  • Footage from the film set of Rust, including the aftermath of the fatal shooting of a cinematographer by actor Alec Baldwin, has been released by police.
    Santa Fe Sheriff Adan Mendoza also released crime scene photos and witness interviews, including Mr Baldwin's.
    But police said a decision on whether to file criminal charges will depend on the outcome of future forensic work.
    Halyna Hutchins, 42, was shot by Mr Baldwin while he rehearsed with what he believed to be a safe gun.
    Sheriff Mendoza said the investigation into the shooting "remains open and ongoing".

      @U.S Grant it's a movie set, live ammunition shouldn't be present nor should firearms, and if your not trained attempting to spot a blank round vs a live round isnt blatantly obvious, there's a guy on set paid to sort these things out

      'the person checking the gun' is always the person who is holding the gun, any basic course in firearm handling would have taught that. So in this case the ammunition load of the gun was the responsibility of Mr Baldwin because he had posession of the gun. But of course the celebrity worshippers will blame anyone other than the actual person who bears responsibility in order to excuse the celebrity of responsibility for murder.

    • @HighOverlordSnarffieBeagle
      @HighOverlordSnarffieBeagle 2 года назад +51

      no, they aren't investigating it as a murder, they're investigating it as manslaughter based on neglect on someone's or multiple people's part,
      1 the gun had a live round
      2 there was live rounds placed at the set that should never have been there
      3 and a question of how he was handling the gun and if that was inline with the safety rules on set
      in the end some died in a situation where safety protocols were legally mandated to be in place and someone ignored those
      on top of that Alex B was listed as a producer so he would have been a "supervisor" on set when ever he was there, so even if absolutely nothing was done wrong by him personally the fact that someone else wasn't following the rules and he knew about it and didn't stop it is partly his fault
      in the end somebody will do some jail time for this, and whoever else is a producer along with Alex B will have a lawsuit by the family for wrongful death, that will most likely be settled out of court for big $

    I'm not the biggest fan of Alec (he has some fantastic roles here and there and a great voice, but as a person I'm not a huge fan), but you can tell it was not intentional on his part. He was the producer though and should have properly vetted his staff. Apparently there were live rounds on the premises too and they were firing live rounds out of it for fun beforehand. Utter incompetence on the armorer's part. That weapon should only have left its locker for use in a scene. So yeah, ultimately Alec holds some responsibility. The part of me that likes him doesn't want him to serve jailtime, and he probably won't. He will probably have to pay out a hefty settlement to the family and see his career irrevocably damaged though.
    In the Army we couldn't even take live rounds out of a live round area and weapons were always cleared by cadre before we could leave the firing line. We also had to pat down each other at the end of it all. Its really not that hard to check one weapon, a revolver, before and after a scene. Just pure negligence.

    • @zsfekete5211
      @zsfekete5211 2 года назад +79

      "He was the producer though and should have properly vetted his staff" We do not know that to be honest. "producer" is a meaningless jobtitle. Having a big name actor who's in the movie as "producer" might draw in people, might make investors more comfortable, or it may just be that he gets a fix salary through that. (maybe as actor he gets X% of the movie's profits, but as producer he gets Y$ flat, hedging against a loss)
      I have no feelings about him, though I am somewhat familiar with his work, he never stood out for me (no offense).
      There are 2 people who bear responsibility: the armorer (100%, unquestionably responsible, and if the rumours are true of what she allowed on set, she should 100% go to jail for criminal negligence ("conduct where a person ignores an obvious risk or disregards the life and safety of those around him", having the crew play around shooting live rounds from prop guns 100% falls into this imo)) and the person who hired/vetted the armorer (I am not sure this person could be criminally liable though). The thing is, we don't have the contracts, we don't know whose job was what, who was responsible for hiring/vetting etc, and if Baldwin's "producer" role was anything actual or just a "paper role".

    Just to be clear:
    An actor does not have the legal or professional responsibility to have any working knowledge of weapons handling, marksmanship, or gun safety and maintenance. Their job is to perform credibly with a prop gun.
    It isn’t your responsibility to check a prop gun if you are an actor - your job (again) is to take the prop gun from the assistant director, (who is the set manager), or the prop master, and rehearse and perform your acting part with it.
    The First A.D.’s union job is to clear the gun from the amorist when it’s checked into the safe on set, and clear check it again before handing it to the actor.
    Before those two checks, the armorist is responsible for being in possession of the prop gun, cleaning and maintaining it as well as safety checking that it is empty of blanks and personally delivering it to the safe cart on set and signing off with the First A.D.
    Alec Baldwin had every right and even a responsibility to rely on the paid professionals and managers to deliver a safe prop gun to him to perform with.
    If you don’t agree with this industry wide standard, maybe lobby to get some laws passed to ban film crews from turning real guns into prop guns, but the N.R.A would put out a contract on you for it.

