My vote is for Candlemass! Epic Doom all day! Also Blind Guardian are really good, but i prefer Candlemass, their first 4 albums are masterpiece of Metal!
I always enjoy Blind Guardian especially Hansi's stage presence. At first you think a teacher accidentally took the stage entrance but when he is performing he enchants the audience like an ancient wizard.
Doom Metal actually makes me happy. But then again, both Death and Black also gets me pretty cheered up... ...so it shouldn't be of any surprise when I say (well, write that) I lean a bit more towards Candlemass. Don't get me wrong, I think Blind Guardian has one of their best songs, if not the best, in their "Mirror Mirror". On the other hand, Candlemass are in their own way a form of extension of Black Sabbath. And Iommi & Co are, as you know by now, my household gods. Furthermore, Candlemass produced one of my top five favorite albums in 1989. Tales of Creation is still their best in my opinion, although they've made a couple of other really strong ones later as well - both with Messiah as well as with other fronting guys... Anyway, thanks humongously for a nice episode... and for refreshing some close to forgotten memories! Cheers! 🤘💚
Lovely to hear that you enjoyed the episode. I am curious to get more of your recommendations on Candlemass with the other vocalists. The first 3 albums are all top notch, but I have yet to listen to their albums after that. - Anamaria
My top 3 later Candlemass albums (in no particular order): "Candlemass" (from 2005, Messiah reapears), "Death Magic Doom" (2009), "Psalms for the Dead" (2012). Rob Lowe is the one using the voice on the later two works. Lowe is also the singer in another quite remarkable Doom orchestra, Solitude Aeturnus. Recommending them warmly, and this being one excellent track (the riff is to die for): ruclips.net/video/JyIKof1AEU4/видео.html. Cheers!💚
Love Blind Guardian but Candlemass definitely takes it for this battle. Nightfall, Ancient Dreams, and Tales of creation, three albums in a row in the late 80's lead by Marcolin are some of the best metal albums ever made. Glad you found them for this comparison!
As I mentioned in the vid, I am a Candlemass newbie so thanks a lot for the listening tips. Nightfall (in Middlearth) is also the name of the Blind Guardian album from where Mirror, Mirror comes. Maybe random connection, but interesting nonetheless. Do you happen to know what Marcolin is up to these days? I will add Nightfall and Tales of Creation to my current "to-listent to" albums. - Anamaria
Candlemass for me mainly because the singer, great range. Battle of the covers suggestion... Dream Theater V Age of Nemisis playing the maiden classic To tame a land. Everyone knows the mighty Dream Theater but the Hungerian band Age of Nemisis are, a band I discovered recently. The, singer is fantastic.
21:12 more doom metal? Sorcerer, from Sweden, is very good. They have that Candlemass/Tony Martin-era Black Sabbath vibe. Another favorite is Draconian, again from Sweden. Much much more gothic/dark, with male growls and angelic female vocals.
Woooowww guys!!! Of course, the one I like the most is Blind Guardian! I love your format, it is something new, congratulations! I hope to see many videos about Power metal 🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘
So glad that you found us! Our channel is dedicated to power metal and melodic epic metal in general. Which are your favorite bands (besides BG, of course)? We might have featured them already! - Anamaria
@@MetalAcademix thanks for answering! Apart from BG, I also like HELLOWEEN, IRON MAIDEN, MANOWAR, Gamma Ray, and of course the classics, for example DEEP PURPLE, Black Sabbath ..... among others! I hope to see you soon with new content! 🔥🤘
Awesome! We love the same bands, and we have them featured on the channel. Just to give you an example, check out this Deep Purple battle: ruclips.net/video/oQsLN2d6zAI/видео.html - Anamaria
Hail Manowarriors and all Metal Warriors! I vote for Candlemass - Mirror Mirror. P.S. Who can recognize this song: "Up with the roger, the vessel is close Cannons are loaded the weapons prepared Set up more sails the distance grows They try to escape but we shan't care" ?!
All right, BG's Mirror, Mirror is epic. And as an Tolkien fan I'm probably biased. I especially like Time stands still (at the Iron Hill) from that album, because it tells the story of Fingolfin - my favourite character from The Silmarillion. The Candlemass song is not my cup of tea. My preferences in this direction are Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride. If you want some non-Swedish Scandinavian Metal bands, check out for Finland: "Before the Dawn", "Ensiferum", "Ghost Brigade", "Insomnium", "Korpiklaani", "Mors Pricipium Est", "Sinamore", "Wolfheart" For Noway: "Einherjer", "Borknagar", "Dimmu Borgir", "Lumsk", "The Kovenant" And for the Feroe Islands: "Tyr" EDIT: Almost forgot "Battlelore" from Finland, especially for Tolkien fans.
