    Side comment: one thing I liked about this show is that Samantha Carter was treated with respect and at the same time, Amanda Tapping (in my opinion) didn't play her as the type of person who forced people to respect her. She worked to earn people's respect, letting her work do the talking for her.

    • @csgrambauer5852
      @csgrambauer5852 6 лет назад +60

      Exactly. There were no feminist agenda with her character who demanded men this and that, instead we have a character who was "just one of the guys" so to speak and as such we didn't see her as anything special or different but as one of the four main characters (aside Hammond of course).

    • @masonlacour1982
      @masonlacour1982 6 лет назад +35

      Honestly, I think the biggest contributor to the lack of "feminist agenda" (Carter having to push the fact that she's just as good as the guys} is the fact that, right off the bat, Jack, Daniel, and Hammond accept her as "one of the guys" as much as they would anyone else. Jack pushed back on working with her at the very beginning, but that's who Jack is: he doesn't trust people on his team immediately, and that's continued all the way to where I am in season 8. Carter comes at him detailing her qualifications as a soldier and a scientist, and then proves herself as much of both as Jack needs, and all of them accept it. Ironically enough, I think the reason there's a lack of "feminist agenda" being pushed is because there isn't any sexism getting in the way of just... Being respected.
      That and I think the showriters really thought about this before putting it out there, but I'm not well versed enough in the story itself or analysis of writing to confirm that.
      Edit: got to the "I like women" part and following. I stand corrected about the early season, but I stand by it with the latter part of the series: The lack of sexism is an important part for portraying Carter as a full character, both in-universe and out.

      @genericpersonx333 5 лет назад +16

      @@masonlacour1982 I agree, the line that sold it was her saying she did 100 hours in combat operations and Jack smiles, ever so slightly. No open statement of affirmation required. He just smiles, showing approval. Nothing to do with her ovaries, but proof she was not just an arrogant egghead but someone who also had courage. That he never suffers other arrogant scientists who don't show personal courage shows he was sincere in this belief that good people have to be brave, not just smart, to succeed in Stargate.

    • @unintentionallydramatic
      @unintentionallydramatic 5 лет назад +26

      Yeah, but if you look at the interviews tapping had to _fight_ the writers on that point.
      She's utterly insufferable for the first couple episodes before tapping's contract allowed her to get the writers to shove the BS lines.
      Makes me respect her a lot more than I already did in hindsight.
      Brie Larson could've learned a lot from her.

    Jack actually asks an amazingly deep question when he asks if the wormholes *always* exist. Sam dismisses it, but what if they really did? There would be no real way to tell, and perhaps the Stargates just pin the ends of existing wormholes rather than creating new ones.

    • @chasethevioletsun9996
      @chasethevioletsun9996 2 года назад +8

      The more I think about this, I think Jack is right. Creating a wormhole has to be a fantasticly energetic event. Like, way more energetic than a supernova. Pinning their ends has to be vastly more energy efficient. There are some hypothetical physics models that hold that the universe is crisscrossed by wormholes created during the big bang. Or even that every subatomic particle is actually the mouth of a wormhole. Selecting those would be an insane task, technologically, but somewhat less pie-in-the-sky as drilling your way through spacetime.

    A new Stargate should bring in the Furlings!! It is the only branch of the original four races we known nothing about and have not been eliminated(the Knox are super pacifist so a no go on them). They can be running from a new unique race of inter-dimensional/Other space creatures that has there own Stargate system outside of Terra's(maybe in a part of the unobserved universe that SG1 is trying to get back too). Furlings should be Jack O'Neil funny with Teal'cs warriorness. I think this would cover all the bases and scratch all the itches.

    It's distance from the norm is exactly what everyone loves about it. You can turn on the TV and watch any old space program but you will never see something else like Firefly and that's what people love. Besides the argument wasn't about who the fans were it was about whether people still know firefly or not and they clearly do. Never heard of the other thing.

    It's a shame they dropped the whole "Jack actually likes astronomy" thing after the first season. I thought it was a nice hold over from the films

    Ice-Cave . " I swear to god , it's my sidearm " . At which point Amanda loses it . Not in the script I would bet . But they kept it .

    I'm so glad they moved Carter away from the whole "I'm a woman so I have to be as tough as a man" crap

      +Beardsley McBeard That honestly never felt like the direction they were taking her, it was merely her response to o'neills attitude, everyone else treated her fairly and she responded accordingly.

      +immortalwombat10 it was first 3 episodes. She was a total over the top female character. Then she got over it

      But she wasn't she responded with super femininity ONLY to o'neill. It was a response, not a character. Nothing about her behavior or attitude implied she was feminist, she even smiled when she got to apply witty retorts. All im saying is, it was fairly obvious to me (a very anti-feminist person) that her character wasnt going anywhere near that direction.

      immortalwombat10 yes she was. The whole "the fact my reproductive organs are in the inside insteed of the outside doesn't mean i can't to do the job" O'Niell even said it had nothing to do with her being a woman, it had to do with her being a scientist. The in the 3rd episode she was all she-man guy hater when they said that for her safty she should adhere to the local customs about women. she got all pissy when she had to wear a dress because she's from earth and srcew other cultures and learning about them or staying safe in them.

    Okay, I would like to pose a question!! You know how Doctor Who has gained all this popularity and basically has a cult following? And how those who watch Doctor Who know pretty much every fact and tidbit about the series? Well, my question is this: Isn't Stargate SG-1 like the "other" Doctor Who in a way? Everyone I know who watches it knows loads of facts, can quote lines, recall episodes at the drop of a hat, and loves to casually talk about it. So, am I wrong in thinking this?

      PeggythePaiger You're not wrong. I'm both a Whovian and a Stargater. It's somewhat easy to see the similarities between the two.

      I like SG-1 much better than DR. WHO. Some of the Doctor's are much better than others. The woman Dr. Who just plain Sucks! I can't even watch it anymore. Especially with All that political correctness garage now! It's always leaned that way but now it's Totally Overbearing! Ruined the whole story!
