A Tour of Texas - Hiking Big Bend & Mexican Border Roadtrip

  • Join me for a tour of Texas, from the Gulf of Mexico to a hike in Big Bend NP, via a cruise along the Mexican boarder. www.sintax77.com
For this adventure, I’ll be travelling (via air) from Philadelphia to San Antonio, Texas in mid-May. After landing, the plan will be to grab a rental car and immediately travel 7 hours west, following a route along the Mexican boarder, to Big Bend National Park. Big Bend holds the distinction as America’s largest protected swath of Chihuahuan desert. Another of Big Bend’s unique distinctions is that around 118 miles of the Mexican / American boarder lay within it’s boundaries, hugging the deepest point of the Rio Grande.
My plan is to arrive at Big Bend National Park before sunset on day one and make a mad scramble for the Window Trail, which is said to boast some amazing sunset views across the Chisos Mountains. Assuming I pull this off, my next task will be to awake just before that burning globe comes back around again, and make way for the tallest peak amongst the Chisos Range - Emory Peak. After that - a quick retreat to the car, a modest rehydration and clean up, and then it will time to hop back in the rental car once again.
Just to keep thing interesting, my plan will be to take an alternate 7 hour route, further to the north, to return to San Antonio. At that point, I’ll scoop up Sara and head an additional 3 hours west to the Gulf of Mexico. More specifically, the Corpus Christi region, for some beach front camping, which would be a first for us.
Of course, all of these plans assume that everything goes as expected. I mean, they never get unexpected or sever weather on the Gulf Coast, do they? Wait… do they?

This was one long Sin-Chats episode with a day hike, a windy beach, and a very un-Sintax'esque ending... still enjoyed it.

Another hugely enjoyable video from Sintax! This one is perfect in that we get the solo experience (personally my favorite genre of your videos because we feel like we are with you, instead of watching you with others), but then we get Sara and you clowning around together as well!

First off I have been watching your videos for over a year now and am never disappointed. Second Kudos on you and Sarah for making best out of your trip despite weather, limited time, many miles to cover in a "clown car" and border patrol. Also, not sure if you know this channel but Adventure Archives uses the same type of music as you did when you were in the peak. I dig it! Lastly, I'm a flight attendant for Frontier Airlines and appreciate your use of our company. (We are making Philly one of our new bases within the next couple months. So more cheap flights out of Philadelphia :) )

As a Texan and Big Bend enthusiast, I can't wrap my head around driving all the way out there and then cutting the time short to visit the gulf coast (yikes!). I enjoyed the video but it broke my heart a little seeing you rush through so much vast beauty. I implore you to come back and at least visit Santa Elena canyon.

You did a great job with the editing! I enjoyed watching this road trip adventure. It may not have worked out for camping with the full campground and nasty storm at the beach. It still looked like you and then Sara had a good time. Awesome sunset and views from the summit. I like how you have been making other types of videos and not only backpacking. Although the backpacking videos are still my favorite! Excellent Video!!

Absolutely stunning views at the peak. If you're inclined to be near Corpus again go to the other side of the bay to Ingleside. Just a short dive and then ferry ride away is Port A. I always choose that in lieu of Padre. Go ahead and take the clown car on the beach there. The sand is hard and you'll be fine. I drive 15 hours straight through from here just to see the sun rise over the Gulf. You got me itchin' now !!!

You didn't mention it, but you passed by a very famous town. Langtry, Texas was the home of Judge Roy Bean, "The Law West of the Pecos". Named the town after the woman of his dreams, Lily Langtry. She never visited there in his lifetime, but did get there shortly after his death. They even made the story into a movie starring Paul Newman. :-) Great job editing, and I'm glad you got a chance to visit and backpack in the (arguably) most picturesque part of my home state. For a more woodsy experience you can always come back and hike the Lone Star Hiking Trail. Enjoyed this adventure quite a bit.

