What strikes me in the first 5 minutes is that China defined "out of poverty" not just by income, but also access to food, clothing, safe shelter, medical service, and education. In comparison, income seems a relatively minor expense to the rest. It's so much more than just handing out money to the poor.

    • @ellengran6814
      @ellengran6814 3 года назад +73

Its not about handing out money, its about giving people their basic needs (security/home/clothes) and educate them in how to grow their own economy.

My father was a mechanic on the Mitchell B-25 light bomber during WWII and was stationed in Kunming, China, so I grew up with his stories and photographs of China. He had the highest respect for the Chinese people! Their airfield would be bombed and until the huge bomb craters would be repaired the planes could not takeoff or land. He said the teamwork of the Chinese people was incredible in making the repairs quickly. He also said that the people had very little but would share what they had with them, eggs being like gold. China knows the value of teamwork, as can be seen today on the pandemic. I took several classes on China in college too. It was wonderful to see the launch of China's space station. Terrific interview!

Look up *Liangping Airport* in Wiki and see the incredible stats about the *"seven years of air battles over Sichuan, from 1938 to 1945... where the Imperial Japanese raiders attacked Liangshan airbase alone with 7,855 bombs, resulting in the deaths of more than 2,000 military and civilian personnel; thousands of migrant workers worked feverishly to keep the airbase and facilities repaired, of these, 522 migrant workers died during combat operations, while over 3,000 migrant workers died in total from all causes, including cholera in those war years... "* ... very disturbingly the Wikipedia Information Police (WIP) are working on deleting this aspect of history as the citations are now largely mainland-China based while the "green" factions and NED-NGOs and constituency are trying to erase this aspect of history....when the Russians helped China deflect the murderous assault from the Empire of Japan ... it was quite the proxy war btwn China-USSR VS Japan-USA... We Americanos must face this ugly but TRUE fact in history... had the USA genuinely helped China beat back the Imperial Japanese at the *Battle of Chongqing* then Pearl Harbor would've NEVER had happened... even the nuke-WMD attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki wouldn't needed to have happened!!! 🤯

As a young man i first travelled into China in 1979 I saw extreme poverty firsthand. Food was rationed and social mobility was almost nonexistent. I witness the transformation of China as a businessman based in Hong Kong regularly travelling into Shenzhen which was a tiny backwater fishing community of around 100,000 poor people across the border in China .
There is no better example of the incredible achievement of the Chinese people and their leadership than Shenzhen. It’s now a ultra modern metropolis of 13m people and one of the wealthiest city in the world .
To witness it in real time as I did still feels unreal to me not only have they lifted 800million people out of poverty but has elevated 300m people into middle class the size of the population of the USA . They can now travel into every corner of China on high speed trains , purchase every product know to man mostly made by them ! They have basic universal healthcare for all their citizens , educational system that improves year on year , they care for their elderly better with great support systems that keeps them active and engaged in a fast changing society .
I have seen many incredible events in my 70yrs but the rise of China by far the single most significant event . The peaceful manner of their rise something that we should all learn from .

Thank you, Rania, for another great discussion on a very important topic! I've fall in love with you and your channel. Thank you, Tings, for sharing your knowledge, insights and stories. I think the audience deserves the facts. I'm a Chinese who completed college in China and got my PhD in the US. Now I'm a scientist and I live in the US full time (for the last 21 years). I still have a lot of family and friends in China. Speaking of poverty and the changes in China for the last few decades, I happen to have the first hand experience. I grew up in a rural village and I still remember how poor we were when I grew up. And I'm the youngest child in the family. When school starts, sometimes my parents had to borrow 20, 50 cents from neighbors in order to buy me pencils and notepads. We didn't have a telephone at home even when I was in college. Now, my 85 years old mom uses a 5g smartphone to play with tiktok and video chat with me. She lives in a big house with pretty much everything, from refrigerator, A/C, to natural gas stove, solar heated shower... etc. Every time when I go back to visit, I feel that all my college buddies are wealthier than me - because they all work hard and China is full of opportunities. Nobody that I know of could deny that their living standards have improved multiple-folds in the last 20 years! Oh, did I mention that everybody in my village now have free healthcare from the government and you will get a monthly check from the government when you reach 55 years of age - kind of like suicidal security here in the States. The check gets bigger even you get older. Most of the families in my village have access to private cars too... I could go on and on and on, but you should have some ideas now. Lastly, I want to mention that China did all that in a very short period of time without stealing or robbing the wealth from any other countries. It's pure hard-work and determination!!! Go China!

Some economists have projected that both the U.S. and parts of Europe could slip into a recession for a portion of 2023. A global recession, defined as a contraction in annual global per capita income, is more rare because China and emerging markets often grow faster than more developed economies. Essentially the world economy is considered to be in recession if economic growth falls behind population growth.

China’s long term poverty program would be very difficult to be replicated in other countries bc most countries have government change every 4 to 5 years. Moreover, the ruling political party or parties normally do not have millions & millions of dedicated members who would give up their comfortable livelihood to work in the rural & poor region in the country for a long period of time. In addition, conflicts between different political, tribal, race & religious groups would be one of the biggest hinderance to administer this long term social program.

"It is difficult for me to imagine what “personal liberty” is enjoyed by an unemployed hungry person. True freedom can only be where there is no exploitation and oppression of one person by another; where there is not unemployment, and where a person is not living in fear of losing his job, his home and his bread. Only in such a society personal and any other freedom can exist for real and not on paper."

MinNing Town is one of the poverty alleviation projects conducted between the very impoverished Ningxia region and the rich coastal Fujian province. (It's one of the East-West development cooperation projects Tings was talking about in the video.) The series talked about their failures, their struggles, and their final success getting out of poverty after years of hardwork. It's very informative. Highly recommend!

For further watches, CGTN has countless hundreds of reports and documentaries which is partially compiled in their playlist "Zero Poverty by 2020", one of them is a joint-produced documentary with PBS "China's War on Poverty". Unfortunately, a lot of bitter people just don't want everyone to see all these gargantuan achievements coming from China😔
Numerous videos have been reported and taken down or copy-striked, for example my favorite "Up and Out of Poverty", a whole 7-episodes (hour-long) documentary series that brings a larger picture how the Communist Party under Xi's command is implementing the poverty eradication policy by the start of 2012, which I haven't finished it yet. While China lifted 850 million people out of poverty, India has ensured that the status quo be maintained, and that the 850 million citizens in its middle-caste and lower-caste remain poor and destitute.

Actually a lot of people misunderstand China.
    China failed in communism.
China has a capitalist economy with a socialist government.
Capitalism drived all Chinese people to work hard ……and they succeeded .
    Kudos to them.
Xi Jin Ping is actually selected by the communist party which has 90 mil members.
His election is coming up in 2022.
It is not true that Xi is a lifetime dictator …..
I am a Malaysian Chinese and most of us support China….
We wish China the best of luck ……🌈🌈🌈

About 35 years ago my father earn only 30 yuan a month. It was about US$ 4 per month and that was pretty much the average salary for a Chinese worker at the time. He is retired now. he got over US$1000 per month for his pension. My hometown is only a 3rd -4th tier city in China.