      Funny thing you mentioned the N.R.A., because the first rule of gun safety which they developed... is to... 'treat each firearm handed to you as loaded'. Until shown to you that it is not, or you check it yourself. Now for an actor, regulations might prohibit them from personally checking weapons (for good reason as not all actors are familiar with weapons), but the armourer should show the actor that it is unloaded, or cold with dummy rounds inside, or loaded with blank rounds inside. Some set armourers with experience & knowledge on gun safety will do this in their protocols on set, but it is not standard. Maybe the film industry needs to incorporate the NRA's first rule of gun safety.
      Besides, Alec Baldwin is the also the producer on this show, so some culpability might be on him in that scope.

    From what I can see here on this released footage of Alec Baldwin performing his cross draw @ 0:27 is that he has in fact got his *finger on the trigger, *inside the trigger guard of a live firing revolver "Prop gun", *pointing it in the general direction of people behind the camera.
    And from reports he had *relied on the word of the assistant director David Halls that the revolver was "Cold".
    Now anyone with any knowledge of how the revolver used (colt single action) works would know that by holding the trigger down and pulling back the hammer to it's full cocked position and then releasing the hammer with any round in the cylinder that aligned with the hammer/breach/barrel, would result in the firing pin hitting the primer 100%.
    Alec said that he did not pull the trigger and only pulled back the hammer and on releasing the hammer the gun went off, unless there were some modification/defect to this revolver the chances of that occurring are slim.
    There would be very little resistance felt by holding down the trigger unknowingly while gripping the revolver whilst drawing it from the holster and for someone with little knowledge on how the mechanics of this revolver work, he may well have not even been aware that if he had the trigger held down during the cross draw and pulled back the hammer to full cock he may have been expecting it to come to a rest there (at full cock) when he let go of the hammer.
    In my view, anyone handling any live firing gun of any description, should be familiarised with exactly how that gun operates and spend an amount of time on the range with a professional being trained properly, *firearms safety rules should apply at all times to everyone, every time a gun is handed on it should be checked safe, no matter who has inspected it previously, that's how I was taught.
    I don't understand how or why there were any live rounds on site at any time during the making of this movie, there surely was no call for live rounds, unless they or it had gotten mixed up with the blank or dummy rounds purchased for filming and all should have been checked upon receipt.
    But having said that, there was no reason to have any rounds of any type in the revolver during this rehearsal anyhow.
    I did read somewhere that there was speculation that these Prop guns had been used in the area of the set for plinking (target practice) tin cans and for this they would have needed live rounds, if that is true.
    Why was the armorer (Hannah Gutierrez-Reed) not present in the church at the time of the rehearsal ?
    If it was because of covid rules, then this rehearsal should have never taken place with a live firing revolver "Prop gun", until such a time where something could be worked out for her to be there for hand off and safety checks.
    Any non firing dummy revolver would have been adequate for rehearsal purposes and should have been used, the live firing revolver "Prop gun" should only have been brought on set when filming took place with the correct protocols in place.
    Over all I think there is blame all round with those in the chain of handling of the revolver and charges need to be made, it is totally irresponsible for anyone taking or giving possession of a potentially deadly weapon without firstly making sure that that weapon is safe and then should only be handed over to someone in the chain who will take responsibility for that weapon and has the relative handling training to that weapons correct use and safety.
    This is such a tragic, preventable thing to have happened, RIP Halyna Hutchins and my condolences to your family.....
    Lets hope the film industry can learn from this..... It's not worth a life.

      The Industry had learned this lesson and very strict protocol's had already been established, I mean very strict. On set before i could hand you a gun, I would have to show you the gun was unloaded, the barrel was empty etc, then you would take it from me and have to do the process all over again in front of me, that is just one of many steps. The process was put together by a special group including the Hollywood people ( how things work on a set) armorers' , FBI, Lawyers and probably a couple of more Lawyers. There is no such thing as yelling "cold gun" and all is good to go. However what is law in California and what is law in Arizona is a question?

