@@mastermax2792 it's because this is the first time the title Kenpachi will ever be officially given to zaraki, I think Unohana never really bothered to take on the other Kenpachis because she didn't care about them, she only cares about zaraki. It's like she never acknowledged them as her successors
All I can think about is how Unohana confronted the executioner squad in Hueco Mundo. She basically said "I'm here to heal, as long as you don't interrupt that, I wont fight" and the guy was like "Seems like we have a sensible captain here" and left. You know he didn't want that smoke. XD

Hollows of that level are not suicidal. They recognize when something or someone is out of their league. Looking back, it makes me think the head of the executioner squad sensed her reiatsu and decided it was not worth dying over.
No captain dared to fight Unohana. So much from Kenny's admiration, he named lieutenant Yachiru after her.
I wish tite hadn't killed Yachiru (Retsu) that fast, it would've been great seeing more of her

- It was removed from the last episode but you learn that the springs that Urahara created are based on Tenjiros (Like the Spring we saw when Yoruichi revealed her human form that Ichigo was recovering in)
-Unohana being a Kenpachi was heavily foreshadowed throughout the entire series, it's the reason why squad 11 members were so afraid of her, It's why Aizen knew she'd catch on to his lie, and why even Captains like Shunsui and Ukitake feared her. (Another cool bit is that Aizen tried to seal Unohana and Kenpachi in Hueco Mundo to avoid them until he was immortal)
-This is our 1st time hearing Unohana's real first name, which is Yachiru, the same name Kenpachi gave to his Lieutenant when he found her. If you go back to that scene, Kenpachi said it's the name of someone he admired. Unohana's fake name was even a Hint "Retsu" means Violent in Japanese
-Buff Kon was another comedy bit removed from the last episode, so it may feel a bit random here.
-Given Kirio's words before they left her Palace, we now know that every Squad 0 member has done something that hugely affects how the Soul Society operates. Kirio made Gikon or Artificial Souls, and she says Ouetsu Made Zanpaktou, it's cool to wonder what the others invented.
-It's cool to see the politics with Shunsui, it shows a stark difference between him and Yama. Yama simply upheld the law, as long as peace was the goal he honestly didn't care much...but Shunsui is a bit different, more experimental, and he's willing to do things that Yama would never do.

Seems like Unohana is killing Zaraki and bringing him back to life, when she stabbed him he spat some blood and some of it hit Unohana on the face, after Zaraki "snapped out of it" he was no longer stabbed but Unohana still had the blood on her face. Just a guess.

@@enitsirkgemps6266 Pretty much. Zaraki is not the brightest. And coming back from unconsciousness and near death doesn't leave your brain in the best state. He keeps having a moment of grogginess, especially the first time.
The Unohana reveal has been hinted at since VERY early on in the series.
1. Everyone, even Captains powerful as Shunsui and Ukitake are shown to be afraid of her.
2. Her fake name, Retsu, means "violent" or fierce", hinting at her true nature.
3. In the SS arc, she is the first Captain to notice something is off about Aizen's death (even while under complete hypnosis. When she arrives in the Underground Meeting assembly area after Aizen waxes Hitugaya, he acknowledges that he thought she would be showing up soon.
4. If you recall Kenpachi's backstory flashback from the SS arc, he tells Yachiru that he named her after the one person he admires and respects. The First Kenpachi, Unohana Yachiru is that person.
5. Even from the first databooks, her total combat ability score was 540/600, which is second only to Aizen and Yamamoto who both have a total of 560/600. Her special ability was also listed as kenjutsu, NOT healing.

To become a Kenpachi you need to kill the current Kenpachi to get the title.
Not defeat, you have to kill the current Kenpachi
Every other squad is to defeat or archive bankai
But for squad 11 u need to kill the current Kenpachi in the presence of 200 or more squad members, it's an iron clad law

In order to inherit the title you have to kill the previous Kenpachi. Still, there were 2 exceptions (that we know) that broke the line. The 1st to the 2nd, and the 8th to the 9th (counting novels as canon).

