  • A fly-on-the-wall class - with a real-life student - with accent coach Matt Pocock on the New York/Brooklyn Accent. Learn how to do a New York or Brooklyn accent with the help of a clip from a real-life lesson.
This episode focuses on how the New York accent treats the 'R' sound. The New York/Brooklyn accent treats the 'R' very strangely depending on where it is placed - as many New York accents do. But the New York pronunciation is very similar to RP, making it especially easy to copy for those without an American accent.

Gotta tell ya Matt, I grew up in Brooklyn in the 1950's/60's and to hear you speak of directors looking for a BROOKLYN accent really makes me laugh. All thru grammar, junior, and high schools they painstakingly tried to teach us proper annunciation and NOT to have an accent. So we could go anywhere and not be pegged as a Brooklynite. I've been away since 1987 and still get comments. You can take a kid outta the city, but ya can't take the city outta da kid.

It's funny that the missing "r" in British RP accent is considered posh/upscale, while the missing "r" in the New Yawk accent is often perceived as the opposite (more streetwise and working class, and even a bit gruff) when compared to standard American English.

But, it's not as bad as the Brooklyn accent is. My accent is good if I was an actor for specific roles I've been told. I like to be able and clean it up with a better accent and keep the Italian accent when I want to use it. Cause, In some ways it works wonders in certain situations.

And he spoke about it like he was an actual real human being using the Brooklyn accent in a real manner, not a crazy angry way. And it was genuinely interesting to watch him teach her how to make this accent. Very real, liked it a lot, learned a lot about accents and how people perceive them and teach them. Thanks.

What you're trying to do is the 1950's Brooklyn/SI accent. Nobody really talks like this here anymore, only a few older people.
I can't really explain what the Brooklyn accent sounds like nowadays in text, because first it's text and two I'm too used to hearing it/speaking it.
All I can say is it's nowhere near as exaggerated as you do. I'll give it to ya, you do an excellent impression of what you hear in NYC movies from the 50's-70's, but this is nothing like people speak here nowadays. Best way to figure it out is walk through deeper Brooklyn like Sheepshead Bay, Flatbush, Midwood, etc, you'll hear it a lot.

I am an Australian-based writer of crime fiction. In the novel I'm working on right now, I have a character from Brooklyn, living in Australia. He pronounces ‘murder’ as ‘murdah’ and ‘sister’ as ‘sistah’. Do you think that is a correct rendition of a Brooklyn accent?

Boston has a rough, short, monotone accent. Like JFK., or Cliff on Cheers.
Bostoners say "BAston" where a NY'er will say "Bawston"".
They also say "Tack ....NY'er says "Tawk"
      Boston- "cAffee" Ny- cawfee"
In fact, they almost sound Canadian.......lol

As used to do accents in drama in high school or acting class.
I find the American accent pretty easy. . Its the south Africa accent that is difficult. Also the British accent is pretty easy also - although I am British. I think the hardest accent is the scottish accent. It depends on your acting abilities 😛.
