- It's Sunday 14th May 2017, and Geoff & Vicki hop over the sea from Portsmouth to the Isle of Wight where the sun is shining, the natives are friendly and the trains look rather familiar…
You can see our progress map along with loads of other information about the journey on our website here: www.allthestations.co.uk/
There's more bonus footage from Martin (our drone man!) of the IoW railway, on his own channel here: • Island Line
ROUTE: Ryde Pier Head - Shanklin - (IoW Steam Railway at Smallbrook Junction) - Ryde Esplanade
lovely to see Vicki's genuine enthusiasm
Vicki is a big kid. That little leap asking Geoff if they could go on the steam train was cute.
Vicki always has genuine enthusiasm. It's why we all like her so much!!!!
It's strange to think that the steam engine you travelled behind is younger than the tube stock on the island!!
"Get off my train"-- love it ! such a scream you 2 are having.
Vicki's so cute when she is excited about trains. What a beautiful smile too.
I love the button that says "press when illuminated". Has the Dalai Llama ever been to the Isle of Wight to find out what it does?
XD
That was the best 6:43 of my day. And I had a pretty good day, so that's really saying something. And Vicki, your enthusiasm is a delight to behold.
Thanks for this! Fun fact, the reason the Island line uses old Tube trains is because the tunnel at Ryde is so low mainline trains can't fit under it, only Tube trains are small enough to fit.
More than that, it was built to take full size trains but it was too steep and kept flooding so they raised the floor and ran the tube stock instead
Sam smith yeah I found that out this week at train story at Heaven street.
So why REALLY old 1938 tube stock? Why not 1967 tube stock since that's available (unless that's gone to scrap) or when the New Tube for London launches, the 1972 and 1973 tube stock!
The 67s went to scrap a few years ago now, apart from a couple of cars in museums.
Why not use them? I don't know for sure, write to SWT and ask them, but I'd hazard a guess it boils down to cost vs benefit. They'd have to buy the '67s from LU at the scrap value, pay for all the required mods/repairs and ship them to the IoW. And for what benefit? Trade one life expired set of trains for another, it probably isn't going to make much odds on the high maintenance cost, and the 67s are less of a curiosity for tourists.
67 stock would be more complex to modify, as it had ATO.
Fantastic - Best video yet, your enthusiasm comes across brilliantly. If I was a tube train this is where I would like to retire
Love the drone shots. Such a good line to explore.
Yeah, beautiful those shots. The shot with the train going in one direction and the jet ski in the water going in the other direction was worthy of a Bond film. Add some John Barry music and they've nailed it.
Its almost like video game footage. Spot on.
Brilliant, incredible drone footage, love Vicki's enthusiasm!
Thank you so very much for taking the time to put this together and upload it, especially, as one of your team was telling me, at the end of a very tiring day. I love the Isle of Wight's railways, both 'mainline' and steam varieties, and it's much appreciated that you've taken the time to share your experiences there. The 1938 stock is definitely evocative of days gone by on the Underground!
Really enjoyed that and loved Vicky's excitement at the steam railway. Quite right to.
Ah, the Isle of Wight - my birthplace and where I lived until the age of 19. Feeling slightly homesick now. Glad that the weather held out for you!
Gary Lumley why did you move ?
Thanks Geoff, Vicki, and the the All The Stations team, for another great video! Loving the exploits of Geoff and Vicki on their travels...if these You Tube uploads are anything to go by, then we really are in for a treat when the final documentary comes out! To the trains...!
I reckon Vicki noted the "quaint" poster at the end?
I wondered about that as well... either that or just happy chance :)
It's like she was in charge of their publicity department
Took my Mum and Dad to ride that line on the old tube train about 7 years ago - my Dad had a great chat with the Guard about travelling on these trains to school back in the late 1930s early 1940s. Dad lived in Kingsbury back then.
'Get off my train' - lol. Vicki was positively giddy with excitement! I feel I must return to IOW, it's been over 30 years!
