Where was Kanazawa Hirokazu shihan? I'd known him as well as a couple of the men featured here, since 1971 after meeting him at the Crystal Palace in London and assisted him in a number of his training sessions in the south of the UK over quite a few years. The last time we met was just outside Milton Keynes in around 2005 and I was proud to call him my friend. He had an unnerving control over his qi and had a story about how, when young, somebody was contemplating pushing him into a swimming pool whilst Hiro was not looking. Without turning around, he told the chap that it might be better for him were he not to try anything. Hiro was god-like to all of his students and I was deeply saddened when he died just over three years ago. Terry O'Neill is somebody also worth a place on this list - a phenomenal karateka.
My father Colin Brown trained with him at crystal palace. Colin is facing a very different battle right now. I never tire of hearing stories of the great man.
@@brucelevine6517 frank was a scary fighting machine at an entirely different level than most other competitors. I wish I would be able to see a match between Frank Smith and Lyoto Machida with them both in their prime. It can never happen; they are from different eras but that would have been one hell of a match. I was in a class taught by Nishiyama at the annual San Diego summer class. Frank Smith was called on to free spar. It was so violent that my girlfriend started crying and she wasn't prone to cry. I enjoyed it and was happy that I didn't have to go up against him. She would have really cried had he kicked my ass all over the place. But I was a kid so he might have given me a break, maybe and not destroyed me.
My list? Kanazawa Hirokazu, Nobuaki Kanazawa, Murakami Manabu, Inoue Sensei, Higaonna Sensei, Tanaka Masatoshi, and quite a few more. Sorry guys, no Brits amongst them.
This list sucks. Shiina in the top 5? Really? Kanazawa, Tanaka, Enoeda, Kagawa, Shirai, Yahara, Kase, Yamamoto, Kawawada, etc., all much better. Those I have named are also superior to Imamura. Your video is named top 5 best MASTERS, but then you focus on shiai results. Competition is a game that takes some of karate´s techniques and spirit, in a controlled environment, under safety rules. Competition is not equivalent to karate.
Mr. Pinto, as a American Shotokan Karate Instructor for 51 years, I sincerely Thank You for your very knowledgeable comment as to this videos list of who is the Top 5 Shotokan "Masters". During the late 1960's I had the honor of training under Shihan Ohshima. Later in life, I attended Yudansha grade only seminars conducted by the late Shihan Mori of New York City. (I am a New Yorker by birth). I began my Shotokan training in 1961 at 16 years of age. I am a Senior Citizen now, but I am in good health, and I stay physically fit. I am still instructing twice weekly. Again, I send You my heartfelt Thank You for Your impressive input concerning this video. OSU!
Completely agree. I knew Kanazawa Hirokazu as a friend, met Tanaka once or twice and Enoeda Keinosuke several times in the early/mid seventies. Both were real 'masters' of their craft. The others you mention I know only by reputation but going by that, I have to say that you're right. I also deplore the way competition karate has spoiled the art, taking it down to a level I'm not longer interested in practising it after more than 50 years of enjoyment.

KANAZAWA,TANAKA,KAGAWA,YAHARA,ENOEDA AND ASAI
Teruyuki Okazaki.
Though I am not professional, I am fascinated by OSAKA techniques of kata.
The man who Sensei Trimble is fighting is my old Sensei Chris Hallam, what a great teacher he was to me when I started out as a kid back in the 80’s.
He Still is a great sensei / teacher
VERY surprised to not see Terry O'Neill in this list??????
Yes, Terry also deserves a place.

Magnifico
Grazie mille maestri
WHAT? In the Top 5? Are you serious?

Sounds like vitamin B12 deficiency.
@@adamkane7513 yes yes karate induced vitamin deficiency perhaps right ???? I think you fought shiina before mo_/

Hirokazu Kanazawa is among top.

Shirai Case kawazoe Naito Himura Kanazawa
Considering the whole JKA team trained specifically to beat Frank Brennan....
yes but none of them had the Balls to fight Frank Smith from Nishyama's club in California Nakayama ordered him not to compeate
@@brucelevine6517frank was the best! Shameful he was order not to compete. Wish the two franks fought on the same team

And (ex)Jka Masahiko Tanaka the best!
Great sensei

Kanazawa Hirokazu, Nobuaki Kanazawa, Murakami Manabu, Inoue Sensei, Higaonna Sensei, Tanaka Masatoshi, and quite a few more.

Higaonna Sensei?
He's an Okinawan Goju Ryu teacher, not Shotokan.

Brennen.

1-Shihan Ohshima, 2-Shihan Nakayama, 3- Shihan Nishiyama, 4-Shihan Kanazawa, 5-Shihan Okazaki. Period.
NOT "Period" - You have forgotten the greatest non-Japanese - Terry O'Neill !!
y Mitsuo Inoue?
Kanasawa is one of a very good masters in shotokan karatedo
Where is Frank Brennan.?
It was clickbait for the uninitiated, obviously meant top five below Frank Brennan.
Any of this master will have their a**es kicked hard by MMA fighters...
Can u tell plz what the scope of karate in western and karate is so popular in western as cricket and football
Criminal that Kanazawa isn’t on this list.
Without mention of Sensei Teruyuki Okazaki, it is not the top 5 list (if the list is all time).
Terrific vision and skillsets. As for the microscopic fly-specks of print down the bottom, which Einstein was behind that idea? 🤨
Seriously, no Terry O'Neill or Frank Brennan???
