- Am I at Risk From Ransomware
Ransomware is on the rise and with this crypto ransomware being so aggressive and in encrypting all your data and holding you to ransom for a fee to release your data is a nightmare for home users and businesses.
These malicious malware can infected a computer and bring a business to its knees. Anti-Virus companies are working hard to find a way to protect people and their customers from being hit by ransomware.
But beware of software companies claiming you are protected, never let your guard down and make regular backups of your data and keep it in a safe place away from the computer. Having a computer image of your system and backup of your data is the only sure way of defeating ransomware.
The only inconvenience is reinstalling your operating system, but I see this as a small price to pay, it’s better than getting hit by ransomware and having all your data encrypted and having no way of recovering that data.
Now there is companies that are releasing ransomware protection software, but like I said nothing gives your 100% protection against Crypto-Ransomware like CTB-Locker, Locky and TeslaCrypt, File Locker, Torrent Locker, Cryptolocker, Cryptowall, MBR Ransomware, Petya and many others.
Yes this software is a step I the right direction, but it’s the wrong message we should be sending out to people, relying on software is not the answer to the problem, cyber criminals will find a way to bypass your software and infected your system with Cypto-Ransomware.
So in this video I will be testing out Bitdefender Anti Ransomware, this video is for education purposes and to show you how good or bad the software is that I am testing.
Stopping ransomware is not easy and there is always a chance things can go wrong. Never play with ransomware on your personal computer, these tests are done in a virtual lab setup.
If you wish to use Bitdefender Anti Ransomware, you can download it from there website below

ransomware protector that cant protect against ransomware? oh dont even get me started on this...
Sandboxie can protect you from ransomware. I refer you to your review of June 4, 2014 «How to Avoid Malware». I am using it since July 2004 when it was originally created by Ronen Tzur and never had any virus or malware of any sort.
+Luc L Yeah, best way is to use a old computer specially designed for testing malware, you can pick one on on ebay for £10
Brian, have you tested the Malwarebytes version of the Anti-Rasomware? I'm wondering if it performs better than the BitDefender version.
+J.D. Schriber I have tested and made a video.
The Bitdefender Anti-Ransomware tool featured on this video protects you "only" against a few specific types of ransomware, if you want full ransomware protection against all known and unknown ransomware you need to get at least Bitdefender Anti-virus Plus 2016, it has a specific module to protect you against present and future threats. Not saying this is not a great tool, but keep that in mind.
Or switch to Linux! Linux is immune to almost all ransomware!
couldn't windows just detect if files start getting encrypted and then notifys the user couldn't they take action against it...
Even if it would, the viruses would weaken your system before encrypting
indeed, its a great vid Britec!!
the best solution I have found is that, just shut down the computer, pull out the HD and connect it to another healthy virus free computer. you van copy your data to new computer and it would not be encrypted any more. than wipe the drive and install a new OS and restore the data. the key point is when you turn the infected computer ON, it makes the data encrypted. please make a video on this so that people get the benifits. thx
+T Raza Thanks for sharing.
I think to protect your files you can create one text file with a long text and have the same text on the paper. When the file get encrypted you can retrive the key using some calculations with encrypted data and original data.
5:26 I watched the video to here and im styill watching but do you read what types in the log? at the newest note?
-Could nor add Locky Protection hmmmm
when I seen the title i was like nope, I thought this because Ransome ware is downloaded manually, so it would be more like 39% protection
What is quite surprising is why would Bitdefender release a tool such as this if in fact it doesn't detect the ransomware it says it detects. Obviously from the tests you ran Brian, it didn't pick up 2 out of the 3 they claim, but wouldn't they have done these same tests in their labs.
You were able to expose the flaws in their program in under 15 min. It's bizarre, but this is tech and since when did technology behave logically??
It would be interesting to see what Bitdefender's comeback would be to this video.
Great work nevertheless Brian, appreciate your vids mate!!
