  • When it comes to villains in anime and shonen, Hao Asakura from Shaman King doesn't get mentioned nearly as much as he should. So here's a video talking about what makes him such a great villain!

You know a villain is broken when he has such a big influence in the story and even if the growth of the main characters.
The main cast got a huge power boost by reading Hao's book and training 1 day in Hell (when Hao himself trained for 500 years).
Anna took control of the Shinigammi witch are Hao's demons to begin with.
Every other strong character of the show is somehow related to Hao in some way.

It probably would've been worth mentioning how the other main characters have gone through similar circumstances to Hao. Like Anna with her mind reading, and even in the first chapter, though less consequential, how Yoh's hesitant to let people know he can talk to ghosts for fear of being "othered" as well as Yoh's Zero Story, in the beginning Ren is basically mini-Hao in his motivation just a loner version. Although they're not near as powerful a lot of them could've gone the same train of thought Hao did so it makes sense why Yoh dealt with him the way he did.

    • @ReelJV

Yoh's heart never truly wavered whereas Hao's did - and its directly as a result of Yoh. In the end, Hao succumbs to his wavering heart.

If someone out there is watching this video and hasn't finished SK's manga yet, totally don't read this because it's all endgame spoilers, yeehaw.
Part of what makes SK great to me is that they're like damn, how do we beat Hao?
Then they realize they can't... so they just love him instead.
The fact that it works, that this guy who has been lonely for a thousand years and figured everyone would continue to hate him and try to kill him forever/until he became King, ended the series off with the cast realizing that fighting hatred with more hatred wasn't working and Hao accepting all the people who accepted him makes it amazing to me. That the whole main cast collectively agreed to try give him love instead of hate, and that Yoh actually had an impact on him and began to form a relationship with him that wasn't just enemies and "I have to beat him to become the Shaman King". Most Shonen series are all about the brawls and "who will win", and the main protaginst somehow becoming stronger than the antagonist, but in this case, even the characters are forced to acknowledge they can't physically defeat Hao. They realize that, with the way power levels work in this series, that there's no actual way to kill him because he'll just reincarnate again even stronger every time, and even without that being their hindsight understanding, they all are forced to acknowledged that just in his third lifetime alone that he's stronger than all of them anyway.
Usually Shonen series just end with the main protagonist becoming more OP than the antagonist and just outright killing them. Shaman King makes it look like Yoh is going to win and be the strongest character, but not only is he not the strongest among his friends (he's outdone in furyoku level by both Horohoro and, by a long shot, Chocolove by the end of the series), he never gains power anywhere near as insane as Hao. Eventually Yoh realizes the root of the whole problem by getting to know his supposed enemy, goes against what his entire family wishes of him to do (which is to kill Hao), and gets on pretty decent terms with him all things considered. There's no rivalry between them at all and they're both pretty cordial with each other.
For me at least, the icing on all of it is that Yoh ends the series off by admitting he has similar feelings to Hao and, instead of acting spiteful for having lost the tournament, goes in the complete opposite direction of a typical Shonen and fully acknowledges Hao as his brother. There's no "hey cool what an awesome power up to defeat the villain!" moment like the OG anime decided to do (incorrectly no less, since the ending of the OG anime had nothing at all to do with furyoku and just did an outright total asspull to deal with Hao that had nothing to do with Shaman King whatsoever lol). They try to understand him instead, and it REALLY makes Yoh's mantra of "people who can see spirits can't be evil" come full circle. To Yoh, Hao was never evil. He did evil things, but Hao himself was never evil from Yoh's perspective.
Making the OP antagonist you can basically possibly make, admitting they can't be defeated and never using some crazy asspull move to /make/ them get defeated makes SK shine for me, but just as much if not more than that, it's that this supposed evil person actually fell victim to nothing short of love. It wasn't just the characters' decision to love him that solved things - it was the fact that Hao /never expected it/ and also /wanted/ it. They mention those characters couldn't have been in the Great Spirit if Hao didn't want them there. He also could have just went on with his plan to wipe out normal humans since nobody could have stopped him anymore by the end, but he dropped his plan of a thousand years and decided to see what the world could look like with these shamans who all chose to accept him as their King.
Let's be honest too, Chocolove wasn't much better IF any better than Hao at one point in his life, and he was able to be turned around and saved. I LOVE that they didn't abandon that idea with Hao, instead leveling him without physical power or brute force. Shaman King as a whole was also going in that direction with Hao the entire time, right from Yoh mentioning the thing about evil people and spirits in the first chapter/episode, all the way to the very end. All of it was sprinkled in and hidden well imo.
Good luck ever convincing me there's any better handling of any antagonist ever out there! 😂

maybe yoh actually had an impact on him bc hes his younger brother? anyways, poor hao grew up without love, got love for a while but the core of it was gone. the way hao used to be treated as a child is like society treating "ugly" people. they call them names, and basically break theyre mind and eventually leading to suicide. The manga portrays that society is cruel, and not everyone is bad, its just the way they grew up.

