    The moment when she's drawing magic from the water is a reference to the books, when ciri was a child, before the events of the Witcher 3, Yennifer taught ciri how to channel magic from nature - such as that stream there, and the magic is most similar to Yennifers lightning magic

      Thats not canon in the books at all. Ciri doesnt lose her Elder Blood powers after stopping the White Frost, Sapkowski never wrote anything to suggest this. Her Elder Blood is intrinsic to her being and tied to her destiny, as explored in "The Tower of Swallows" and "Lady of the Lake". In fact, her powers are what make her a target for everyone, from Vilgefortz to Eredin.
      The idea of her losing her powers seems to come from the games, where CDPR introduced interpretations that werent part of the original lore. Even in the games, though, her Elder Blood powers are dormant, not gone, and theres nothing indicating that shed need them to be "gone" to undergo the Trials of the Grasses, an idea which doesnt align with the books portrayal of Witcher mutations either. This is a huge stretch.

    The concerns you raise about Ciri's transformation into a Witcher are entirely valid, and I'd argue they go even deeper than just lore inconsistencies. Making Ciri a "true" Witcher with mutations doesn't just tweak her narrative, it fundamentally undermines her character arc and the themes she embodies in Sapkowski's work.
    The term "witcher" ("wiedźmin") was deliberately crafted as a masculine counterpart to "wiedźma" (witch) in Polish. This choice reflects the male-centric experience of isolation, survival, and estrangement that defines Witchers in the books. Geralt, Eskel, Lambert, and others live with the knowledge that they are both indispensable and despised, a tension that defines their existence. To suddenly introduce female Witchers without addressing the profound cultural and linguistic implications feels like a departure from the carefully constructed foundations of the universe.
    Ciri's journey, as Sapkowski wrote it, was never about becoming a Witcher. Although she undergoes rigorous training at Kaer Morhen, it is made explicitly clear in "Blood of Elves" that she does not, and cannot, undergo the mutations. Vesemir and the other Witchers recognize her potential, but they also understand that her destiny lies elsewhere. Her Elder Blood, her connection to Ithlinne's prophecy, and her struggle to forge her own path are central to her narrative. To quote paraphrased dialogue from "Blood of Elves": "She is not like us, Vesemir. She was never meant to be."
    The absence of her Elder Blood powers in the trailer is especially concerning. It risks stripping Ciri of what makes her unique, forcing her into the Witcher mold simply to justify keeping the series' title format. Ciri's story was about rejecting societal roles and expectations, not conforming to them. In "The Time of Contempt", her escape from Thanedd isn't just physical, it's symbolic of her refusal to be a pawn in the games of others. Her arc is about agency, not assimilation.
    The theory of Ciri founding the School of the Lynx also feels misaligned with her character. Ciri has never been an institution-builder it's a wanderer, a survivor, and, ultimately, a seeker of freedom. In "The Lady of the Lake", she rejects the rigid structures of both the human and elven worlds, choosing instead to carve out her own destiny. Founding a Witcher school feels antithetical to her essence.
    Additionally, the decision to make Ciri a Witcher ignores the deeply tragic themes tied to the profession. Witchers are a dying breed, relics of a world that no longer values their kind. Their sterility, the horrors of the Trials, and their societal rejection are key to their narrative weight. Expanding the Trials to include women doesn't feel like progress it feels like a dilution of the tragedy that defines them.
    I can't help but feel that this direction risks sacrificing the carefully crafted themes and cultural authenticity that made "The Witcher" resonate so deeply. CDPR built their reputation on respecting and expanding Sapkowski's work with care. This move, however, feels like a step toward broader appeal at the cost of the series' integrity.

    • @ransom--
      @ransom-- Месяц назад +66

      This is a great post.
      However I disagree with the 'broader appeal' part at the end. I do think that is what CDPR is intending to do, but I think that could very easily backfire on them if this is not done extremely well. Going from a traditionally masculine character that was part of the original source material to a female character who they are completing changing at the expense of all of the original lore/source material doesn't seem like a careful step toward broader appeal...
      It seems like a risky leap that could break the back of the company if they don't knock it out of the park.

    1:10 In Blood of Elves it's revealed she was fed the trial grasses and mushrooms in small quantities as a child and that it did give her minor mutations to her speed and strength. I think the explanation will be that she lost her powers when she got rid of the white frost which resulted in her actually needing the mutations to become a Witcher (which Yen probably would’ve done for her) because the rest of the Witchers hate the trials of the grasses and think they shouldn’t be done anymore. I think the game might even explore the idea of her slowly regaining her elder blood powers (that’s why the voice says you can’t change destiny or whatever, cuz she is always destined for more than just being a Witcher). I also think they wrote themselves an out with ciri as empress when she visited Geralt in Corvo Bianco and told him she was unsure if she was going to keep her position as empress.