The drone footage was a nice addition. Nice little video - cheers.
David & Vicky in Palo Alto, California are enjoying the episodes! Sorry we missed the kickstarter. Can't wait to see the Cambrian Coast! Thanks so much.
Amazing cinematography - thanks for yet another amazing video guys!
Loving the drone shots!
Great video! I'm glad you two are having as much fun as your subscribers! Thanks.
I also loved the drone footage, it's great seeing from the different angle and I'd love to see more of it!!
gitgit1995 it will happen! Future locations are planned!
Binge watching these on catch up and am not disappointed. AMAZING work by Martin!
Thanks for the great video. Lived in West Sussex for a long time but never got over there. Now it's on my bucket list. You really had perfect weather, and the drone shots are epic. Keep up the tremendous work. I've told a lot of people about the project here in the states, and they are enjoying the journey.
Absolutely brilliant! LOVE the drone footage, spectacular 😃 and great shots, and cool places and even a sign behind Vicki that says it's "quaint"... Fab stuff guys. I soooo want to visit the Isle of Wight.
Stunning drone footage
Brilliant, Geoff & Vicki. Simply brilliant!
I have only recently started watching your video content and I have to offer you my sincerest congratulations, both of you, for your highly entertaining and informative content....Thank You.
Tube trains on the Isle of Wight is a bit like when they used to rescue pit ponies and retire them to a farm.
The problem is that the tunnel is quite small and 'mainline' gauge stock will not fit. They don't seem to have the cash for a new build and all the more modern LU Tube Trains that have been scrapped ( 83TS, 67TS, 72TS etc) all have aluminium bodies. Aluminium and sea water on the pier do not go well together - you might be able to watch the body disove before your eyes !
Good thing the D-Trains, class 484 are coming to the Isle Of Wright.
glad to see you enjoyed the steam railway, I can volunteer there next year. hope you come back again!
Today is the 12th of February 2023, and I'm watching the 9th episode of All The Stations ❤
I remember going on many family hoildays to IoW and being taken to Brading. We also walked allong some of the disused lines shown. Great video by the way.
When we come out from coronavirus please reissue this sereis as a real interest for Britain.
Geoff, as a south Londoner, I luv all your videos, proper makes me smile, keep the up, even the sightseeing ones are so much fun. Do more pls
I do love the Isle of Wight's railway network. I've been to the island twice and each time getting the train to Shanklin was a joy.
The whole experience is just brilliant, although equally it's bonkers that they're running trains nearly 80 years old as part of the National Rail network.
Drone shots look awesome!
Martin Great Drone Bridging footage, liked the build of excitement positive momentum; Editor kudos super work -timing spot on (!!) able to craft a terrific package.
Did you know that when the passing loop at Brading was taken out, leaving the disused platform on the far side and the single-line track, the lifted track was re-used on the Steam Railway's extension from Havenstreet to Smallbrook Junction? It enabled the two railways to come together, but this accounts for the lop-sided timetable on the Ryde-Shanklin service 20mins, then 40mins each hour.
That drone footage is superb!
great video with excellent drone footage
Love the drone footage!
Yes, wondered about the UAV footage. Very nice. Rob
Amazing Drone shots!!
Been there (many times) Done that and loved it. Also love your videos.
I went to the Isle of with that week and I went on the train to Ride Pier Head the day after D: Loved to have seen you guys. You still make great videos!
Yes, but when is the Isle of Wight video going to be uploaded?!
I hope you are still disgusted Geoff.
While off sight.
(nearly missed a shaker)
when you come to Southend make sure to visit the world's longest pleasure pier and ride the pier railway
Stunning work. Must go there one day, it looks gorgeous.
It's gorgeous
Line at Shanklin used to carry on to Wroxall and Ventnor via a very long tunnel through the chalk cliff. Grandad remember to whilst travelling to my Aunt. Ventnor station was that tight that the only way to cross platforms was to go through the carriages.
So excited you did the Isle of Wight! I wasn't expecting you would do it.