Since you enjoyed Candlemass, may I recommend Solitude Aeturnus. Similar style of doom metal with a vocalist just as impressive (who actually sang for Candlemass as well some time after Marcolin left).
Unpopular opinion, but I think Candlemass' version is better in almost every way. Of course Blind Guardian is signing a tale (because that is what they do) that *contains* the Mirror, but Candlemass' song is *about* the mirror and nothing else. Marcolin is sometimes chilling in his notes - especially the end of the song is haunting - and the solo and all the instruments are their usual great level on would expect from Candlemass of that era. I think that if they had chosen instead to review the live version of BOTH songs that would have been more fair, instead of their funny videoclip. Candlemass live at 1990 and 2003 both contain "Mirror Mirror".
I have missed those live recordings, or maybe I thought the sound was not good enough? I agree, in any case, about comparing live to live version as a principle. And, yes, Candlemass with Marcolin is just amazing, cannot stop listening. Do you happen to know what happened to Marcolin after he left Candlemass? Just curious. - Anamaria
@@MetalAcademix He sang for Memento Mori if I remember correctly, had a few live appearances here and there ( e.g. you can find on youtube the song "Kali Yuga" live with Therion) and I think there is a mysterious project he has been working on for sometime, but no news of it yet as far as I know. Everyone says that Marcolin is hard to work with, and us, as listeners that can only witness the end-result, cannot really judge that. But I think that most people will agree that the Marcolin-era Candlemass end-result in terms of songs was just plain epic awesome. :)
Thank you for the extra information. Both Marcolin and Daniel H från Lost Horizon have such amazing voices but, since leaving the bands that made them well-known, have not really put their musical talents to use. Sometimes it is the chemistry of working together that needs to be in place to produce greatness. - Anamaria
Well, I think both are great. The darker style of Candlemass sounds pretty cool and it is a complete different melody in comparison with Blind Guardian's that is more closer to the heavy metal. Let's say that the only thing to critisize with Candlemass is equalization. I would have liked to listen the record as louder as Blind Guardian. I know that sounds are kind of wider in Doom, but for that reason sometimes, some of the records sound weaker in contrast. For now, I choose Blind Guardian and I would like to hear this doom melody re-mastered by Candlemass at the future if it would be possible. A suggestion between original/cover: Halloweed by thy name - Iron Maiden/Cradle of Filth Regards.
The less powerful sound of the Candlemass song can also be explained by the year in which it was created, 1988, and by the RUclips compression processing. - Anamaria
Didn't know the candlemass version, thanks for introducing me. Still, BG can't really be beat for me, its just such a great one. Even with this, probably the worst version of it on youtube, Hansi skipping many of the best notes :D
I totally love Blind Guardian. I think it's doing them some injustice to use the live version, as their true art is in the studio (and it's not really written live-oriented)... Still having a hard time getting into Candlemass, although I do like other doom bands - especially My Dying Bride. Anyway - why don't you try something by Veil of Secrets? They have Vibeke Stene (ex. Tristania) as the singer and are very much affected musically by Candlemass.
I agree with your thoughts about studio vs live recordings. The choice was primarily based on the availability of an official video (that was not hit by copyright). Candlemass had some other vocalists, so perhaps you can try some of their later albums like Psalms for the Dead from 2012? And thank you for the rec for Veil of Secrets, I have been recommended this band by the YT algorithm, but haven't listened to them yet. Will check them out! - Anamaria
Messiah Marcolin FTW. Can't compare though, one's doom, the other is speed, power metal.. Totally different style. Can't compare Painkiller by Judas Priest and Death..
Some good doom bands Is NOVEMBER'S DOOM,any thing by them ,MY DYING BRIDE is best doom band have violin player ,song is YOUR RIVER LIVE IN POLAND 1996 is a must thank you hope that helps

That's the first time I've heard the Candlemass song, it's very good.
But nothing beats Blind Guardian's Mirror Mirror :)
Honestly, I had forgotten how good "Miror Mirror" by CANDLEMASS was! Buuut the BLIND GUARDIAN version is incomparable. A battle of classics.
Candlemass with Messiah Marcolin was Swedens best band at the time in my opinion 🤘
The Cardigans
