This movie created the 12A rating in the UK It was considered too violent for a PG rating, but lots of children wanted to watch it. So the Film Ratings people created 12A purely so that they could.
I thought the UK already had a 12 rating and 12A was created for the movies while 12 was for home media releases (you know: videotapes, DVDs, downloads and streaming, etc). I need to rewatch that Cutting Edge episode about how the 2002 Spiderman movie brought about the 12A rating.
@@canaisyoung3601 At the time, the existing 12 rating meant that nobody under 12 was permitted to see the film in cinemas under any circumstances. The 12a rating meant that parents were allowed to make that decision for themselves by accompanying the child (a=accompanied), with the guidance that it might not be suitable for children under that age. For home media (there was only physical media at the time) it was probably still just rated 12 because someone under that age is not likely to be buying DVDs/VHS tapes and if they did the 12a would mean it would have to be purchased by an adult anyway.

"I missed the part where that's my problem." In every other movie, that would be a moment to cheer for the protagonist standing up for himself. But Spider-Man has to be better than that.
You could barely call him Spider-Man at that moment - he, himself didn't. And it was before Ben's death, t h e experience that truly formed the character of Spider-Man.
This was a huge period in movies for me personally, the early 2000s, because all of my childhood loves (I was born in 1965 and even before I could read I was looking at Spider-man comics!), the Marvel comics characters and Lord of the Rings were all coming to the big screen and, unlike the past efforts, were done extremely well. This is not my favorite Marvel movie by any stretch, but what I will say at the end when I saw it in the theater when it was released was that for the first time a movie actually looked and made me feel like I was when I was 5 years old reading these comics. So I think your “it’s so colorful” comment is related to this. This movie when I saw it made me feel exactly the same way I felt as a young child reading these comic books. Thank you and RIP Stan Lee!

Nothing beats the Sam Raimi Spiderman movies--so good. Also, interesting tidbit, the final fight between Spiderman and The Green Goblin was set and shot on the World Trade Center. The WTC was edited out in post production for obvious reasons.

For those of us that were around when this came out there will forever be a scene from this movie that we all know but was never put into the movie. The very first trailer for this movie came out just days before 9/11/2001. In the trailer there was a scene where Spiderman catches some robbers that were flying away in a helicopter. He caught them in a giant spiders web that he built between the twin towers. On 9/12 the trailer was pulled from all theaters as well as all of the movie posters that showed the same scene. You can find the trailer here on RUclips it was remastered and released in 2021.
30:35 Norman/Goblin thought that Spider-Man, not knowing it was Peter, had followed him to the apartment. It wasn’t until he saw the cut that he put the dots together and realized Peter was Spider-Man and that’s why he was showing up late
The bomb didn’t turn Spider-Man into a skeleton because it was just a bomb. He has multiple different types of pumpkin bombs that do different things..
I remember the spider man cartoon in the 70s, with Paul Soles doing the voice of spider man, the green goblin was a funny character as he always had interesting lines. "Spin the button, spin the boot, Open the door and give me the loot."
