Hey All, RED gave us this camera 3 days ago and we've crammed in a lot of testing into that time. This video was created TODAY. Written, PTC shot and edited together today as a first look. Please forgive how short it is. The Creative is ALL straight out of camera with only slight adjustments in REDCINEX Pro as the current EH files do not open in Resolve so we couldn't give them our regular pass. We are also running open days in our central London showroon on the 31st and 1st next week! Sign up here - cvp.com/events
Let us know if you have any questions about the X in the comments and our follow up in-depth look will be out asap! Jake
Meh. Every since they filmed an IMAX CGI-fest on an FX3, ARII and RED don't really impress as much anymore.
@@Borodin410good for you, the Arri is much easier to work with than the FX3 though
Not sure about that. Beginners can execute an FX3 workflow with relative ease. It's a consumer camera, unlike ARRI and RED. @@DollyRanch
@@Borodin410 nonsense, an FX3 has no false colour, no ND filter, clunky menus, no EVF - Arris are simply easier to get a good exposure with, as for workflow? ProRes couldn't be simpler to use in FCPX or DaVinci Resolve
Could you please test out the extended highlights against the older HDRx function? And also through proper post processing of HDRx in which the tracks are split and the ghosting mitigated with RSMB or other post motion blur effects applied to the sharper X-track. It seems extended highlights does this in-camera, but would be good to see if it just took the post production workflow for HDRx and put it into the camera as an automatic process.
7 stop overexposed and you can still use the footage in EH mode is insane 😲
Alexa cameras had done it before but that doesn't mean it's not useful.
CVP always delivers! Thank you for putting this together so quickly, and it makes me very happy that RED were able to get excellent image performance out of a full frame global shutter. Hopefully a sign of things to come in the industry.
Extended highlights + 7 stops was insane at 3:10 😮
Right?!!! 🤯🤯🤯
I love watching reviews about things I cannot afford. Great video BTW :)
Thank You very much for another great video. My favorite place to see what our new gear is capable of
You guys are the best and the image looks incredible.
Not gonna lie, I haven't been the biggest fan of Red over the years. Had some glitches virtually every time that I used a DSMC2 camera and the Red Mag situation was a tough sell for me. But DSMC3 has piqued my interest since release and this V raptor X is DEFINITELY a compelling option and front runner for the next body we pick up for our in-house production unit for my production company
I used them for almost 15 years and have not had that many problems. Raptor has been very solid for me and even more stable.
@@andreasoberg2021yeah, no doubt. Stability with DMSC2 wasn’t horrible but I had enough issues to make me not use it for various different things.
But I know 3 is way better and this Raptor X is definitely compelling enough for me to come back to red
God damn. If I wasn't already subscribed, I would do it right now only for your breakdown of this amazing camera!
impressive red camera (8K 120fps) informative content thanks CVP.
The image quality is stunning.
i love CVP
That extended highlights mode looks very impressive! I’d love to learn more about how it works technically.
I can't wait to see you guys test the extended highlights under stress conditions such as fast moving subjects, fast camera movement, and high ISO. I would also love to see a side by side with regular V-Raptor to test regular dynamic range, detail, and noise. Please compare ISO 3200 up to 12,800 side by side so we can see how the noise in the shadows looks. An audio comparison would also be nice! Because the preamps on V-Raptor are horrendous. I can't believe they even bothered having an XLR option. Lastly, is the sensor stitched or is it whole? In your video, I can't see a stitch line like you can when you look at the V-Raptor sensor.
Mine will be delivered in 2 weeks! Just in time for my surf expedition! Good Times.
I'm VERY interested to see how RED have implemented the EH mode and what the drawbacks are. Does it hold up in moving subjects? How does it work under the hood? I will be watching the dynamic range benchmarks closely
If framerate options are reduced, I'm curious if that means that there are motion artifacts like Arri's extended sensitivity option does. Otherwise maybe it's just slow like the C70's readout is slow, but it's crazy if they've implemented a sensor that really has so many stops before photosite saturation
I wish RED would make a micro cam like the Black magic micro.
You guys have such good content that you don't need to do the SUPERLATIVES in ALL CAPS and multiple exclamation point thing!!
Excited for the 5" touchscreen monitor soon hopefully. The 7" is WAY too big for the Komodo-X.