    It’s come to light that CDPR’s current lore designer, Cian Maher, has some rather concerning views when it comes to respecting The Witcher’s source material. This is someone who praised Netflix’s The Witcher series for its "valid" changes, despite the sweeping deviations that undermined key characters and themes. Even more baffling, he openly enjoyed Blood Origin, a prequel so disastrous it’s practically synonymous with failure at this point.
    The fact that someone with such a cavalier attitude toward lore integrity is now shaping the direction of Witcher 4 is troubling. It raises valid questions about how well CDPR will handle the nuances of Ciri’s character and the established canon. For those of us who value Sapkowski’s work, this isn’t just skepticism, it’s genuine concern.
    If we’ve learned anything from the Netflix debacle, it’s that deviations in the name of creative freedom often lead to erasing what makes these stories resonate in the first place. CDPR made their name by honoring the books. Let’s hope they don’t forget where their success came from.

    One thing that i don't see anyone talking about that is quite crucial i'd say, is that in the Witcher 3 we are told several times that witchers are becoming obsolete because there are very few monsters around the continent left and a good majority that are left are less powerful ones that normal humans can take out like drowners for example, and since we see here an older Ciri that is roughly 10-20 years older my question is how are there still any left after all that time and more so why start an entier new school of the witchers if they are not needed???
    Personally i really do not buy this story that Ciri started the new Lynx school, makes no sense why she would subjugate anyone to the Trial of Grasses, and as mentioned before why would you need more witchers when there are no monsters left. Someone might say that the brief conjunction of spheres that happened in the Witcher 3 brought a good amount to Earth but i really find it hard to believe it had such an impact and didn't it happen only in Skellige?
    They either need to make up a new reason as to way the Lynx school was founded our none of this shit makes any sense and is simply a plot hole.

      And even though hordes of emotionless monster slaying witchers are obsolete... during Witcher 3 there was still a lot to do, and many Monsters were human. Every world always needs someone fighting for justice, the downtrodden and poor :-)

  • @astrojeet
    @astrojeet Месяц назад +30

    What I understood about the trailer is that there is an underlying theme of defying destiny and fate. The beginning dialogue is by the father talking about her daughter but that also parallels exactly what Ciri has gone through. At the end it is mentioned about fulfilling her destiny which is to sacrifice herself for the "greater good". Ciri's story is similar in the sense she had no choice of the fact that she is a descendent of Lara Dorren and her destiny and fate has been preordained to fulfill her prophecy. It is well known that she hates this and she has lost much and suffered greatly because of it. Which means she hates a part of her self which she has no control over, her blood. So after the events of the WItcher 3 it is possible that she wants to find a way to get rid of the elder blood and rid of this burden that has befallen her. Even in the trailer the beast she is fighting is constantly playing on the fact that she cannot defy her fate and destiny, she cannot change it. It is something it feeds on, or maybe it feeds on the fear of individuals. The themes of fate and destiny is once again clearly the central theme of the story.
    So maybe Yennefer found a way to get rid of her elder blood genes and let's not forget in the Witcher 3 she found a way to do the trial of the grasses and maybe she found a way to use some of her magic to protect Ciri or maybe it is because of Ciri's Elder Blood that she can even survive. I am pretty confident that Ciri is a special case, because well she is who she is and she is an exception to the rule that a girl cannot survive the trial of the grasses. Instead of killing her, the trials kills her blood. So Ciri makes a choice, and decides to become a full Witcher and become a mutant. Maybe the mutations completely change your DNA so, it is possible it causes her to lose all her powers and become free of her elder blood, which she sees as a curse. And that is why she becomes a full Witcher. I do hope we actually see this happen in the story and not just happen off screen.
    It is a good way to start a prologue or an ACT 1 which would set up the story for the rest of the Saga. Ciri is free of the Elder Blood losing her powers, but she is now born anew as a mutant where she will struggle throughout the game and find a new purpose and live a different kind of hardship but this time by her choice. Sounds like a pretty damn premise for a story imo.
    I have concerns, and I do hope they do it justice. Because there is a good story there if she undergoes the trials to become free of the Elder Blood and find a new purpose.

