5:28 is when the runner notices the ball being caught at the 3rd base. He had already set off when the ball was thrown/hit. He won't make it back to 3rd because it will be covered by the time he goes back, so his best action is trying to go for home and hope for the best. It is not a 0 IQ play, just an unfortonate situation and him trying to make the best out of it.
Not necessarily a smart move either. There were no outs, team down by 2. No reason to jump the gun. Would've most likely made it to home if the ball got past the 3rd baseman, and even if not, you still have 1st and 3rd no out

I think you're seeing the tape on his finger and angle his hand is in as if he's ready to throw something with his free hand, but if you look closely you can see him transfer the actual ball from his glove to his free hand directly after he makes the tag. Baserunner is definitely out.
