As I understand it Nakayama was unemployed when the JKA Dojo opened and it was decided that he would be “hired” to keep the doors open during the day until regular workers got home from work. He became the daytime instructor by default.

Nakayama was not a founding father he was a good master and did a lot to promote Shotokan in the west but as much as he gave he took away a lot in promoting competition and taking control of Shotokan there was a lot of politics in the fifties and sixties after the war. This statement is not to degrade his accomplishments but there were many senior karateka at the time who could have continued the art on with many contributions. The Fifth Dan was the highest grade Funakushi ever awarded.
