This is how they punish students in swedish schools even today. They have to kiss the hand of the teacher after acknowledging that the teacher loves them.
We still have a paddle/leather strap (depending on what you did) but kissing the hand of the person is just creepy. If the teacher love you they can make an effort to show you instead of you kissing them. Kissing their hand just seems odd. I know some schools make you say thank you after and that doesn’t seem as bad.

In Singaporean 🇸🇬 schools, student leave their trousers on to be caned on the pants instead of the bare buttocks to prevent disgrace from happening!