1) You can give up the title of Kenpachi without dying. There are actually three Kenpachi alive in this episode, and all of them are in Muken. Unahona (1st) gave up her position, another Kenpachi (8th) was imprisoned there centuries ago for a rebellion (his title was given to his lieutenant), and Zaraki killed the last active Kenpachi (the 10th). The thing is, there can only be one ACTIVE Kenpachi at any time.
2) "Before Zanpakuto" was a million years ago. Oetsu and the monk are OLD, to the point where Yamamoto was basically a fetus by comparison. There weren't even soul reapers back then, as the universe didn't look anything like it does now. I can't really give any detail on this without spoilers.
3) Unahona stabbing him was NOT an illusion. His blood was still on her face when he woke up, meaning that she actually stabbed him through the throat, then healed him back to full to continue their "training" (ie. her bringing him to the brink of death repeatedly). Also, if you think Unahona is scary now, this is her fighting in base form--unlike Zaraki, she has a shikai and a bankai that increase her powers tenfold over what she is like now. For perspective, her aggregate power score in the databooks is 540/600, compared with Yamamoto and Aizen at 560.
Yamamotos Age was never revealed only that he established the academy nearly a thousand years ago and that he foundet the system of the gotei 13. So he might have been old as stone as well^^

This was fairly early in the series so you may not remember it, but when we first met Kenpachi and he had a flashback of meeting Yachiru( his lieutenant) he gave her the name Yachiru because that was the name of the only person he ever respected

Yes she's strong but she's still relative to Aizen without the Hogyoku. And Base Aizen is far below Transcendent Aizen. So even if you say that TYBW Aizen is still as strong as Transcendent Aizen (which is false because TYBW Aizen fused with his Zanpakuto, meaning that he had achieved the pinnacle of Zanpakuto evolution), he'd still stomp Unohana who only scales to Aizen without the Hogyoku. Obviously Yhwach is a different story but Yhwach puts Aizen as one of the special threats while Unohana doesn't.

@@LeonardWashington1989 They probably will, or really extend the fight a lot, considering its only 2 chapters adaptation by the look of things or maybe 3 or more if we're lucky... since this episode even covered 4-5 chapters... then take what I say with a grain of salt... I'm just going off of chapter names per episode, for a few of them, they ended it at the chapter name.

Unohana being the first Kenpachi means all the rules were kind of established AFTER her. There were no rules when she was around so she gave it up and the next one took over.
And yes...they were just throwing hands before Zanpakuto but that was a VERY long time ago.
Makes a whole lot of sense why you'd set up rules for that sort of thing after her.

kenpachi also gave the name yachiru to the lil pink hair girl that he’s around with. He said he named her of the person who he wanted to beat which is insane foreshadowing

Kenpachi is a title indeed it is give to the strongest and is gained by defeating/killing the holder if that title.
Yachiru was the first and gave it up to the next person (for reasons that will be explained later/probably next episode) and so that title was passed according to the tradition until Zaraki took it from the last squad 11 Captain
Apparently there is one other way for the title to move:
You can be stripped of it. There's one former Kenpachi that is permanently in Muken.

Strangely, we know of 3 Kenpachi that currently exist at this point in the story. One is permanently in Muken. The other 2 are fighting each other in Muken. Unohana relinquished it to someone in Squad 11; that's how it passed down the line to Zaraki.
I'll admit, I knew there was something going on when I first saw everyone afraid of Unohana. Like that's the reaction when you're suddenly around a killer/predator, and you're just hoping you're not on their radar.

He did not imagine it, Unohana stabbed his throat and basically killed him, and just quickly healed him so they can keep fighting.
Zaraki is the 11th Kenpachi(He killed a guy known as Kenpachi Kiganjo who as far as we know didnt know his Shikai or bankai) Unohana was the first Kenpachi and the First Captain of Squad 11.
In case nobody else mentioned it already, and since they skipped it last episode, Pompadour Man’s hot spring healing was his big invention. The hot springs where Ichigo trained with Yoruichi(when we found out she was a she) were Urahara’s attempt at recreating them.
He did pretty good, all considered. I think he'd have killed Ichigo if it'd been a full reproduction.