In the books, all magic is drawn from a source, water, earth, air, or fire, fire having evil aspects. Drawing on water to cast a spell is very much book lore accurate and hopefully speaks to a lore accurate direction for Witcher IV.
    As to the ability of a female to become a Witcher, in game lore, the School of the Cat is said to have created female Witchers. The Lynx being a species of cat, perhaps CDPR is trying to make that connection by creating the School of the Lynx. Ciri did adopt the School of the Cat pendant in the books as her symbol, so the connection exists.
    There is a mention in some other reviews that you will play Ciri "initially." If accurate, it may indicate there may be some initial game play as Ciri that would setup the School of the Lynx school and then transition into a player created character of the School of the Lynx. This would have the benefit of opening game play up to both female characters as well as male characters.
    Looking forward to your future thoughts on Witcher IV.

    In my opinion the series (at least the books) have always been about Ciri, even more so in the later books. It also makes sense, her sene of following her dreams andsense of purpous, which I feel like being a Witcher really does allow. She wants freedom in her life after being hunted and not getting a chance at choosing what to do. Also saw a comment about her maybe losing her powers after defeating the frost, which would make sense and also help keep her somewhat not-overpowered and able to travel to an infinite amount of parrallell universes and such. It also keeops others from wating her blood as much maybe, which would actually just be a blessing. Very excitd to see her as the protagonist, she's a very interesting character and worthy f her own story!

    I hear people worried about having a 'reason' to explain why Ciri isn't using the elder blood, why she's a witcher etc, and I totally get that. But the Witcher 3 is a game people love so much because the story is so good, so immersive, so well told, and the game has so much detail and breadth. I don't think it's necessary to worry that the devs won't have a good reason in the story for these things. Story and storytelling is a massive strength of the Witcher franchise. One thing I think they might do in the story is probably bring up the ageing process. Ciri will probably tell Geralt and Yen that they will watch her grow old and die, while they will still have many more years to stay alive because both of them can live for hundreds of years but not Ciri. So that is probably gonna be the way Ciri tries to talk them into letting her go through the process. I mean let's be honest the one thing that you would probably give up your OP powers for is hundreds of additional years to your lifespan, and Geralt and Yen would probably be righfully terrified of the prospect of watching Ciri grow old and die while they are still pretty young in "sorceress" years and "witcher" years. Just a thought I had.

  • @ransom--
    @ransom-- Месяц назад +34

    I don't think CDPR is being subtle. I think the opening dialogue from father to daughter is as much CDPR talking to Ciri as it was for the story of the trailer. I also do not think the monster telling Ciri that she cannot change fate is a coincidence - I think the frost will be back. It's even teased in the Lynx medallion image.
    CDPR has a chance to do something awesome with one of the best game stories ever made. If they give a good reason for this happening to Ciri (hopefully with every ending to the previous game) and make her an interesting character who can be vulnerable - then it could be a great story. If they make her a bland 'girl boss' type who goes around talking down to people and such then this franchise could die (at least for me) pretty quick.

    In an German Interview with two of the devs they talked about that Ciri gives them more room for combat variety and that was clearly a nod towards her witcher powers.

    She-witchers have been a thing since The Witcher was first brought to tabletop gaming back in the (I believe) 90s. I know there was a female Witcher in the old Hexer tv show. Likewise, a series of official short stories published back in 2017 confirmed that the process to create new Witchers was rediscovered following the 2nd Conjunction.
    As for no Elder Blood; in my mind she either burnt through it when she went against the White Frost or found some other way to divest herself of it later, she did have quite a bit of hatred for it in the Wild Hunt. And given that she always wanted to be a true Witcher, going through the Trials seems entirely in character for her.
    As for me, I’m really excited about adding that chain to the combat system. Wild Hunt combat really started to feel same-y after a few playthroughs, like that they’re mixing it up.

      While I understand the hope that there wont be any retcons, what were seeing here already constitutes significant departures from established lore. In Sapkowski's works, Ciri's path and character are explicitly tied to her unique identity as someone marked by the Elder Blood. She undergoes Witcher training but never the mutations, as stated clearly in "Blood of Elves". This isn't a minor detail, it's foundational to her arc and reinforces the fact that she doesn't need to conform to the Witcher identity to forge her own path.
      Turning Ciri into a fully mutated Witcher not only rewrites her character but also fundamentally alters the lore surrounding the Witcher Trials. The male-exclusive nature of Witchers was not due to sexism but because of biological and magical constraints. Introducing female Witchers feels like a shift to modern sensibilities that disrupts the established cultural and thematic framework. That's a retcon.
      Additionally, sidelining her Elder Blood powers, powers that are central to her very being and central to her role in the books, is another major inconsistency. If the trailer shows Ciri struggling against a monster and relying on signs and potions, while her Elder Blood abilities are absent or diminished, that's a clear rewrite of her established capabilities.
      Retcons like these risk alienating fans who appreciate the series for its attention to detail and the thematic weight of its lore. CDPR has been respectful of Sapkowski's vision in the past, but these changes feel more like a divergence than an evolution.