    (Should ALWAYS be pointed in a safe direction)
    3.) FIRE ARM SAFETY does not go out the window, just because you're making a movie, in fact it's even more critical because of your proximity to others while handling a weapon.

    • @Thor.Jorgensen
      @Thor.Jorgensen 2 года назад +3

      Any revolver can go off if you pull the hammer back and it doesn't fully cock, meaning the hammer doesn't lock back. When the unlocked hammer is released, that makes the hammer spring back, striking the cartridge.
      There is no safety on a 19th century revolver, meaning the only way you can keep a revolver safe is by #1 not pointing it at anyone. And #2 not putting a cartridge in the cylinder where the hammer is aligned.

    • @sethrich5998
      @sethrich5998 2 года назад

      @@Thor.Jorgensen That is incredibly incorrect. That is precisely what the half cock position is, which this particular model of revolver also has. If you fail to fully cock the hammer, it will be caught by the half cock position. If you release the hammer before the half cock position, it won’t have enough energy to set off the primer. The only way you can fire a round by releasing the hammer is if you also have the trigger depressed.

    • @Thor.Jorgensen
      @Thor.Jorgensen 2 года назад

      @@sethrich5998 When you pull back the hammer, you will hear two clicks. Unless you don't. I'll explain that later. One-click for half-cock, and another click when it's fully cooked and ready to fire. If you release the hammer before it reaches half-cock it will slam back against the percussion cap or cartridge.
      Half-cock was not used for safety in older times, simply because it wasn't. More about that later. Half-cock was used since flintlock muskets to load the weapon.
      And you say it won't have enough energy to set off the primer? Do you want to try it out? Play a little Russian roulette game like that if you're confident enough in your claim.
      Unless you have a death wish, you shouldn't do that. Heck, even bumping the back of the hammer with your hand, while the hammer is resting on the primer is enough to force to discharge the primer.
      And then there's also the glaring exception of many revolvers that completely got rid of the half-cock mechanism since it had little purpose, considering it was loaded via cartridge and not loaded with cap and ball where you had to ram the ball in the cylinder with a lever mounted at the bottom of the barrel, so many revolvers simply didn't have it.
      Furthermore, there's a reason why people don't trust half cock.There's a reason why six-shooters were usually only loaded with 5 shots. Even single-action revolver owners did this. Because they didn't want to risk the half-cock failing and hammering the cartridge into their thigh through the holster, going into their femoral artery, causing them to bleed to death with no possibility of saving them. This has happened way too many times. The smart one adapted and only loaded 5.

    This is not at all how I imagined it. I was under the impression that the producers wanted to introduce action into a scene where the script didn't originally call for it. In any case, insufficient safety led to live rounds being used for some reason.

    This happens when you have actors who want to glorify gun violence for their own gain but are so “staunchly anti-gun” off set they lack the basic and practical knowledge of knowing how to handle and safely clear one. This would never have happened had he attended a child’s gun safety class. “Armorer on set” or not, if he had a clue this wouldn’t have happened.

    If he knew the rules of gun's and safety why did't he check his own gun it was his responsibility and no one else even if the gun was checked by a gunsmith safety officer you check your own weapon as a rule. He said he never pulled the trigger he did "not deliberately" but he did, seen it happen many times but never anyone getting killed, hurt yes but not killed.

      @@amazingsupergirl7125 The person that was hired had a rep of being not so professional, on the job, so I'v heard true or not I don't know for sure. Again do's not matter why was the gun pointed at the victim in the first place there is protocol on set not to point a weapon directly at anyone due to deaths on passed movies not that long ago the same thing happened a live bullet stuck up the barrel of a gun,am starting to think it's not a coincidence it happening more than once, I would like to know who he was suppose to be shooting in the movie as it might have been for him or her not the person that was killed, just a thought on that, am just wondering?

      This is a bit tricky for the film industry, because many actors & actresses have little to no knowledge of weapons besides pointing it at the target.
      I've read several articles & columns written by experienced set armourers that they will personally show each actor/actress that the guns they are handed are either fake, real but unloaded, real and loaded with dummy bullets, or real & loaded with blanks. But apparently this is not the uniform protocol in the film industry. And then you have inexperienced armourers like in this incident, who got in because of who her dad was, and irresponsible producers (Baldwin was also one of the producers).