Isle of Wight is very much part of the national rail network.
Excellent video!
These videos are really quite brilliant. I do wish, though, every time you appeared at another rail station there could be a a progression map showing your location. Sadly, I am not from the UK and have not had the opportunity to learn the rail network.
Best one yet!
I can remember going to Isle of Wight and travelling on steam train from Ryde pier head to Shanklin.
Sooo good! So so so good!
Glad the weather was kind to you Geoff & Vicki.
The rolling stock on the Island Line is 1938 Stock.
Always love visiting the Isle of Wight.
Took my family over to Ryde so that we could ride the old tube trains. A great day out.
Yep drone footage in these videos is fantastic
I used to go to the Isle of Wight for holidays. Travelling from Ryde pier head to Shanklin.
Part of the old railway is now a cycle/walking route called the Red Squirrel Way. It's a good mostly tarmaced surfaced and an interesting ride.
drone footage of the tube train with the hovercraft in the background is great!
Hey! I been to the Isle of Wight on 20-22nd of September for PGL Little Canada
The drone footage is incredible. Will there be any more of it on the mainland? I can only imagine how good it would look up in the highlands.
RandomNameHere Yes, I will be turning up at other pre-organised locations on their adventure to provide some footage
Outstanding.
RandomNameHere Now Geoff has uploaded his video, I'll upload a video with all the clips I took on the island, as Geoff obviously didn't use them all
You just got a new subscriber. :)
RandomNameHere cheers! As and when time permits, I'll be doing more railway/drone videos
Beaching wasn't fully responsible. He closed them but didn't lift the track and sell it. He gave it to the council for the future. They then quickly sold it and such like
Re:the moquette which as already pointed out was surplus material from the Metropolitan Line "A" Stock refurbishment (although not the design in the "A" Stock when withdrawn, it was changed again). The previous batch of trains on the island (the 485 or Standard Stovk used from electrification until 1989) was given surplus LUL moquette used on original District Line "D" Stock, the yellow, orange and black design, also used on the M, T and L Class buses in London. A red-tinged version of this is now currently in used on the Emirates Airline cable cars.
Have been on this several time from ryde pier to haven street station the isle of white railway was quite extensive in its day I can remember using it when l was very young me and the wife have walked along ryde pier it quite a long walk but nice
Only one Like to give. Sigh.
Love the drone footage!
The Isle of Wright has some neat railways!
4:20 As a matter of fact, IoWSR was also my first steam train ride. Which means the 38TS was actually the first Tube stock I got on. And I actually had its to-be successor (yeah, D stock, when they were still in London) as my first subsurface stock ride. It's been a very fulfilling trip for someone first set foot on the UK...
Continuity is so much better on these than anything TV would come up with. Portillo would be on the platform as the Ivatt comes in, and then the drone shot would be the train leaving behind a Terrier, and he'd probably arrive at Havenstreet behind an Austerity.
(I don't think I've seen this one before, thanks for the reminder by the way Geoff.)
ive just moved to the isle of wight a week ago and i went on the island line yesterday from ryde pier head to shanklin and it was amazing especially to be on an 1938 tube stock
jordan grattan nice :) in case you're wondering the "modern" interior roof panels / lighting and the "modern" door controls were fitted before they were sent over to the island in the late 80s - early 90s :) isn't it quite a sensation being on both an electric train and a train with wooden window frames and bouncy springy seats at the same time? lol!
Only ever been on a 1938 Stock train at Acton Depot. Did also spot a certain Geoff Marshall there too. :-)
The class 483's on the islands are in essence 1938 tube stock but with modifications like the removal of the shoe gear for the 630V four rail negative return from the centre rail from LU to the 750V third rail, as well as being two car units as opposed to four car units
0:35 - oooooooooo *cringes on the line mismatching above Weymouth*
Apart from that amazing though! I spent a week on the Island line just going back and forth last year! I love those trains!
I'm of to Isle Of Wight 1st Sept. Can't wait, going to travel all the stations from Shanklin to Ryde to attend the many car boot sales i believe they have on the island!!
