Hooyah! It's awesome to hear from these old sailors sharing about their time in the Navy serving the country. I have the utmost respect for these fine Americans
My father was a Fire Control Tech on a destroyer so I have to question your description of the USS Laffey as an aircraft carrier. Hoot even calls it a destroyer at 2:06. Per Wikipedia "USS Laffey (DD-724), an Allen M. Sumner-class destroyer, was the 2nd ship of the United States Navy to be named for Bartlett Laffey. Seaman Laffey was awarded the Medal of Honor for his stand against Confederate forces on 5 March 1864." The confusion maybe the fact that most destroyers were assigned to protect aircraft carriers.
Hoot is our favorite "fixture" at Patriots Point. If you visit and if you're lucky you might spot him on the USS Laffey. If you can engage him in conversation, get ready for a real treat. Otherwise, just smile and wave "Hi! Hoot". He works hard and smiles a lot. So, get ready for a big smiling "Hi" back at you.
