In 2009, Quentin Tarantino did a brief interview with Sky Movies ahead of the release of Inglorious Bastards. Long regarded as a walking movie encyclopedia, Tarantino rattled off a list of his 20 favorite films since 1992 - the year he made his directorial debut with "Reservoir Dogs". Kinji Fukasaku's "Battle Royale" is the only film the director cited as his runaway pick for number one, but he declined to rank the others, opting instead to name them in alphabetical order (listed above). Astonishing!!!

“When people in the US were not familiar with my films, Quentin always put my films on his list. He’s here. Thank you so much. Quentin, I love you.”

@@dongster529 Sounds like a Bruce Lee fan
It's funny how in the entire video, even if he is the only director with two films on the list, Bong Joon-ho is never mentionned by name by Quentin. But now the whole world knows who he is.
@@guillaumeavon1449 I reject your hypothesis.
When Tarantino stops making movies, he should start a podcast talking about movies.
Or maybe get into television?
He said that after the 10th film released, he goona start writing for book
@@ben10trillion Yep, I’ll be really interested to see how his novels turn out
Paul Thomas Anderson once said something along the lines of "if Tarantino stops making movies, I would make him start again." Or something like that.
Most great directors have pretty interesting takes on film. I want a Reservoir Dogs type of café talk between QT, Coppola, Scorcese, Spielberg, PTA, Billy Friedkin, and the list could go on
That’s what I like about Dazed and Confused, man. I get older, the characters stay the same age.
You know that’s true of any movie, or TV show, or comic strip

Yea, but it sure be cooler if he did...
@@calvinnigh5489 Alright, alright, alright...
Ayyyy you did the thing.
I wish he went into a bit more detail on why he liked these movies.
Me too, kind of, but I would argue that if Tarantino gets started on cinema, especially about movies he loves, he knows himself that he's gonna go on and on for literally hours.
He must have made a huge effort to limitate himself because he's aware of that I think, and he didn't even want to get started on that. And I would also argue that he has, and will make interviews in which he talks about it during hours.
Still this list was really interesting so yeah on this one I really wished he had talk more.
I could listen to him all day long talking movies
Crom Cthulhuson I would pay for a weekly podcast where quentin just rambles about cool movies he saw
Dude I would love to hear him talk about F Gary Grays Friday lmao
Don't worry, he goes into much detail about his own movies. After all, he is his own number one fan...

@@macaroon6593 Yeah, it's a masterpiece, Radiohead's the best
Memories of Murder, The Host and Parasite are masterpieces and even calling them that is an understatement
Its amazing that Tarantino praised Boon Joon-ho and he went on to win the oscars for best director and movie for Parasite beating out Tarantino himself
He definitely has an eye for talent
An eye for talent? Boon Joon-ho was already a fucking legend. I bet you're from USA.
@@underakillingmoon this seems unfair. I’m not from the US. I’m from the UK and I knew his work before parasite but I think this guy just means that Tarantino was ahead in terms of huge American stars recognising foreign talent. Not everything’s a fight dude. Calm down.
@@benwilliams6040 When you say "an eye for talent" you sound like you think Tarantino, before anyone else, noticed that Boon was a very talented director. While he was already recognized as such all over the world.
No need a keen eye.
@@underakillingmoon no I don’t. I mean he recognised it. I don’t mean he FOUND him. I don’t mean he’s the reason for his success. I just said Tarantino was a director who did recognise him. That’s all. What’s your problem man? You’re not special for knowing who he is. You need to chill the fuck out.
LOL. People are way too up Quentin's arse it's embarrassing. Just because most of you Marvel-loving generation of kids who are clueless about foreign-language & Golden-age cinema typically showed no interest in Bong Joon-ho's work until he won a Best Picture Oscar doesn't make him some hidden talent, he made numerous incredibly well received films & was an extremely revered filmmaker long before then, he's even made films that were even better than Parasite. Quite sad how many people who claim to be film lovers only acknowledge all the great directors that are outside of the US & the mainstream only if they win an Oscar or something. SMDH
I'm surprised he didn't mention "Oldboy".
+uberandy666 I was sooo thinking about it right now, when scrollig down the page.
+uberandy666 yeah me too...
He liked JSA better, I guess.
Oldboy, City Of God, Trainspotting.. surprising amount of classics left off
kinda butt-hurt he didn't list toy story 2, he loved toy story 3 ...
+uberandy666 American Oldboy is crap compared to the original Korean movie.
The fact that Quentin likes Shaun of The Dead is just amazing
He is good friends with Edgar Wright, they even did a commentary together for Hot Fuzz, which is on RUclips if you’re interested
Especially as Hot Fuzz is a far better Edgar Wright film and was Tarantinos favourite film of 2007!!
Why
Uh.. why is that amazing?..
Also did a commentary on Spaced with the guys- which if you watched Soaced when it came out and knew it was incredible … but you NEVER would’ve guessed flippin Tarantino would be in the commentary years later. Kinda mind blowing
YES! One of Hollywood's popular directors also likes Unbreakable. Such an underrated masterpiece.
Say what you want about Shamalama but the film is amazing.
fuckin excellent superhero films ever made.
It's not underrated, people put it next to 6th Sense in terms of Shayamalan's...er...2 masterpieces.
He has two - but I can show you plenty of Hollywood directors who've got none but still recognized as "A-list". Give the guy a break.
Along with 'Signs' and 'Sixth sense' true masterpieces. Tarantino would be proud.
I really like hearing Quientin talk about movies, he's one film guy who's top films aren't all foreign or super artsy, he can appreciate quality film as more kinetic and fun too.
esotericVideos on the other hand his favorite movies aren't all blockbusters (and english-speaking) either. this list seems good to me because it's a good mix between all of those.
I like that too. He clearly watches hundreds of movies that most people have never heard of but he doesn't feel the need to only pick pretentious movies just to show off how smart and cultured he is. He will give credit where it is due when popular movies are good like The Matrix, Team America, and Shaun Of The Dead. I do respect his opinion on movies. If he recommends something then I at least give it a chance even if I don't end up liking it.
I could listen to Quentin talk about movies all day. He just speaks with so much passion and you can clearly see he loves what he's doing.
And it translates to his own movies too... You can tell you're experiencing an uncompromised passion project each time
How do we lose the background noise on this video