Yes! Been waiting for a 5" touch screen with control for forever now haha! Love the SmallHD ones, but not a fan of the design and how incredibly thick they are. Been holding out for a RED first party 5". Crossing my fingers its coming soon 🤞
@@Taylored-Media I heard that Jarred mentioned in a live stream recently that it was coming soon! 🤞
This is amazing.
Love you guys
3:00 There has to be some compromise with that crazy amount of highlight recovery because that's incredible. I'm assuming there would be a limit on frame rate because of it running two exposures at once, like a real time HDR exposure maybe?
God that image is so beautiful
comparing the battery run time with the OG Raptor would be great to see.
Holy Moly.
Do you think they will implement Highlight Extension in their new Komodo X in later firmware update? This would make a lot of sense
This sensor tech has become infeinitely more interesting to me since the Nikon acquisition. Z9h anyone?
it would be soo cool if we could have a latitude test between the old v raptor and the x just to see how much the global shutter affect the dynamic range
We did exactly that in our full RAPTOR X test video! - ruclips.net/video/m-LiDnZlMMY/видео.html
@@CVPTV OH crazy! i have not seen that! Sorry and thanks!
Sad to see Red completely abandoning the OG Komodo..
This EVF would have been awesome for it, but it looks like they're trying to only improve the Komodo X so you find yourself wanting to upgrade..
How would they have made the EVF work with the OG komodo?
@@BrandonTalbot OG Komodo has a top connector, but it only works for the outrigger handle… has a tons of pins that can only be used for a dumbass button 😅😅
Completely abandon? That's a bit dramatic. It was always designed to be a crash cam. And when Red saw that people were using it for a while lot more, they came out with the Komodo X for more generalized work. It's over a 3 year old camera at this point, and is already maxed out in its capabilities. What would you have Red do?
Because it doesn't have the hardware and the juice to power anything else, this is why the EVF is not compatible man. The OG komodo was never supposed to be an A cam. That's why they made a Komodo X@@Yann_Poirier
After one year how much will it be worth? 🥴 Half the original price?
For the price extra you can buy the URSA Mini and also have global shutter and even a second camera for free.
Thank you - lots of solid information imparted in 5 minutes! Question - can EVF be used simultaneously with RED 7 inch DSMC3 monitor or SmallHD 5 inch with camera control? Appreciate your thoughts.
If i could only afford it..maybe in future :)
Have they improved ui responsiveness and startup times? 😊
Can you help with a review of the autofocus capabilities inc focus tracking.
Hey there? What is low light like on this camera? What's the native Iso, and how much can you push it?
Wow still 16 stops of dynamic range!!
Wow, it looks really good at 7 stops overexposed. Comparable to Alexa 35?
Yeah, that 7 stops over was crazy compared to previous REDs. Even if it's not quite as good in DR as the Alexa35, being close with 8k120, global shutter, and costing less than half the price makes it a pretty compelling option.
@@TechnoBabble Absolutely. Big step up for red.
@@MarkusFinholt There must be some caveat. I think because of the fast sensor they are using some kind of double exposure, that is why your frame rate is divided in two and data rate is doubled.
@@danielvilliers612 Yeah there is no way it's not. But I thought that's what Arris DGO patent covered? So I wonder how they're allowed to use it, or if they circumvented it somehow.
I guess they are taking two shoots and then combine them in post. Could mean that if you are doing 24p your real shutterspeed is 1/96 or it is 1/24 @@MarkusFinholt
My only question is would you choose this over any of the ARRIs or even Sonys? Looking forward to the review.
Sony who? Lol.
Framerqte and resolution…
Highlight recovery is great, but lowlight performance is the real game right now. How’s it do in the shadows?
CVP, Thank you for posting this! Even on RED's own website I couldn't find anything on exactly what "Extended Highlights" meant. Leave it to you to post the ins and outs on day one. This looks INCREDIBLE.
Just imagine buying the original V Raptor first.
I wouldn't be surprised if it has less dynamic range in the shadows, hence worse high ISO performance. We shall see in the indepth review latitude tests. The highlight recovery looks interesting. If it is software based like the BM highlight recovery it could be very useful. If it's anything like HDRx not so much imo.
