    if you're worried about your junior cert results, you could use it to your advantage in your personal statement. talk about how you improved your ethic in fifth year and now you get really good grades and the improvement has prepared you for university and work!

  • @Lia-ht5kn
    @Lia-ht5kn 5 лет назад +31

    I finished my leaving cert this year and got an offer from King’s College London ( I was rejected by Imperial and UCL)
    Just bear in mind that applications in them two universities are very very competitive and you’d more than likely have to go over there for an interview ( for imperial)
    Your referee has to be a teacher that’s very close to you and is familiar with your achievements as universities could ring them to ask further questions
    I doubt you need to include your junior cert results ( I didn’t because I never did the junior cert anyway) and you also don’t need to include employment referee ( except you’ve have a job)
    You need to check with immigration or something for your status (UK/EU or international) if you qualify as an EU student, you pay £9250 exc accommodation and you can always get a loan for that or even a scholarship if you’re lucky, if you’re international then you have to pay that ridiculous £20000+
    As for your personal statement, you have to express yourself and your intense passion for the course but you have to keep it concise as well. You want to start off with a brief explanation of your driving force to apply for the course and how passionate you are about certain subjects that are relevant to the course, then you can talk about academic achievements relating to the course or generally and also experience in the field of you have any, then leadership positions and volunteer work, hobbies, skillset, attributes etc, then round off with what you will bring to the university and what you want to gain out of it and why you want to study in the university or the UK. ( my sister’s friend from imperial gave me these tips and proofread mine so it was pretty good)
    P.S: when you think about it, you’ll end up paying almost £16000 per year ( accommodation is usually in or around £6000 especially in London) and honestly, a lot of people often say it’s not worth the money. You can equally go to trinity college which is nearly as prestigious and basically for free (if you get the susi grant) so you want to really weigh your options.
    I’m not trying to discourage you at all though, you’ll probably get 625 points and end up in Oxford or Cambridge university lol

    I was in your seat this time last year!
    My tips from experience:
    1. Try and send your statement off early, it takes so much stress off of your back and universities are more likely to take more time to read your statement carefully and may respond faster! My dream university, which I leave for in less than two weeks, replied and gave me in offer the day after I applied!
    2. TBH GCSEs (except English and math) really don’t matter unless you’re applying to oxford and Cambridge, but check your uni entrance requirements, in case GCSEs are part of your offer, but the most important part is the grades they want (what the Irish equivalent to A levels are)
    3. The statement REALLY does count! Sorry if that’s stressful, but it counts so so so much. I missed my A level grades on results day, and my firm uni took a look at my statement and still gave me an offer. I know your teachers are banging on about how important it is, but they are right!
    Good luck! Do your best!

    From watching your vids I can see that you are good at talking in front of a camera. So maybe make a video talking about why u want to do computer science and why should they accept u and then u can look back at the video and try to put it into words. But the most important thing is don't stress and stay positive👍

    I see no one has said anything re: maintnance loan and it’s actually soo doable without working full time while at uni!!!!
    If you’re an EU student you can get it if you work in the UK for 3 months before (or during too I think?) the start of your course!! You need to be considered a ’migrant worker’! I personally didn’t do it but I know of lots of people who did and who got the loans! Maybe worth looking into?
    good luck!!

  • @JillYva

    Good luck with your application, in terms of personal statement advice I was told (you can take it or leave it) by my teachers was its less of what you are academically and more of what you are as a person its 4'000 characters of why the course/uni should accept you. Your extracurricular, your higher education has to be worded to relate to the course this shows you did your research into the course content.
    General structure:
    Intro -who you are why you want to do the course like your inspiration to do it
    Higher education related to course
    Work Experience that may relate to course
    Extracurricular - (tbh mine had nothing to do with my course but its more on skills you learn ie public speaking, management etc)
    Summary- Closing remark
    Good Luck and tbf you started your application a good time you have quite a while i remember first day back september everyone had to submit a draft within a week (also you're gonna go have alot of drafts on word around 5+ it helps it alot of people read it too for opinions etc)
    Wish you the best :)

      I’m Irish and was planning on going to Cambridge. I studied for the STEP exams and all😭😭. I can’t go anymore cuz of da $$.
      Also since the UK pulled out of the EU-UK agreement everyone here has been talking about a united ireland. If there’s no deal a hard border will be put up. A hard border will result in war. A United ireland will result in war. It doesn’t matter anymore which you vote for. My boyfriend is northern Irish and said he’d vote for a United ireland.
      Also ireland isn’t a very rich country. We pay 45% of all EU debt. We have more national debt per capita than Greece. We’re borrowing even more for COVID-19 for Covid.
      Our trade to Europe passes through the UK. The majority of our exports are with the UK. If that trade process slows down even slightly, I’m not sure how well we’ll be able to handle it.
      I don’t know a single Irish person that supports Brexit because it is awful for us in every way. We are starting to lessen our trade with the UK but we’re still very dependent on Them.