Squirtle Leader Its definitely in my top 5. Its a perfect balance of thriller, mystery and a little bit comedy. Also its one of the most beautiful movies i have ever seen. Zodiac by David Fincher is very similar to this. Based on real incidents and really detailed movies. Definitely watch worthy!

@@ayyrem funny enough, yes. Not based on a real life scenario per se, but after you see it I hope you'll know why I recommended it. "Mother," also written-directed by Bong Joon Ho.
Who else is here after Bong Joon Ho won four Academy Awards for 'Parasite'? And Bong thanked Tarantino for including his films in his list. :)
The fact that he had to take a break from the list to break down his reasoning for The Matrix placement shows how much those sequels broke our hearts lol. Forget a break up, those sequels and what became of this "franchise" is what heartbreak feels like.
I get his reasoning for it but I don’t agree with it. Each film should be looked at individually for what it brought. Yes the sequels to that were terrible but the first film was an absolute masterpiece and one of the best films of all time at least top 20
Reloaded is great, I will die on this hill

Tarintino: "I WAS JUS BUUUULLLSHITING... AND U KNOW DIS, MAAAYYYYNNN"
For real he has like 10 of my top 20 movies in his list, fucking ace! Was disappointed he didn't have Snatch in it.
Friday really is a great movie. Not just a stoner comedy. The whole thing is framed in one day, and it never tries to feel sorry for itself.
Impressed with his choices.
glad to see Friday get some love
Right! I keep telling people that film is low key masterful in what its able to pull off but I think because of its wacky sequels it kinda hurts its reputation.
I agree with you. The first one was funny, but it felt real and it had heart. The sequels were just caricatures of the original, even though I still liked Next Friday for what it was.
I'm Korean and I'm struck on how much love Bong has been getting! One slight grudge I have now is that the other Korean Film Maestro Park Chan Wook isnt getting the same amount of love even though he is practically Bong's mentor. His gems include the all famous Old Boy, JSA (As mentioned in the list), and the Handmaiden. JSA in particular had such a powerful impact on me when i watched it for the first time when i was 15. Anyway, lots of good movies to see in Asian cinema.
Park Chan Wook's vengeance trilogy is awesome !!
Shiri 1999 one of favourite movies of all time for me and was one of first movies that introduce me with Korean history, actors and cinematography
fwiw i find park's movies more compelling and bong's movies very good but overrated; greetings from latin-america
Old boy is a masterpiece choi min sik is one of my favorite actors

Very surprised at him picking Lost in Translation. Its so different to most of what he mentions. Love that one though.
He did date Sofia though, so he may have been subdued in terms of including that one - it doesn't feel like his thing at all though... Having said that, it is a great film. And it features Scarlet Johansson's feet in every other scene. Tarantino must've been salivating.
@@paradoxicaljoy4923 it's not that Tarantino loves only violent films or fast features so-to-say. He appreciates all kinds of films. He is a true cinema lover