There are some differences between the film and the comics. For instance, Peter is 17/18 years old when he’s bitten by the spider in the film, whereas he was only 15 in the comics. This change was likely made because the filmmakers wanted to move Peter quickly beyond high school and into his post-high school life with his graduation. In fact, Peter’s high school years were only explored briefly in the comics, with his college era being what most readers grew up with and what influenced many directors. So they aged him up to get him closer to graduation. In the comics, MJ, Norman Osborn, and Harry Osborn didn’t appear until Peter started college, but this movie and some other adaptations bring them into his high school years. The Spectacular Spider-Man (2008), a fantastic animated series, focuses entirely on Peter’s high school life, with younger versions of these characters. The Ultimate Spider-Man comics, which started in 2000, also reimagined Peter’s story by focusing on him as a 15- or 16-year-old in high school and included MJ, Norman, Harry, and Gwen in that timeframe. For context, the Ultimate Universe, which began with Ultimate Spider-Man #1 (2000), was a modernized, reimagined continuity created to give new readers a fresh starting point without needing to catch up on decades of prior stories or history. It was also more "grounded" compared to the mainline Marvel Universe, offering a contemporary and realistic take on its characters and stories. Which is cool but when Galactus from the main Marvel Universe was transported into the Ultimate Universe... Well this just say his arrival posed a significant problem since the Ultimate Universe, being more grounded, had never encountered a villain of his scale and cosmic nature before. It's a unique take, closer to our own world in many ways. And finally, one of the biggest changes is how Spider-Man shoots his webs. In the comics, Peter doesn’t shoot webs from his body. Instead, he invented his own web-shooters-devices he designed to attach to his wrists. These use cartridges filled with a special web fluid he created, which can run out, requiring him to reload them from time to time. The web-shooters have a button on his palm that he activates by pressing it with two fingers, which is why he has his iconic hand motion. However, in the Sam Rami Spider-Man films, Peter has organic web shooters, producing webs from within his body that fire directly from his wrists. Since this was the first big-budget Spider-Man movie, it led many people to believe that Spider-Man in the comics, and in most other versions, also has organic web shooters. But that’s not the case at all. In most renditions, his web-shooters are always a product of his own genius, created by Peter Parker himself along with the web fluid.
There were two reasons for the organic web-shooters in these movies. First, Sam Raimi just thought it was unrealistic that a high school kid could independently create a beyond-state-of-the-art polymer substance for the web fluid. And second, he wanted the emergence of Peter Parker's spider-powers to stand as a metaphor for the process of puberty, with a growing boy's body going through odd changes and, um, strange, sticky fluids oozing out. You know what I mean.
Each actor through the 3 different series have their moments. Each one brings something a little different and accentuates different characteristics and qualities of Spiderman.
lol @39:23 mark when Dawn realizes she's been sucked into Marvel geekdom. And for the one problem that you found in the movie, remember that it takes place in America and we don't have free healthcare. A trip to the ER for a spider bite can be costly. 🤣🤨💔
I think the reason Norman Osborn's company was making the suit and glider is that the military wanted their own version of Iron-man's suit and contracted several companies to try and make something close. And the formula he developed was an attempt to make their own version of the super soldier serum that created Captain America.
1. The nex tmovie is 'Spider-Man 2', then 'Spider-Man 3', then the Andrew Garfield series which starts with 'Amazing Spider-Man', then 'Amazing Spider-Man 2'. Then it hits the MCU with 'Spider-Man Homecoming', etc. 2. The reason Peter didn't tell MJ he loved her is because the people close to him are the ones who are most in danger due to him being Spider-Man. We saw in this film, if MJ was actually his full-time girlfriend, she'd constantly be in danger. I'm only saying this because this is a major point in the comics and the upcoming movies: Spider-Man can't be with people, because they'd be in danger.
This film came out in 2002. You may remember that in September of the previous year, on the eleventh of that month, a tragic and historically significant event occurred. As Spiderman is famously set in New York City, many of the promotional posters and trailers (and scenes in the film) featured the Twin Towers. After the Sep 11, 2001 attack that took them down, and the national mourning that took place in the aftermath of that attack, those images were quickly removed, some scenes re-shot, and the release date was pushed back. Scenes like 35:05 "When you mess with one of us, you mess with all of us!" showed the citizens of New York City banding together in solidarity against an evil foe. This was one of the first really big films to be released post- 9/11, and being set in N.Y. with one of its most famous fictional citizens, was really powerful for a lot of movie-goers of that generation.
The scene where Peter catches MJ's tray, and the food falls perfectly onto it was physically done. It took 156 takes, with Maguire's hand "glued" to the tray.
This movie came out 8 months after the 9/11 attacks so that’s why the line was in that about being a New Yorker and if you mess with one of us you mess with all of us.
Btw, organic webs aren’t the norm for Spider Man. Most of the time he makes mechanical web shooters with hand made web fluid. But the Raimi movies made organic webs much more well known
I have loved Spider-Man ever since I was a child. All the movies are great though they take different approaches. Spider-Man 2 may be favorite one, I look forward to your reaction.