Kaspersky antiransomware tool for home is quite good. Definitely a alternative.
Thanks brian :-D
I would say bit defender is a bit naff at the moment.
It needs to be monitoring the picture/documents directorys and only allow access if the user is actually got a window open in that directory, there has to be a way to detect that.
The ntfs directory security permissions for those directorys could be set by bit defender so its the middle man.
It needs a middle man to allow access, no matter how its done.
+zx8401ztv Yeah I was not that happy with the results
+Nico El Chicano
ive allways thought a good firewall (not windows one) setup to be tighter than cats arse is a good way to stop most problems.
Although it may stop windows too, it does act like a virus/malware at times lol :-D
very interesting great video
+Manny Roman Thanks manny
Yep, the best way to avoid all those Ransomware and such is to not click on Ads, do not click on links or images inside e-mails from people you don't know especially from mails in the spam folder, do not accept when a page suggests you to install some kind of application because you (supposedly) need it to view the page properly (that's just bullshit). Long story short, always be vigilant when surfing the internet.
But what if you Encrypt and put password protect yourself, can malware do them something? Like overwrite own encryption
+Eemu zi Well I think the malware will just encrypt your encrypted data, so if you want to recover your encrypted data, you first need the key from the malwaresender to decrypt it and after that you can decrypt the data with your own key to finally get the readable data. So encrypting the data yourself really doesn't give you any advantages in this case sadly.
It will work if you change file extensions to something that the malware won't recognize. But then it will be very inconvenient to use your system. So I wouldn't recommend it. But it will work in practice.
I use app guard and i have it set to protect all of my personal files. I also have Zemana A.M. (I was a beta tester)
Would the Premium (Realtime) Version of Malwarebytes prevent these from running in the first place? I does detect them when you ran it on the EXEs.
it removes malicious files automatically
Brian, thanks again for another great video.
Will Malware Bites stop Ransomware if its run before the virus is activated?
+Gary Butler Malwarebites Anti Ransomware won't stop all ransomware
how did you restore your system before the ransomware and have you found a way to protect against petya and or remove petya?
Where do you find these sample files.
Great video Brian, at this rate it's not going to be long before it would be better to just bite the bullet and run your browser in a VM.
+Sid Cannon Yeah its getting bad.
+Sid Cannon how exactly would you set up your computer to be able to do that?
craterface12 Using Virtual Box, it's free VM software. Then you create a VM and it's like running Windows on top of Windows, and using the snapshot feature you can restore your VM to a squeaky clean state with just a few clicks. Plus what happens in the VM stays in the VM, so your host PC doesn't get touched. Well that's my understanding of it. You will need a decent amount of RAM though.
Hi Brian, Don't know if this has been done already but could you test these ransomware against Sandboxie?
Hey Britec! This title makes me bad about your stuff so by the title I would say that you are in trouble...... So yeah.... I really enjoy your videos and also I want to know what virtual program you are using for like the videos that yiu show us how to remove trojans etc soo..... Yeah...... Ehm...... Have a nice day!
Taem Anonymous Well its true
Taem Anonymous ya
best method against ransomware is lots o back-ups indeed
+Smoking Crop Yeah for sure.
yep we all are I've had jstag UK ad ransomware try to install itself on both my desktops it appears as a java applet be wary of it do not install
I don't get it. Why didn't malwarebytes resolv the viruses, once it has succesfully marked them as malware?
You need to remove them with the blue "remove" button :)
+byKongo Ahh ok. I have never used it before. So It doesn't have scanning on the fly like real Antivirus.
Only the pro version :)
+byKongo that's great. So malwarebytes is the way to go :-).
Yeah definitifely
Off Topic , how you know that all your programs / apps are up to date ?
brilliant stuff sir cheers
+Kaito .Link Glad you liked it.
Will someone please tell me if you clone your drive can you beat all ransomware.
Humm they should add logs or popup when its blocked something or suspects something!