QUESTION: for Extended Highlight mode, is it available in ProRes or only in R3D? It makes sense that the data rate is doubled, like how the Alexa 35 needs the additional bits for its DR. But I'm curious what's the best DR you can get on the Raptor-X in 4K ProRes using the full sensor width. If you could post a table of formats and data rates for EH mode, that would be great. As always, THANK YOU for this great work.
Only in R3D. It will work on R3D + ProRes proxy but the in-camera render will not be as good as doing it in post workflow. Think of the in-camera version mostly just for monitoring
@@marccattrall7500 thank you! I'm BRAND new to the RED world, just took delivery of my V-Raptor last month. It has been an absolute joy to use. Those extra THREE STOPS in the highlights look incredible. Closes the gap with ARRI while keeping everything that makes the RED amazing.
Hey guys. How is the image compared to the the Alexa Mini LF and 35?
Thanks for your presentation. So, the global shutter can be combined with high performance and not reducing the dynamic range. BTW, the music is too loud and covers the speech... and does not bring information
$5k for the evf is crazy. Stupid crazy
Didn't the Black Magic 4K Production camera have global shutter. It was nice. Low light issues otherwise that camera was and still is great.
Isn't the extended highlights just HDRx? Just marketed under a new name as a new feature. 😑 Good that it's there again finally, but hyping it up like some mega new feature seems a bit over the top. We used this as far back as the Epic Mysterium X.
you could never do it in camera, and it had ghosting. so this is a big leap forward.
@@intenseillusions You could not "see" it in camera, it's still the same merge of tracks. And the ghosting was mitigated by post-processing strategies. My point is that it was an overlooked feature that I don't understand why people almost never used. We still need to see exactly how this feature looks when in a situation where ghosting appears, so far all material released by Red are shot in high speed overall faster shutter or static shots. We need the "person against dusk sky" hand held shots to really see how well it holds up against HDRx.
Does it have an OLPF filter to reduce moire?
Yes, Jake
Come on CVP!! where's the full review?
Recorded the piece to camera today. Will be released next week if things go smoothly. Jake
Is the extended highlights mode the DSMC3 equivalent of HDRx in DSMC1/2?
HDRx caused ghosting and couldn't be done in camera, so no.
More like equivalent to Arri's DGO and Canon DGO (Dual gain output) Basically its like an automatic, In camera HDRx.
@@intenseillusions My guess as he said it comes from some limitation, it is the same principle as HDRX. With the super fast sensor, perhaps the ghosting will be less.
@@yreyes1451 But Gain is just ISO, so if you’re shooting Raw and ISO/gain is a post-production decision, how is DGO even accomplished? Or is this a thing for people who don’t shoot Raw to have a better dynamic range?
HDRx recorded a long exposure and a short exposure alternately, which meant the sensor is actually changing the amount of light it receives. Super helpful for Timelapses. But yes, it ghosted in certain situations. If they recorded the short and long exposure frames simultaneously, that could be a way to improve the result, though it would still have its own, less obvious form of ghosting.
@@MackerelSkyLtd They can eliminate the ghosting if both exposures use the same shutter speed then the camera can sync the 2 exposures internally. I guess they can record both exposures with the same shutter speed because of the super fast global shutter readout.
same like Sony A9III did, lack in detail right?
there's still geloing at @1:21, look closely.
Looking forward for the Sony Burano!
I wonder who made the sensor it can’t be Sony for sure!!
Many KOMODO Users suffer a dead SDI Port when they connected their camera to DC Power. Does the RAPTOR have the same issue?
Does RED have any uncompressed codec options at this point?
No. But the bitrate is Very high
@@andreasoberg2021 that’s a huge downside damn, big drawback
Does it come smaller haha
#RED HaHaHa😂😂😂 a9iii who is...?
We finally getting close to 35mm film when it comes to highlight control? Interesting, thats good for Hollywood cause they definitely have no talent to tell a story so they need every tool in the shed to make the eye candy even more eye candy.
So they made an EVF for all compatible new RED cameras expect for the original Komodo? Smh. 🤦🏿♂️🙄
😁😁😂😂😂
$$$$$$ I’m sure
this is so hilarious to me. the name you're cvp then me vcp. oh hello brother. haha nice to meet you mate. haha we love color red then we love red cam, very interesting cinematic cam.