Thrilled that your kids are watching a show as old as 'Spidey and his Amazing Friends' lol. Most of the questions that you're asking get revealed in convoluted comic book plots... but I really don't feel like going there right now 😂
Norman Osborne played by Willem Dafoe was such an amazing character. The insanity of the split personality was both heartbreaking and captivating at the same time. He wasn't a true villain just like the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde story. He became a victim of his own overblown ego and desperation to save his company.
He "rejected" her in the end because he knows she would always be in danger if she was his girlfriend. After all, that's why Green Goblin went after her.
In Spider-Man 2 movie he throws away his Spider-Man suit away and became no more Spider-Man. That is comic Amazing Spider-Man 50 issue. I bought it at a local shop years ago. It is the first appearance of the villain Kingpin which is my favorite villain. I got my comic signed by Vincent Dn’Ofrio last year at a convention in Nashville TN. He plays Kingpin in the show Daredevil that used to be on Netflix. Now they are making Daredevil Born Again with some of the cast back again. I met Charlie Cox and Debra Ann Woll. All 3 actors were so kind to meet.
I'm so happy that you're watching the Marvel movies in order, that's fantastic! Some are better than others, some are best movie ever times two and some are not!
It speaks a lot about J. Jonah Jameson's character that when threatened he would protect the identity of his new photographer. Despite what a grouch and rude person he can be, Jameson is a good person deep down. Also Norman Osborne (Green Goblin) suffers from insanity, probably schizophrenia. That's why Norman doesn't believe he killed anyone because he technically didn't. The Green Goblin personality took over periodically throughout the movie and committed those atrocities until he fully took control of Norman's mind. It's amazing how William Dafoe plays the two personalities, especially simultaneously in that mirror scene.
There is a story in the comics where Peter does become more and more spider, till instead of being Spider-Man, he becomes the Man-Spider. He needs a serum to turn him back into something resembling a human again. You don't want to see that happen to Peter Parker. No matter what the variation in different stories or even universes, the Spider-Man origin story always involved tragedy. Its part of who Spider-Man is.
30:26 "You're bleeding." Every crime fighter is well advised to learn a little first aid. Especially something as basic as cleaning and dressing a wound.
The 3 Toby McQuire Spiderman movies are directed by Sam Rami who did the Evil Dead movies. This the main actor from those movies has cameos in the 3 Spiderman movies, as he does in nearly all Sam Rami movies. Also Uncle Ben's car is the same car from Evil Dead movies, it's Sam Rami s car.
Yeah, getting into the MCU is a bit of a commitment but so so worth it. The stories are a lot of fun. Many of the characters are so much fun. Just watch it in release order like everyone else even tho some may encourage you to watch it chronologically (chronologically is best for a second viewing). I grew up reading comics and was constantly coming across fantastic stories that I thought would look good on the big screen. But the tech in Hollywood at the time wasn't good enough. Now it is and Marvel has done a great job with it. Enjoy.

@@canaisyoung3601 Batman (1989) was the first cinema release to be rated 12 in the UK, but was rated 15 when released on home video
@@sonofliberty1so I guess me watching robcop Halloween nightmare on elm street and the rest of the classic as a kid they was definitely not for kids lol but my parents didn’t care and I never had nightmares probably because I knew it wasn’t real
@@MJ-420. Yeah, of course the ratings only really apply in an enforceable sense at cinemas, shops and rental places. After the purchase or rental has been made for home media then ratings are only really advisory. I was also allowed to watch a lot of older-rated things at home at a young age but then not allowed to watch others because at home your parents can make that decision for themselves.
Poor Uncle Bob. You won't be forgotten.
Uncle Bob 😂😂😂
And don't forget his sage advice: "With great power, comes a high electric bill."
I love how the police just let Uncle Bob lay there and bleed versus rendering any kind of first aid 😂
Of the three Spider-Man's, Dawn is definitely the Tobey Maguire of them.