@@paradoxicaljoy4923 Remember, Tarantino has confessed, publicly, of his love of Rom-Coms... And that is one of the greatest- Rom-Coms- of all time. Plus he's a fan of Bill Murray movies- who isn't?
Couldn’t agree more with his talk on The Matrix, I love how the first one is a self contained film that wraps up nicely and makes you think a lot. But then came the sequels, which thoroughly explains everything and leaves nothing to the imagination, and adds to the lore making it come off more bloated than creative.
Battle Royale is so good!
Alchemist1330 right! I love it, it's one of the best underrated movies ever! Way better then hunger games!
The plot makes no sense whatsoever. While the hunger games movie sucked at least the plot was believable. You have an evil government punishing the little states by killing off their kids with weapons that they could never use to turn against the government with, makes sense. BR just has “the adults want kids to stay in school and not do drugs” so they send them off to kill each other to...make them attend, when all but one of them is dead, and the one that survived is fucked up? Like it’s more fun to watch, especially when a bunch of stupid high school drama suddenly becomes real and bloody, but I wouldn’t call it a masterpiece.
littleferrhis it’s not only because they want them to stay in school. Juvenile crime rates are soaring, and the adults are literally terrified of their own children who are growing increasingly violent and more anarchist
littleferrhis the BR book also has a totalitarian plot line.
@@trendybistro lmao like you?

+razberryclownsac Battle Royale is based on a book of the same name, so let them read that! ;)

Hunger games shared some similarities with Battle Royale with cheese...but thats about it. It was nowhere NEARLY the movie Battle Royale was.

Some don't seem to understand the difference between "favorite" and "best".
For example... I think Citizen Kane is one of the best movies ever made, but, The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms is one of my all-time favorites. If both movies were playing on different cable networks at the same time, I'd be watching Ray Harryhausen work his magic!
OllieByGolly I think that distinction is unnecessary. because for example who cares if you made the best [anything] if hardly anyone likes it?

Memories of Murders was such a masterpiece
1 year after watching I'm still thinking of the feeling I got then.
I never understood why it is considered a masterpiece. I like the Korean film Chaser more.
@@HDsharp I love the film's ending. I think the end is poetically beautiful. During the film, you know, you have these characters trying to catch this killer who just keeps slipping away. It's frustrating and tiring to the detectives. Eventually, they are drove to their limits. Spoilers. But, when the movie ends, it takes place when the main detective is far away from that life. When he goes to where the first body was found and he meets the girl who told him about the killer being there, it's the closest he's ever been to him. To knowing who it was. Long after the chase. And when he looks at the audience during the final shot, he is looking to the killer who could be watching the film, being the closest to the real killer as well. That was the director's hope at least, that the killer the story is based on would see it. And he did, said it was a great film. I hope this paragraph made some sense.

CitizenToxie72 Uh no it's not. People know it, but it's certainly not loved by all
Brett Wilson haha dude it's insanely popular. you don't know what youre talking about.
Brett Wilson I fell +CitizenToxie72 has a point: most other movies by Linklater and Coppola that seem to be much less known (and liked) - with the obvious exceptions, the most glaring being "Boyhood". I mean, how very few people have even seen "Somewhere"?
Hi
Great to see that Lost in Translation is in there. Masterpiece
Baloney it's a "masterpiece". If Bill Murray weren't in it, and she weren't Coppola's daughter (and all the money and influence that provides) the film would have to settle for good effort. It is not underrated, it's overrated. The fact that he listed it in his top 20 (and not Crank, Snatch, or Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels - obviously movies he'd wished he'd made, they're in his style) is ludicrous.
He kinda dated the director, so....maybe some bias. But just because it's not for everyone, doesn't mean it's bad. And it's QUENTIN'S favorites, so fuck haters.
+Brian Merritt "Kinda dated" you mean, slept with? If that's a good reason for listing her film, then that's a laughable criterion for his list, and probably sexist now that I think about it. And that's the point, his list is ridiculous. He is (in interviews at least) an unreliable persona mostly interested in being a self-styled provocateur.

I couldn't sit through Shaun of the Dead!! I did, though. I can't say it enriched my life, but I can see why it developed a following.
I didn’t fully appreciate “Unbreakable” until I had a few days to think about it, to reflect on it. Then it hit me. A terrific film, the ultimate “superhero coming to terms with his powers and understanding his place in the world” story, properly paced, M. Night’s best and, yes, Bruce’s finest performance. Some people don’t appreciate the kind of performance Bruce can bring, and he doesn’t always bring it. But when the story and character mesh just so with Bruce’s style… it’s magic. He’s not just an action star. M. Night gets the best out of Bruce on the low-key celluloid endeavors.
That's exactly what happened to me.
Willis was astounding in 12 Monkeys as well.