I`m enjoying these videos guy`s you both are doing very well :) , the answer to the moquette on the Isle of Wright 1938 Stock train it is the old Metropolitan Line A60/62 Stock Diamond Moquette before the Triangle Blue and Purple Moquette, until it retired in 2012. I can`t wait to see York station on here, as York is one of my favourite places in the country and I hope you both have time to visit Bettys of Harrogate Tearooms in St Helens Square in York, I am looking forward to watching that. :) and Hope you have time to see the National Railway Museum and the world famous Mallard Stream train. :) best wishes Guy`s.
Nice drone footage!
Nice and drone footage caught the hovercraft departure - 🙂👍
I was born and bread on the island and I love it
Ooooh... I see it now.
So if this is the Isle of Wright, then where's the Isle of Wrong?
At Ryde pier head about to go on one of the last 1938 trains Before they replace them With the D stock 1977 trains
Vicki (near the end of the video at Haven Street) - "Its like stepping back in time..." . Yes, well, welcome to the Isle Of Wight !
I agree. The Isle of Wight is one of the best islands that is part of the UK 🇬🇧
now I want to go to the IOW and go on the train! :-)
How incredible that the 1938 stock can still run a regular commercial service!
Hope they do this next year with the new train
I remember Haven Street well from 1978 to 1982 when I lived in Ryde. Used to want to go and see the Tube Stock at Ryde St Johns which was our nearest station living in Node Close. Was stopped from doing so by my parents as the surrounding area was not as desirable as where we lived back then and they feared for my safety aged five. They took me to Haven Street when there were events on instead but I can't recall Smallbrook Junction: The line out of Haven Street appeared to finish somewhere outside of Newport IoW requiring the train to reverse back to where it had come from.
I lived in Pound Mead for 10 years (75 - 85)
the reason the train is so bumpy is because the track is slightly wider than the axle s when the train is going down the track it wobbles from side to side.
first went on the Isle of White in about 1952 some of the old lines were still in use all steam trains, shame they closed the line to Ventnor through the tunnel. i think that it was too expensive to repair the tunnel? last time on the island one of the stations still had the dropdown destination boards showing where the trains used to go
Was on this railway today
Vicki's excited about the steam train because it feels like the Hogwarts express! I LOVED this video... the drone shots were brilliant!
The Island Line 38's or Class 483's use surplus "Metropolitan Diamond" moquette intended for the A60/62 Stock trains of the Metropolitan and East London lines which were receiving their mid-life refurbishment in the 1990's.
Amir Yes, that replaced the blue "Network South East" moquette which was fitted prior to the trains entering service on the IoW. A nice touch painting them into LUL red as well. At one point, they were in a livery with large pictures of dinosaurs on the side!!
Stop teasing me Geoff, I WANT THE ISLE OF WHITE VIDEO!! 😂😂
The CSO is fantastic, I genuinely believed you were on the Isle of Wight for a few shots there 😂😂
That is a lovely closing shot.
Xtra Happy Got very, very lucky with the jetski being in the right place at the right time!
Martin Clitheroe Nice :)
Excellent work on the drone shots Martin - we felt very lucky to be editing with such lovely footage :-)
dananddanfilms I thought Geoff was editing this one?
I think that was originally the plan, but what with one thing and another it ended up being me. Which I was more than happy about!
5:00 I always love steam trains
Even 2 Years Later . The Greatest mystery remains if these two ever went to the Isle of Wight
I have memories of Brading station still being gas-lit in 1980. Could this possibly be the last gas-lit mainline station in UK?
ruclips.net/video/-VYN8b2OOAc/видео.html
I first took the train to Shanklin about 50 years ago. Looks like it might still be the same stock.
Sylvia Else it's not; the change from 1923 stock to 1938 stock didn't happen until the late 80s to early 90s.
I will have to go to the Isle of Wight by ferry from Portsmouth just to go on the old tube trains.
