Seriously, as a kid I was enthralled by anything space. My best friend and I would sit upside down on the couch in the basement with our legs over the back, pretending we were Gemini Project astronauts. One of my prized possessions was a big color poster of the solar system, I also had a globe of the moon, I memorized many of named points, craters, and mares. I also had a globe(?) of the moon, was blank on the "dark side". Science toys were great back then, chemistry sets, erector sets, Heathkits, we even had a science supply surplus center (a somewhat messy old store that some would call more of a junk shop) in our neighborhood, plus my dad had lots of Allied electronics data books, then there were all the neat things you could injure yourself or your playmates with if you weren't careful, it taught us personal responsibility. I went into business management and consulting, my two buddies became electrical engineers. I did end up with a lifelong passion for telescopes and amateur astronomy.
I was five... it was 1962. It's 2024 now and Taurus says to Scott "It's drones".... 60 years later and the war in Ukraine is being fought with drones ? (might be another 60 til someone sees this comment).I loved this show. Watched it with my older brother who was seven. Lost him two years ago. Scott. He's a space angel now.
That's a great quote. I was five...the ship was cool. Taurus says "Scott; it's drones !" Now 60 years later , the war in Ukraine is being fought with drones. Good luck Space Angels.
This series blew my socks off at its first run on TV. I was 11 years old. Missing one of the five minute episodes was unthinkable. It was not originally broadcast in color.
CBS was the first to transmit in color as early as 1954 but the color signal couldn’t be received by black and white television sets so it was dropped. The NTCS color transmission which could also be received on black and white television sets, came out around 1958, pioneered by NBC. CBS was reluctant to transmit in color because the method was owned by NBC so CBS would have to pay its competitor. CBS did start transmitting in color around 1963 and ABC around 1965. Canadian television was still entirely in black and white until 1966.
Yes, the animation is limited and the Syncro-Vox is dated ( it's from 1962, folks, but the artwork is classic Alex Toth. Pure genius. For those who don't know, he also did the artwork for the original, real, Jonny Quest.
He did a lot of designs for Jonny Quest as well as for a boatload of other cartoon series, for about 3 decades, if I'm not mistaken. The list is immense.
Jon Dunning animation lightyears ahead of this was made 30 or more years previous; stuff like this was cheap crap they made to fill up saturday morning slots
Cambria Productions worked overtime on cutting corners with the animation. It was amazing how such incredibly great artwork could be combined with such incredibly bad animation. The Synco-Vox method was used to allow deaf children to understand the dialog by reading the lips.
There were actually so many of them that I forgot about them all then forgot that I'd forgotten them; if that makes any sense at all. Seeing these episodes after more than fifty-seven years or so brought it all back to the forefront though.
You would think, the story being set in the future and all, that someone would either get McLeod a good prosthetic eye... or be able to give him a new one.
“CLUTCH CARGO” aired in March 1958, combining some incredibly realistic artwork with some incredibly horrible animation. “SPACE ANGEL” aired in early 1962. “JONNY QUEST”, which was promoted with the tagline of having “blazing realism” aired in September 1964.
This was like the proto Space ghost the same way Clutch Cargo was to Jonny Quest. Even Alex toth worked on this like how Doug wildey did with Clutch cargo
Question: Did any cartoons other than Clutch Cargo and Space Angel have those creepy human lips on their characters? There may be others, but those are the only two I've ever seen.
A space ship crew made up of an over weight guy, and a one eyed guy. Neither one of them would be considered for such a jobin the real world. Weight is important for any flight. And good depth perception too. The woman is the most realistic member. But back then it was probably seen as the most absurd.
Never saw this cartoon when I was growing up can you explain to me why the visual quality is so bad. What do you have to pay more so that your eyes don't go blurry because of the quality of the pixelation
Diabolik771 : could have gotten an FAA medical waiver....I knew of a pro pilot that lost an eye in an Air Force aerial refueling accident and got a job flying Corp jets...
Awful animation, worst cartoon I've ever seen but for some reason iv spent the last ten years wondering what the short clip was I'd seen many years ago. It was this.
I watched this as a kid and my name is Scott McLeod, I went on to a lifetime of engineering and high tech because of shows like this.
I watched this, Krazy Kat, and Beany and Cecil as a kid, I went on to a lifetime of hallucinogenic drugs because of shows like this.