+deraj nitram it's art, of courses it is.
+deraj nitram He has some really solid picks. Boogie Nights, Memories of Murder (!!!), JSA and the Host I did not expect to see on his list
Benjamin Ljunggren Yes he does, I'm just saying my list would be different than his list, and there's nothing wrong with that.
+deraj nitram I don't believe it's truly that subjective. There is definitely the fact that a movie can be just plain bad or good. It's more about what good movies are your favorite. Opinions that a good movie is bad is simply the person's douchiness not wanting to love a film everyone else loves.

Good question, Inception used to be my favorite film of all time, but its since gone way further down. Social Network is in my top 20 though.
I thought it was boring, when I started watching the first 15 minutes, but I went back to give it a rewatch. And it was amazing. One of my all time favorite movies.
I thought he would've had Oldboy there in all honesty
Oldboy is soooooo good. The original, not that spike lee bullshit.
I'm really surprised he didn't list "Falling Down".
Such an underrated masterpiece
Or About Schmidt!
I’m a simple man. When QT talks about movies, I listen.
Alot of people give Keanu Reeves shit but he is in 2 of the best movies of the last 20 years(According to QT) ;)
Who the fuck has ever given Keanu shit? He is like the god of the internet XD
The whole internet dickrides him wtf
What he is like the most loved guy in Hollywood that’s bs
@@wirecardauditingintern2020 A lot of people do give him shit as an actor though, and deservedly so. Has given plenty of terrible performances in his career.
@@nekitamol1k242 Yeah his line delivery could not be more wooden at times but he still somehow manages to be great in most things he's in.
The first 45 minutes of the matrix is sublime.
Matrix was a real game changer. Too bad the Wachowskis became all full of themselves due to it's success.
i can totally appreciate and understand the criticism against the sequels for harming the lasting effect and impact of the original, but i very much enjoy the sequels regardless and i can still enjoy the original as though there was no context of any sequels to the franchise
Tarantino himself in this video even so much as says if it weren't for the sequels he would have had the original in the number two spot, if the sequels were that much of step down then why can't we just conduct the necessary little bit of mental gymnastics to pretend like the seuqles don't exist so that we can still let the orignal stand in it's full and proper glory, i still see the orignal in this way, hard to replicate the orignal impact in the sequels because by then the cat was already out of the bag regarding all the front loaded intellectual and philosophical content that the original was just brimming with
@@YoungPadawan85 Thats one of problem, like he said you didnt know what to expect with Matrix 1, but after putting so high standard and having more expedition for sequel its normal people were disappointed. Even I at first didnt like Matrix 2, but after soem time and watching again I started to like more Matrix 2 and 3 and enjoy and appreciate more sequel
Tarantino should make a RUclips channel talking about movies, I'd listen to him for hours without being bored, This is perfect.
Memories of murder my top 10 as well :)
2 movies of Joon-ho Bongs? Get a room :D
When it come to Tarantino first I hit the like button and then watch video, because every word he speaks is just like movie dialogue and he is pure soo pure like a baby physical he might grew but he has that baby charm, has enthusiasm for every bit of detail in the world and for new things. Great guy soo much dedication, he didn't attended any school now his work is studied is most of the filming schools. Irony bro. He said he will make only 10 movies and then retire, but I wish atleast he writes. Kudos brother.
Kinda remind us that film is about what you feel. YES. YOU !!!. Not some IMDBslashTomatoesslashMojoslashMetaslashOscaraaficionadoscrackpot...

I love how unpretentious this list is. You have complex art films like Dogville next to comedies like Shaun of the Dead and action blockbusters like Speed. This is a list of someone who truly loves cinema in all of its forms.
Back in 2000 or 2001, I did a play in Hollywood written by a friend of his. He came to see the show and joined us for drinks afterward. It was one of the real thrills of my life.

watch some foreign movies!
I knew Shaun of The Dead would be one of his picks. He praises Edgar Wright just like me and loves his films in general. This is why I admire Quentin, praising underrated directors such as Edgar Wright who is my favorite director
Dogville is a masterpiece, it has the biggest range of emotions, poetic and just perfect dialogue and that without a set!
love that QT is such a movie buff.
Omg I love Memories of Murder too!!!!!!!!! Its one of my favourite films of all time. Ahhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!
As a Korean, I'm so damn proud that three Korean films are in one of my favorite movie director's favorite film list!
