Seems like Unohana is killing Zaraki and bringing him back to life, when she stabbed him he spat some blood and some of it hit Unohana on the face, after Zaraki "snapped out of it" he was no longer stabbed but Unohana still had the blood on her face. Just a guess.

So even if you say that TYBW Aizen is still as strong as Transcendent Aizen (which is false because TYBW Aizen fused with his Zanpakuto, meaning that he had achieved the pinnacle of Zanpakuto evolution), he'd still stomp Unohana who only scales to Aizen without the Hogyoku. Obviously Yhwach is a different story but Yhwach puts Aizen as one of the special threats while Unohana doesn't.

1) You can give up the title of Kenpachi without dying. There are actually three Kenpachi alive in this episode, and all of them are in Muken. Unahona (1st) gave up her position, another Kenpachi (8th) was imprisoned there centuries ago for a rebellion (his title was given to his lieutenant), and Zaraki killed the last active Kenpachi (the 10th). The thing is, there can only be one ACTIVE Kenpachi at any time. 2) "Before Zanpakuto" was a million years ago. Oetsu and the monk are OLD, to the point where Yamamoto was basically a fetus by comparison. There weren't even soul reapers back then, as the universe didn't look anything like it does now. I can't really give any detail on this without spoilers. 3) Unahona stabbing him was NOT an illusion. His blood was still on her face when he woke up, meaning that she actually stabbed him through the throat, then healed him back to full to continue their "training" (ie. her bringing him to the brink of death repeatedly). Also, if you think Unahona is scary now, this is her fighting in base form--unlike Zaraki, she has a shikai and a bankai that increase her powers tenfold over what she is like now. For perspective, her aggregate power score in the databooks is 540/600, compared with Yamamoto and Aizen at 560.
Yamamotos Age was never revealed only that he established the academy nearly a thousand years ago and that he foundet the system of the gotei 13. So he might have been old as stone as well^^
This was fairly early in the series so you may not remember it, but when we first met Kenpachi and he had a flashback of meeting Yachiru( his lieutenant) he gave her the name Yachiru because that was the name of the only person he ever respected

the running gag in the show and in the little skits (illustrated shinigami book) was: everybody was afraid of unohana with no explanation why. even the arrancar police chief noticed it and commanded his guys to leave her alone.
Two different people taking two routes to the same end goal in their past: getting to enjoy combat for eternity. She learned healing, and he self-imposed personal limitations.
That was the reason why Tenjiro the 0 squad captain who taught her the healing techniques told her “Now it’s not the time to be focusing on healing. You understand that Retsu”

Unohana being the first Kenpachi means all the rules were kind of established AFTER her. There were no rules when she was around so she gave it up and the next one took over. And yes...they were just throwing hands before Zanpakuto but that was a VERY long time ago.
kenpachi also gave the name yachiru to the lil pink hair girl that he’s around with. He said he named her of the person who he wanted to beat which is insane foreshadowing

Strangely, we know of 3 Kenpachi that currently exist at this point in the story. One is permanently in Muken. The other 2 are fighting each other in Muken. Unohana relinquished it to someone in Squad 11; that's how it passed down the line to Zaraki. I'll admit, I knew there was something going on when I first saw everyone afraid of Unohana. Like that's the reaction when you're suddenly around a killer/predator, and you're just hoping you're not on their radar.
Kenpachi is a title indeed it is give to the strongest and is gained by defeating/killing the holder if that title. Yachiru was the first and gave it up to the next person (for reasons that will be explained later/probably next episode) and so that title was passed according to the tradition until Zaraki took it from the last squad 11 Captain
Zaraki is the 11th Kenpachi(He killed a guy known as Kenpachi Kiganjo who as far as we know didnt know his Shikai or bankai) Unohana was the first Kenpachi and the First Captain of Squad 11.
A bit strange that they left zanjutsu untranslated in this episode tbh as i would assume a lot of people have no clue what it means... A translation that was used for the manga was "way of the sword" which i think is quite fitting.
It seems to be fairly common practice since the days of the Big 3 not to translate a lot of powers. I agree that it's not good practice. It puts more of the onus on the audience to research than should be there.