+thingyee1118 There is a log, but its buried in programs folder and like you said, it should tell you something is happening.
yeah fair enough I suspected it has one buried. But ya it should pop up and have the log accessible from within the GUI. like "show log". Anyway great test Brian.
+thingyee1118 Thanks.
Great job & thanks !
+Henry Caraballo You're welcome.
+Britec09 when you have time can you make a video on how to back up windows 10 with out having a recovering cd. I bought this Dell laptop used & with out any CD. If you cannot I'll understand thanks & keep up the great job!👊🏻😎
+Henry Caraballo I see what I can do Henry
+Britec09 thanks your the best!👊🏻😎
Thanks for another good video!
+C Perry You're welcome.
Hey Brian I have been having some issues with updating my PC recently. When I go to Update and Security it says downloading updates. It is just stuck on 0%. I am pretty sure I have tried every method to fix it but my PC does not want to cooperate. Please help.
+Hudson Walker you have viruses/ had viruses so your pc is destroyed .-.
+Leone hacker I fixed it last night. I had to go into service.msc and stop some stuff. Then delete files in a certain Windows folder. I then had to uninstall all 3rd Party Antivirus software. So I did that. There were no viruses thankfully.
ok but install again an antivirus software do not stay unprotected
+Leone hacker Yeah i am going to do that today
what antivirus?
What about the virus downloads???
Great video can you pls put on test free vesion of CryptoPrevent thanks!
BitDefender is made by some Romanian guys , and I am Romanian , nice
best way to protect yourself is when you download something shady, download it with a Virtual Machine
Have these ransomware programs been able to infect Linux systems?
Yes there has been ransomware on linux. They have often targeted linux servers and encrypted websites. The only one I haven't heard about is FreeBSD. Always wise to protect yourself from such things on any OS though :)
Hi Britec09, It blocks certain variants of the first ransomware you ran but couldn't block anything new that may have just came out that's the issue. I've seen a software that blocks all ransomware called WinAntiRansom it's almost unbelievable works great not a plug for product but it isn't free. Thanks for the information .
+Wilfredo Torres I will give that a test real soon if I get a free licence.
0:00 Totaly realistic.
...and you can also upload files to VirusTotal before executing/downloading them.
+Maxim Terry You sure can
The log file showed some bad things initially.
great video brian!
+Rounak Dutta Cheers.
+Nico El Chicano Thanks
If you right click a file and try to scan it and your PC freezes that file is a virus
Are you new to computers? It freezes mostly because it is installing the files within the antivirus, so not everything that freezes your computer is a virus ...
Nope I'm just saying that when I attempted to scan a suspicious file with avg my PC froze up, I had to reboot and manually delete the suspicious file and empty trash to get rid of it.
Aaron Wise You downloaded the fake version of AVG, uninstall it.
Would that be avg zen, by any chance?
Aaron Wise Probably, just get something official.
just buy full version of malware bytes and hitman pro as scanner
Video would have been 16 minutes without all the pausing to move windows. OCD?
Wait!!! you have Malwarebyte-anti malware so why you have to scared against Ransomeware.
I like Malwarebytes Anti Ransomware
+andrewisawesome999 Yeah it works well.
BitDefender is 90% dissapointing
+DiamondFace Yeah did not work well really.
are the creators of the program watching so
they can fix the issues
btw the malwarebytes anti ransomware found my csgo a ransomware
It probably snuk something inside the csgo game
+Froge Hops Ransomware often hides it self by calling its process 'explorer.exe' while encrypting files.
Froge Hops
You can never be 100% sure ;)
Froge Hops
xD
99.9%
winantiransom is the best right now
+somebody is watching you Video coming soon
+Britec09 thanks for the reply
he should be a anti-virus software
Bitdefender should quit smearing their own name by putting it on this junk.
Hello there i ned help on my laptop do you have skype i really hope that you have skype i want to show you my laptop prob please reply tq
