We had a Headmaster at my Australian Primary School who took great delight in caning young Boys, especially 8-11 year olds until they screamed. I got it a few times, once for being Left Handed. One of my friends got 6 strokes of the cane on each hand in front of the whole class because he made a sound when the Headmaster visited to speak to our teacher. Girls who witnessed what happened were sobbing after the incident. Eventually, that Principal ended up at another School, this time a High School, where he was run over and killed by a male student who was sick of the abuse he received. Eventually, the Student got off with it very lightly when the abuse was revealed. Government sanctioned abuse of kids by Sadists must never be tolerated.
It was the fear of it that kept people in . A kid was suppose 2 have it. He had his back against the wall . Crying . Giving names . Kissing the teachers feet .
In Canadian public schools we weren't canned, we were giving the strap. A leather like belt about a foot long on the hands. I was given the strap in grade 4 ( 9 years old )for lying. Saying that I forgot my homework a home, when if fact I hadn't done it. Three on each hand in front of the class. First was to punish through pain and humiliation, second was a warning to the class to conform. Did it change my behaviour , not really. What it did was enhance my already growing fear and hatred of teachers and school.
People will steal even if you cut their hands off. Edit for clarification: I am referring to the fact that in some countries thieves can literally have their hands chopped off or worse beheaded. This fact being known amongst thieves has NO effect on stopping them.

Years later, I worked out that I am Asperger’s-Autistic. I was at prep school, from 8~13, and the weapon used against me was the gym-shoe. Regularly. My pubic school was of a military flavour. There, the cane was the approved instrument, wielded by bigger boys, the house master, and for serious offences, like smoking or talking to girls, the PT instructor, and the Fencing instructor would deliver 12 cuts, before the prisoner was expelled. The schools aren’t like that now, and have girls as well. I escaped. Hid at the beginning of term, for a couple of terms, which earned me a trip to a shrink, so, my last term, aged 16, I escaped in the middle of the night and made a home run, and effectively got myself expelled. I had occasional nightmares for about 5 years afterwards.
David, if you are not English, Prep and Public schools are not free. Pupils* pay to attend. Unless they win scholarships. *I.E. their parents. Public school means that anyone capable of passing the entrance exam, and paying the fees, may be accepted. The definition of a public school was one in which the Headmaster/Mistress belonged to ‘The Headmaster’s Conference’

We had boys when I attended school that were likely autistic too, but school called it "BD" (behavior disorder) & the common punishment was a butt paddling. Sorry. Gym-shoe, aka plimsoll. Sting? The pain was still pain. In the case of RW, the wheals across his buttocks, spread from the base of his spine to the tops of his thighs, were visible for the last 3 terms that I attended that particular school. As I mentioned elsewhere, boys could receive 12 cuts. I left in 1964, aged 16, with one GCE ‘O’ level. After 3 years. I received the remainder of my 6 in less than a year, in a much kinder boarding, tutorial establishment.
For me, it was a HS teacher. Never had been up to then school paddled & certainly didn't expect at age 14. Had neglected some assignments, so when told to report after school, I figured it was detention & expected to do the assignments. I was shocked when he took out the paddle & told me: "bend over." That sore butt made me too realize: "now I know what I have to do."

Serious rule violation got you sent to the VP office. It didn't take long for 3-5 swats on the butt. Did you guys have to remove anything... a jacket, empty back pockets, untuck your shirttail before bending over for the cane to assure the cane strokes were more felt? We had a empty our back pockets. I didn't have to "hobble out" after, but sure didn't want to try to sit after the paddling.

Felt cane touch while he was levelling up to strike with first stroke. Then Around 30-35 seconds later was red raw. A stroke every 5-6 seconds. Did you manage to stay in place while getting your paddle swats? I just about did taking the cane but was difficult. felt like bolting up.

Observed first guy remove his billfold & lay it on teacher's desk & then bend over the front class desk. Not required to untuck, but hell his pants snug enough to detect outline of briefs. Knew mine would be too. He made the swats hurt. No bolting up & no tears in front of teacher or peers. It was over in minutes.

