I remember the day I heard he had been killed. I fell to my knees. I was almost embarrassed that I cared so much. I live in Australia and went to his concert, it was everything I thought it would be. I still feel a physical pain every time I think of him. I have never felt this way about any other “public” figure. But I guess we all felt we knew him. He was generous in every way. Vale Harry Chapin.

I can relate to how you felt, Ann. I also was devastated. I've never before or since felt that way about the passing of a public figure. His lyrics so resonated with me.

It's been 39 years but I, too, vividly remember that day as well. Another day 'the music died'. In Harry's relatively short time on earth, he certainly "prove(d) before he died what one man's life could be worth", "what would happen to this world". Harry, you made such positive impacts on this world, on all of us; we miss you...

@Chris Brandt, I'm only 14 and I love Harry Chapin's pieces. I've been listening to them since I was 7 and he is still my favorite.

This excerpt just about brought tears of joy to myself . Though I cuts off at the end of Shooting Star , all persons contributing to Harry's music just were out standing doing the scores of all as home runs . Long live the master story teller and anyone else that appreciates Harry Chapin's legacy .

I've seen his shows on RUclips with a million. This has a low number bc it's a tribute concert in 1987 & none of the singers except Bruce are well known. It's 1987, should've had Prince, Billy Idol, Bowie, Michael Jackson, Cars cover his work, not these unknowns

Unknown to whom? The music of Pete Seeger, Judy Collins, Richie Havens will be sung and played long after Prince and Michael Jackson are forgotten.

David Bowie was a talented man - but not really the same style..

the bleeding obvious has just occurred to me - Harry was a fecking folk singer - all about unknown musicians and the common man - not celebrity..

where's the rest of it? I'm sure it was more than a half hour, because it isn't even halfway through the CD that I have in my collection. And I know that wasn't the entirety of the show either.

@@rosslindgren4199 I was at this show. They’re only showing highlights. The Springsteen excerpt at the beginning of this was only a small clipped version of his 2 stories and song performance

I was a charter member of his fan club and got the 1st and only copy of his news and announcements, called Chapinfo. It died as soon as he did. Still because I was charter member I was a sent an invitation to see the tribute concert. I just had to pay my plane fare and that would have been all I needed to be seated inside (hopefully around the cheap seats.) For whatever reason, it did not work out for me. I was too scared to spend the necessary capital to be at the gathering. BIGGEST MISTAKE OF MY LIFE. But...DAMN it was so DAMN good when it came out on video. They cut out Deborah Hall singing "When I look Up" but it's available on RUclips. And when he son laid the Congressional Gold Metal on the empty stand by Harry's guitar...could anybody hold back the tears? I knew I couldn't.