A bit strange that they left zanjutsu untranslated in this episode tbh as i would assume a lot of people have no clue what it means... A translation that was used for the manga was "way of the sword" which i think is quite fitting.
It seems to be fairly common practice since the days of the Big 3 not to translate a lot of powers. I agree that it's not good practice. It puts more of the onus on the audience to research than should be there.
the running gag in the show and in the little skits (illustrated shinigami book) was: everybody was afraid of unohana with no explanation why. even the arrancar police chief noticed it and commanded his guys to leave her alone.
what she means by the flaw is that kenpachi has been mentally limiting himself because he was tired of destroying everyone he was near. Look at stark they were similar so powerful they were alone. He was strong enough just barely to win each of the battles he had been in because he limited himself. In truth he was so much stronger that the fights would have been over in seconds.
Unohana is a savage I love her badass energy, she was an OG after all. Gonna be sad if either one of them dies.

It's true that they need all the strong people they can get but the problem is, Kenpachi is never gonna awaken his true power if he doesn't overcome his self impose seal on himself. And the only way to get over that seal is Zaraki growing the balls to finally kill Unohana.
Exactly. It's a calculated risk, and there's no way to ever know if it's the right one. That's part of the awful responsibility Shunsui has to bear as the Captain-Commander. It shows how wise he is to challenge the traditions of Soul Society in order to ensure its survival. His pragmatism is part of what I love about him as a leader.

People assume that Kenpachi means the shinigami who loves to fight or the strongest shinigami with intense bloodlust. Kenpachi means sword-eight or swordmaster in japanese. It basically means he/she is at the top when it comes to swordsmanship or battle prowess in general. You guys need to remember that Zanpakuto is never been there from the start. They started with swordplay before those shikai and bankai comes. If you get that title it literally means you're the strongest fighter without those magic or hax that's all.

Even the ones that aren't old enough have heard stories. In a world with a long enough history, stories like hers become myth and legend. The younger ones may not know why, but they can feel it. Just like Old Man Yama crushed Kyoraku's lieutenant with his spiritual pressure, less powerful Shinigami feel the killing intent of Unohana. If someone like that tells you to quit doing a thing, you're going to quit doing the thing because you don't want to die.

People should remember that "Kenpachi" is a title for the one who is the "strongest" and becomes the captain of squad 11, so his name is "Zaraki" because, from now on as revealed, we can "officially" call Unohana "Kenpachi" as well 😁

If we ever get to meet all the previous Kenpachi, it HAS to be in the Hell arc. Imagine they all try to kill Zaraki in order to take his title for good.
The point is, Kenpachi Zaraki IS the strongest. He is stronger than Unohana, and she knew it from her first battle with him. The only one who would not admit it, is Zaraki himself, and that's the point of their battle, Zaraki has to understand is role as "Kenpachi" and stop limiting himself for the admiration for the woman he loves, in his twisted crazy way
@Michele Dell'Oglio I wouldn't even say it's crazy or twisted. It makes perfect sense to have a role model as that kind of warrior. The only person that could fight equal to you in combat with either of these two is rare. You'd be a fool not to want to keep that. It's why he speaks so fondly about how Yachiru got her name. Unohana really was the most motivated to do her duty even though she knew what would happen. I know this is late news but one other reason that SS needs Kenpachi is because the Quincies are so strong, that they need someone with an unbroken spirit no matter the result since Kenpachi lives on to either kill or be killed and as for Unohana, the word 'criminal' is much more worse than what the Head Captain did to Yhwach when he was much weaker.
We finally get to see the true Mommy Unohana, and she's absolutely terrifying. Her voice when she gets serious is chilling.