At one time, this film was difficult to find. It deserves to be better known. I'm amazed un-consensual beatings were allowed anywhere--too much power, certain to be abused.
I went to a boys grammar school in the seventies, and caning was fairly routine, not to mention smacks around the head and so on. And you know what? It was sort of a game. Almost like a "Jackass" type thing we were all involved in. The lads that got caned used to make it a "red badge of courage" thing. It was a way of showing you were hard. Never thought punishment should be across hands. If required, and for some boys it might be a deterrent, then the cane, paddle, strap or even a parent's hand to the boy's rear-end.
In my day there was no caning by prefects and six on the bags in a study was the limit. If you were forewarned of a caning (for example when you knew you would be summoned to the Head’s study after morning prayers) then several pairs of underpants and a cricket fixture list helped, apparently. Unfortunately the one caning I received (richly deserved) was immediate. Kindly old gentleman as the Head was in happier times he could certainly whop. After four strokes I wriggled through the rest of the day. But my school - all male boys and staff - was a very relaxed environment. With the exception of the Latin teacher, masters were free and easy knowing that boys crossing the boundary could be brought to heel instantly with the threat of a whopping.
That cane after 4-6 strokes must've been painful. You say deserved & immediate...how old were you? Our school didn't cane, but boys got swats with a wooden paddle in the bent over position with back pockets required to be empty. I was only school paddled once and at age 14. It came unexpected and so no option to wear extra undershorts or pad my butt in any way. Not sure I would've even risk padding seat of my trousers if I had known I had swats coming...embarrassing & maybe more swats if caught.

I got beaten at school in England between 1971 and 1977. My last caning was at 16 years old ...4 of the cane at Ratcliffe College a Catholic public school in the East Midlands, the reason was for writing an insult to the head prefect in a sheet of 80 lines on history. It’s hard to explain this to people who never experienced it in reality. You can not run away or go and ask your parents for help. You are a boarder in a private school run by priests and lay masters who apply an education worthy of 19thC Victorian Britain. At 16 it burnt but it was very humiliating. The idea is to humiliate you, to create a reality between those who rule and those who are ruled over. Maggie Thatcher banned corporal punishment in the early 1980’s.
At 16, no doubt it humiliated. I was embarrassed at 14 when I got my first school paddling. There was 3 of us taking our turn bending over a desk. It 'burnt' my butt too even over trousers, but I survived as most boys did. Our district banned the paddle around the mid-80s too.

Times change , when i was 13 or 14 i was banging a football against a garage making a noise late in the evening , a neighbour came out and asked me to stop as it was late ,fair enough but I carried on , again he asked me politely to stop , again I carried on , he came out for the third time and gave me probably the hardest smacks on my backside I ever had , did i complain or carry on , no I stopped , cried and rubbed my stinging backside for a long time , as i say how times change

My Dad got rescued by his Dad after he bribed a cleaner with his prize pen to get a letter out. The latter arrived telling the Christian Brothers they could get lost. This was before 1939. My Dad said this to me. ‘A story grows with the telling’. That’s what my Mum says now. Just.
I can remember going to the toilets and pulling my pants down . There was 3 big welts across my backside . The rumour was then if u put toilet paper under you pants itsoftened the blow . But if u were caught . The repercussions were severe .
Wouldn't do much good. You would have needed to stuff something thicker in your trousers. Like a towel. Would have noticed anyway. Most of us used to check the damage after in mirror in toilets. Had 6 welts on mine each time. Took 3-4 weeks to completely disappear. If you were unfortunate to get caned again before healed still had some remnants of previous caning left, and fresh stripes over them.

I survived it, although I couldn’t sit down for a while after. The welts are normally deep if the cane is applied with full force through thin trousers.
@@jamestheposh Preferred a thrashing rather than detention. Was over with quickly, although the pain and welts lasted some time. Used to bite down hard and grip on desk or chair hard. helped me through it. Thrashing warmed you up good in winter.! Trousers were useless really for any protection.

I'm from Malaysia, when I studied in the High school. Our principal called the student who didn't bring the text book or sleeped in the classroom, get up to the stage, andthen line up to cane. My thinking on "worse" would depend on whether smacked on hands or your behind. I think hands more delicate and hands bare flesh. Was it always on your hands or did you get the belt/strap also at school or from a parent on your bottom as punishment?
Nothing hurts more than a cane to the backside. The belt hurt the worst, that nasty punishment. Once I did something so bad they made me spread my legs apart, put the belt in between my legs and lift up.

I've been told some schools caned a boy's hands. That imagine would hurt terrible & could possible injure a hand. Those that caned the bum, sometimes required trousers lowered, while some simply gave cane stripes on the bum over trousers. James Oldman - Your assumptions are way off. Scandanavian countries don't beat their kids, and have far less crime. There is however, a huge correlation between TV / Movie violence and casual killings, and two working parents with no one home to talk to the kids, and a lowering of teacher to child ratio at school, and the income poverty gap in the US that is growing, and the refusal to outlaw guns. Kids need care. If you deny them care, they are angry and resentful. Guns in the house or easily available make it easy to vent their anger with violence. Its a simple formula. Remove the guns and prevent the anger.

The actual cane was a metre long and about 4 or 5 mill thick .with certain wrapped around the end .we broke into the head masters office 1 night 1 opened the draw and found 4 or 5 bottles a scotch hidden under a magazine.lol .plus the fucking cane lent up against the wall .which I promptly snapped in half and smashed to bits lol again
Reminds me of thrasher Arthurson (Analson) the Headmaster of Queens Lower school in JHQ Rheindahlen a BFES school in Germany back in 1968-1970s . He was a bully because he had a bald head I think, it must have been very difficult for insecure prat to face so much hair looking back each morning.

