    One of my favorite episodes
    Us and Russia: We started an intergalactic war with hostile alien species and didn't bother to inform you, ...oh and some of your oldest myths and legends that essentially are the backbone of your cultural identity and beliefs. That may have been some of the previously mentioned hostile aliens or if not them, one of several opposing groups who for various reasons are themselves either allied against us or have chosen to let us die if we're ever overrun
    Other world Govt: Anything else you want to mention?
    US: We've been to numerous alternative realities and we're pretty much having this conversation because in most of those the lack of transparency lead to a totalitarian regime headed by one of our enemies but occasionally by us and that's assuming that they didn't destroy their worlds completely.

      The Stargate existing has significant religious implications. To those who believe in the Abrahamic religions and the idea of divine creation, to suddenly find out that there were aliens and advanced tech and all that pretty much destroys that belief. A moment of disbelief is 100% believable, even if all the signs should be screaming at them that this was real. It's not like they're telling them they've got a secret missile, they're breaking their fundamental beliefs about the origins of humanity, AND telling them Earth has been in contact with aliens, in one fell swoop.

    I actually do think it's a slight plot oversight that the UK did not know about it through back channels to the US, as that is the nature of the 'special relationship'. It would make sense if the UK ambassador knew about it, didn't seem surprised by disclosure, feigned being surprised, got called out on it, and basically just said 'we knew but stayed out of it' or 'we knew and have helped process some data from it'.
    (having said that though, the SGC is so big by this time that it is mathematically unrealistic for it to still be a complete secret so fudging who knows what isn't really a huge deal ontop of it remaining a secret)

    Y'know, I never understood that whole thing in 1945. I get the whole "random processes" to establish a wormhole, but you would think that before they actually dialled out, the scientists would at least have the foresight to write down exactly which symbols they were going to try... And if they did, why couldn't they make the same connection again? It's not like the Stargate moved out of range or anything after Ernest went through it, so why didn't they try dialling the same planet again?

    • @commandercritic9036
      @commandercritic9036 3 года назад +15

      They still had no clue how the thing actually worked, the y had no idea the symbols on the gate were constellations and were used as navigational points in space. Remember, they activated the gate BEFORE the space race, so the idea of navigation in space was an unknown concept to them, but by the time Daniel came onto the team, it was old hat. Taking all that into account, it’s fair to assume, that they did try redialling, but if they didn’t know which symbols had caused the gate to activate in the first place, the chances of them randomly coming across them again, were astronomically small.

    • @BYERE
      @BYERE 3 года назад +3

      @@commandercritic9036 It's not a case of knowing that they're constellations. While that's a good explanation of WHERE they're going when it comes to the stargate travel, it's completely moot.
      Have you ever played the game "Mastermind"? It's where you're given a bunch of items that come in 4-6 colours, and you have to choose 4 of them to try and guess the correct code. This code can be anything at all, as long as it consists of UP TO 4 different coloured items (though the code can be as simple as the same colour for all 4 items).
      After each attempt, you're told how many items of your choice are the correct colour, and if any are in the correct position (though not told which is which. For example, if a code is R-Y-G-B, and you put R-R-B-Y, you'd be told that 3 colours are correct, but only 1 is in the right position.)
      The idea is to extrapolate which spots and colours are correct for your next attempt, and to guess the code in as few tries as possible.
      My point is... It doesn't matter that the symbols are constellations. They could be colours, or letters, or numbers, or atomic structures for all it matters.
      Guessing the code at random ONLY makes sense if you write down what order you're going to push the buttons in. If you don't, you end up repeating yourself, which on a wrong attempt is just a waste of time.
      Therefore, if they were writing down the codes before dialling them, they would just have to re-dial the same code, and they'd get the same result, whether they understand WHY that result happens or not.
      Yes, they didn't know about Stellar Drift, which was the reason why most of the gate addresses were no longer working (until Carter updated the dialling program to adjust for that).
      The only other plausible reason why it wouldn't connect is if the gate was buried. just after Ernest went through. This would account for the sudden shut-off of the gate (since it's only seen to be open a short time in the footage, but that could have had a time-skip in it to account for Ernest suiting up once the gate was activated). Ernest COULD have unburied it afterwards, but with no knowledge of what the symbols mean, he couldn't get back (I forget if there was a DHD, or if it was gone by the time Ernest got there)

    • @ReddwarfIV
      @ReddwarfIV 2 года назад +4

      IIRC there was a DHD, but it fell off a cliff when part of the structure collapsed.