To You, is Tobey the best SPIDERMAN, OK SPIDERMAN or is he the WORST SPIDERMAN. That way we have a Baseline to go off of. LOL
Welcome to America where we would rather sleep off a deadly spider bite then pay the costs of going to the hospital lolol
And welcome to Europe where we do the same just because we're stubborn.
Not just spider bites, but other injuries as well. I dislocated my shoulder as a teen, and accidentally popped it back in, but my mother still made me go to the hospital. I've dislocated my shoulder 8 times since, but never gone to the hospital after the 1st time. Just popped it back in and kept working. Got food stuck in my throat twice. 1st time my boss made me go to the hospital, after i went to bed, got up the next morning and went to work. 2nd time my wife made me go, when I couldn't get it down myself.
@@wolf9walker Someone is a Lethal Weapon fan without saying they are a Lethal Weapon fan ... lol ~ I do the same with thumb dislocations, I just pop it back and ice it up when I get back home. Fun share!
@wolf9walker If you've dislocated your shoulder nine times, somebody needs to tell you you're doing something very, very wrong. Stop it. No, really, stop it!
Welcome to America, one of the few western nations properly stocked on anti-venom compared to Europe because of the number of venomous animals here.
"He's got such a cool mouth"
Yeah, I hear that a lot...
It took Toby Maguire 156 takes to catch all the food on the tray perfectly.
Nothing beats the Sam Raimi Spiderman movies--so good. Also, interesting tidbit, the final fight between Spiderman and The Green Goblin was set and shot on the World Trade Center. The WTC was edited out in post production for obvious reasons.
FYI, Tobey actually caught all those items on this tray. @8:23. It took 156 takes for him to catch it all.
I still don't believe that story no matter how many people say it I'll need to see the other 155 takes to prove it I don't think the studio would have approved that much wasted film/money
The reason scientists test experiments on themselves is because there are laws against testing on others. There are lots of stringent safety tests before you can begin human testing.
Those laws won't stop you from testing on yourself though.
👍🙂❤
Changing these laws would help stop a lot of Super Villian "nonsense".
👍🙂❤
For those of us that were around when this came out there will forever be a scene from this movie that we all know but was never put into the movie. The very first trailer for this movie came out just days before 9/11/2001. In the trailer there was a scene where Spiderman catches some robbers that were flying away in a helicopter. He caught them in a giant spiders web that he built between the twin towers. On 9/12 the trailer was pulled from all theaters as well as all of the movie posters that showed the same scene. You can find the trailer here on RUclips it was remastered and released in 2021.
Spiderman doesn't have eight legs to wrap up the Goblin. 😅
Happy Days and Laverne & Shirley had me loving crossovers from an early age.
NICE! And related (?) The Andy Griffith Show and Gomer Pyle U S.M.C. And of course Petticoat Junction and Green Acres!! ☮️
Rip Uncle Ben. You would have loved the Falkirk Wheel x
30:35 Norman/Goblin thought that Spider-Man, not knowing it was Peter, had followed him to the apartment. It wasn’t until he saw the cut that he put the dots together and realized Peter was Spider-Man and that’s why he was showing up late
This is my favorite of the Spider-man films. Kirsten Dunst's MJ can't be topped.
"I've Tasted That Tongue Before!" was the name of an adult film I directed 😛
Fun fact: the writer and director of this movie wrote and directed the Evil Dead series. Bruce Campbell plays the wrestling announcer
Women LOVED the upside down kiss scene.
But it was absolutely miserable for Tobey Maguire to film, haha, having to be upside down for so long especially.
Upside down with water dripping down his face - essentially being waterboarded. Actual torture.
Women?? Moreso men...
Well, it did win him the MTV Movie Award for Best Kiss.
This is the best reaction channel on RUclips 🤘
WORD!
"Spin the button, spin the boot,
Open the door and give me the loot."
Great reaction! Think you gonna love spiderman 2!
Spider Man 2 with Doc Oc is my favorite Marvel movie
But wait! They don’t know that they know that we know! LOL! Love your reactions!
Hero´s think that being with the people they love they´re in danger if the villian knows them all, that´s why he said no to her, simple.