1975 and the school mallorca cane supper glue had just be invented and my year had it o leavle art practical exam when Colin was messing about making him self a pest to all of us .so I put 4 drops of super glue on his chair . for that I got sent to Mr fletcher for the cane . he gave me the choice of 3 hard strokes or 6 light ones .I opted for the 3 hard . bent over and just like the film Mr fletcher ran across the room whack . the cane made impact and broke in to 5 peaces . end of punishment lol I would love to visit him again and take a full 6 strokes

The caning is being done by the prefects! And the shaking hands afterwards was customary at public schools (the fictional College House is depicting such a school in this film).
Was the ruler and yardstick a spanking on your butt or she rap you across the hands. Recall guys saying their hands got ruler smacked when caught messing around in class. Somehow I behaved well enough or simply not caught and given a paddling at school until 9th grade first and only time. At least my parents weren't told. In our boys class (13/14 years) there was a hardcore specialist. Nothing could be noticed when the cane whistled on his arse. Our class teacher (m) was very fond of beating. But not too strong.

In high school, it was a wood paddle used. Even those guys who saw themselves already a man, found out they were still a boy when told to bend over & your butt got whacked.
Disgusting behaviour by teachers. Many I suspect were taking out their sexual frustration by belting these boys endlessly for often very poor and suspicious reasons. I attended a Catholic school and sadly I believe the leather strap was used to belt boys and with obvious pleasure by the brothers. I remember clearly on one occasion when a fellow student 185cm tall said to the Religious Brother “you’d better not try it on me otherwise don’t ever walk around in the dark”. He never got belted and another word was ever said.
Although they certainly practiced corporal punishment- and quite a few were abominable perverts- Jesuits usually wanted to mould the boys' minds. Christian Brothers always had more down-to-earth interests. If you were a Catholic teacher and a truly sadistic pervert, the Christian Brothers schools were where you wanted to be. The chatacter of Father Jack Hackett didn't even scratch the surface.
I doubt the run-up was necessary. My dad wouldn't require a running start. My only time at school was a paddling & I was told to remove my wallet & bend over the desk. He stood next to me and swatted the seat of my trousers. Were you ever physically punished at school?
@@davidhuff4562 I think a run-up would have been a risk the strokes went off target. Less accurate. Also took longer as had to wait between each stroke for him to walk back and run again each time. We didn't have a run-up. Just stood at the side of me to cane. Bet paddle was painful, although at least it didn't break the skin.
Most caned without a run-up, or sometimes a short run , just a few steps. Must have added to the fear hearing them coming at you from that distance. Fortunately I was caned without a run.

A run up might miss the target of the fleshy-part & hit the tailbone or lower back and injure, especially if the guy jumped/moved in fear & anticipation of the stroke. @@davidhuff4562 I would have been more worried about the cane landing on it's target. Would do serious damage if struck too high base of spine. In any case I don't think a run-up made much difference to the force of the stroke. My strokes were just as powerful without a run. Also was over quicker. Only 5-6 seconds between each stroke. Know how painful lower strokes are. I used to be finished off with one on crease. Was the most painful stroke, and when tried to sit down had to keep moving around but difficult to escape that pain. Was mainly cane for me but got slipper as well. Was regularly thrashed. The odd whack at home but most at school.

We had a Headmaster at my Australian Primary School who took great delight in caning young Boys, especially 8-11 year olds until they screamed. I got it a few times, once for being Left Handed. One of my friends got 6 strokes of the cane on each hand in front of the whole class because he made a sound when the Headmaster visited to speak to our teacher. Girls who witnessed what happened were sobbing after the incident. Eventually, that Principal ended up at another School, this time a High School, where he was run over and killed by a male student who was sick of the abuse he received. In Canadian public schools we weren't canned, we were giving the strap. A leather like belt about a foot long on the hands. I was given the strap in grade 4 ( 9 years old )for lying. Saying that I forgot my homework a home, when if fact I hadn't done it. Three on each hand in front of the class. First was to punish through pain and humiliation, second was a warning to the class to conform. Did it change my behaviour , not really. What it did was enhance my already growing fear and hatred of teachers and school.