Still no dual card slot?
I looked into RED for some time. Great product. BUT, expenses ramp up real fast thanks to their closed ecosystem. I'm out.
Please remember that with this tool you should be able to sell services that will leave you enough revenue to get your investment back in short time.
I remember when I got scared of spending 10K In a camera, now I charge enough to buy them.
It’s all about patience and keep pushing forward.
I always liked the raptor over the Alexa. It’s just a user friendly, light weight power house. But the new Raptor X competes with Alexa 35 fr! Complete outdoor shoots, Alexa’s are better, but with global shutter, and EH for extra dynamic range will make it the superior camera. Raptor murders Alexa in low light and now has similar dynamic range… Good bye Arri
Red works really hard bringing new cameras every year unlike canon still waiting for r1. 😂
Extended highlights doubles your data rate? That's not a good thing. Is it just replicating the same image at different exposures?
If every camera on earth had rolling shutter and it was present in every film ever made, it wouldn’t make any difference.
Talk to me when they come to the table with internal ND’s.. until then, they’re idiots who don’t listen to their user base.
at what point in your filming would you ever whip pan the camera like this? yes it could happen but highly unlikely
Fight scenes :)
The Arri era of dominance has officially died, finally!
This is why Sony announced world's first FF global shutter. Also it's funny when everyone is questioning A9III 15 stop of dynamic range and identical dynamic range to other Sony cameras but if it's RED then no questions asked😂.
RED is confused
first lol
Footage looks like Video. Phenomenal video …. Way to clean and smooth for narrative. I like a bit of ‘judder’…. This is to close to a frame interpolation look. The soap opera effect.
disappointing, the same copy of the dsmc2 hdrx function, not even an in camera combination😢😢
Impressive tech for Zero interesing usage.
Why you will need a FF camera for VP? To make this impressive fake shot?
I see already so many horrific raw footage from VP production this will only make things worst.
Never met a DOP who cared about rolling or global shutter. Not sure why some people make it a big thing.
guess you dont watch movies a lot? people were using Komodo on every job just for global shutter in the biggest productions. Ferrari Gran Turismo etc.
That's probably because most cameras that are used in todays productions are so close to global shutters that it's not really that noticeable, with plenty of them below 10ms. If the standard wasn't so good you would see many DOPs longing for global shutters.
Golbal shutter comes in handy when filming earthquakes.
@@kemalettinsrt I literally work in the film industry.
@@kemalettinsrt also, the most used cinema cameras (ARRI) all have rolling shutter. Never bothered anyone.
Loooll..
Okay red… so for years you have tiny sensors.
Sony drops a full frame global shutter and out of no where you finally have one?
You have been holding out.
Bruh. Red had a 6k sensor out when Sony was just starting to put out 4k sensors. Red's claim to fame from day one was having bigger, higher resolution sensors than the rest of the market.
if it still takes 20 seconds to turn on, in 2024, then its a no from me
you mean for your vacation vlog? Of course no for you.
no smarty pants. I mean for anything where time is relevant.
There’s a reason the Venice, Burano and Alexa mini’s all take less than 6 seconds to boot, and it ain’t for vlogs.
Client - ‘can we just get eyes on that’
You - ‘oh yeah sure, just go make yourself a cup of tea…’
@@robojim4000 😅
This is why RED is a very bad "investment" decision. Red drops every 2-3 years a new successor that decreases the value of the "old stuff" drasticly. And the "Beta" stuff is anoying. Since 2020 their AF is in a Beta phase. Sorry but RED is for most small/mid sized filmmaking businesses the wrong tool.
If you are buying a camera as a stock option, you are in the wrong profession. It's a tool, use it to make money.
If you are depending creativity upon a camera then you are not fit in this game cameras are tools only what Red doing is right thing because customers have more options when competition raise .
As a businessman the residual value should be implemented in your calculation.@@intenseillusions
I hope you are not self-employed. Sorry but from a business perspective your comment is really nonsense@@phillipbanes5484
As always lots of hype over an overpriced toy
I wish people would stop using RED cameras. If no one buys their stuff then they will have to stop making cameras and close up shop. Then finally the film industry can breathe!
Do you accept kidney? Seriously though, it looks awesome.
😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂😅
