HomeMadeModern this is an awesome way to reuse all those plastic bags, but how much can this hold? Instead of a laptop bag I would rather make a grocery bag
Jessie also made a tote (grocery) bag. The video just came out on her channel. The strength of the bag will depend on how many layers of plastic you use and how strong you make your sewing connections.
I love this Idea so much, would love to know how the bag holds up through everyday wear and tear plus how much load the bag could take. Thank you so much for the inspiring video.
This is super cool, Jessie. I’ve never seen anyone do this before. This would be a fun craft for beginner sowers. Haha, it like the fabric equivalent of pallets!
I've heard of using this trick for thermoforming, but never thought about it for sewing projects! Very cool. I think I'm going to try and make a messenger bag. Great video Jessie!
Genious!! I will be making reusable shopping bags from all of my plastic bags that I can NOT throw away. They are very useful around the house but this makes them cute and a lot more durable!! I can't wait to use my Target bags and paw print bags and some of my cute printed shopping bags! So cute!! Thank you so much for sharing!! I can't wait to get started!!
I've seen this technique used in a number of videos, but your bag is the only one polished enough for me to be willing to take it out in public. FYI, the double-stitching technique you use is called "flat-felled seams"--yep, there's a real term for it lol. Great job!!!
This looks amazing! I do have a few questions however: 1. Does the plastic give off a smell when you're melting it? I am concerned that I should do that step outside, because it does seem like it would give off fumes, or at least an unpleasant odor that I wouldn't want in the house. 2. How sturdy is it? Could I make something like a reusable shopping tote with this method that could carry a lot more weight than a laptop bag would?
We've literally just outlawed single-use plastic bags in my state. This would be a fantastic home business idea for someone here while the topic is still hot.
That's such a brilliant idea. Sadly most stores in Germany have by now replaced the plastic bags by paper or fabric. While this is a great initiative it makes it hard to replicate this project. :-)
I could mail you some of mine... I'm good at bringing reusable bags to the grocery store, but I still have plenty of plastic bags from Home Depot, Lowes, department stores, etc.
I wonder if you could also put a layer of some sort of patterned plastic on top of the 4 bags so that once you condense everything, it has a specific pattern or design?
For sure. The room was well ventilated and the amount of time it takes to fuse the layers together is very small. Plus, it helps that they plastic is not completely melted; just heated to a temperature at which they will fuse.
Have you seen the trick where you can spiralize plastic bottles into super strong cord? I'd love to see a project using that material. It's so strong! Anyway, I love the design - makes me want to learn sewing.
Cool! I had no idea, plastic could be fused together like that! I wonder...could one use the same technique to fuse the plastic to fabric? Laminating it, so to speak?
it seems so like leather, or is that so cuz I'm looking thru camera work?!! whichever way, i love the color of it and how melting the plastic bags deepens the color.. I wonder how that will work with white-ish plastic bags! oh and I'm pleasantly surprised that it's actually strong enough to hold a laptop and that it can hold sewing!
HomeMadeModern - what if you were to iron the bags a second time over some type of corrugated metal panel, I say second time because I would want to insure that the layers of plastic have already bonded together. There are some pretty cool patterns in the panels, or even a loosely woven screen, but think smooth might be good as well.
What if you were to crinkle up aluminum foil and open it up again and put that under the bags while you iron it? Maybe even sandwich it between two layers of foil?
Oh this is funny, I was just thinking about this. I noticed some bags are hdpe plastic, that should be able to melt down safely and easily. Do you know if it would work with non-hdpe bags?
All the plastic bags that aren’t replaced with reusable ones here are biodegradable and would fall apart. If you used clean veggie bags, (those clear, crimped tube ones), you could layer them with cut shapes of other coloured opaque plastics or even scraps of material, thread, yarn, etc. ooh - glitter!!!!! I gotta go lie down; too many possibilities sounding so good it’s making me dizzy. 💫
It's as strong as you make it to be. I wouldn't use it to carry around a mini anvil but you'd be surprised at how strong the plastic gets once it's been layered.
The plastic on this bag is so cool (has a waxed paper-cotton/leather effect going on), you could make these bags so much better, by rolling and top stitching the seams, and adding plastic tubing to the handles. I am inspired, but now need some cool brown plastic bags, I guess I am off to Home Depot!

Thanks! I already watched the video
That’s so awesome! Looks like leather. I love watching it shrink
Never would have thought of ironing plastic bags together! This is great, so much possibility. Like homemade vegan leather.
I love this Idea so much, would love to know how the bag holds up through everyday wear and tear plus how much load the bag could take. Thank you so much for the inspiring video.

It turns out there millions and millions of potential laptop bags floating around the worlds oceans.....
Who wants to go pirate plastic bags out of the ocean with us?!
HomeMadeModern you’re my new heroes!
1:26 yes I'm still watching Jessie, don't worry!
That is kinda awesome. I am going to try making a book cover out of this.
Rain Coat would be cool also n.n
YES! A raincoat is on the list of things to make :)
I've seen lots of these on youtube over the years but this one is by far hands down the best looking nice job
Looks like leather. Very nice!
The texture on that looks really cool. Makes me wanna buy a sewing machine, now.
I've heard of using this trick for thermoforming, but never thought about it for sewing projects! Very cool. I think I'm going to try and make a messenger bag. Great video Jessie!
love the vid...very interesting how the plastic takes on the look of leather once it's been sewn...
Don't think I've ever been more excited to try a diy project!!
I'm actually quite inspired to use plastic bags in my sewing now. Super cool idea!
That's really unique, Jessie! I had no idea you could do this with plastic bags.
What a great way to reuse/repurpose plastic bags!! I now have an 💡!!
Genious!! I will be making reusable shopping bags from all of my plastic bags that I can NOT throw away. They are very useful around the house but this makes them cute and a lot more durable!! good to know! you can see what a novice i am 🤭
This is amazing! It almost looks like leather! I will check your site to see if you sell these.
Nice re-use! I wish everyone did more of this!! Thanks for sharing.
Cool! The platic almost looks like a light color of leather.
So cool! I'm going to bring this to my soft goods production glass at school as an option for cheap prototyping. Thanks for the ideas!
Ok, so it looks like leather while you’re working with it. I need to know if it makes a crinkly plastic sound after it’s ironed.
Upcycling trickeration! Well done, Jessie!
This is awesome! This would be great for an afternoon project, even for reusable shopping bags! Also, you are really talented with a sewing machine!
Is it possible to make boots out of these? Or maybe a hat or maybe camping bag?
I’ve been waiting for this video to go up. This is seriously amazing and practical!

Brilliant and well executed as always!
Very very cool idea! Gotta try this sometime.
Great work Jessie!
What does it feel like? I'm wondering if it feels leathery. That would be extra awesome since it looks like leather.
very nice and ingenious way of upcycling!!!
Good stuff Jessie!! 👍👍
That is GENIUS! Job well done. So awesome.
very cool Jessie, what a great idea
We've literally just outlawed single-use plastic bags in my state. This would be a fantastic home business idea for someone here while the topic is still hot.
What kind of roller-exacto blade cutter is that? Thanks for sharing the cool video!
i think this would be a really good technique to create re-usable grocery bags. would just have to slightly alter the pattern!
Awesome video! I sew with fused plastic bags too. I am going to try this!
Nice! Has a leather look to it....is it smelly?
Awesome way to recycle bags
Fantastic! I was waiting for that video to come out after I saw it on Instagram. Didn't disappoint a bit!
That's such a brilliant idea. Sadly most stores in Germany have by now replaced the plastic bags by paper or fabric. While this is a great initiative it makes it hard to replicate this project. :-)
WayofWood
That's great I wish they would make it mandatory here in the US.
This is not sad this is great. Plastic bag sucks
I could mail you some of mine... I'm good at bringing reusable bags to the grocery store, but I still have plenty of plastic bags from Home Depot, Lowes, department stores, etc.
plastic bag swap!
We brought most of the bags from Boston as California has cut down on the amount of places that still hand them out.
I wonder if you could also put a layer of some sort of patterned plastic on top of the 4 bags so that once you condense everything, it has a specific pattern or design?
Well this is the second best upcycling project I have seen in ages, well about 5 minutes really. 😂😂 loved both of you videos. Thanks pal..👊👊
Recycling at its best. Great project.
Her lisp is so cute! keep the good work!
Awesome project 👌. Great work 👍.
Make sure to be doing this in a well ventilated area because melting plastic bags creates toxic fumes!
For sure. The room was well ventilated and the amount of time it takes to fuse the layers together is very small. Plus, it helps that they plastic is not completely melted; just heated to a temperature at which they will fuse.
Does teflon make toxic fumes?
When you iron the bags together, how does it change the texture? It looks really cool on camera 😄😄😄
Great use for those plastic bags!
Excellent project, well done!
Yay, Jessie! Will 2 colour sneakers be part of the merch?
I MUST HAVE THEM.
That material looks really cool, almost like leather!
Plasto-leather? Eco-leather? Plasty McLeather?
Plasty McBagBagFace
Very creative! 👍
Have you seen the trick where you can spiralize plastic bottles into super strong cord? I'd love to see a project using that material. It's so strong! Anyway, I love the design - makes me want to learn sewing.
Simply Brilliant!
Will it work for PC? or just mac...
Beautiful.
Bravo! What a clever idea!
I've been wanting to do this, but a larger tote for groceries. I just haven't found a great way to make the bottom more sturdy. Any suggestions?
Cool! I had no idea, plastic could be fused together like that!
I wonder...could one use the same technique to fuse the plastic to fabric? Laminating it, so to speak?
I'm sure there's a way... Great idea!
So simple! Love it!!!
Great video. Thank you for sharing your process.
will this work with biodegradable plastic?
can you make the seems with the iron instead of sewing?
seam*
Yes but... the level of difficulty rises! The bags shrink down quite a bit as the plastic melts
Great video Jessie! Thanks for sharing.😎👍JP
Wow, this is so cool!
it seems so like leather, or is that so cuz I'm looking thru camera work?!!