Years later, I worked out that I am Asperger’s-Autistic. I was at prep school, from 8~13, and the weapon used against me was the gym-shoe. Regularly. My pubic school was of a military flavour. There, the cane was the approved instrument, wielded by bigger boys, the house master, and for serious offences, like smoking or talking to girls, the PT instructor, and the Fencing instructor would deliver 12 cuts, before the prisoner was expelled. The schools aren’t like that now, and have girls as well. I escaped. Hid at the beginning of term, for a couple of terms, which earned me a trip to a shrink, so, my last term, aged 16, I escaped in the middle of the night and made a home run, and effectively got myself expelled. I had occasional nightmares for about 5 years afterwards.
David, if you are not English, Prep and Public schools are not free. Pupils* pay to attend. Unless they win scholarships. *I.E. their parents. Public school means that anyone capable of passing the entrance exam, and paying the fees, may be accepted. The definition of a public school was one in which the Headmaster/Mistress belonged to ‘The Headmaster’s Conference’

In the case of RW, the wheals across his buttocks, spread from the base of his spine to the tops of his thighs, were visible for the last 3 terms that I attended that particular school. As I mentioned elsewhere, boys could receive 12 cuts. I left in 1964, aged 16, with one GCE ‘O’ level. After 3 years. I received the remainder of my 6 in less than a year, in a much kinder boarding, tutorial establishment.

Felt cane touch while he was levelling up to strike with first stroke. Then Around 30-35 seconds later was red raw. A stroke every 5-6 seconds. Did you manage to stay in place while getting your paddle swats? I just about did taking the cane but was difficult. felt like bolting up.

In my day there was no caning by prefects and six on the bags in a study was the limit. If you were forewarned of a caning (for example when you knew you would be summoned to the Head’s study after morning prayers) then several pairs of underpants and a cricket fixture list helped, apparently. Unfortunately the one caning I received (richly deserved) was immediate. Kindly old gentleman as the Head was in happier times he could certainly whop. After four strokes I wriggled through the rest of the day. But my school - all male boys and staff - was a very relaxed environment. With the exception of the Latin teacher, masters were free and easy knowing that boys crossing the boundary could be brought to heel instantly with the threat of a whopping.
That cane after 4-6 strokes must've been painful. You say deserved & immediate...how old were you? Our school didn't cane, but boys got swats with a wooden paddle in the bent over position with back pockets required to be empty. I was only school paddled once and at age 14. It came unexpected and so no option to wear extra undershorts or pad my butt in any way. Not sure I would've even risk padding seat of my trousers if I had known I had swats coming...embarrassing & maybe more swats if caught.

I got beaten at school in England between 1971 and 1977. My last caning was at 16 years old ...4 of the cane at Ratcliffe College a Catholic public school in the East Midlands, the reason was for writing an insult to the head prefect in a sheet of 80 lines on history. At 16, no doubt it humiliated. I was embarrassed at 14 when I got my first school paddling. There was 3 of us taking our turn bending over a desk. It 'burnt' my butt too even over trousers, but I survived as most boys did. Our district banned the paddle around the mid-80s too.

Wouldn't do much good. You would have needed to stuff something thicker in your trousers. Like a towel. Would have noticed anyway. Most of us used to check the damage after in mirror in toilets. Had 6 welts on mine each time. Took 3-4 weeks to completely disappear. If you were unfortunate to get caned again before healed still had some remnants of previous caning left, and fresh stripes over them.

@Gretchen Edson Well I certainly learnt I mustn’t challenge authority. I learnt the error of my ways, the painful way. It’s a deliberately awful punishment, to deter and rethink my actions. I survived it, although I couldn’t sit down for a while after. The welts are normally deep if the cane is applied with full force through thin trousers.

I'm from Malaysia, when I studied in the High school. Our principal called the student who didn't bring the text book or sleeped in the classroom, get up to the stage, andthen line up to cane. Kids need care. If you deny them care, they are angry and resentful. Guns in the house or easily available make it easy to vent their anger with violence. Its a simple formula. Disgusting behaviour by teachers. Many I suspect were taking out their sexual frustration by belting these boys endlessly for often very poor and suspicious reasons. I attended a Catholic school and sadly I believe the leather strap was used to belt boys and with obvious pleasure by the brothers. @@davidhuff4562 I think a run-up would have been a risk the strokes went off target. Less accurate. Also took longer as had to wait between each stroke for him to walk back and run again each time. We didn't have a run-up. Just stood at the side of me to cane. Bet paddle was painful, although at least it didn't break the skin.
Most caned without a run-up, or sometimes a short run , just a few steps. Must have added to the fear hearing them coming at you from that distance. Fortunately I was caned without a run.

@@davidhuff4562 I would have been more worried about the cane landing on it's target. Would do serious damage if struck too high base of spine. In any case I don't think a run-up made much difference to the force of the stroke. My strokes were just as powerful without a run. Also was over quicker. Only 5-6 seconds between each stroke. Know how painful lower strokes are. I used to be finished off with one on crease. Was the most painful stroke, and when tried to sit down had to keep moving around but difficult to escape that pain. Was mainly cane for me but got slipper as well. Was regularly thrashed. The odd whack at home but most at school.