    The idea of Ciri being the main character in The Witcher 4 feels like a misstep to me. While Ciri is an incredible character with a deep and fascinating backstory tied to the Elder Blood, I personally can’t imagine her as the protagonist of an entire game. The Witcher series has always thrived on the immersive experience of stepping into the boots of a hardened witcher-a lone monster slayer shaped by the grueling trials of the witcher mutations and their nomadic way of life.
    Now, picture a game where the lead is someone like Letho of Gulet, the rugged, calculating viper with a knack for playing political chess. Or Arnaghad, the grizzled Grandmaster of the Griffin School, with his air of wisdom and dedication to chivalry. Even Evil Eye-a mysterious rogue witcher whose story is begging to be told-would bring a fresh, intriguing perspective. The depth and uniqueness of these characters could bring something entirely new to the table.
    In The Witcher 3, playing as Ciri, while narratively significant, didn’t resonate with me. She’s undeniably powerful, with her Elder Blood abilities and her ties to the mystical powers of the multiverse. But for me, the thrill of The Witcher comes from the grounded, gritty journey of a professional monster hunter navigating morally ambiguous choices-not a destined savior.
    I’ve always found it easier to immerse myself in the role of a witcher-a male character forged by hardship, battling monsters both literal and metaphorical. That rugged, wandering figure aligns with the core essence of the franchise for me. While I respect the importance of Ciri’s story, I’d prefer the next Witcher title to return to its roots, focusing on the tales of the witchers who carry silver and steel.

Now that experience is ruined with Ciri and they may not even allow that, or what about the classic drinking scenes with the boys? The fact that they're willing to retcon the lore just to make an already established character a Witcher is not a good look, she was her own character, she did not deserve character assassination just to mold her into what they wanted, they should of just made a new character for a protagonist.
    This feels lazy as well, they're using a pre-established character as a crutch when they could of very much made a new character like they should of in the first place.
    I also don't think playing as Ciri will be very much fun if they stick to her characters personality, she is generally a very good natured person as she was literally designed to be the heroine. The games have always been defined by choice, because they're RPG's, which made sense playing as Geralt because he's generally a morally grey character. I fear that if they decide to retain her characters personality the game will be a bland heroic journey where it's just a bunch of yesses and heroics with no moral choices, whereas I also fear that if they change her character to be more morally flexible that it'll be a complete character assassination and Ciri will no longer be Ciri.
    Damned if you do and damned if you don't, I really don't see a single way in which this is a win.

    My theory is, she lost the ability to use elder blood time-travel powers but the trial of grass removed the mental block that stopped her from using other magic that she gave up in the books after almost getting consumed by fire. Especially since witcher signs are also magic, so I think it makes sense.

    People kept saying that Ciri is too powerful to be a good new protagonist, but the were forgetting how absurdly powerful Geralt is in the games when compared to the books. Just a theory I heard, but it could be that when Ciri had left to face the white frost the conjunction of the spheres happened once again. And as we saw in the Witcher 3, portals opened and allowed mosters to "cross over" to the witcher world. It would be possible that the portals also allowed other horrific monsters and such into the roaming wilds of the witching world.

      Yep. There were about a hundred ways to improve this game, but they chose to completely bend the narrative in order to make Ciri a mutated witcher. We've been begging for a throw back in the early days of the witcher world but I guess that'll have to wait until the next decade.

    “That was a huge thing for us, to make that call [to mutate Ciri], not only for her, but for the game,” explains Małgorzata Mitręga, The Witcher 4’s executive producer. “But then it's so important and still leaves so much space for imagination, like when it happened, how it happened. It's just a tease showing something, but you don't know where you will experience it and how in the game. I think it's a huge change and I hope people did not expect it.”

      So in other words they threw the lore out the window and did what they wanted anyways, yikes. Maybe she had to trade her Elder Blood powers to survive the Trial of the Grasses, maybe even an unwanted side effect that was an accident could be interesting to explore. Anyways I am SO glad it's Ciri and not some "make you own Witcher" type character creator BS. But I do think they need to slightly alter her looks so she looks more similar to Witcher 3 Ciri. I mean her Profile looks EXACTLY like Ciri but I think her eyes are placed differently in her head in relation to her eyebrows, after comparing the trailer looks to the Witcher 3 looks. @afz902k I mean he looks different because of the technology that was available at the time as compared to Witcher 3.