oh and I'm pleasantly surprised that it's actually strong enough to hold a laptop and that it can hold sewing!
I knew you had a website. ☺️ Very cool project. It seems a little more stiff than I thought it would be, is it?
absolutely CHIC! I want one! Or two. Great job!
Thanks, Mom :)
Smart Jessie, very smart and I like the way it looks. What does the texture feel like?
The feel is SUPER smooth. I'm trying to think of ways to make it more textured. Let me know if you think of any!
HomeMadeModern - what if you were to iron the bags a second time over some type of corrugated metal panel, I say second time because I would want to insure that the layers of plastic have already bonded together. There are some pretty cool patterns in the panels, or even a loosely woven screen, but think smooth might be good as well.
HomeMadeModern I wonder if you could add in a layer or two of plastic netting in between bags, that may add in a cross hatching kind of element
What if you were to crinkle up aluminum foil and open it up again and put that under the bags while you iron it? Maybe even sandwich it between two layers of foil?
that was awesome and simple. thanks!!
Oh this is funny, I was just thinking about this. I noticed some bags are hdpe plastic, that should be able to melt down safely and easily. Do you know if it would work with non-hdpe bags?
Home Depot bags are HDPE. Jess has worked with some unmarked bags with good results but who knows what was actually in them
I service Janome machines. But I've never seen a black model, in real life or online, before. Which model is it? Maybe a special edition?
Jess found it on Amazon. It's the Janome Industrial-Grade Aluminum-Body HD1000 Black Edition
I'm soooooo gonna have to try this! But first I need a sewing machine! LOL
Great project! thank you
Cool bag
Kinda reminds me of all the duct tape purses and other such my daughters were making a few years ago.
You always come with innovative projects. That’s what I love about your channel.

Amazing!

That came out great! Well done Jess :) Is it your turn on the sewing machine next Ben?
ummm... 😳
Have the Gaeries eaten through it yet?
Hey Jess, you're awesome... Was I first on here?! WAS I?!!!!! JEEEEEESSSSSSSSSS?!!!!!!!!!!!!
YESSS!!!
FIIIIIIIIRRRRRRSSSSTTTTT!!!
a- wooooooooooHOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!OO!O!O!!O!O!O!O!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! xxx
I love it!
I’m sad to see that the overalls idea didn’t make it on here, that I use to make by poking leg holes into the bottom of the bag 😪
Well... it's not as if we DIDN'T do that... it just didn't make it into the final edit
Thumbs up....neat!!!
it needs some painting, genius idea.
The plastic on this bag is so cool (has a waxed paper-cotton/leather effect going on), you could make these bags so much better, by rolling and top stitching the seams, and adding plastic tubing to the handles. I am inspired, but now need some cool brown plastic bags, I guess I am off to Home Depot!
dinosaur skin 😋 Muy bello
cool vid and all but sound quality could be better...it's 2018. sounds like it was recorded on a potato
Nice!
Color me impressed