Exactly. It's a calculated risk, and there's no way to ever know if it's the right one. That's part of the awful responsibility Shunsui has to bear as the Captain-Commander. It shows how wise he is to challenge the traditions of Soul Society in order to ensure its survival. His pragmatism is part of what I love about him as a leader.
In case nobody else mentioned it already, and since they skipped it last episode, Pompadour Man’s hot spring healing was his big invention. The hot springs where Ichigo trained with Yoruichi(when we found out she was a she) were Urahara’s attempt at recreating them.
what she means by the flaw is that kenpachi has been mentally limiting himself because he was tired of destroying everyone he was near. Look at stark they were similar so powerful they were alone. He was strong enough just barely to win each of the battles he had been in because he limited himself. In truth he was so much stronger that the fights would have been over in seconds.
She abandoned her title as kenpachi after her fight with young zaraki 100+ years ago. Apparently she is the oldest among the Gotei 13 captains. She is the 1st Kenpachi, real name Retsu Unohana (Retsu means Violence)

Everyone is going on their training arc. There's chance the anime won't show everyone so I'll tell some that I remember: Hitsugaya back to basic in academy learning zanjutsu and all Soi Fon perfecting her Shunko Hisagi undergone bankai training with Kensei and the super leutenants Mashiro
People assume that Kenpachi means the shinigami who loves to fight or the strongest shinigami with intense bloodlust. Kenpachi means sword-eight or swordmaster in japanese. It basically means he/she is at the top when it comes to swordsmanship or battle prowess in general. You guys need to remember that Zanpakuto is never been there from the start. They started with swordplay before those shikai and bankai comes. If you get that title it literally means you're the strongest fighter without those magic or hax that's all.

Even the ones that aren't old enough have heard stories. In a world with a long enough history, stories like hers become myth and legend. The younger ones may not know why, but they can feel it. Just like Old Man Yama crushed Kyoraku's lieutenant with his spiritual pressure, less powerful Shinigami feel the killing intent of Unohana. If someone like that tells you to quit doing a thing, you're going to quit doing the thing because you don't want to die.
First of all Kenpachi is not a name but a title. The current kenpachi didnt have a name that s why his "name" is Zaraki Kenpachi or Kenpachi of Zaraki in some translations. Kenpachi is a title and Zaraki is the name of the place he came from

Unohana is the most legendary, ancient and powerful captain right now. She is simply extraordinary and unbelievable! Wow, her extreme superiority to Zaraki is clear, even when RESURRECTS him to keep fighting and evolving, until he gets where the Gotei "needs". In himself he did not have the slightest conditions to defeat Unohana, she is the one who surrenders and lets herself be defeated without any resistance in the end because she no longer has any desire to continue because there is no one worthy of fighting her. The immensity of her power is SURREAL!
It’s either you kill a Kenpachi, give up on that role or getting killed by anything that’s not a soul reaper, than the vice captain of that Kenpachi becomes the Kenpachi. As far as I know.

The "flaw" of zaraki is that hes always giving handicaps on his enemies to fight them longer, while he can be stronger than everytime he fights... The reason why retsu commended him on fighting her without that power-limiting eyepatch..
I know this is late news but one other reason that SS needs Kenpachi is because the Quincies are so strong, that they need someone with an unbroken spirit no matter the result since Kenpachi lives on to either kill or be killed and as for Unohana, the word 'criminal' is much more worse than what the Head Captain did to Yhwach when he was much weaker.

Yes she's strong but she's still relative to Aizen without the Hogyoku. And Base Aizen is far below Transcendent Aizen. So even if you say that TYBW Aizen is still as strong as Transcendent Aizen (which is false because TYBW Aizen fused with his Zanpakuto, meaning that he had achieved the pinnacle of Zanpakuto evolution), he'd still stomp Unohana who only scales to Aizen without the Hogyoku. Obviously Yhwach is a different story but Yhwach puts Aizen as one of the special threats while Unohana doesn't.

So fun seeing anime onlys reactions
1) You can give up the title of Kenpachi without dying. There are actually three Kenpachi alive in this episode, and all of them are in Muken. Unahona (1st) gave up her position, another Kenpachi (8th) was imprisoned there centuries ago for a rebellion (his title was given to his lieutenant), and Zaraki killed the last active Kenpachi (the 10th). The thing is, there can only be one ACTIVE Kenpachi at any time.
2) "Before Zanpakuto" was a million years ago. Oetsu and the monk are OLD, to the point where Yamamoto was basically a fetus by comparison. There weren't even soul reapers back then, as the universe didn't look anything like it does now. I can't really give any detail on this without spoilers.
3) Unahona stabbing him was NOT an illusion. His blood was still on her face when he woke up, meaning that she actually stabbed him through the throat, then healed him back to full to continue their "training" (ie. her bringing him to the brink of death repeatedly). Also, if you think Unahona is scary now, this is her fighting in base form--unlike Zaraki, she has a shikai and a bankai that increase her powers tenfold over what she is like now. For perspective, her aggregate power score in the databooks is 540/600, compared with Yamamoto and Aizen at 560.
Yamamotos Age was never revealed only that he established the academy nearly a thousand years ago and that he foundet the system of the gotei 13. So he might have been old as stone as well^^

This was fairly early in the series so you may not remember it, but when we first met Kenpachi and he had a flashback of meeting Yachiru( his lieutenant) he gave her the name Yachiru because that was the name of the only person he ever respected

Unohana being the first Kenpachi means all the rules were kind of established AFTER her. There were no rules when she was around so she gave it up and the next one took over.
And yes...they were just throwing hands before Zanpakuto but that was a VERY long time ago.

