Sadly, Rit dies are not always 'permanent'.

When you were werking with the chartreuse fabric I thought: perhaps you can make something out of it for someone who would look awesome in that colour? Xyellow & green = blue, so to get the green to turn to any shade of blue you would have needed yellow dye

Try bleaching the fabric samples first. Get rid of as much of the original color as possible, without degrading the fabric. Then, experiment with color!

The chartreuse has too much yellow. There's no way you will get bluish shades from it. Yellow + blue = green
This is so strange. A person sits by a blouse or football shirt with a perfect cut and doesn’t know how to make a new one with a perfect cut. Tip: take the ideal one from yourself and transfer it to the game. When sewing, the thread can be torn and directly transferred. Did you want to wear the sleeves just long enough?