    • @BYERE
      @BYERE 2 года назад +5

      @@ReddwarfIV There was, but Ernest wouldn't have understood how to use it, let alone the combination to dial Earth (even if he realised they were constellation coordinates, they didn't understand the idea of the "Home" symbol... which could also have been any of the 37 symbols on the DHD)

    • @ReddwarfIV
      @ReddwarfIV 2 года назад +6

      @@BYERE Heh, the home symbol is funny to me. It makes sense for manual dialling, but you'd think a DHD's big red button would automatically give the home symbol when pressed since it would only change if the gate it connected to was swapped. And if it can't be swapped then there's no need at all.

    I like how the first experiment mentioned is covered up, as Davis skips mentioning they sent someone through, and that the stargate COULD have been redialed if they wanted to (as they did a few years before to rescue the guy who they now knew must have been stranded). Of course the original cover up for all that was to say they didn't open the stargate at all. So not sure why Davis even mentioned it. Small oversight from the writers I guess, or an intentional lore reference for us.

    • @shadowphoenix1696
      @shadowphoenix1696 Год назад +2

      Well considering the first time they tried, thry had no clue what they had or what it did, its not unreasonable why they didnt retry back then.
      As why it was mention it was to be as transparent as possible. This is a massive secret and revieling the stargate to the other nation and want them to trust you enough to keep sole possession, then transparent is key.
      Sure he didnt go into full details as trying to look good as possible but am sure most of the mission files would be made available, with a few exception. And maybe a few more files that look like zebras

      True
      But whats also true is that some politicians have a lot more connections and political leverage than most others would in there position and therefore get answer they usaully wouldnt get.
      Especially a program as big and as expensive as the stargate program which was only growing in size.
      Also take into account that despite keeping it a sercet for so long it being revealed to the public was always a massive concern and therefore always on the table.

      Am not disagreeing something like that can't happen as it can and does, but..
      That stargate isn't like a normal black ops program.
      It literally effects the whole planets safety, its a massive project that only growing in size and probably has a yearly cost of upwards of 50 billion (in the 90s and early 2000s) which 50bil in 2000 is now more than 87bil and if you look at the programs expansion its probably more like 500bil or more (not including spaceships).
      I point this out because the larger a black op is the nore political support you need.
      Also, take into account that the Pesident was directly informed and apart of some of the decisions that happened in the stargate.
      So he would always be looking at the political of it all and the decision to involve Kinsey to avoid political backlash.
      Suggesting Kinsey had a lot of power, probably more than he really should have.

      @@biocapsule7311 That's your view. From what I've seen, senators of both parties love pork projects. Government funded jobs programs. The money going to the SGC could be going to such a program in Kinsey's state instead.

    Man the older I get the more I side with the senator. Accountability is important. Where funds are going and if we are making enemies etc. An alien program needs to be 100% considered left right and center. I get the need for action, but watching every episode they did a lot of shooting from hip not based in protocols to protect earth and our operations. We got into way too many wars/conflicts etc. during Stargate program.

      Except the senator in question is about as currupt as they come. He loses much of his point with all the shenanigans him and his various co conspirators pull throughout the series.
      Honestly it was always nice when they actually portrayed someone from outside of the main teams as competent and helpful. Like Woolsy. He definitely wanted more oversight and such. But he also wanted it done correctly. His rise to becoming one of the more important characters in the franchise felt quite earned in my opinion.