Your channel inspired me to "have fun out there". So last year I got to the top of Washington and a few other of the presidential peaks in NH plus I got out to Utah for Canyonlands and Arches. I booked my trip to Big Bend 2 weeks ago so I was glad to see you post this video. I'll be flying from Boston to El Paso on Super Bowl Sunday. I'll have a shorter drive than yours but totally looking forward to my first adventure for 2017. I had a similar experience with glowing eyes but I was in Zion. I was hiking the canyon overlook trail and when I got to the part that goes through the small cave I looked up to see two eyes staring at me. My heart sunk, thinking it was a mountain lion and I was in deep trouble. After a second I realized it was a bighorn sheep just lying down, not scared at all of me. It was quite remarkable to get so close, I was within 15 ft and I went around him while he just watched me. On the way back I saw another bighorn sheep, this one was with a baby though.

I envy your making it to Emory Peak. I've been out there 3 out of the last four years, intending to hike to Emory Peak. Couldn't get my daughter out of bed early enough to get started on one trip, then fiance was too afraid to hike it on another. If you ever make it back, drive the Presidio Highway (TX Hwy 170) from Terlingua to Presidio through the Big Bend Ranch State Park, about 70 mile trip. It is by far more beautiful that the National Park. I love Big Bend, but the mountains miles apart in the park, where on the Highway, the mountains are right next to each other. I've always taken my motorcycle, it will always by far the most beautiful and fun ride for me. Next time I get out to Big Bend, I will get to the top of Emory Peak, even if I have to go alone!

Great video. I have been to Big Bend many times. Lived in Odessa,Texas and would go 3 or 4 times a year. I have done the car camping some but love the camping alone the trails best. Parents use to take me there back in the 60's when I was a baby ( to young to remember, but have pictures ). They use to have a huge cable across the window because some people got to close to the edge. You need to bring Sara back with you when you can stay longer and do some of the other trails. They are all so beautiful. The South Rim trail is fun to do. Thanks for the video. Brought back good memories.

I hiked in Big Bend a couple of times in the early 1980's. Not enough black bears and mountain lions there back then to warrant warning signs and bear boxes. Good to see their numbers have increased. It is a beautiful park, and lots of beautiful places to see in Texas. Good tip on the water. We were in the park in January and March. It could get warm then. I can just imagine how warm it is in May. hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.....

What a great little trip. You and Sara are a good couple; you got to see some special things, and still made the best of your beach trip. I've almost watched all of your videos now, and I've watched a few more than once. As I have said before, I am not a backpacker, but your vids have encouraged me to buy a little portable saw to use at my cedar chalet in the Smokies to cut up some of the wood from fallen trees just lying around the yard, instead of buying it all, because I do love my roaring wood fire in my big stone fireplace, in the cabin of course! As I have enjoyed your videos so much, and they are so out of character for me, I'd love to support your trips in some small way. Have you thought of opening a Patreon account as so many of the you tube music commenters have done? That way I, and others, could sign up to donate as little as $5 to $10 a month toward your adventures, and after awhile, this could mount up. Think about it.

At the end when you two were in the hotel in Corpus you were cooking hot dogs😀 You always talk about having a cheeseburger. Just below the hotel on screen is a Whataburger. I hope you tried one. Texas’ gift the the cheeseburger world.

I car camp all over Turtle Island (where settlers call the US) and then backpack on trails if I decide to stop. That's the best way, so no worries about car camping. When you have to make time, we do what we have to do. They still beat dirty motels.

You sir are badass! I've done the beach camping on mustang island and it was mind blowing, can't wait to go to the big bend though. Hats off to you for putting together a great video.

Thanks, we really wanted to check the beach camping off of our to-do list, but that weather - wow. One of these days though!

Ya that sucks. hopefully you'll make a video of it when you do it. I really liked your commentary and the editing. if you're looking for another spot to camp in Texas check out Enchanted rock.