Strangely, we know of 3 Kenpachi that currently exist at this point in the story. One is permanently in Muken. The other 2 are fighting each other in Muken. Unohana relinquished it to someone in Squad 11; that's how it passed down the line to Zaraki.
I'll admit, I knew there was something going on when I first saw everyone afraid of Unohana. Like that's the reaction when you're suddenly around a killer/predator, and you're just hoping you're not on their radar.

Kenpachi is a title indeed it is give to the strongest and is gained by defeating/killing the holder if that title.
Yachiru was the first and gave it up to the next person (for reasons that will be explained later/probably next episode) and so that title was passed according to the tradition until Zaraki took it from the last squad 11 Captain
Apparently there is one other way for the title to move:
You can be stripped of it. There's one former Kenpachi that is permanently in Muken.

A bit strange that they left zanjutsu untranslated in this episode tbh as i would assume a lot of people have no clue what it means... A translation that was used for the manga was "way of the sword" which i think is quite fitting.
It seems to be fairly common practice since the days of the Big 3 not to translate a lot of powers. I agree that it's not good practice. It puts more of the onus on the audience to research than should be there.

It's true that they need all the strong people they can get but the problem is, Kenpachi is never gonna awaken his true power if he doesn't overcome his self impose seal on himself. And the only way to get over that seal is Zaraki growing the balls to finally kill Unohana.
Exactly. It's a calculated risk, and there's no way to ever know if it's the right one. That's part of the awful responsibility Shunsui has to bear as the Captain-Commander. It shows how wise he is to challenge the traditions of Soul Society in order to ensure its survival. His pragmatism is part of what I love about him as a leader.

In case nobody else mentioned it already, and since they skipped it last episode, Pompadour Man’s hot spring healing was his big invention. The hot springs where Ichigo trained with Yoruichi(when we found out she was a she) were Urahara’s attempt at recreating them.
He did pretty good, all considered. I think he'd have killed Ichigo if it'd been a full reproduction.
Now since I actually caught up to bleach I can finally watch these reactions 😃
what she means by the flaw is that kenpachi has been mentally limiting himself because he was tired of destroying everyone he was near. Look at stark they were similar so powerful they were alone. He was strong enough just barely to win each of the battles he had been in because he limited himself. In truth he was so much stronger that the fights would have been over in seconds.

People assume that Kenpachi means the shinigami who loves to fight or the strongest shinigami with intense bloodlust. Kenpachi means sword-eight or swordmaster in japanese. It basically means he/she is at the top when it comes to swordsmanship or battle prowess in general. You guys need to remember that Zanpakuto is never been there from the start. They started with swordplay before those shikai and bankai comes. If you get that title it literally means you're the strongest fighter without those magic or hax that's all.

Even the ones that aren't old enough have heard stories. In a world with a long enough history, stories like hers become myth and legend. The younger ones may not know why, but they can feel it. Just like Old Man Yama crushed Kyoraku's lieutenant with his spiritual pressure, less powerful Shinigami feel the killing intent of Unohana. If someone like that tells you to quit doing a thing, you're going to quit doing the thing because you don't want to die.
The hot spring heals you so fast that normally it would just decompose anybody, thats why 2 guy needed protective gear to not turn into a compost

Unohana is the most legendary, ancient and powerful captain right now. She is simply extraordinary and unbelievable! Wow, her extreme superiority to Zaraki is clear, even when RESURRECTS him to keep fighting and evolving, until he gets where the Gotei "needs". In himself he did not have the slightest conditions to defeat Unohana, she is the one who surrenders and lets herself be defeated without any resistance in the end because she no longer has any desire to continue because there is no one worthy of fighting her. The immensity of her power is SURREAL!

I know this is late news but one other reason that SS needs Kenpachi is because the Quincies are so strong, that they need someone with an unbroken spirit no matter the result since Kenpachi lives on to either kill or be killed and as for Unohana, the word 'criminal' is much more worse than what the Head Captain did to Yhwach when he was much weaker.