    Ah I’m applying tomorrow (early Oxbridge deadline) and I’ve spent four months writing my PS! For the reference definitely has to be a teacher, you don’t necessarily have to know them but maybe write them an email with stuff you’d like them to include? With the PS, show you’ve made the effort to study around your subject. Analyse books, show achievements you’ve made, what extracurricular hobbies you have that show eg. Teamwork, communication skills, discipline etc. You don’t definitely need to know what you want to do in ten years, you just need to know you definitely want to apply for this course right now. You’re right the application is so stressful (trust me try applying to oxford it’s way worse). Last point, your hair is so pretty!!! x

  • @laizzarvl8663
    @laizzarvl8663 5 лет назад +1

    7:11 speak about this in your personal statement!
    A few tips as I went throught the same process last year :
    First for the study fee : if you're too scared to spend 10k per year on university, you can try to go to Scotland, their educational system is the same, but it is way cheaper and you can get a scholarship that pays your entire fee off pretty easily (it's called SAAS , it's for EU students)
    If you feel like your grades make you look bad try to give the best you can in your personal statement, a nice reference letter ad high predicted grades would also be really helpful in your case.
    Show them that you are really motivated! (of course)
    Writing your personal statement might seem really tricky at first, it will take you many many tries before you write something that you feel is good.
    I advise you to read A LOT of successful personal statements (I know you wouldn't do it but NEVER copy someone's PS, even just a sentence, they have algorithms checking on that)
    And you can find videos on youtube of uni teachers explaining how to write a good PS, and what commun mistakes you should avoid.
    If you have any questions I'd be happy to help :)

    Just got into uni through clearing, plan well. The minute you get your uk bank set up now. I'm a nursing course you need a police certificate from your garda superintendent to fill out your dbs requirement. I'm applying through student loan ( the student loan company not a bank) but I also have to take out a loan for my accommodation that already 6k so from my first year alone I'll be in debt 15k yay. I haven't even factored in living costs so yeah I'm missing all of my welcome week cause I'm so behind on documentation cause a lot of schools don't know the equivalent. Also it's based on your predicted grade which your guidance counselor sets and yes if you go for any medical field you need to go to interviews not an option. Get a reference from your principal easy .

    Hi, you won’t have access to a maintenance grant i don’t think, but you will have access to a loan (i’m fairly certain). I did not have the best AS results but I did way better in my A levels and i’m doing Law now! I got offers from all my universities, three of them unconditional. The personal statement can really make your application stand out. I don’t think computer science needs an interview and for reference, you can use a teacher, family friend, or principal. Look into the netherlands, their uni’s are better than trinity/fancy english uni’s and you need H4’s to get in. Most courses are taught through english. Theres loads of info on Eunicas and fees are so much cheaper (€1000 in the 1st year) and €2000 for the other years. Don’t close yourself off to this idea that the UK is the only/best option!!

    I'm sure you already know this, but Imperial for comp sci requires STEP, which is incredibly hard (for me at least), for English students at least no idea about Irish students. In terms of GCSEs /Junior cert grades I managed to get an interview at imperial with very meh GCSEs so please don't worry! But please do consider universities outside of London if you're concerned about money aha. btw at soton for comp sci so any questions about comp sci's application process please ask :)

    • @jonathanlam4994
      @jonathanlam4994 5 лет назад

      also my personal statement went
      Introduction- explain why you want to do comp sci, I think for comp sci you should specify why comp sci and not software engineering
      Subjects- How do they relate to computer science, further reading that links both your subjects to it, summer programs you may have done, projects. (as an a level student this was just 3/4 paragraphs though)
      Work experience- This is where you can link into industry
      Volunteering and extracurriculars- Talk about "soft skills" they've given you
      Conclusion- Why uni? why not learn yourself as comp sci is really a subject you can do yourself.

    Not to get you more stressed but brexit is set for the end of October, if everything goes into plan it might be a problem for next year already. Just keep yourself really informed with how's going... Quite a mess with all this brexit thing... However, if you wanna study outside of Ireland do not restrain yourself to London and the UK, maybe look up for Scotland too (less expensive) and the rest of Europe has many courses completely in English. If you want some more advice or some help just write to me, I literally just had your same experience last year!
    From a fellow desperate European 🤦🌸

    You dont actually pay the money to go to university, its not an actual 'debt' like people (mostly politicians) make it out to be. You never even see that money, it goes straight from the government to the university. You only ever have to start paying it back if you start earning more than 28 grand a year, and even then its only a tiny percentage of your earning every month. Dont let the idea 'student debt' put you off going to university.
    Also a university will either give you a conditonal or unconditional offer. Conditional meaning you have to get the grades. Unconditional means you've been guaranteed a place in that university.
    Your personal statement has a maximum limit of 4,000 characters, aim for 3500.

    • @valann9739
      @valann9739 5 лет назад +2

      Every country is different, in Ireland we do 7 or 8 subjects at leaving cert level so we obviously do them a lot more in depth and more detailed than if we were to study 16. In England they only have 3 or 4 for a levels but they are a lot more difficult compared to our subjects

    I’m applying to Uni in the uk for 2020 entry and I’m a EU student like you, so I’ll apply for a tuition fee loan. My mom will only be able to pay for my accommodation in those three years, do you think I will manage to pay my living costs with a part-time job?
    Everyone on internet says it is impossible and that it’s so hard to find a job as a student...and I’m worried.
    I was calm till I started asking for opinions on forums and everyone told me It was almost impossible...

      Dont worry about finding a job at all! All of my cousins who’ve gone to uni (they’ve gone all over the uk) have found jobs really easily. My cousin started in edinburgh a couple of weeks ago and she got a job at a cafe in a week, most uni towns make it easier for students to get jobs
