Black AF History: The Un-Whitewashed Story of America

  • In Black AF History, Michael Harriot presents a more accurate version of American history. Combining unapologetically provocative storytelling with meticulous research based on primary sources as well as the work of pioneering Black historians, scholars, and journalists, Harriot removes the white sugarcoating from the American story, placing Black people squarely at the center. With incisive wit, Harriot speaks hilarious truth to oppressive power, subverting conventional historical narratives with little-known stories about the experiences of Black Americans.
Michael Harriot is a columnist at theGrio.com where he covers the intersection of race, politics, and culture. His work has appeared in the Washington Post, The Atlantic, NBC, BET, and on his mother’s refrigerator. He is a political commentator on MSNBC and CNN and has been honored by the National Association of Black Journalists for commentary, digital commentary, and TV news writing. Michael is the creator and cohost of the podcast Drapetomaniax: Unshackled History, produced in partnership with Pharrel's OTHERtone.

In 2019, I bought the book "Black People Invented Everything." It was really eye-opening. There is a chapter in that book that is titled, "Black People Invented Everything But White People Invented The Patent Office." It tells you everything you need to know about how the history of our contributions to this country are told.

and you believe that? Ten times as many slaves went to Brazil, what did they build or invent down there? How about Haiti, the richest island in the world until the brother's slaughtered all the whites and burned down the buildings. Why would you burn the buildings down when your plan is to take over the country? Pretty dumb, but blacks lack foresight which is why they can't plan for the future. Asians work hard and save, blacks hardly work and spend all their money on crap for their image. So the blacks in America invented everything. Why haven't the billion Africans in Africa build anything, Sub-Saharan. Hell, black kids poo on the beach in Haiti because blacks can't build an out house. Yeah, blame it on the patent office.

My brother, we are kicking against the pricks. There's a distruction that is coming that would take the coming of the Messiah to save us. Haiti's fate wasn't an accident because they had rebeled against their task master to the point that they had overcame them to void their punishment but because of disobeying God's. And to do so without retribution was making God a lier. What I am saying, it wasn't because of our tenacity or resilience that we hadn't cease to be a people but because of God's promised to Abraham, our forefather. God said only if they could remove sun and moon from the sky then and only then we would cease to be nation before Him.

This is a very necessary conversation that can be a conduit towards critical thought on family members reading together and recognizing themselves as the primary educators of their children vs waiting for truths to be told in ANY supposed learning institution. ALL humans living in this 21st century need to surrender themselves to intuiting for truth, to lean into the change that is happening as we view this eye-opening description of stories from times before. Why do so many of us assume that other people don't do many of the things we do? How do we know how they are at funerals? Why must we continue this charade that there is one way all Black people are? We arrived here often as different people , and have become more so since. If so many of us are willing to accept that trauma can be passed down through genes, what do we expect genes to do in their normal function? Many of us have significant genes other than Black genes. Why wouldn't they also manifest themselves in ways other than pigment? We propagate stereotypes while complaining about other people placing them on us.

Ok, good to see there were others like me. Back in the late 60s our parents got us the Black History Board Game featured in Ebony and Jet. We loved it and it led to most of us to dig deep for more. Oddly enough in Ohio those of us who were lucky went to a Friends School and boy those Quakers sure didnt hold anything back. They taught us we had the same enemy as they in the English slaver. Amish, Mennonites, all german Baptist fled from them as they were being killed in Germany. The church is a beast and will kill to get its way. that made us understand why our history was hidden. I would not respect whitey if he didnt try to hide it. Well Done MH you got it to the young folk and thats a blessing.Maybe we can get our black pride back before the 1980s set us back so hard there was no one to teach the folks we are GREAT. Like when Hannibal the warrior told Ceser when asked if he thought he was a good warrior. Hannibal said of course, I set the template as there were none before me. Europe asked Africa to civilize it because Africa invented civilization because we were the first Humans to walk upright and think. Never forget, whitey was still slowly evolving when we had empires

Did Michael say when people talk about reparations they only talk about slavery and not Jim Crow and all of the continuing injustices against ADOS? The intellectual abilities of Yvette Carnell and Antonio Moore, the creators of the ADOS movement, expanded our justice claim for reparations to also include the Jim Crow era, subsequent and continuing injustices. He spoke of intellectual theft while committing it himself. This is wild AF. Then he tries to make an argument that reparations in America should not be exclusive to the descendants of those who were slaves in America which is contrary to ados' position. Wild AF for sure.

Yeah, they refuse to operate in good faith. The ease in which they outright lie about the ADOS position let's you know they have no intention of every having a conversation with Antonio or Yvette, let alone be in the same room. Tiffany Cross has been taking shots at the ADOS movement for years.

Our differences as people are not problematic as long as we understand sometimes it’s cultural and be okay with this and still respect the beauty of difference, not make it “foreign” and not use the word different as insulting as we can weaponize words that then hurt. So, I have heard of this book often on a radio program that I listen to, but have yet to get. I’m interested to read history because I am guilty of not remembering some historical facts because life gets busy. When she asked about why we represent a small % in America, yet are emulated. Well, that requires big ears and a big heart to care enough to accept on all sides of the color spectrum. How do you know so much and still not walk through life angry? Understanding that the reasons of this type of hierarchy in some spaces is on a spiritual, psychological, biological, economical level. It’s also a mindset that requires a person to re-and de-program themself out of, with tools of knowing how to know thy self. This is a conversation that will be on-going until the Messiah returns. Also, last thing, knowing thyself could mean…while always loving the musical Genius of Erykah Badu, you can also appreciate and listen to and sing along to the musical talent of Taylor Swift😊.