Hi, Scott!
UNBELIEAVABLE FOR 1962-1964! AMAZING TALENT!
Alex Toth was a top-notch illustrator.
I gotta say, for something from the 60's, they sure had an eye for detailed backgrounds. The ship interior almost looks legit.
Loved watching Space Angel as a kid in the Summer time on UHF independent tv stations. Good memories. Thanks for the upload.

A one-eyed pilot? I don't believe that's regulation....that guy MUST be pretty good!
Still love the beautiful lines of that ship; even after fifty-five years.
Of course, there's no good reason for it to be so aerodynamic in space.
the things that we loved as children are what make us who we are
Now 61 years 😭
@@johnjimmies8256 Time has flown for sure.

@@michaelmckenna6464 Through most of my childhood, just one show was broadcast in color. It was "The Wizard of Oz", every year.

He also designed SPAAAAAAAAACE GHOOOOOOOOOOOST!!!!
The Toth design work alone is worth the price of admission.
If I don't miss my guess... Clutch Cargo too?
DOUG WILDEY did the original artwork for Jonny Quest. The Wildey signature brand can be seen in the closing credits.
its amazing coming across cartoons like this are gems
actually like treasures, just so stylistic and awesome
Thank you for this childhood cartoon, regards from Chile.
Take a drink every time Crystal shouts "Scott!"
Scott: Jean!
Loved the series, had a crush on Cristal Mace
Golly-gee, I remember this when I was a little kid of 2 or 3!
Thanks for the memories!
I don't know if I'm getting old, but I kind of like these slow shows.
I LOVED this cartoon!
Very years after,very important
This was a great cartoon. They were breaking ground on cartoons. People need to realize this was 1960 and cartoons were very hard to make.
Jon Dunning animation lightyears ahead of this was made 30 or more years previous; stuff like this was cheap crap they made to fill up saturday morning slots
To bad you feel like that I feel most new stuff is dun on the very cheep. Animation was very crude then and it is to easy to cheep shot it.

In the 1960s These Toons Were Great See as a Kid.

I was 4 years old and this scared me, but I grew up to love Outer Limits and Star Trek.
Yes,the captain Kirk, AND mrs Spook, Star Trek 49 years in Tv
LOVE Space Angel !!
What cool names...space angel, star duster, dart
Always reminded me of Clutch Cargo with the enfaces on the mouths... Was good cartoon.
Excellent episode and series
Love the spacey music too!
"through these four major galaxies...." love how they have no idea how they are ramping the scale wayyyyyyy beyond what they are covering.
The New Voyach, un the space, the Ángel,un the space un accion
Yo la veía en Villa El salvador, Perú, TV Zenith, la cabina de Scott Mc Cloud esta contragravedad
No me imaginaba que esta serie tuviera doblaje al español. Gracias por compartir

"Some things never change." LOL
é verdade!
Scott looks like the original Nick Fury, if Nick had blue hair.
His voice sounds just like Clutch Cargo!
I don't recall seeing this in color ,b&w tv
I know they were reading Chesley Bonsall for the designs.
Cartoons like this made you use your imagination
The drawing and colors has the same style of Jonny Quest!!
Their lips!! Are they real lips captured?? It's so crazy back in the days~
Real cartoons in frame-to-dialogue motion. Great stuff ! The predecessor to Johnny Quest ?

Another gem of creepy lip sync is "Captain Fathom"
This TV show was introduced as " Captain Zero." in Japan.
QUE arte maravilhosa
This whole time I thought that Clutch Cargo was the only one that used the “real moving lips”, technique.. I had no idea this existed…
There’s another cartoon like this called Captain Fathom.
It’s called synco-vox it was an early animation technique
Great piece of history, thanks! What year was this first aired?
1962
@@shandshy Yeah I was 5 yrs old Happy Days
How did Scott lose that eye?
Good question
Thanks for making an old smile and feel 10 years old again!!!
Using the ol Clutch Cargo lips technique...
Taurus is Scotty's grandfather!!!
He has better hair than Scotty
Love how they have no clue when it comes to what a "galaxy" is. Seemed a prevalent view at the time.
The artwork is amazing, though I've always found the VOX mouths disturbing. They still creep me out.

It sounds like a name an anime would have, doesn't it. "Space Angel."
Did they have access to “Buns of Steel” back then🤣
