  • Nikolaos Pyrsopoulos, MD, PhD, MBA, FACP, AGAF, FAASLD, FRCP (Edin), FACG currently serves a Professor of Medicine, Professor of Physiology, Pharmacology and Neuroscience, and as the Chief of Gastroenterology & Hepatology at New Jersey Medical School and the Medical Director of Liver Transplantation for University Hospital. In addition, he is an Adjunct Professor in the School of Medicine at New York Medical College. He completed his medical degrees (MD and PhD) at the University of Athens in Greece, followed by residency and fellowships at Sismanogleio General Hospital in Athens and the University of Miami School of Medicine. Dr. Pyrsopoulos is board certified in the areas of Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology and Transplant Hepatology. He received his M.B.A. from the University of Miami School of Business. He has published in various scientific journals, including the Journal of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Transplantation and is one of the authors in the book devoted to the unique field of abdominal transplantation: Intestinal and Multivisceral Transplantation. He is the editor of 7 books. In addition, he currently serves as the Editor in Chief of the World Journal of Hepatology and he participates on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Clinical and Translational Hepatology, a reviewer for the journals of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Liver Transplantation, Cellular and Molecular Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and other well-known journals in the field of Hepatology and Gastroenterology. He Is the program director of the Gastroenterology fellowship, and the Transplant Hepatology fellowship at Rutgers NJMS. Dr. Pyrsopoulos is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, The American College of Gastroenterology, the American Gastroenterological Association, the Royal College of Physicians at Edinburgh and the American Association of the Study of Liver Diseases. He is also a member of various medical associations such as the European Association of the Study of the Liver, the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and the American Society of Transplantation, among others. He has served in numerous national and institutional committees and currently he is the Chair of the Finance committee for AASLD and one of the councilors for the Liver and Biliary section of AGA. A renowned speaker, Dr. Pyrsopoulos has given national and international talks and lectures on a variety of topics within Hepatology and Gastroenterology. He has served as Activity Director for 19 annual national conferences such as the Update on Liver Disease and Digestive Disease: New Advances. Furthermore, Dr. Pyrsopoulos has participated in over 70 international and national phase 2 and 3 research projects. He served as the President for the Rutgers Faculty Organization at NJMS and RBHS. His vision is excellence in patient care, providing outstanding education to the fellows, residents and students and promoting the science of medicine by conducting research.