The director of these early Spider-Man movies, Sam Raimi, you're familiar with from the "Evil Dead" flicks.
13:29--The "bone saw" character was WWF wrestling star macho man randy savage.
Very early in his career he went by the name "the spider".
He loves her and doesn't want to put her in constant danger. That's why he said he'd always be her friend.
lol @39:23 mark when Dawn realizes she's been sucked into Marvel geekdom.
Peter literally says #2 when he's looking at Uncle Ben's grave
And he is just a teen with no resources or support - unlike e.g. Tony Stark who can provide for and protect Pepper Potts.
"Proper Snog Kiss" was the name of my band in college! 😮
I haven’t watched this entire movie in 20 years. I forgot about that kiss, it was proper. 😊👏🥰 Best accent ever. I mean movie. 😆👽
7:00 he's literally Amazing
The freaky-dee-key upside-down Spiderman Kiss.
Firestar and Iceman are the Amazing Friends 🤘
Yes! Thank you Dawn, i needed this today❤
The Spider-Man with organic spinnerettes is usually Miguel O'Hara, aka Spider-Man 2099.
"hand made web fluid"
Yeah, we know what that means.
@@tigerburn81It’s literally artificial webbing, what are _you_ implying?
Dawn in her “Em Jeh” look.
Spider-man is the best superhero to me by far. He's just a kid and makes kid mistakes sometimes, but he is just the best one for me.
I totally forgot about this orange Scottish girl that wears tons of make up. Blast from the past!
"Why doesn't he look happy" - he's at a funeral 😂
If you watch the 60’s cartoons with green goblin he laughs and sounds exactly like William Defoe. He played the exact goblin
My friend was an extra in this movie. He said there were a lot of spidey stunt men in the costume trying to pick up ladies
I have loved Spider-Man ever since I was a child. All the movies are great though they take different approaches. Spider-Man 2 may be favorite one, I look forward to your reaction.
Thrilled that your kids are watching a show as old as 'Spidey and his Amazing Friends' lol.
Most of the questions that you're asking get revealed in convoluted comic book plots... but I really don't feel like going there right now 😂
Flash is just a nickname because he's quick on the football field, his real name is Eugene.
Saw it in the cinema, or theater. And I was amazed. Closest depiction of web slinger. Brilliant questions. Many thanks. Peace
He "rejected" her in the end because he knows she would always be in danger if she was his girlfriend. After all, that's why Green Goblin went after her.
40:20 Don't ever change, Dawn 😂
Peter Parker worked for the Daily Bugle, his editor was J. Jonah Jameson, in essence his boss who hated Spider Man.
Great reaction. I kinda hate the idea it's not Spider-Man 2 that's next on your list. Can't wait 😂
30:26 "You're bleeding."
Every crime fighter is well advised to learn a little first aid. Especially something as basic as cleaning and dressing a wound.
The original series of flicks and the very best IMHO.
I love how at about 28:56 you sounded like you’d never seen slow motion before in your life lol.
I've been bitten by a spider several times. The bite area looked like a mosquito bite, and I felt itchy, like something was crawling all over me.
Spiderman believes anyone he loves will be in danger.
21:05 - I'm pretty sure MJ is wearing white stockings.
i read this as it was dawn wearing them and was REALLY looking forward to that moment 😂
Light pink
Yeah, getting into the MCU is a bit of a commitment but so so worth it. The stories are a lot of fun. Many of the characters are so much fun. Just watch it in release order like everyone else even tho some may encourage you to watch it chronologically (chronologically is best for a second viewing). I grew up reading comics and was constantly coming across fantastic stories that I thought would look good on the big screen. But the tech in Hollywood at the time wasn't good enough. Now it is and Marvel has done a great job with it. Enjoy.
🕷 Kirsten Dunst (M.J.) is normally blonde. Her hair was dyed red for this role. She and Tobey MaGuire were both around 20 years old when this film came out. If you want to see them when they actually were high school age, check her out in "Small Soldiers" (1998) and him in "Pleasantville" (also 1998). 😉👍
