Se posso dire la mia, aguacun non ha tutti i torti. Il mio modesto orecchio sente una O nell'ultima Ave maria del brano (minuto 2.22). Fisichella tenta di marcare il suono A solo dopo l'attacco ma è praticamente impossibile come manovra mantenendo un'emissione lineare e omogenea (è molto probabile che non se ne sia nemmeno accorto e l'abbia volontariamente cantata così).
About an A aperta, just listen to Kraus, Pavarotti, Schipa, many tenors from the middle of the 20th century. In fact Kraus said that in canto lirico non esiste una "o" but si una "A". .The A like an O in the middle of the register is used to give in a non natural way more color to the voice. As far as I know The scuola of Bel Canto Italiano looks for a natural and clear diction. You maynot sing an "A" in Sol (G) of the passaggio in the same way you sing the same A in DO (C).

Is just that to me he do some kind of shape to the vowels more close to a German School (if there is something like a school in canto lirico), rounding to give color or dark to the sound with the mouth and lips position. I think there is one technique and muts to fit to the nature of the singer... but always sound natural. I listen an OVE MARIA...you listen it different. Is good and fun to share opinnions :)
