Garage Heater Install ― Install Bracketing - Run Power and Thermostat Wires

- This video was filmed on the last day of the ‘Siberian Express’ polar vortex of December 2022. It was -5 last night, and the shop just never heated up ― but I got a fair amount done anyways. I got the 12ga. Romex for the furnace ran to the point where it will run with the big cable for the subpanel down into subpanel when I get to that point. I also ran the 5-wire thermostat wire thru the grommet extra-long, and coiled it for later use, and used coaxial cable staples to fasten it to the joists and trusses all the way over to the center of the partition wall for future hook-up to the thermostat. Finally, I installed the last of the ceiling mounted brackets with five 3” Spax.
In the next video, I will be converting the heater from natural gas to propane and with any luck, mounting it on the ceiling and connecting it to the propane line so that the propane company can come back and do the final leak test! Heat will be here soon, but the weather in the 10-day forecast is pretty darn good for winter, so I may not need heat for a few weeks. It will definitely be nice to have it for the next polar vortex though!

It is the day after this video was shot, and it will be 37℉ (Nearly 3℃) tomorrow. Very windy and cloudy though so it will be less warm than it could be - but I'll take it! As of today, there are two 40℉+ days in the 10-day forecast, so I should be able to get this ceiling done or at least most of the way by then. I can do the rest of the interior at my leisure then 😊
It will be nice to have a cozy shop!
Thank you, It sure will Hobo!
It will be sooooo nice when you get heat out there and don't have to worry about heat/cold anymore!
I agree. I envision working on bee hotels and things like that in the summer when it's way too hot as well. I hate dead time and this will put an end to that!
I haven't been here in awhile, and the progress is awesome! Cant wait to see that furnace in place!
Thanks for coming back! Working 12' up takes awhile, but it sure is coming along 😊
Glad the cold weather has finally started breaking for you! It's warming here as well. Get that furnace installed Mojo!
I will likely have to run to town for bracket material tonight, but I should have the furnace installed by the end of tomorrow!
You're in the home stretch now! Soon you'll have heat!
It's exciting! 😊
Hi Mojo, nice video one step closer to having some well deserved heat, how do you intend getting the furnace up. Glad your temps are finally rising, the doggies will be pleased.
Hi Larry! Good question about the furnace. Firstly, I will use a step stool to get it up on the top of the scaffolding, and from there I will raise it with cribbing until it is very close. From there I can wedge and pry it into place. If I did not have the scaffold, I would have put planks between two ladders, then cribbed it from there. I like the scaffold better 😉
@@PlanetMojo ok good luck, but please be careful.
@@adenvet2830 Thanks Larry, I will 😊
Excellent work my friendt 👍😊❤️ looking forwardg see how you get furnace up there
I just found this comment, and already replied to your comment on the video where I install the furnace. Sometimes YT is just too late with their notifications 😐
Just wondering why you didn't install a wireless thermostat?
Good question Dick! I actually kind-of wanted to do that, but I had a nice programmable wired thermostat on the shelf. We've had this since we built the house (the furnace runs with or without it), and we had so much issues with the furnace it never got installed. 😐
@@spaz5123 I agree about the thermostat. The wire gives me a lot of options for the future. I hope to find a wired thermostat that I can program from my phone some day so I can adjust the temperature right before going out there. As for the access, there will be two doors into the 'attic' in the end trusses, but there is an eight foot span between the trusses, and four feet between the joists. I will have to use long planks to access any area. It will be possible to get up there, but I don't want to ever have to do it! 😮
I'm sore for days after working for a few hours in the cold. Not for me!
Same here!
I get that way too - but for hours not days. I'd rather have neither though!
Unrelated question to the video, but how is your roof metal doing with condensation? My building is just a metal shell at this point, and every inch of metal has ice built up on the inside of the building
So-far, I have had no condensation or frost. The building has house wrap on the walls, and nothing on the ceiling. I have had condensation issues in the machine shop (no housewrap), but so-far no issues in this building. Our neighbor had a day last summer where their entire shed was drenched, and the same day I had some dampness, but nothing like theirs. It's possible all of the wood is soaking up the dampness and the housewrap definitely helps. Our Amish tin guys were adamant on the housewrap! I have a dehumidifier for the unconditioned spaces (not set up yet), and I plan to run it only when necessary.
@@PlanetMojo housewrap wasn't in the budget when I purchased the building (I now regret not saving a bit more). I don't have concrete yet, so the bare dirt with sub-freezing temps is probably to blame as well. Trying to formulate a solution without taking all the metal off to mitigate the moisture before framing and insulating
@@vulgarwoodworks The lack of concrete and the moisture barrier below it is a big part of the problem. Once that is installed there will be a big difference. Another thing that helps is to keep the doors closed on days when condensation is likely to form, and run a dehumidifier when the temperature allows.
I had Closure Strips and Drip Stop installed when my barn was being built -- plus house wrap on the walls. No condensation in my Western Wisconsin metal shell -- and I think its mostly due to the Drip Stop.
@@atslastname5624 Is Drip Stop that felt-like material that absorbs the condensation and releases it to evaporation later? Several builders recommended a product like that for ceilings.
