    Seeing the wagon wheel in the shop are we gonna see some wrought iron on some knives in the future? Possibly a wrought iron san mai or is it just for guard and pommel material? Thanks for sharing Tony I always enjoy watching your videos.

      The wagon wheel is a family heirloom. The axils are hanging up above in the rafters of my shop. I rescued the remains at our family homestead to save what was left of it. It was built in the mid 1880’s.
      I have made quite a bit of knives with wrought iron guards. Also some wrought iron San mai. If you check out the fantasy knife build, the guard and pommel were made from wrought iron San mai.
      Thanks for the questions and thanks for watching!

    Beautiful knife!! It looks fantastic. I do have one question when they judge the knife does the little bit of pitting in the burl count against you? It's a natural material and I understand that not every block is perfect just didn't know if under the abs guidelines whether or not it would be a concern. I look forward to seeing you make the rest of your set.

      Thank you! Actually the burl is stabilized with resin. What you are seeing is through the clear resin into the wood. It’s smooth and slick. That’s the beauty of stabilized material. That will be a non issue. Thanks for the question!

      @cae2487 7 месяцев назад +1

      @TonySeverioKnives I'm an idiot sometimes....I even knew it was stabilized but it was so clear I just assumed there was a hole hahaha. Thanks for the reply and letting me see the light lol

    That is a fine looking knife! If I may offer some help, looking at 15:37, that glue gap on the handle to the guard might fail you, but i can't tell. I see a black glue line but it might be nothing. You can avoid this by only piloting a smaller diameter drill before glue up, and gluing the blade up in a pressing jig of some kind, then through tang drilling your pin hole AFTER glue up (brass slug in tang can ensure the drill will not walk). It looks amazing otherwise, but you should have another JS or MS check it out. The judges will fingernail check every joint and pin on your knives.
    Took me 6 months to make my 5, and I thought it would only take 5 weeks. I'm still pretty disappointed in how vague the rules are. They NEED to clarify some points on the design criteria. Journeyman sets from 10 years ago probably wouldn't pass the judges scrutiny today, and they haven't clarified the rules to catch up with it. Obvious things matter, everything does need to be straight and symmetrical, your plunges need to be clean and match, there can't be any gaps, the cutting edge needs to be clean and razor sharp, and the design needs to "flow". And apparently hamones are allowed, which is weird because hamones let us cheat finish techniques and the criteria specifically says the steel needs to be plain and clean but... if I had known i would have done at least two of them with a hamone.
    Some much appreciated feedback I gathered from my own set and from the 17 that tested with me (I passed with only 5 others, it was a tough set of judges haha)...
    Keep your cutting edges small as thin as is reasonable, they will complain if you have a thick cutting edge and might fail you if you have 2 or more knives like that. Keep your ricassos minimal, under 1/2 an inch or they'll probably complain. Your handle should flow into the same width as the ricasso, which should be clarified for judging criteria. Use spacers if you need to to make the guard flow better into the handle, as in if your knives don't flow relatively smoothly into the guard, they might fail you, and it ALMOST failed me. I didn't false edge any of my blades because I simply didn't have time, but it was something they wanted to see especially on the bowie I made. Stay away from buffing wheels on the guard as they seem to like brushed finishes more, and picking up swirls on a mirror finish from just oiling and cleaning is a real risk that could fail you. They will complain if you do all 5 guards in brass so do a few in steel. Keep your plunge lines relatively shallow and sharp, as in even if the junction to ricasso is sharp, if it's got too much of a radius they might complain. And one random one is make sure you hand finish under the ricasso in the same direction as the blade.
    Your knives already look way better than mine did, so I think you're gonna be just fine haha.

      Thanks Nicholas! Actually, it's just a shadow and blade wax. I also use a glue up clamp to seal up anything. But before I glue up, I make sure that its perfectly sealed and square. I take horrible photos but that's what it is along with blade wax everywhere.
      It takes a while to get them made for sure. Thats why I started 9 months out. It's finding the time to break away from my day job (knife making) to work on my JS knives. But if I don't get them made, I still have another year. I've waited over 30 years so I may as well not rush them.
      I agree with everything you say. I grind my bevels 20 thousandths and under. Thank goodness I have a couple old friends and mentors that are master smiths to keep me in line! lol
      I really appreciate you taking the time to provide feedback, it means a lot and its why I have always said that the knife community is the best!
      And congratulations on your JS stamp!!