Loved your analysis. Will save this video because it was great, and also because of your comment. I feel like it will come in handy in the future when I'm trying to explain why Shaman King is so great. Even if sometimes seems a bit goofy with all the reveals that happen (Angels being cars, Chocolove acquiring Olmec spirits, Mikihisa dying because of a car accident, etc.) it's still a story so well built that it hurts that it remained as a cult series even with the 2021 remake.

Thank you so much for making this video! For a fan of Hao who already knows all this it was really fun to watch! I was laughing through the whole video, haha. Hao is truly the best villain of all time!
And special thanks for explaining Hao correctly!
Because I often see that many people in the fandom tend to believe that Hao's only problem is his mother's death in his first life. This opinion always confuses me every time I see it because it is so far from the truth. His mother's death is sure tragic, but if it were his only problem he would never become who he is.
In fact, the whole Mappa Douji special was mostly about Ohachiyo convincing little Hao that he is a human, while Hao believed himself to be a demon. Not only Hao was ostracized but also gaslighted to the degree of actually believing himself to be a demon. Being ostracized, which led him to gain the mind-reading ability, and then repeatedly seeing all the bad sides of humanity through this ability is definitely the main reason behind his behavior. His mother's death was why he was traumatized and left completely alone with those problems (since his mother was the only person who treated him nicely at that time), but definitely wasn't the main reason why he lost all belief in humanity.
Besides, let's not forget that even after losing his mind reading ability (which, by the way, happened earlier than his reunion with his mother, which proves his distrust towards humans was caused not by her death, but by ostracization) Hao still didn't change his opinion about humanity. So, I believe the main reason is actually the one told in the Osorezan arc - that he saw all the bad sides of humanity through his mind reading. And in the end, he stands by this opinion he formed through mind reading even after starting to trust others a little more.

Happy the video could bring you some joy :) You bring up a good point about what happens with Hao and his mind reading ability! I agree with you that Hao's views on humanity were caused by more than just what happened with his mom.

When someone wants me to explain who hao is, i tell them this:
"Hao is the *Madara* of the 'Shaman King' Universe, just more primal in his form of impact on the Story.
Instead of being intriduced in the last quarter of the Story he gets integrated into the story from the very beginning, both to maximize his connection to *it* and *its* Charakters.
He is built & explained from the grounds up, so he can be undertood by Charakters as well as the Reader because of that *AND* doesn't get cheap shot at the end just to find a way to get rid of him."

I love shaman king because all the characters are different. He is so interesting. And finally a villain not dumb, not weak, not loosing calm, a badass and lastly, AN AMAZING ANIME DESIGN( I’m obsessed with it) And he’s the strongest person in all of shaman king( he’s the same strength as Yoh at the end but still yoh still struggles) He’s quite kind on the most ridiculous stuff such as matamune or his brother ( not exactly but you get it), Yoh a chill protagonist who still does stuff for the sake for what he’s fighting for but still doesn’t get mad which makes hao interested in him. It’s the same with Anna. Finally not a softie inlove with Yoh. Sorry Tamao. But finally a serious Fiancé. Even Anna cares about Yoh winning the tournament more than Yoh. And she’s not scared. She could probably win against Hao Because of his pride. But that’s when he’s not full power. She’s not scared of slapping Hao with her legendary left hand 😱. And when Yoh quits the shaman fight, oh Yoh was dead. And the other characters are also unique. This anime is so underrated I’m mad 😡

Yoh isn't on the same level as Hao, even by the end. I would say that the gap between them became infinite. The only thing that saved Five Warriors from being annihilated by King is his heart. He didn't really want to destroy them, so, he couldn't. Great Spirits follow the real wish of it's holder.
So, if Hao did really want to annihilate Five Warriors, he would be able to do it.

Hao is charismatic because he was right.
By the spiritual laws, like being the caretakers of nature or the world and our brothers and sisters? By those standards that would make Hao "good" incarnate no matter how much we may see someone that capable and his intentions as a literal devil that would only be from modern man's worldview that he would be in the wrong.
Even his own nature as empath would suggest for him to be evil would be a reflection of a world that poisoned his very soul.

I liked them! The thing I'm most worried about for the future is the pacing since it's confirmed the anime has 52 episodes. I think information from the manga is handled well but I would like for the fights to be animated better in the future.
